EVO 2022: Bandai Namco Teases Next Tekken Game

1 year 8 months ago

Bandai Namco has shared just a glimpse of an upcoming Tekken project.

On stage at EVO 2022, after the Tekken 7 Grand Finals, Bandai Namco shared a trailer for its next Tekken 7 update. At the conclusion of a trailer, they showed the iconic Tekken cutscene of Kazuya Mishima throwing his father, Heihachi Mishima off a cliff.

At the point when the cutscene zooms in on Kazuya's face, it instantly swaps from 1994's PlayStation version of Kazuya to a very modern-looking version of the character. "Get Ready" then appears on the screen, before the trailer fades to black. You can skip to the 1:40 mark in the video below to watch the teaser.

EVO 2022: Arc System Works Wants to Be Less Passive With IP Collaborations

1 year 8 months ago

Arc System Works creates some of the best fighting games in the business. From Dragon Ball FighterZ, to Guilty Gear Strive, to the recently released DNF Duel, there's no shortage of great fighting games coming from the studio.

However, beyond recognizable titles like Dragon Ball FighterZ, the studio's offerings are relatively niche when you travel outside of the hardcore fighting game audience, especially in the West. Arc System Works CEO Minoru Kidooka wants to change that.

At EVO 2022, IGN spoke with Kidooka, who said that in the past, Arc System Works had been very passive with regards to collaborating with other IPs, with IP holders being the ones coming to them with the offers for collaboration. Kidooka wants to change that attitude. Moving forward, Kidooka said the studio plans to be less passive in pursuing partnership opportunities. Specifically, Kidooka wants Arc System Works to create games that will resonate with western audiences. Whether that means licenses with global appeal like Dragon Ball or working with franchises that originated in the West remains to be seen.

"We need to expand fighting [game] communities through IP," Kidooka told IGN. "In the future, if we have such an opportunity, we are actively pushing to collaborate with new IP owners."

In the long run, Kidooka's dream is to develop a new Arc System Works IP planned and developed in the US.

Beyond Dragon Ball, Arc System Works has collaborated with a number of different IP owners in the past, working on games featuring Granblue, Persona, One Piece, and more. But the next step for the studio could be partnering with companies to create new fighting games featuring characters with great western appeal.

Marvel Snap Teases Possible She-Hulk Season Pass & Incoming Hell Cow Nerfs

1 year 8 months ago

The season of Love and Thunder is coming to a close in a day, which means that there’s a brand new Season Pass to look forward to in Marvel Snap soon after that. Developers Second Dinner have yet to reveal the theme of the upcoming season, but Marvel Snap designer Stephen Jarrett may have just dropped some big hints in his latest tweet.

The tweet teases the best lawyer in the Marvel universe, which could very well point to Matt Murdock, AKA Daredevil. However, given that the She-Hulk TV series is set to premiere on Disney+ just a week later, it’s looking more likely that She-Hulk will be the featured card for this season instead. We could still possibly see Daredevil as a reward in the season pass, considering that he’s going to have a cameo in the She-Hulk series as well.

Only time will tell, and it’ll be exciting to see how She-Hulk fits into current deck archetypes. Her ability is that her card will cost one less for each unspent Energy last turn, which makes her a decent fit with other cards like Sunspot and Infinaut which encourage players to skip turns.

How to Digivolve in Digimon Survive

1 year 8 months ago

Arguably the most interesting aspect of Digimon Survive, and the franchise as a whole, is Digimon Digivolving. What sets it apart from Pokemon is that a Digimon evolving is never permanent; if you so choose, your Digimon can revert to a previous stage. But if you’re having trouble making it happen, here’s how to Digivolve in Digimon Survive.

Digimon Survive – How to Digivolve

Digimon Survive essentially has two separate ways for your Digimon to Digivolve and it comes down to the importance of that creature. Digimon that are linked to the story, such as Agumon and your friends’ Digimon, are “Partner Digimon.” Digimon you recruit are “Wild Digimon” and they have their own way of Digivolving.

How Evolving Partner Digimon Works

Unfortunately, Partner Digimon can’t evolve until you’ve reached a certain point in the story, and that’s applied to the Digimon your friends have as well. You won’t see Agumon Digivolve until the end of chapter one, for example. While you can’t force them to Digivolve as soon as possible, you do have a say in what their next stage is.

How Larian and Slitherine adapted Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer

1 year 8 months ago

There’s something brilliant about tabletop evenings with friends. My Thursday nights usually involve Dungeons & Dragons. Playing an Arcane Archer from the Feywild, I’m joined by a lively party that includes a Firbolg Druid, Minotaur Barbarian, Goblin Ranger, and Tiefling Warlock. We’ve had some fun adventures these last few years. Defeating mind flayers and a lich, fighting servants of Lolth, I got shanked on a bridge - many memorable moments. Never solved that mysterious case of stray arrows hitting teammates though, very peculiar.

D&D inspires creativity, stimulating imaginations through the theatre of the mind. As a popular adaptation target, it left me wondering how game developers capture the spirit of these game. Nick Pechenin, lead systems designer at Larian Studios, happily answered my questions regarding Baldur’s Gate 3, which works off of D&D’s fifth edition. And I didn’t stop there. I can’t claim to be nearly as familiar with Warhammer as I am D&D, but I also approached publisher Slitherine over Black Lab Games’ Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector.

Speaking with Battlesector's executive producer David Sharrock, he informs me, "When we were coming to the end of our plans for Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, the Slitherine and Black Lab teams sat down and had a chat about where we should go next. The Black Lab Games team were looking to make use of their skills in making great strategy games that look amazing and the Slitherine team had already been in discussions with Games Workshop about how to follow up previous 40k Strategy titles like Armageddon and Sanctus Reach."

Is Battlefront 2 Crossplay? Answered

1 year 8 months ago

Star Wars Battlefront 2 launched a few years ago and was much maligned for how it treated progression and micro-transactions. Now though, the game has improved drastically and it was one of the free PS Plus games back in June 2020. If you’re now jumping into the game, here’s everything you need to know about whether there is crossplay in Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Becoming more and more common place over the last year or so, crossplay allows players on all platforms to play together.

Is There Crossplay in Star Wars Battlefront 2?

In short, no, there is no crossplay in Battlefront 2, which means you will only be able to play with or against other PS4 players if you’ve just downloaded it with PlayStation Plus. Similarly those playing on Xbox consoles will only be able to play with one another, and PC players will be restricted to playing with other PC players.

However, now more than ever, there is the possibility for that to change. For the first time ever, EA has added crossplay to one of their games, adding the functionality to Need for Speed Heat on the day this article was written. More recently, the upcoming FIFA 23 was announced to also feature crossplay in 1v1 online modes.

Of course, Heat is a more recently released game than Battlefront 2, so it makes more sense that crossplay would come to that, but it suggests that EA are becoming more open to adding the feature to their games.

New Fatal Fury Garou Project Announced by SNK

1 year 8 months ago

Fatal Fury Garou

The legendary fighting game series is coming back. SNK announced at EVO 2022 that it "green-lit" a new Fatal Fury / Garou project for development. This would be the first such project in the works since 1999's Garou: Mark of the Wolves (a.k.a. Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves).

Check out SNK's new Fatal Fury teaser trailer below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YP3wVygHLg

All in all, the teaser reveals very little about the project. Its naming to Fatal Fury/Garou and the use of Rock Howard in the teaser art implies that it's a follow-up to Mark of the Wolves, at least. In Garou, Rock Howard, son of longtime villain Geese Howard, is a student of series hero Terry Bogard, as well. SNK's announcement also trumpets the project as "the long awaited sequel". Besides the art, the teaser trailer displayed cryptic hints as to the nature of the story. Lines like "The City of Legend Still Breathes," "Hungry Wolves Back on the Prowl," and "A New Destiny Hidden in the Darkness" promise new plotlines spinning off from the narrative of 20 years ago.

Though a Fatal Fury game hasn't made an appearance in over two decades, its characters have kept busy in other games. They've often shown up in the rosters of various King of Fighters titles. Terry Bogard himself even joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2019 as a DLC fighter.

Street Fighter 6 introduces series' first female African American fighter

Kimberly has a moveset that makes the most of "traditional ninja techniques" but with an added "urban twist". This includes a rather creative use of spray cans and her "trusty portable cassette player". As you would expect, this girl can pack a punch!

Along with Kimberly, Juri will also make her return on Street Fighter 6's release. Apparently she will be "as wicked as ever", with a moveset that will be both new and yet still reassuringly familiar. You can see the ladies' full reveal below.

Nintendo Announces Splatoon 3 Direct For This Week

1 year 8 months ago

Splatoon 3 Nintendo Direct

Nintendo has revealed that it will live stream a Splatoon 3 Direct this week.

More specifically, it will begin at 6 a.m. PT on Wednesday, Aug. 10, and will feature roughly 30 minutes of updates. Check out the announcement for yourself below:

As you can see, there’s not much else to glean from this news. If you’re the kind of person who anticipates game-focused Directs to reveal information about other anticipated titles, I would say you should not do that with this one. It seems very much a “we’re only going to talk about Splatoon 3” kind of Direct announcement. Of course, I could be wrong, but you know, expectations and all that.

However, if you’re a Splatoon fan, it sounds like Wednesday will be an excellent day. Not only are you getting new Splatoon 3 details and information, but “roughly 30” minutes of it – that’s a lot! As for what to expect, new weapons, characters, maps, and story details will likely be showcased. This will probably be the last Splatoon 3-focused Direct, too, considering the game hits Switch less than a month after it on Sept. 9.

SNK Reveals A New Fatal Fury Game, The First In More Than 20 Years, Is Now In Development

1 year 8 months ago

New Fatal Fury Game Announced By SNK

SNK revealed during the Evo 2022 fighting game tournament held in Las Vegas that a new Fatal Fury game has been greenlit and is now in development.

This news comes from a short teaser trailer that showcases a new look at some Fatal Fury art alongside the following message, which plays on screen: “The city of legend still breathes. Hungry wolves back on the prowl. A new destiny hidden in darkness. New Fatal Fury/Garou green-lit.”

Check it out for yourself below:

As you can see, SNK didn’t reveal much else, and if you’re a Fatal Fury fan, you probably have many questions. Will this new game adopt a 3D art style like other modern fighting franchises such as Street Fighter 6, or will it stick with traditional 2D art? Which fighters are returning? Will there be new fighters? Only time will tell.

If you’re unfamiliar with Fatal Fury, you might recognize the name Terry Bogard, who regained some popularity after his inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He’s the protagonist of the Fatal Fury fighting game series. If you don’t recognize that name either, nobody can blame you – the last Fatal Fury game came out 23 years ago, with Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves’ release in 1999.

(Spoiler)’s Death in My Hero Academia Could Make the Series Legendary

1 year 8 months ago

To say the My Hero Academia series has reached a key turning point would be a massive understatement.

In the latest chapter of the manga, Katsuki Bakugo met his match while fighting against the All for One-controlled Shigaraki. Despite having the assistance of Best Jeanist, Endeavor, UA’s Big Three and several other heroes, he was forced to face down the final big bad in a near hopeless confrontation to buy even a little more time before Deku could arrive. Though he put up a good fight, he paid for the decision with his life and is now among the first major casualties of the final arc.

Though not unheard of in Shonen manga and certainly not the first loss in the series, the death of a character as major as Bakugo is a huge moment for My Hero Academia. While past deaths carried weight, none of them felt as personal as that of the hotheaded Class 1-A member. Fans got to see him grow and learn from Chapter 1 on, going from Deku’s key antagonist and rival to arguably his closest friend. They got to see him truly learn what it means to be a hero, and give up his dreams so that others could pursue theirs.

Seeing his character arc come full circle in this way is a masterstroke that easily puts the series over the top. Or at least, it does so long as Kōhei Horikoshi and Shonen Jump have the courage to stick with the decision.

Naruto Hand Signs Explained

1 year 8 months ago

Naruto is one of the most beloved and iconic anime out there, instantly recognizable to both anime diehards and more casual observers of the medium. It tells the story of the young ninja Naruto Uzumaki on his journey to becoming Hokage, the leader of the ninja village Konoha. In order to use the many cool abilities the show is famous for, ninjas use a complicated series of hand signs in order to activate them. Let’s take a look at these Naruto hands signs and explain how they work.

Naruto – All Hand Signs Explained

The hand signs in Naruto (also known as seals) are a way for a ninja to summon and mold the chakra required to perform a specific ninjutsu or genjutsu technique. Each technique varies, but generally, multiple hand signs must be performed, in rapid succession, in order to activate an ability, such as Naruto’s Shadow Clone Jutsu. As these hand signs must often be performed under extreme duress, such as during battle, memorization of the exact sequence is required.

There are 12 basic hand signs, each associated with a different constellation of the Chinese zodiac. This means there are potentially thousands of combinations for aspiring ninja to master.

Demons happened. There's your plot. More specifically, they apparently happened to everyone except you, but the process still messed with your tv, so there's nothing for it but to fight your way through them to some kind of solution.

Demons Happened is a curious blend of very rapid action faintly reminiscent of Hotline Miami, and an Abe's Oddysee type of puzzle game. Such disparate genres don't often blend as well as this, and I'm disappointed that it hasn't got a bigger reception.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Will Have Rollback Netcode

dragon ball fighterz rollback netcode

During EVO 2022, Dragon Ball FighterZ producer Tomoko Hiroki announced that the game will have rollback netcode. This will only be for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC versions of the game. During the same announcement, Hiroki said that the game will no longer receive updates in the forms of new characters or balance updates. [Thanks, HD_Kirin!]

Here is a clip of Hiroki announcing rollback netcode during EVO 2022. You can hear the cheers of the audience as soon as she says the words, even before the translator can translate for her:

https://twitter.com/HD_Kirin/status/1556206791318376448

As a reminder, rollback netcode is a function that helps to smooth out online multiplayer experience. Rather than waiting for your opponent to input their commands, it predicts the movement and self-corrects if the prediction is wrong. This means that your gameplay experience should feel smooth regardless of ping. Other games that introduced rollback netcode include Street Fighter 6, BlazBlue Centralfiction, and King of Fighters 2022 Unlimited Match

Tekken 8 May Have Been Teased at Evo 2022

1 year 8 months ago

Tekken 8 Evo 2022

Bandai Namco made an appearance at the Evo 2022 competitive event this year, making a handful of important announcements. In addition to a few updates and adjustments for Tekken 7, the company may have also teased an upcoming Tekken 8 at Evo 2022. While yet unconfirmed, the official Tekken account has acknowledged the teaser and urged fans to "watch until the end".

The teaser appeared just after a series of updates for Tekken 7 and the announcement of the global finals dates. The update for Tekken 7 will release on August 17, 2022. The free update will reportedly include balance adjustments and new tactics. Furthermore, the Tekken World Tour 2022 Global Finals will be making its return in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on February 4 and 5, 2023.

At the end of the video, after a Tekken 7 title card, the ending scene of the original Tekken appears. After defeating his father in battle, Kazuya throws Heihachi off of a cliff and then smiles. Notably, this also mirrors the ending of Tekken 7. Suddenly, the video changes from the original polygonal graphics to a modern, high-definition version of Kazuya. Kazuya's left eye glows red as he smiles into the camera, with the words "Get Ready" appearing beside him.
