Everything You Need to Know About the Warner Bros. Discovery Announcements

1 year 9 months ago

Wondering what is going on with these Warner Bros. Discovery announcements? Want a location where you can come to see everything that has been announced by Warner Bros. Discovery this week? Well, you’ve come to the right place as there are a ton of announcements being made this week, keeping track of which can be pretty confusing.

However, before getting into the details, there are a couple of facts that are crucial to remember regarding this company. First, it’s important to remember that Warner Bros. and Discovery merged to form Warner Bros. Discovery back when the merger was finalized in April 2022. The union was led by David Zaslav, the man who was previously CEO and president of Discovery; once he finished the merger, he got put in charge as the CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery.

You may also be wondering why all this news is coming out today, which leads to the second point: there was a Quarter 2 earnings report today. During today’s meeting, since it was the first full report that was made with the newly merged company, Zaslav had to showcase to investors either growth in revenue and subscribers to their services or the plan by which to accomplish these things; the focus of this call, in particular, being the latter.

With that out of the way, this is everything you need to know about the Warner Bros. Discovery announcements made during the first week of August.

Entertain hungry bird children in weirdo camp sim Camp Canyonwood

1 year 9 months ago

My exposure to summer camps is entirely through films and games. Summer camp culture isn't as much of a thing in the UK, possibly because we're fairly happy to allow our children to learn to tie knots by themselves, by affixing each other to disused railway tracks or sick trees. In any case, the summer camps I've seen portrayed are usually unwholesome ones, because they're good horror fodder. Camp Canyonwood is a camp counsellor sim, out now in early access, where you (an bird) look after a flock of demanding smaller birds. It sounds like it would be twee, except the owner is cutting corners and you dream about a talking jackalope. I have not explored these aspects much because I am constantly trying to feed the children.

DC Movies Will Have 10-Year Plan Like Marvel, According To Warner Bros. Discovery CEO

1 year 9 months ago

DC 10 Year Plan Like Marvel Movies

If you’ve been keeping up with what’s happening at Warner Bros., its streaming service HBO Max, and its new partner company by way of a merge, Discovery – collectively, it’s now Warner Bros. Discovery – then you know things have been bleak the past couple of days.

The HBO Max film, Batgirl, a complete movie, has been canned alongside a sequel to 2020’s Scoob! There are rumors of massive layoffs at HBO Max to the tune of a 70% reduction in staff (thanks, The Wrap), as well as word that in-the-works projects like DC’s Supergirl movie will not be moving forward. Warner Bros. Discovery will roll HBO Max into Discovery's streaming service, Discovery+, with less emphasis on premium scripted content fans of HBO Max have come to know and love, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter

Amidst all this, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has announced that DC movies will be “reset,” according to The Hollywood Reporter in a separate report.

Naughty Dog Releases New Last Of Us Part 1 Comparison Video

1 year 9 months ago

The Last of Us Part 1

PlayStation revealed that the long-rumored remake of The Last of Us was real in a leak hours before Naughty Dog could officially reveal it during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, but alas, it’s real nonetheless.

Following in the steps of its sequel, The Last of Us Part II, the remake is called The Last of Us Part 1, and it’s beautiful. It will also cost $70, and some fans have criticized Naughty Dog and PlayStation for that price, citing that $70 is a high price tag for a game released on the PlayStation 3 before getting remastered for the PlayStation 4 a year later. It also appears to be very much the same game – just with improved graphics and some changes to AI systems and other under-the-hood things. Nonetheless, it’s out on Sept. 1 and will cost $70.

Since the reveal, Naughty Dog has been slowly dolling out information about the upcoming title, including neat comparison videos that showcase how drastic the visual upgrades are. The studio released a new one this morning, this time comparing a sequence with Ellie and Joel riding horses on a road. Check it out for yourself below:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's unmissable second DLC polishes some of the series' best tracks

1 year 9 months ago

Nintendo has finally delivered its second dollop of downloadable tracks for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and it's a doozy. Some of Mario Kart's finest moments are included here, alongside a few other enjoyable additions, throwbacks, and a brand-new entry.

As with the first wave, Nintendo has added eight courses divided into two cups. (Sadly, there's still no sign of extra kart pieces or characters, including Birdo.) And if you're not up to speed (sorry), players have already worked out what many other upcoming DLC courses will likely be.

Up first is New York Minute, a lively track from mobile game Mario Kart Tour's roster featuring a checklist of city landmarks. I'll get this out the way now - I am not enamoured with Mario Kart Tour, and the Mushroom Kingdom purist in me bristles at the inclusion of real-world cities.

Beatmania IIDX 30 Resident Will Come With a New Toby Fox Song

1 year 9 months ago

Beatmania IIDX 30 Resident

The arcade rhythm game series Beatmania IIDX will reach a new milestone with its upcoming thirtieth mainline iteration. Konami has launched a location test for Beatmania IIDX 30 Resident. The new entry will bring more quality-of-life improvements and new songs. Toby Fox is one of the composers contributing to the new tracks.

Masaya "Camellia" Oya revealed on Twitter that he had collaborated with the Undertale creator to produce a new piece of game music titled "Summerblue." The song is available in the location test version. It will appear in the public arcade version after Konami updates the build to Resident.

Konami will upgrade the arcade game's display resolution to Full HD (1080p) when it launches Resident. The new iteration will also have several quality-of-life improvements, such as a Notes Radar-based recommendation folder and a more detailed option to display the Fast and Slow input markers.

Resident—revealed in 2022—will mark the 30th iteration milestone for Beatmania IIDX, but the series celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. While Konami has recently been releasing new iterations on a yearly basis, it used to release them twice a year during the series' early years.

Street Fighter 6 Vibes With Guile’s Music Theme “Sharpened Sonic” With New Video

1 year 9 months ago

Today Capcom kicked off the EVO 2022 celebrations with a new video about its upcoming fighting game Street Fighter 6.

As with similar videos, we don’t see any gameplay, but we can get a good listen at Guile’s music theme, “Sharpened Sonic.”

This is the fifth music reveal made for the game, as a few weeks ago Capcom published the official music video for the main theme, titled Not on the Sidelines, followed by the themes for Chun-Li and new-ish character Lukethe theme for Ryu, and the music created for Jamie.

You can check the track out in the video below.

Guile is one of the most classic Street Fighter characters, having first appeared in the original Street Fighter II.

He was absent from Street Fighter III and had to wait for DLC to appear in Street Fighter V, but he will be part of the initial roster in Street Fighter 6, as he should.

New Chainsaw Man Anime Trailers Bring Story, Voice Acting & Blood

1 year 9 months ago

Two new trailers for Chainsaw Man have dropped, and they offer plenty of new elements for fans to dig into despite their short length.

Released via the MAPPA and Crunchyroll YouTube channels on Aug. 5, the trailers act as quick overviews of the anime’s story and action. MAPPA’s offers the full preview of the series, while Crunchyroll’s trailer acts more as a condensed teaser version of the trailer. Likewise, the voices of several key characters are shown for the the first time, and new bits of animation are overlaid with the voice bites for good measure.

The MAPPA trailer starts with the high ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter Makima offering input on main character Denji’s power to manifest the Chainsaw Devil. She notes how it makes him special even among the Public Safety Devil Hunters. Her subordinate Aki, meanwhile, threatens Denji with death if he doesn’t cooperate with the organization and sides with the Devils, while Power the Blood Devil simply exclaims that it’s “Fight Time.” Then there’s Denji, who threatens to kill someone if they get in his way.

All of this is overlaid over action scenes from the upcoming series. Everything flows with an exceptional amount of Sakuga, and there’s a metric boatload of blood, gore and violence that gives the whole runtime a sense of spectacle.

Both trailers can be viewed down below.

Latest Sonic Origins patch takes aim at Sonic the Hedgehog 2's wonky Tails AI

1 year 9 months ago

Sega has released another round of fixes for Sonic Origins - the publisher's disappointing collection of classic Sonic platformers - this time taking aim at Sonic the Hedgehog 2's troublesome Tails AI.

Sonic Origins was, to put it politely, a bit of a mess when it launched earlier this year, and was plagued by enough presentational and technical issues - as extensively documented by Digital Foundry's John Linneman - that its developer publicly hit out at Sega, saying it was "very unhappy" at the state the game had been launched in.

Since then, Sega has been working to fix some of Origins' more egregious problems, and its latest patch - officially known as update 1.04 - leads with an attempt to remedy a widely reported AI issue that would repeatedly cause Tails to goes off-screen in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, unable to rejoin the action.

Face-Off: MultiVersus vs Super Smash Bros Ultimate

1 year 9 months ago

The Super Smash Bros series is a near-impossible act to follow, but that's exactly the challenge MultiVersus faces as a new, free to play Smash-like from developer Player First Games. Now in open beta on PS5, Xbox Series X, last-gen and PC, it's a 5GB download that lets anyone hop in. It's admittedly light on options - as you may expect from an open beta - but you do get to tinker with 17 characters - all fully voice-acted. Crucially, MultiVersus also launches with robust online play, built from the ground up with rollback netcode - right away giving it an edge over Super Smash Bros Ultimate's online play on Switch. It's off to a good start. Speaking purely on MultiVersus' visual design as an Unreal Engine 4 title though, how much does it get right next to Nintendo's heavyweight? And where does it seem to fall short in its open beta state?

There's support for individual Joy-Cons, which can be used as mini gamepad, and two controllers can also be combined into pairs - as is the case on Switch - for a more traditional controller configuration.

EA put Liverpool star Diogo Jota's 'gamer' celebration in FIFA 23

1 year 9 months ago

This one's a bit Inception: EA has put Liverpool star Diogo Jota's real life 'gamer' celebration in FIFA 23 - a celebration that sees Jota mimicking himself playing FIFA.

Background: one of my favourite video game stories of 2021 was the time when Jota had to quit a FIFA 22 tournament early to play a real-life match that afternoon - and performed a gamer celebration after scoring after just 97 seconds.

Jota celebrated by sitting down and pretending to play FIFA. (Jota continued his impressive form in front of goal by adding a second goal later in the first half. Liverpool went on to win 4-0.)

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Might Be Getting an Iron Man-Inspired Armor Set

1 year 9 months ago

Assassin's Creed Valhalla seems primed to introduce an armor set that references Iron Man.

As spotted by Eurogamer, dataminer AndyReloads has found some sleek new armor hidden in the game’s files, which could be released in a future update. The Advanced Mechanicals Armor Set gives users the ability to use a chest-mounted energy beam, much the same as Iron Man’s unibeam.

The set comes in two colorways, with the Copper edition very much looking like Iron Man's red and gold attire. A second Iron version is a sleek white take that looks more akin to a Star Wars Stormtrooper. Neither includes a specific reference to the movies in question, so these seem to be cheeky references rather than an official crossover.

While wearing this new armor set, your Battle Cry ability is replaced with the unibeam – a forward-firing beam of energy that seemingly does area of effect and fire damage.

Additionally, the Advanced Mechanicals Armor Set includes a few other bits and pieces:

FIFA 23: Hands-On Preview

1 year 9 months ago

FIFA is back for another year, but jokes about the remarkable inevitability of gaming’s football simulation behemoth should be uttered in hushed tones. Not because EA doesn’t deserve flak for its piecemeal iteration, but because FIFA 23 will be the series’ last hurrah ahead of a shock branding change to EA Sports FC in 2023.

The death of such a historic licensing deal creates a sombre atmosphere around this year’s game, but EA is determined to make the end of an era feel jubilant. With expanded crossplay, the addition of women’s club football and two FIFA World Cups in its release window, FIFA 23 plans to go out with a bang. Having spent a whole weekend with an in-progress build of the game, the revised take on gameplay feels appropriately theatrical.

Final FIFA-ntasy

FIFA 23’s most noticeable gameplay change arrives thanks to the addition of power shots, a new way to strike the ball achieved by holding both bumpers and pressing the shoot button. Like a Final Fantasy limit break, the camera swells on the player you’re controlling as they gear up and wallop the ball in an attempt to K.O. the keeper. The trade-off is that the slow wind-up leaves you wide open to be dispossessed, and it’s easy to muck up. This system (which wouldn’t look out of place in Mario Strikers) disrupts the defensive play that plagues FIFA 22, where penalty boxes tend to become impenetrable sardine tins full of defenders, ready to poo-poo all of your most exciting opportunities.

MultiVersus Delay Not Caused by WB Discovery Merger

1 year 9 months ago

It’s no secret that MultiVersus has seen its official launch delayed, and with recent troubles at Warner Bros. Discovery, fans were concerned about the game being a part of that wider issue. But don’t worry – the Season 1 delay is nothing to do with the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.

According to game director Tony Huynh, the MultiVersus delay has absolutely nothing to do with the ongoing disruption at Warner Bros. Discovery.

“For those wondering, we are unaffected by the Discovery/Warner Bros. merger. #MultiVersus,” he said via Twitter.

MultiVersus was released into beta little more than a week agoan online platform fighter from Warner Bros. featuring many of the company’s hottest properties and most recognizable characters.

But while the game is still in open beta, fans have been concerned about what the recent disruptions at Warner Bros. Discovery will mean for the game – especially since some characters (such as Shaggy and Velma) are based on properties that have seen high-profile cancellations.

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games released a new video showing new features being added to the game.

The first part of the video showcases the Snake Pit race track on Clio released as a surprise in alpha 3.17.2, which is quite cool, but even more interesting is what comes in the second part of the video.

We see that alpha 3.8 will mark the addition of Mario Kart-style race tracks within the convention centers to be used with the small but cute Greycat PTV buggies.

You can watch it below.

In other Star Citizen news, the crowdfunding total just passed $492 million and it’s currently sitting on $492,012,019.

The number of registered accounts has recently passed 4 million, having reached 4,029,068 at the moment of this writing.

New Marvel’s Midnight Suns Video Is All About the History of Captain Marvel

Unlike the previous trailer, which was brief and introduced her gameplay, this time around we hear a lot of Captain Marvel from her origins to her interactions with magic, which is a major theme in Midnight Suns.

Given the pattern of previous videos, we can expect a much more extensive video explaining her gameplay soon enough, likely during the weekend.

Descenders is a fun mountain biking game wrapped in a bland roguelike

1 year 9 months ago

I don't think I like the game Descenders ostensibly is, but I enjoy playing. It's a downhill mountain biking game with dangerous speeds and even more dangerous stunts, including leaping through a ring of fire over of a moving train. This is fun. The roguelikelike campaign structure this is all built into, eh, I don't think it has added any enjoyment. But it is very fun to stack a double-backflip, slam into a rock, and watch your ragdoll corpse rocket downhill. It's a good reminder to ride whichever way you enjoy, expectations and pressures be damned.

A Newcomer’s Trek Through Final Fantasy XIV (Feat. Sarah Podzorski) | Game Informer Live

I love Final Fantasy. I’ve played nearly every numbered entry and have beaten most of them. I adore Final Fantasy Tactics. I watched both terrible feature films. My ringtone is the FFVII victory fanfare theme. But the biggest hole in my fandom for years has been Final Fantasy XIV.

MMOs have never appealed to me, but as I listened to friends and colleagues rave about FFXIV over its long existence, the more I felt like I was missing out on something special. Every expansion and free trial had me hovering over the purchase button, but I always told myself I didn’t have the time to invest in such a behemoth of a game. The excuses have come to an end.

As of this writing, the Kirby Cafe has two permanent branches in Japan. The game character-branded cafe used to appear sporadically since at least 2016. The first permanent cafe appeared at Tokyo Skytree Town Solamachi in late 2019. Benelic then launched the second branch on Kyushu island at Canal City Hakata in Fukuoka. The company has yet to announce whether it has any plans to turn the new Nagoya branch into a permanent one as well.
