The 10 best songs in PC games

2 years 5 months ago

Not just the best songs. These are the best songs performed by characters in-game. In other words, if it's not sung by a fictional band, hollered by a karaoke-obsessed protagonist, or purred by a honey-tongued vocalist who also shoots at you with a ridiculous firearm, then it doesn't count. For this reason, in-game radios are also out. It's too easy, video games. Sorry. That means no rock station classics from Grand Theft Auto and no 80s bangers from Metal Gear Solid V. Learn to accept it. The best music is diegetic, baby.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Gets March Release Date - Tokyo Game Show 2021

2 years 5 months ago

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin – the action-focused Final Fantasy 1 spin-off – will be released on March 18, 2022.

Announced during Tokyo Game Show 2021, the new release date was released as part of a new story trailer (below) that seemingly confirmed that the game's main character, Jack is related in some way to Final Fantasy 1's anatagonist, Garland.

The game will also get a second demo that will include multiplayer features. Available only on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the demo is arriving today. It will add a new stage not seen in the last demo, and includes updates made based on player feedback from the first. This demo will also include a survey, which Square Enix wants to make further changes based on.

Announced earlier this year, Final Fantasy Origin is being developed alongside Nioh studio Team Ninja for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC. The game is a spin-off from FF1, but isn't a direct sequel.

“The game was inspired by FF1," producer Tetsuya Nomura explained previously. "The setting is based on FF1 as well. Where did the Warriors of Light come from and who are they? This is something you find out in the ending of FF1.

Sam Raimi Wasn't Sure He Could Face Making Doctor Strange 2 after 'Awful' Spider-Man 3 Experience

2 years 5 months ago

It's pretty clear that Spider-Man 3 was a scarring experience for all involved. It's considered a textbook case of executive meddling that brought Sam Raimi's trailblazing run with Spider-Man to a screeching halt.

Things are better now. The Spider-verse is alive and well at both Sony and Marvel, and Sam Raimi is currently directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Still, it's pretty clear that Raimi's Spider-Man 3 experience had a big impact on him.

In a interview with Collider, Raimi talked about how hard it was to return to directing superhero films after Spider-Man 3. It was bad enough, he said, that he wasn't sure he could face it again.

"I didn't know that I could face it again because it was so awful, having been the director of Spider-Man 3. The Internet was getting revved up and people disliked that movie and they sure let me know about it. So, it was difficult to take back on," Raimi said.

When his agent called him about the opportunity to direct Doctor Strange 2, Raimi found himself wondering if he could do it. "They're really demanding, those types of pictures. And I felt, 'Well, that's reason enough,'" he said.

Raimi went on to praise the character of Doctor Strange, saying he's "right up there with the favorites." He also had kind words for the first movie, saying director Scott Derrickson "did a wonderful job, an incredible job."

"I didn't think I would be doing another superhero movie. it just happened," Raimi said.

Destiny 2 will add full-auto as an accessibility option

2 years 5 months ago

To fire some of Destiny 2's guns at their fastest possible rate, you need to click six times per second. This sucks. This especially sucks if you have physical issues which impede rapid clicking. Honestly, with these semi-auto weapon archetypes I've often looked for rolls with the Full Auto Trigger System perk to spare my hands. So it's grand to hear from Bungie's new accessibility initiative that yep, they're planning to add some sort of accessibility option enabling automatic fire. In some way.

Square Enix Showcase at Tokyo Game Show 2021: The Biggest Announcements and Reveals

2 years 5 months ago

Veteran voice actor Hiroki Yasumoto kicked off Square Enix’s Tokyo Game Show presentation by reiterating that there would be no new news about Final Fantasy 16 – but went onto show off plenty of other trailers, and even a new RPG which is out in just two weeks.

To ensure sure you don't miss anything, we've included all the big news from the showcase (which you can watch below):

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Gets Release Date and Demo

A new demo is coming today for the Final Fantasy spin-off being developed by Team Ninja. The demo builds off feedback from the trial released earlier this year and will feature both a new stage and give players a chance to try out the game’s multiplayer elements.

There was an action-packed new trailer as well, announcing a release date of March 18, 2022. The trailer showed off more elements of the story, new characters and some flashy fight scenes. It ended with a scene of Chaos and a voiceover saying, “my name is Jack Garland" – given that the lead character is Jack, and the antagonist is FF1's Garland, there's clearly a connection between the two.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising Gets a First Gameplay Reveal - Tokyo Game Show 2021

2 years 5 months ago

The first extended gameplay footage of Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising – an action RPG spin-off of the upcoming Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes – has been revealed.

During a special video presentation from publisher 505 Games at Tokyo Game Show 2021, Yoshitaka Murayama and Junko Kawano introduced a trio of playable heroes: JB, Isha, and Garoo.

JB is an athletic young girl, Isha is a magic-wielder, and Garoo is, well, an anthropomorphic kangaroo (complete with a pouch on his shirt). In the story, these three meet in a village called "New Never" and they go underground exploring ancient ruins recently uncovered by an earthquake. The heroes seek both treasure and anyone who might be trapped underground.

Gameplay is 2.5D and fast-paced, and players can swap between the characters at will. The trailer shows one hero seamlessly fade out as another fades in, and their attacks chain together to deal large-scale damage to the monsters roaming the environments. For example, Isha can fire magic bolts at enemies out of her reach, then swap out for Garoo who leaps into the air with his giant sword to smash them into pieces.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin - The First Preview

2 years 5 months ago

If you’re able to look past all of the chaos memes – which I know might be a tall order – Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins is actually shaping up to be a very promising looking action/soulslike spin on the Final Fantasy franchise. I thought this back when I played the first demo back in June, and after playing through a second demo that is now publicly available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, I’m even more intrigued by its inventive combat that combines the typical Team Ninja style of fast and smooth, reflex driven action, with a JRPG job system and other quintessential Final Fantasy tropes.

For those that didn’t get a chance to check out the first limited time demo, Stranger of Paradise is a loot driven action/soulslike where you play as a man named Jack, who as everyone knows all too well at this point, is on a mission to kill chaos. While its combat may initially seem very similar to Team Ninja’s other action/soulslike, Nioh, there are actually a couple of key differences that cause the games to be played very differently. For one, there’s no stamina meter in Stranger of Paradise, so you can swing your weapon and button mash to your heart’s content without worrying about running out of stamina. Whether or not that’s a good idea, is another story entirely.

Gaudy and garish, Stranger of Paradise is everything I want from a Final Fantasy spin-off

2 years 5 months ago

At this point in the series' life, what exactly is a Final Fantasy game? Sometimes it's nice to be reminded, as we've been a couple of times in recently, it's whatever the hell it wants to be: a colourful karter with chocobos and moogles going wheel-to-wheel across lysergic race tracks, or a dour action game smeared in early noughties edginess.

I'm not here to talk about Chocobo GP today I'm afraid - though good lord am I looking forward to trying that out - and rather to provide a brief update on Stranger of Paradise, Team Ninja's muscular Final Fantasy spin-off that debuted to much bemusement at Square Enix's E3 show back in June.

Dream Cycle is a strange blend of Skyrim and Dishonored with big potential

2 years 5 months ago

Action adventure Dream Cycle certainly feels like an early access game. Animations are stiff, the audio mix is a bit funky, and it doesn't really have a save system yet. But look past the jank and I reckon there's a bright future ahead of Cathuria Games' latest. The studio was set up by Toby Gard, one of the folks who helped create Lara Croft, the tomb-raiding OG, so there's adventure pedigree at the helm, even if Dream Cycle bears no real resemblance to Tomb Raider. However, if you're into Skyrim and Dishonored, I'd definitely urge you to keep an eye on its progress.
