Is Activision Blizzard in a rough patch or a longer decline? | This Week in Business

1 year 8 months ago

It's financial earnings season, and as expected, a lot of the news coming out of the industry isn't particularly good.

Last week saw Microsoft and Sony post sales declines from their gaming businesses, even as the platform-holders' other businesses carried both to growth, while Capcom revenues were almost halved on a tough comparison to last year's first fiscal quarter when it launched Resident Evil Village.

This week saw a few more companies offer a mix of results, including Nintendo joining its platform holder peers with fairly "meh" results.

Sega posts gains on light release slate

1 year 9 months ago

Sega has released its financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2022, and the publisher's fiscal year appears to be off to a good start.

Sega's first quarter release slate was somewhat muted, led by the retro compilation Sonic Origins, a PC revamp of the 2020 Switch release Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega Mix, and a Switch port of PS4 title 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, which debuted in Japan in 2019.

The publisher did not specify how any of those titles performed individually, but the company as a whole reported selling 5.14 million copies of games over the quarter, down 22% year-over-year.

Mario Kart 8's Coconut Mall Track Got a Wild Update, And the Internet Is Taking Notice

1 year 8 months ago

This week, Nintendo released the second wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass DLC, which included Sky High Sundae — an entirely new addition to the Mario Kart franchise.

Nintendo's announcement was followed up with a video that that took the Internet by surprise. It revealed that Coconut Mall, a course first introduced on the Wii, would be receiving a slight update. In the new version, the Shy Guy drivers waiting near the finish line — the last obstacle drivers face upon reaching the finish line — will do chaotic donut spins in their attempts to slow down players.

Something like this best seen, so here’s the video linked that shows you the update, and how the Shy Guys try to donut spin you way off the course.

The video, showing Princess Peach getting slammed by a Shy Guy after being blasted by a red shell, went viral, as of now generating over 33 thousand likes and more than 700,000 views.

The internet obviously couldn’t resist the meme potential this latest gem possessed.

The King of Fighters XV Getting Cross Platform & New DLC Season; Samurai Shodown Getting Rollback Netcode

1 year 8 months ago

Today SNK’s own Yasuyuki Oda was on stage at EVO 2022 to provide news about The King of Fighters XV and Samurai Shodown.

Starting with The King of Fighters XV, the game is getting cross-platform gameplay. There is still some work to do in order to implement it, but SNK plans to have it ready sometime next year.

On top of that, a new DLC season (Team Pass 3) has been confirmed to come down the line. We’re still waiting to know what the second team of Team Pass 2 will be, and today we learned that it’s going to be revealed on Sunday (August 7).

The upcoming Team Awakened Orochi DLC will include a BGM dedicated to the team itself, two special BGMS for specific matchups (Shermie vs Awakened Shermie and Chris vs Awakened Chris), and two additions for the DJ Station, King of Fighters R-1 and King of Fighters R-2.

The DLC also received an official release date on August 8.

Oda-san also had news in store for Samurai Shodown. The game is receiving rollback netcode with a release date targeting spring 2023.

SNK is teaming up with Code Mystics for this update, which will be free. It’s based on the existing solution for The King of Fighters XV using GGPO.

It’s not coming for all platforms. We’re getting it on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. As usual, the Switch is left out.

The King of Fighter XV is currently available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Samurai Shodown is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch, and PC.

Soul Hackers 2 Unleashes a Sabbath In New Trailer

1 year 8 months ago

Today Atlus has released another of its daily trailers of Soul Hackers 2, focusing on the demons that you can befriend in the game.

Specifically, we get to see a Sabbath, a special post-turn attack activated when the conditions are fulfilled that lets you unleash your whole team of demons on the enemy.

We get to see Norn, Doppelganger, Byakko, Hell Biker, Nekomata, Strawberry Frost, Mithras, Orthus, Pyro Jack, Principality, Inanna, and more.

Like all daily trailers, we get a horoscope, but those with Sabbaths have a “almost everyone is lucky” setup. So today’s gonna be (according to Atlus) a lucky day if you’re Cancer, Gemini, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Pisces, Virgo, Capricorn, Scorpio, Leo, Aries, or Libra.

You can watch the trailer below.

Soul Hackers 2 launches for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC ( both on Steam and on the Windows Store) on August 26, just one day after the Japanese release on August 25.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Harrier & Bendigo Airport Get New Screenshots; Belfast Shines in New Trailer

1 year 8 months ago

Third-party developers shared new assets of upcoming aircraft and airport add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

We start with DC Designs, which provided a development update about the AV-8B Harrier II, which should be released in September.

“Hi folks, more cockpit images of the Harrier in this week’s update as work progresses on the detailing and PBR texturing. It takes quite a while to go through this phase of building an aircraft, and with the Harrier’s office being a busy little place it will be at least two more weeks of work before it’s all finished.
Decals for all markings are about 50% complete, and most of the switches are now animated, with their respective functions being coded alongside the modelling work. CodenameJack is doing sterling work once again with displays and functions, broadly similar to those found in the SC Designs F-16 Fighting Falcons but tweaked to be more relevant to the Harrier.

Asobo’s pilot has been refined to move more naturally with the controls – it turns out the contact points for the controls are via the pilot’s wrist and ankles, rather than the hands and boots. Unless users have a preference for my own pilots, I’d like to start using the Asobo pilot in future products as it’s pretty good and already matches up well with everything.

There will be no update next week as I’m away for five days on a family holiday, so this will be the last you will see of the Harrier progress until August 19th. By then, I would like to have finished most of the cockpit and be underway with liveries and the AV-8B+ / GR9 variant. Sim Acoustics have said they can do the sound package in September, which ties in well with the planned release date, so it seems everything is coming together fairly well.”

Gotham Knights Cinematic Shows Bittersweet Dick Grayson & Barbara Gordon Scene

1 year 8 months ago

A new “exclusive” cinematic for Gotham Knights gives a sweet moment between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon. While nothing is directly mentioned in the video description, it is likely this will be an in-game cutscene. It doesn’t necessarily spoil anything, but there are hints on where the story could go.

So, anyone who doesn’t want to know more ahead of the game’s release is now warned. Just to be safe, we will post the video below before talking more about it as a spoiler warning buffer.

This tender moment is obviously sometime after the death of Bruce Wayne that will kick off the events of Gotham Knight. While in the comics Dick Grayson was quick to don the Cowl after the apparent death of Bruce Wayne at the hands of Darkseid in Final Crisis, it appears this universe is a bit more tricky.

This video also confirms that Dick and Barbara were once an item but don’t seem to be anymore for reasons we might learn later on. They are an iconic couple in the comics, so it makes sense that they were together at some point.

It is likely we will see other cinematics pop up showing off Tim Drake and Jason Todd in the next couple months before release.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Accolades Trailer Celebrates the RPG’s Massively Positive Reviews

1 year 8 months ago

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has been out for a week now, so Nintendo went ahead and dropped a brand-new trailer on YouTube for the extensive Monolith Soft RPG that focuses on the many high review scores the game received last week.

The game is currently sitting at a score of 89 on Metacritic, making it one of the most highest-reviewed titles on the Switch and tied with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition.

For those unfamiliar with this new game, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is all about a group of unlikely friends who are on opposing sides of an endless war. Noah, Mio, Eunie, Taion, Lanz, and Sena band together to help free colonies across the world of Aionios from the

The trailer itself features quotes from multiple websites as well as yours truly. In our review of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Twinfinite gave the game a 4.5/5. Down below is a short excerpt from the review.

“All things considered, it’s incredible to think about how far Xenoblade has come in the last decade. With the help of a devoted fanbase, it went from being a niche game on the Wii that was only sold at GameStop in North America to being a core Nintendo franchise. The good news is that it looks like the hard work at Monolith Soft has paid off yet again.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is an absolute must-buy for Switch owners who are looking to pick up their next game. No matter if you’re a longtime fan of the franchise or a first-timer, this game is one of the best RPGs on the Switch that can easily last hundreds of hours for players who never want to leave the world of Aionios.”

My Hero Academia Anime Season 6 Raises the Stakes in New Trailer

1 year 8 months ago

My Hero Academia Season 6 is still a few months away from release, but the latest trailer shows there’s plenty to look forward to in the upcoming season.

Revealed during Crunchyroll Expo 2022, the trailer provides snippets of dialogue and action from the new season. Most all of it takes place during the operation that was being prepped during season 5, and most every major or minor character looks to be involved.

The trailer starts with the heroes gathering for the operation. Many speak of the importance of succeeding and thinking about what is at stake, while others gear themselves up for the fierce battle ahead. Deku and his classmates are among both these groups, and sound both determined and desperate to come out of the mission unscathed.

The villains, meanwhile, are just as determined. Some speak of the hypocrisy of the hero-focused society, while others only care about causing as much destruction as possible. Both members of the original League of Villains and the new paranormal Liberation Front make appearances, and look less than threatened by their adversaries.

This is all paired with bits and pieces of animation. While it starts off with more serene shots, the footage slowly becomes more action-packed until glimpses of brutal fights start to become apparent.

It all leads into some dire dialogue about how they can’t let a certain person get out, with animation of Shigaraki grinning menacingly at the camera.

Though brief, there’s plenty to unpack and dig into for fans. The full trailer can be viewed down below.

Bioware Posts SWTOR Short Story “All That’s Left” About Sa’har Kateen

1 year 8 months ago

Yesterday, Bioware posted an interesting short story that provides some interesting lore about Sa’har Kateen, a force-sensitive Twi’lek padawan that has been a big focus of the Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) story ever since the most recent 7.1 patch update.

The short story focuses on Kateen’s journey stowing away on a transport, as she hopes to find her missing brother while also battling some heavy and emotional internal conflict. You can check out a brief excerpt from the story right down below.

“When you are ready, break free.” Darkness closes in…

She opened her eyes, but the darkness was still there. The heat and the noise told her she was still on the floor of her space on the transport. The holocron was lit by a soft glow again, dim, but steady. The overwhelming, suffocating defeat she’d felt since she escaped Elom was gone… instead, she could feel a pull in the Force, a bond connecting her to her brother, a compass guiding Sa’har to Ri’kan.

Sa’har stood, grabbed the tattered cloak she’d been hiding the holocron in, and draped the cloth over the relic. She bundled it up and stashed it with her few other belongings so she could snatch them up and run as soon as the transport reached its destination, in a few days’ time.

When they arrived, she’d have to sneak aboard a new ship, but this time, she knew where she was heading. This time, she knew what she needed to do, and who she needed to be: a warrior, a liberator, a friend… a sister.

Can we really only be wowed by something once?

1 year 8 months ago

There's something I keep thinking about lately. It's this idea that we only have so much space in our minds for formative gaming experiences and it's diminishing returns forever after.

I was talking to a guy in a pub about it, who overheard a conversation I was having with someone else and leaped in, delighted to talk to someone, anyone, about games. It was quite endearing. And it was while talking about older games and remakes he said: I don't think anything will ever be as good as the original Deus Ex.

On the one hand, that's fair enough - the old Deus Ex was good, and it was a proper moment for games when people realised RPGs and FPSs could work together. It's not that which bothered me.

We'll also get our collective hands on the brand-new 1500hp Folding Shield and "once again have the opportunity to drop onto the Haven map". The update also brings "familiar foes" from the recently-announced Assassin's Creed season.

Along the way they'll face hostile NPCs and environments in search of secrets and treasure. Then, they'll need to find their way to a departure point to get away safely with their loot. Bungo Stray Dogs Anime Returns With Dire Season 4 Trailer

1 year 8 months ago

The Bungo Stray Dogs anime is officially coming back for a fourth season, and the new cour’s trailer shows that all is not well for the Armed Detective Agency.

Revealed as part of Crunchyroll Expo 2022, the trailer doesn’t waste time establishing that the series’ protagonists are in danger. Voice bits from several characters paint a scene of the Agency being set up for a crime via a job they accepted, resulting in their arrest at the hands of another organization.

This group is the Hunting Dogs, a collection of Gifted military police members who will capture anyone that doesn’t adhere to human ethics. They’re ready and willing to chase down every member of the Armed Detective Agency to the ends of the Earth, and make a less than subtle declaration of war against the members who they aren’t able to arrest right-off.

All of this is paired with plenty of visuals and animation which hint at what’s to come. Some key highlights include what appears to be Dazai’s arrest at the hands of the Hunting Dogs, Atsushi and Kyouka trying to evade their pursuers and some clear glimpses of the Hunting Dogs’ heavy hitters. Everything looks to be animated in the same style as the past seasons too, maintaining its distinctive style while also offering plenty of movement and action.

It’s a lot to process, but also a great glimpse at what’s to come. The full trailer can be viewed down below, both via the official Crunchyroll Twitter and the official trailer released by Kadokawa.

The Walking Dead Humble Bundle Sells the Series Twice

1 year 8 months ago

The Walking Dead Humble Bundle

Telltale Games' adaptation of the The Walking Dead is ten years old in 2022. In fact, the series is available despite the sudden end of Telltale itself in 2018. Skybound Games, the series' new owner, has gathered the whole series and more in a new The Walking Dead Humble Bundle on PC. Money spent on purchases can be split between the charities SpecialEffect and Covenant House. SpecialEffect helps people with disabilities enjoy video games (such as by providing specialized controllers). Covenant House helps homeless and trafficked young people.

Like other Humble-managed media bundles, The Walking Dead Humble Bundle comes in multiple price points, determining how much a buyer gets out of the bundle. The pricing remains at "pay what you want" to start, with the bottom tier unlocking the first two seasons of Telltale's The Walking Dead and the 400 Days DLC chapter. The first season focuses on Lee Everett, a resident of Georgia, who encounters a young girl, Clementine, as the zombie outbreak takes over. The second season focuses on Clementine as she tries to survive alone.

You won’t have to wait all that long to be able to watch this new season for yourself, either. Episodes will start airing (subbed only at first, presumably) in January 2023.

You can see the very heavily “Senpai!” filled trailer for yourself below. There’s quite a bit of hitting. There might be more hitting than you can find in a trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie.

New Marvel’s Midnight Suns Goes Binary With Captain Marvel’s Extensive Gameplay Deep Dive Trailer

1 year 8 months ago

2K Games and Firaxis Games revealed another trailer of the turn-based tactical game Marvel’s Midnight Suns, dedicated to one of its playable superheroes.

This time around we can enjoy a deep dive into the gameplay behind Carol Danvers, A.K.A. Captain Marvel.

Unlike the previous video and her brief introduction, this time around we get to take a good look at how Captain Marvel fights and her “Binary” mechanics, which you have to get into as soon as you can and then try to maintain by holding onto some of your block stat.

You can also counter enemy attacks for whole turns, which isn’t an ability to sneeze at.

As usual, with this kind of trailer, we also see what happens if your custom hero tries to befriend Carol.

You can check out the trailer below.

Nugget Explains Strangereal, Starting with Ace Combat 4

1 year 8 months ago

Strangereal

Most of Bandai Namco's Ace Combat series is set in its own entirely fictional setting called Strangereal. A place of multiple continents, a variety of nations and cultures, and many, many wars, its timeline isn't too easy to grasp from the outside. But don't worry, Nugget is here to help. In a new video series, the new puppet mascot for Ace Combat explains Strangereal - and thus Ace Combat - history.

First introduced on video in April 2022, Nugget is a little chick, named after the slang term for rookie fighter pilots. Now Nugget is the official YouTuber for the Ace Combat official channel. Now Nugget's first presentation focuses on making Ace Combat history and Strangereal a little more "real" to fans new and old.

The first subject of Nugget's "Strangereal World Setting Commentary" focuses on 2001's Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies. English subtitles are available via closed captions.

Activision Blizzard's mobile games make more money than console and PC sales combined

1 year 8 months ago

More than half of Activision Blizzard's revenue came from mobile games in April - June (Q2) 2022.

According to Activision Blizzard's most recent financial report, the developer/publisher generated £535m from its PC and console sales in Q2 2022 - £275m ($332m) on PC and £310m ($376m) consoles - while £688m ($831m) came from its "mobile and ancillary" business, which the company says "primarily include[s] revenues from mobile devices". That's more than 50 per cent of its entire net revenue for the period.

Part of this, of course, is because Activision acquired mobile developer King in 2016 - and right now, it's the most successful part of ABK's business - but it's likely not coincidental that Diablo Immortal released during this period, too (thanks, PC Gamer).
