Dome Keeper review - not quite digging it

2 years 2 months ago

Dome Keeper divides me. There's a part of me, each time I play, that's really happy to return, to feel the ground give under my drill, to hoist my mined resources triumphantly to my command centre and turn them into upgrades to improve my base. This time, I tell myself, I will build better and survive longer and make my dome's defences impenetrable. This run will be the one.

Then, inevitably, it isn't. Just as I get some real momentum going, a particularly savage wave of shadowy monsters overwhelms me, from both the air and ground, and my precious dome cracks and breaks and I am done for. Game over, try again. And the other part of me is peeved it failed. But I know this is how it goes, that these games are about trial and error and experimentation, and feeling your way to winning combinations of upgrades, so I grit my teeth and excavate the ground beneath my dome again.

But each time I repeat the cycle, some of the sheen fades, because the core activity in the game, digging, doesn't really change. Every time I face it anew, it feels more like the laborious work it is, and I know it will be a while before I unlock the upgrades that make light of it. And just as I do, just as I build up that sense of momentum again, the inevitable overwhelming wave of enemies comes and I am dead again, and my willingness to start over wanes.

Super Robot Wars’ Huckebein Mk-II HG Plamodel Will Launch in 2023

2 years 2 months ago

Super Robot Wars OG Huckebein Mk-II HG Plamodel

Bandai announced at the 2022 All Japan Model & Hobby Show that it will release an HG plamodel of the Huckebein Mk-II from the Super Robot Wars: Original Generation series in March 2023. The set will include the mech's notable armaments, such as the Photon Rifle, Chakram Shooter, and G-Impact Cannon.

Huckebein Mk-II will be the fourth SRW OG mech to receive an HG plamodel adaptation. Masaki Andoh's Cybaster was the first unit to have a plamodel released in 2021. Kyosuke Nanbu's Alteisen and the Gespenst followed suit afterward.

Super Robot Wars OG HG Plamodels - Cybuster Gespenst Alteisen HuckebeinMkII

The return of Huckebein has been a huge topic in the SRW user base. There was an alleged copyright issue involving the Huckebeins due to their similarities in designs with Gundams. The issue started when anime adaptations of Original Generation began appearing in the late 2000s.

Dorfromantik's on Switch and I love it more than ever

2 years 2 months ago

In a weird way, I feel ever so slightly sorry for the team of students who made Dorfromantik. Call it Joseph Heller Syndrome: first time out and they've made a classic. Does that leave them confused? Fearful? I suspect not, and this is why I only feel ever so slightly sorry for the team. The bad news is they've made something that will be hard to top, but the good news is that they have made something that will be hard to top. They have brought happiness to hundreds of thousands of us around the world. That kind of feeling sticks around, I think.

I play Dorfromantik an awful lot. It's a hex-based tile game about making landscapes. You get a stack of tiles with little rivers, train tracks, forests, villages, grass or farmland on, and you plonk them down. Quests appear to connect certain amounts of a certain type of landscape, and these quests, once fulfilled, give you more tiles. Eventually, though, you run out. Game over. Defeat? Not really, because you've been making a landscape all this time, worrying about the details, and once you're out, the landscape is finished. You get to see the whole thing as if for the first time. You made that!

Dorfromantik has just landed on Switch, which explains why I'm doing what I'm doing at the moment. I'm trying to unlock the Midwinter biome. Biomes are unlockable prizes that give the landscape a certain colour scheme or vibe. Midwinter does what you'd expect it to: it makes it look like winter. But more than that it transports me to Christmas, and to the bookshelves where the Christmasest book of all time lives, John Masefield's The Box of Delights. Christmas in the countryside! Dorfromantik is the most Masefield game of all time when you're playing with Midwinter. You hover above the landscape, above the woods and fields and little copses. I feel a bit like Santa.

Who Is Garaki Kyudai in My Hero Academia? Explained

2 years 2 months ago

The latter portion of My Hero Academia sees some major shifts in its story structure and stakes compared to its earlier arcs, and for good reason. The idyllic days of making friends and growing stronger make way for times of turmoil, and the villains of the series’ world rear their heads in quick succession. One such villain is the doctor responsible for Shigaraki’s transformation into the final big bad, but if you’re like many fans, his appearance left you wondering: Who is Garaki Kyudai in My Hero Academia?

Fortunately, we’re here to explain everything you need to know about the character.

Who Is Garaki Kyudai in My Hero Academia? Answered

From what has been revealed in the series thus far, Garaki Kyudai is an established doctor and medical researcher in the world of My Hero Academia who deals in shadier businesses under the surface.

Incredibly skilled in medicine and a fervent examiner of the development of Quirks in the population, Ryudai is an authority on helping people understand how their powers work. He’s noted as being involved with and working at several hospitals throughout the country and penned a thesis on the possibility of Quirks eventually becoming so powerful and destructive that they could destroy the world if not controlled properly.

This is, in turn, is why he ended up allying himself with All for One. Convinced by the Big Bad of the world that he was the only one capable of controlling the ever-growing number of quirks, Kyudai decided to help All for One achieve a longer life span and gain the influence needed to absorb any quirk he wished. He began experimenting on human test subjects to better understand how Quirks can be blended into a single body and devised ways for All for One to be able to harness as many quirks as possible.

muv-luv alternative immortals header

Good news to the players who played the now-defunct Immortals: Muv-Luv Alternative – the game will re-launch in Spring 2023. The re-launched version of the game will be one that improves on the base of the original. [Thanks, KaroshiMyriad!]

According to the announcement on the Immortals: Muv-Luv Alternative website, the development team will work with NextNinja to publish the title. NextNinja has worked on mobile titles such as Grand Summoners, Touhou LostWord, and and Warau Arsnotoria. As the new game will essentially be an upgraded version of the original, it'll count as a new release.

New Players Would Need to Pay Around $12,000 to Purchase Every Original Overwatch 1 Cosmetic

2 years 2 months ago

Overwatch has been a staple in the gaming community since its launch in 2016. After winning Game of the Year months after release, Blizzard Entertainment stuck by the live-service multiplayer shooter for the long run with years of content updates. As with any multiplayer live-service title, content updates bring fresh cosmetics for the playable characters. Overwatch is no different as players had plenty of skins, victory poses, voice lines, and a bevy of unlockable content to purchase during each new content update.

Overwatch has been an active title for six years, and with Overwatch 2 on the horizon, players have had concerns on how the switch will impact the cosmetics they’ve earned over the years. Leading up to release, Blizzard has done addressed a ton of those concerns, reaffirming that cosmetics will carry over between both games, although the unlocking of heroes and other features are locked behind a First Time User Experience.

However, it seems like the first-time player experience maybe a rough one for newer users especially when it comes to the cosmetic side of the game. One clever Reddit user in the Overwatch community took the time to divulge how much it would cost to unlock every cosmetic in the game and to no surprise, or it may surprise some, the numbers are very high.

If a first-time user were interested in purchasing all of the cosmetics for Overwatch 1’s hero pool in Overwatch 2, it would roughly cost them around $12,000.

What Is the Quirk Singularity Doomsday Theory in My Hero Academia? Explained

2 years 2 months ago

If you’re nearing the latter portion of the My Hero Academia series, then a question has probably started to worm its way into your head with each passing episode and chapter: What is the Quirk Singularity Doomsday Theory in My Hero Academia, and why are so many characters bringing it up with increasing regularity? Fortunately for you, we were left wondering the same thing. After doing some research, these are the key facts we found that we think every fan should know about.

My Hero Academia Quirk Singularity Doomsday Theory Explained

At its core, the Quirk Singularity Doomsday Theory in My Hero Academia is a sort of looming threat that is being caused by the constant evolution of Quirks.

First hypothesized by the doctor Garaki Kyudai, this theory posits that each successive generation of Quirks will lead to new mutations that make Quirks more powerful and harder to control. This, in turn, will lead to a snowball effect, wherein Quirks will eventually become too powerful and complex for people to successfully manage, leading to widespread destruction and the potential end of the world.

As the series has gone on, this theory has proven valid and largely accurate. By the point in the series where Deku and his classmates are in their prime, Quirks are already seeing dangerous mutations that have the potential to cause widespread devastation if not properly controlled. Shigaraki’s Quirks is an especially potent example, with it being hard to control and capable of widespread destruction.

Can the Quirk Singularity Doomsday Be Stopped?

As for whether or not anything can be done to stop the Quirk Singularity Doomsday in My Hero Academia, it’s still yet to be seen.

Ed Sheeran Song Will Appear in Pokemon Scarlet, Violet

2 years 2 months ago

ed sheeran pokemon

Ed Sheeran’s “Celestial” will appear in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. You can watch the entire music video and listen to the full version of the song on services such as YouTube. The music video is interspersed with stylized cartoons of Pokemon. As he goes about his day, they appear to either help him or wreak havoc.

You can watch “Celestial” with Japanese subtitles from Ed Sheeran’s YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23g5HBOg3Ic

It is unknown in what context this song will play in Scarlet and Violet. It is also unclear if the full song will be available in game. As of the time of writing, “Celestial” is #7 on YouTube’s trending list for music. It has already accumulated over 2.1 million views on September 30, 2022, though the video came out on September 29.

Aside from stylized cartoony version of the Pokemon (courtesy of artist Yu Nagaba) appearing in the music video, there is also a sequence that references Pokemon: The First Movie. Ed, instead of Ash, leaps between Mew and Mewtwo’s fight while Pokemon from the first generation cheer him on. The starters from the Galar region also make cameo appearances as Ed’s Pokemon.

Gundam Evolution’s Team Shooter Soul is Weighed Down by Monetization’s Gravity

2 years 2 months ago

Gundam Evolution

It's still the early days of Bandai Namco's new team shooter Gundam Evolution - the game came out for PC about ten days ago as of this writing - but things are already looking up. The time it spent in testing wasn't wasted, either: Already quite refined, the play experience is smooth almost to the point of feeling frictionless. Bandai Namco has learned, and learned well from the example of Overwatch and its many copycats, and landed the essentials with aplomb.

For those uninitiated, Gundam Evolution is Bandai Namco's attempt to adapt one of the most iconic anime franchises of all time to the rigors of a free-to-play, team-based "hero shooter". Rather than secret agents, superheroes, or elite soldiers, Evolution plumbs the decades of Gundam history for inspiration. As of launch, 17 mobile suit mecha from a wide range of Gundam series form the playable roster. Twelve are playable from the beginning, with five more unlockable by various means (more on that later).

The Community Spotlight 2022.10.01

2 years 2 months ago

Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best community-created works from the previous week. With the site's staff girding their loins for the first in-person live studio event in over two and a half years, sentiment is at an all-time high. Speaking of which, if you still are confused, the Great Giant Bombathon: LIVE will be an all-day stream of in-person content starting at 12 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 5th. Nonetheless, we are getting ahead of ourselves! Without further ado, let's get into the site-related news and wonderful things the community has been up to recently.

News

It's time to review a new batch of news and information about the pull t-shirt designs. First, and foremost, Giant Bomb is not going to reprint the recent shirts until they find a new merch partner. The store has been shut down and is on "hiatus" until further notice. An email about shirt refunds should've gone out to everyone who tried to buy one. If your order has been cancelled and you did not get a refund, please drop a comment in the previous thread. If you are wondering what the end-goal might be, Rorie believes that the site will reprint the new designs and its previous merchandise in a few months but it will involve a whole different billing/shipping situation.

New Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Trailer Shows Preacher Class & Zealot Archetype

2 years 2 months ago

Today Fatshark released a new trailer of its upcoming FPS Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.

This one is interesting as it showcases how the class system works in the game.

You can choose between four archetypes: Zealot, Veteran, Psyker, and Ogryn. You can the n specialize further with a class, and today we take a look specifically at the Preacher class within the Zealot archetype,

As you can imagine, flamers and hammers are commonly seen in their hand, because that’s how you best purge the heretics, albeit their basic weapons are much more humble combat axes and autopistols.

You can check out the trailer below, which shows plenty of gameplay.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will launch on PC and Xbox Series X|S on November 30, 2022. It was supposed to be already out, but it was recently delayed.

Official Berserk Website Teases Mysterious Countdown for 70 Days Away

2 years 2 months ago

We have no idea what this means, but a countdown has appeared on the official Berserk website. Considering the current remaining time is not that far under 70 days, it doesn’t connect to Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition which was released onto Crunchyroll today.

When slipped through Google translate, the heading text of the countdown reads as: “another thing”, but otherwise doesn’t give anything away.

This Berserk countdown will likely lead to an announcement for either a separate anime series or a third season of the 2016 revival that already covered both the Conviction and Falcon of the Millennium Empire arcs in the two seasons that aired. Regardless of what form it takes, it can be expected that this new series/season will be a continuation and cover the Fantasia Arc that started in chapter 308 of the Berserk manga. For reference, 369 chapters have been produced.

All that we have at this time is speculation, as we are just as in the dark about this as you are, and we love it. This has been a packed couple of months for anime releases, and it is also the perfect time for a crazy countdown to appear related to one of the most important manga series of all time.

Any work on new anime materials would be the first to be produced since the death of the influential Berserker mangaka Kentaro Miura.

We will be sure to keep you informed when we know more about what this countdown could be leading us towards.

How To Earn Money Quickly in Phasmophobia

2 years 2 months ago

Equipment in Phasmophobia can make or break your effectiveness and performance in your paranormal investigations, but the tech doesn’t come cheap. You’ll be able to earn money by starting (and surviving) investigations if you hope to ever use the more advanced equipment in the game. It takes time though, so here’s how to earn money quickly in Phasmophobia.

Get Money Quickly in Phasmophobia

If you’re hoping to leave with a big payday in Phasmophobia, it’ll take a bit of legwork before you can start raking in cash at a good pace. To earn money quickly, you’ll have to take advantage of Phasmophobia’s difficulty settings: the higher the difficulty, the more money you’ll earn during an investigation, even if you don’t photograph a ghost.

  1. Unlock ‘Nightmare’ difficulty in Phasmophobia.

To do this, you’ll need to reach level 14. By setting the difficulty to Nightmare, the money you earn will be multiplied exponentially. Up until then, it’s a great opportunity to get acquainted with the smaller maps in Phasmophobia.

  2. After choosing a small map, don’t worry about bringing equipment.

All you need is a camera. Small maps include: Bleasdale Farmhouse, Camp Woodwind, Edgefield Street House, Grafton Farmhouse, Ridgeview Road House, Tangleweed Street House, Willow Street House, and the restricted version of Sunny Meadow’s Mental Institution.

Tencent is "aggressively seeking" majority stakes in more gaming companies

2 years 2 months ago

Chinese megacorp Tencent is reportedly "resetting its mergers and acquisitions (M&A) strategy" by focussing on "buying majority stakes mainly in overseas gaming companies".

According to Reuters, Tencent traditionally acquired minority stakes and was content with being a "passive financial investor", but it is now "aggressively seeking to own majority or even controlling stakes in overseas targets", chiefly in the "core gaming sector". Metaverse assets are also reportedly of interest to Tencent.

Citing "four people with direct knowledge of the matter", Reuters adds that the shift in Tencent's M&A strategy "comes as the world's number one gaming firm by revenue is counting on global markets for its future growth, which requires a strong portfolio of chart-topping games" and follows regulatory issues in its home country.

GTA 5 player wants your help getting around Los Santos legally after failing their in-game driving test

2 years 2 months ago

A GTA 5 player who failed their in-game driving test is only using public transport to get around Los Santos.

After failing their San Andreas driving test, redditor MotorDesigner reached out to the GTA subreddit for advice on the best way to get around the city without a car - legally, in other words, even though the concept is comically novel in any GTA game, of course.

Admittedly, the in-game driving test doesn't look too troublesome - questions include when it's permissible to run a red light, what the correct driving position is, and how best to drive when "getting serviced orally by a girl while driving" - MotorDesigner failed to meet the San Andreas Department of Motor Vehicles' low, low standards, and therefore cannot drive legally in the city.
