Darkest Dungeon 2 is out now in early access

2 years 6 months ago

Darkest Dungeon 2 has launched in early access, inviting us all on a delightfully stressful wagon ride. The sequel to Red Hook Studios' dark roguelike moves away from expeditions in the gloomy Hamlet, and instead sends you on a journey through horrific lands to stop an apocalypse. The devs recently told me about why they're taking their gothic tale on the road, and it has something to do with wanting to emulate a rather uncomfortable road trip.

Blaseball Returns to Fundamentals Next Month With Short Circuits

2 years 6 months ago

Blaseball, the absurdist player-driven online fantasy sport, is making a return after its last lengthy hiatus ("siesta") on November 1 with Short Circuits — a mini-series of sorts intended to reimagine the game from the ground up.

Short Circuits are "a low-stakes mini-series of temporary universes where anything can happen," each lasting two weeks. The first Short Circuit, which starts on November 1 at 8am PT/11am ET, will last for two "seasons," with each season lasting a week.

A%20look%20at%20a%20set%20of%20games%20from%20Blaseball%26%2339%3Bs%20previous%20era%2C%20with%20teams%20such%20as%20the%20Baltimore%20Crabs%2C%20Mexico%20City%20Wild%20Wings%2C%20Boston%20Flowers%2C%20and%20Chicago%20Firefighters%20playing%20simultaneously.

Historically, Blaseball's major storylines have taken place over the course of two major "eras," each consisting of several seasons lasting about a week. Short Circuits is not considered a full era in Blaseball, but rather is serving as a test ground for developer The Game Band to return the game to its fundamentals and use feedback to ensure future eras are a more welcoming experience to new players.

Blaseball Has Always Existed, And It's Coming Back With Short Circuits

2 years 6 months ago

Fans who have missed mixing simulated betting and cosmic horror can rejoice; Blaseball: Short Circuits will be ready to play ball November 1 at 8 AM PT. If you didn’t witness the realty-tearing chaos of The Grand Unslam or defy the Blaseball gods in the Snackrifice, don’t worry. Blaseball’s creator, The Game Band, characterizes Short Circuits as a kind of clean slate, making it great for newcomers.

The beta run of Blaseball ended in the summer, but The Game Band promised to bring it back, along with its 24 familiar teams. While it’s not the full relaunch, Short Circuits will offer both new and returning players the opportunity to influence Blaseball’s next form by giving feedback on fresh betting and election mechanics. The upcoming series’ name reflects its brief nature, as each Short Circuit is only two weeks long. Every bi-weekly event will sport completely different rules and structures to help the developers strike that perfect balance for Blaseball 1.0. Hopefully, this feature-testing event means the full, reimagined Blaseball release is coming soon.

A Quiet Place Video Game Announced For 2022

2 years 6 months ago

A video game based on the hit horror film franchise, A Quiet Place, is in the works. The upcoming title comes from Saber Interactive and Illogika and is coming sometime in 2022.

If you're unfamiliar with the movies, they're set in a post-apocalyptic Earth overtaken by blind yet powerful monsters that are highly sensitive to sound. The creatures have wiped out most of humanity and viciously hunt anything that generates noise, so survivors have adapted by living in complete silence. Precautions include maintaining isolation from other humans and using sign language to communicate. A Quiet Place hit theaters in 2018, and its sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, premiered in May of this year, both to critical acclaim.

A Quiet Place (the game) takes place in the same universe as the films but tells an original story. Style-wise, it's a single-player story-driven horror adventure, but neither Saber nor Illogika has revealed more than that. However, the companies promise to share more information later this year, hopefully including what platforms the game will appear on.

How to enable Auto HDR in Windows 11

2 years 6 months ago

Windows 11 may not be an essential upgrade yet, but its Auto HDR feature is mightily impressive: in games that don’t support HDR (high dynamic range) natively, it can apply similar brightness-boosting, colour-emboldening effects. There’s no performance loss, so if you’ve going to upgrade to Windows 11 on your gaming rig, it’s worth giving Auto HDR a try – and this guide will show you how to enable it.

You can batter people with fish in Chivalry 2's new tavern brawl mode

2 years 6 months ago

Swords are cool and all but the medieval fight I find a delight is a tavern brawl, so I'm chuffed to heck to see Chivalry 2 focus on them in a new mode. 'Brawl' mode has players rumble through feasts and halls, fighting with found weapons including chairs, steins, and giant fish. Oh yes, thank you. Also in the field of delightful foolishness is a new headbutt move for armless players to launch one desperate last attack.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: 20 Easter Eggs and Their Comic Origins

2 years 6 months ago

Spoiler warning: this article features no story spoilers for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, but does discuss one location from the game and details twenty items that can be found there.

Despite its pop music soundtrack, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is not based on the James Gunn MCU movie of the same name. Its inspirations go back to the comics, and with that comes a whole bunch of Marvel Easter eggs. A huge amount of these can be conveniently found in one location: The Collector’s Emporium. And while all of them are labelled up to make sure you’re not left in that dark, none of them reveal their comic book origins. And that’s where we come in: our video below looks at every item in the Collector’s Emporium, and the Marvel history behind them.

For a closer look, we've also put together a full gallery of each and every item in The Collector's Emporium, with descriptions of each one. Check them all out below.

A new video released by The Pokémon Company details two gym leaders, Team Galactic, the legendary Lake Trio, and the early-purchase rewards for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

It showcases two of the games’ gym leaders: Candice, the ice-type gym leader located in Snowpoint City, and Volkner, the electric-type gym leader in Sunyshore City. We get a brief look at their in-game chibi models and their standard models that appear during battles.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus Trailer Shows Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark in Action

2 years 6 months ago

Last week, we were treated to two videos for the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Arceus that teased and then unveiled some new Pokemon. Today, we see a proper reveal for these Pokemon, Hisuian Zorua and its evolution Zoroark, as well as learn new information about them.

We see both new Pokemon in a snowy part of the Hisui region. Normally, Zorua and Zoroark are Dark-type Pokemon, originally residing in the Unova region. Their new regional forms look different and have different typings.

Hisuian Zorua is known as the “spiteful fox” Pokemon and is both Normal- and Ghost-type. Hisuian Zoroark, its evolution, is known as the “baneful fox” Pokemon, and is also a Normal- and Ghost-type.

This typing is special for a few reasons. It’s the first Normal/Ghost dual type Pokemon so far. Also, it has three immunities: normal and fighting due to its ghost typing, and ghost due to its normal typing. Additionally, it only has one weakness, which is dark-type Pokemon.

We also learned some of the lore about these Pokemon: Zorua migrated to the Hisui region after being shunned by humans but were unable to survive in the harsh environment. Their ghost typing is a result of their lingering souls being reborn “through the power of their malice.”

Zorua and Zoroark aren’t the first Hisuian Pokemon we’ve seen for Pokemon Legends: Arceus so far. We’ve also seen a few other Pokemon sport this new regional form, such as Growlithe and Braviary.

A Quiet Place Video Game Announced

2 years 6 months ago

A video game based on A Quiet Place is currently in development and due for release in 2022.

The game is being created by Saber Interactive, iLLOGIKA, and EP1T0ME, and is said to be an "untold story of survival in the A Quiet Place universe", suggesting this will not follow the events of the acclaimed horror movies from John Krasinski.

"This first official video game set in the terrifying A Quiet Place universe will deliver an original story and gameplay that captures the compelling suspense, emotion and drama for which the series is famous," said a statement from Saber Interactive. "The game is in development by iLLOGIKA, the Montreal-based studio with veteran talent from the Rainbow Six and Far Cry franchises, and published by Saber Interactive, the Embracer Group company behind the hit game World War Z and the upcoming Evil Dead: The Game."

An official website is already live, but provides nothing beyond a logo and a promise that the game is "coming 2022".

The original A Quiet Place movie received a glowing review from us, and we were also impressed by its sequel. Krasinski has discussed the possibility of making the series a trilogy, but this is the first word of his world going beyond the borders of cinema and into the realm of games.

Step back from the brink in Precipice

2 years 6 months ago

Brinkmanship doesn't get explored all that much in games. Precipice is almost certainly derived from Balance of Power, a political strategy simulation from 1985 about the Cold War powers and their winner-armageddons-all staring contest. It was impressively original, complex, and completely unplayable. Happily, Precipice has kept most of what made that game interesting to begin with, and dumped the baggage.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Trailer Shows off Gym Leaders, Legendaries, and Team Galactic

2 years 6 months ago

A new trailer was released this morning for the upcoming remakes Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. This video features a few of the gym leaders and legendary Pokemon of the Sinnoh region as well as the sinister Team Galactic members.

First, we meet Candice, the gym leader of Snowpoint City. We get a glimpse of the snowball puzzle in her gym as well as her Ice-type Pokemon Abomasnow. Next up, the trailer shows Electric-type gym leader Volkner alongside his Luxray and the revolving platform puzzle in Sunyshore City gym.

In the trailer, we see both the overworld character models as well as the in-battle models for these two gym leaders that will be shown throughout Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Next up, we’re introduced to Team Galactic, the evil team of the Sinnoh region. The trailer highlights how they have caused trouble in various places, such as stealing Pokemon. We see the commanders Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter as well as the Team Galactic Boss, Cyrus.

Finally, the trailer ends with a tease for the legendary Pokemon that we’ll encounter in the game. Of course, if you’ve played the originals, this won’t be too much of a surprise to you, but the video describes them as “legendary Pokemon that slumber beneath Sinnoh’s lakes.”

This is where we will encounter the legendary Pokemon Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie, the lake guardians that represent knowledge, emotion, and willpower.

If you’d like to watch this new trailer in full, you can do so below. You can also learn about more features coming to Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, such as additions to the Poketch app and strolling Pokemon, right here.

Returnal Update Adds Save System and Photo Mode

2 years 6 months ago

A new version 2.0 update for PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal has added a system that allows players to temporarily save their progress and shut down their console. This fixes a long-standing player complaint, and will allow players to play a run of the roguelike across multiple sessions of play.

Revealed on the PlayStation Blog, the new system is called Suspend Cycle. This feature allows you to pause your current run, exit the game, and turn off your console. Rebooting the game will then allow you to continue your run.

It's important to note that while Suspend Cycle creates a save state, this save is not permanent, and can only be reloaded once. As Returnal's Game Director, Harry Krueger, explains: "The structure of the game remains unchanged, so this functionality is not a traditional mid-game “Save Game” option: by suspending the cycle, Returnal will simply create a single use suspend point, and once you resume playing the suspend point is deleted and cannot be used again. Your game will continue directly from the moment you left it, and if you want to suspend the cycle again, your progress will be captured from that new point onwards."

"With this approach, we can keep the roguelike spirit and “high stakes” commitment to your run intact, while still providing some quality-of-life convenience for players who like to experience Returnal in shorter bursts," concluded Krueger.

The Suspend Cycle system does have some limitations; it will not be able to create suspend points during boss battles, cinematics, first-person sequences, or "intense combat scenarios".

Nioh Developers Kou Shibusawa & Team Ninja Working on New Action Game Set in the Three Kingdoms

2 years 6 months ago

Today Koei Tecmo is hosting the 40th-anniversary celebration of Kou Shibusawa, and the seasoned developer had an announcement to make.

He’s working with Team Ninja on a brand new action game set in the Three Kingdoms.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, Kou Shibusawa is the stage name of Youichi Erikawa, founder of Koei. The name has also been applied to Koei Tecmo’s brand focusing on historical games.

Kou Shibusawa and Team Ninja is the same combination that brought us Nioh. Combine that with the exceptional pedigree of the two brands for historical games and action games respectively, and you’ll probably realize that this is a very relevant announcement.

No details were provided about what the game will entail, but Shibusawa-san mentioned that the Three Kingdom settings received strategy games, MMORPGs, and even card games, but the times are mature for an action game.

We know that Koei Tecmo plans to release a new game within a new IP by fiscal year 2023 that they believe would be capable to achieve 5 million units sold.

We don’t know if this is the game mentioned in those plans, but considering that the Nioh series has passed 6 million units combined, it’s not farfetched to think that it could be.

We’ll have to wait for the developer to be ready to reveal the game, but the perspective is certainly exciting.

Returnal 2.0 Update Adds Suspend Cycle And Photo Mode

2 years 6 months ago

Returnal came out earlier this year and while it reviewed quite well, especially here at Game Informer where we gave it a 9.5 out of 10, one critique some had with the roguelite was that it needed some kind of save system.

Before the 2.0 update, if you needed to stop a run in Returnal, there was no way to save – all your progress would be lost when you turn off your PlayStation 5. Returnal runs can easily last hours and it wasn’t great when something came up that caused you to leave your PS5 as it essentially meant your hours of time would now amount to nothing. It seems Housemarque heard those asking for some kind of save system loud and clear because Update 2.0, which is now live in-game, features a new Suspend Cycle.

Returnal Update 2.0 Finally Adds Save Cycle Feature in Addition to New Photo Mode

2 years 6 months ago

Returnal is surely one of 2021’s best games of the year so far, but its punishing difficulty due to the lack of a conventional save function was a big talking point when it launched back in April. Developer Housemarque was quick to suggest it could implement the feature soon after but hasn’t been able to deliver until now.

Finally, though, as part of Update 2.0, a ‘suspend cycle’ has been added to the game and now allows players to pause their progress and resume from where they left off. It doesn’t sound as though it’s quite the same as a typical save system that returns you to a determined checkpoint, but it does mean you can at least stop playing and then pick back up from the exact same spot.

Prior to this, of course, you would start way back at Helios at the beginning of whichever Act you were playing, which could mean the loss of hours of play time — a challenge some adored, but others loathed. This should at least offer a balance between the two.

Other new features included in today’s update include a brand new photo mode that offers players a chance to compose all sorts of beautiful screenshots.

Here’s an overview of the full Returnal Update 2.0 patch notes:

New features:

  • Suspend Cycle – Pause the cycle and resume your run later!
  • Photo Mode – Capture the bullet-hell action or the dark beauty of Atropos; compose your shot, apply your favorite filters, and share with the world!

This update also includes numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.
