Leaked Videos Appear To Offer the First Glimpse Of Facebook's Oculus Pro

2 years 6 months ago

New leaks from Oculus appear to show a first look at the rumored Oculus Pro VR headset, The Verge reports.

Videos and images from the servers of Facebook, which owns Oculus, first leaked to Reddit before being downloaded by The Verge. The videos show CG characters interacting with a new, darker VR headset and participating in activities like meetings, character customization, and games like Beat Saber.

Though the videos are CG, they show off what appears to be full body motion tracking, new Oculus Touch-style controllers (without the ring that goes around your hands), a charging dock, and the Horizon Workrooms app, where users will host meetings and use presentation tools like a 3D image of a building blueprint.

Halo 3's Original Servers Shutting Down Along With the Rest Of the Series On Xbox 360

2 years 6 months ago

343 Industries has revealed the date when the online multiplayer servers for several Halo games on Xbox 360 will close down: January 13, 2022. Back on December 18, 2020, the studio announced these servers would shut down no earlier than one year after it had posted the notice, but now a definitive date has been decided.

"To date, we’ve juggled future-facing work and priorities with continued upkeep of Halo’s Xbox 360 legacy services. Maintaining these legacy services today requires significant time and resources which directly impacts the studio’s ability to support current and future projects like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite," wrote 343 Industries in a statement.

As the player base of these games on Xbox 360 dwindle more and more, the imbalance between maintaining the Xbox 360 servers and working on recent projects increases. Additionally, the digital sales of the Xbox 360 Halo games have greatly slowed down and new physical sales of them were halted back in 2018.

The following games are affected: Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo Wars, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and Spartan Assault. While the multiplayer functions of these games will be limited following the server closures in January, the games will remain playable offline. Along with finally deciding on a date for sunsetting the servers, 343 Industries also showed off some footage of Halo Infinite's campaign this morning.

Furnace Board Game Review

2 years 6 months ago

In the late ’90s, a certain kind of title came to dominate board gaming. Typified by classics like Catan and Carcassonne they were easy to learn and offered with a great balance of strategy, randomness, and player interaction. As time went on, the former came to dominate the latter two and games were heavier and dryer.

Furnace is very much a return to that older paradigm, and for many players it’s a welcome return. Casting players as businessmen during the industrial revolution, you’ll need to buy businesses that create a supply chain from which you can make the most profit. And like a lot of games of this ilk, it’s a whole lot more fun than it might sound.

Box and What’s Inside

Strictly speaking, Furnace is a card game because it has no board. Instead, the box contains some cardboard tokens, wood pieces to represent oil, coal and iron, four wooden discs for each player, and some decks of cards. The art is great across all the components, echoing the technical illustrations of the era in which it is set. It also has a novel turn tracker that mimics a turning gear.

What’s not so great is the card quality. They’re of very thin stock which will wear quickly, with an annoying texture that makes them stick to each other but not the table or your fingers. They’re a pain to handle but the issue is easily solved with some cheap card sleeves.

These New Duke-Style Controllers Celebrate 20 Years of Xbox

2 years 6 months ago

Does the original Xbox inspire a spark of warm nostalgia in your heart? If so, you may be pleased to hear you can preorder a new set of wired controllers modeled after the classic Duke controller. Made by the accessory maker Hyperkin, these controllers are coming out in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Xbox. There's a black one and a white one, plus a translucent purple one celebrating Cortana, the AI assistant from the Halo series. The controllers will ship December 15 and carry an MSRP of $89.99.

Preorder Duke Controller 20th Anniversary Limited Edition

Note that these are wired controllers, so they can't be played wirelessly. That said, the USB-C cable is removable for storage purposes. For the white and black models, the original Xbox startup animation plays right on the controller's Xbox button. For the purple one, you'll see a Cortana montage play in the same spot.

The bumper buttons mirror the black and white buttons. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can play using a wired headset. The controllers feature vibration and have precision analog triggers.

Given the price and the form factor, these controllers won't appeal to everyone. But if you're an Xbox fan of a certain age, there's an undeniable appeal to these throwback designs.

FaZe Clan Going Public At An Estimated $1 Billion

2 years 6 months ago

Esports and gaming organization FaZe Clan has announced its plans to go public through a merger that will value the company as a whole at around $1 billion.

The merger is with a blank check company called B. Riley Principal 150 Merger Corp — essentially a company that is founded and raises money specifically for the purpose of merging with or being acquired by another company. As a part of the merger, BRPM will pay an estimated $291 million to FaZe, which will be used to fund its ongoing global growth efforts —including potential future acquisitions. BRPM will change its name to FaZe Holdings Inc, and the combined company will trade under the ticker symbol FAZE.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022 and will see FaZe CEO Lee Trink remain in his role in addition to becoming chairman of the board.

FaZe Clan, begun in 2010 as a Call of Duty team, now purports to have a combined social media reach of over 350 million across both its own channels as well as its network of content creators. Its esports teams span games such as Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, PUBG, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, FIFA, Valorant, Fortnite, and Rocket League, and its brand has expanded across online gaming, lifestyle products, sport merchandise, and other various digital content offerings.

This article was amended after publication with the correct abbreviation for B. Riley Principal 150 Merger Corp.

DF Direct Weekly talks God of War PC, new Apple Silicon and Cyberpunk 2077/Witcher 3 RT upgrades

2 years 6 months ago

DF Direct Weekly returns once again, with myself, John and Alex taking a time-out from our various individual projects to discuss the latest gaming and tech news. Our chat kicks off with the arrival of new Apple Silicon found with the brand new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. M1 Pro and M1 Max look absolutely monstrous and from a GPU perspective alone, we're looking at a doubling then a quadrupling of the already impressive M1. In the new Direct, we share our thoughts on strategy but ask the fundamental question beyond some truly impressive tech: will this extremely capable, super-efficient technology ever really be put through its paces in gaming? Is a profound commitment to gaming beyond the iOS ecosystem even worth considering for Apple, when its mobile ecosystem is likely to be so much more profitable?

Beyond that, discussion moves on to last week's announcement of God of War for PC, complete with select new graphical features, unlocked frame-rates, ultrawide support and the pleasantly surprising inclusion of Nvidia DLSS. It's not clear just how much of an improvement the new features add, but it'll be interesting to see if DLSS and other upscaling features are added to other Sony titles, such as the forthcoming Uncharted collection. We also discuss Sony's global vision: in a recent gamesindustry.biz video interview, Jim Ryan talked about addressing addressing millions more users with Sony titles, which inevitably leads to discussions about the cloud and therefore the concept of PC ports happening as a matter of course. Unless, of course, Sony is intent on packing out datacentres with PS5 hardware - which seems unlikely, especially in light of the mooted deal with Microsoft.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits Has Already Recouped Its Development Costs

2 years 6 months ago

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was released in September to largely positive reviews (including a 9 out of 10 from us) and has performed well in sales. So much so that, according to developer Ember Labs, the game has already broken even on its development cost.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Ember Lab heads Josh and Mike Grier discussed Kena's road from development to release. To their surprise, the game has apparently sold well, and while they don't divulge specific sale numbers, they say it's already recouped its initial development costs. It's unclear how much money Kena had behind it, but this is great news for the small studio.

"It's hard to tell what's a huge success," said Josh in the article. "Sony's happy."

Beat Saber’s Multiplayer Mode Now Live On PSVR

2 years 6 months ago

After nearly a year-long delay, Beat Saber’s multiplayer mode is now live on PSVR.

Live today, this mode brings five-player multiplayer to the critically acclaimed rhythm game, which has players slice through colored blocks to the beat of a given song. Players can hop into public matches with players from all over the world, or they can face off against their friends in private matches.

Click here to watch embedded media

Any song from the PSVR version of Beat Saber’s soundtrack can be selected, as can DLC music packs from artists like Linkin Park and more. With this update, you’ll also be able to create and customize your very own multiplayer avatar. This avatar is what your opponents will see in the new Beat Saber lobby and multiplayer arena.

Launching with this update today, Multiplayer Badges have been added to the game, and these let opponents see who’s best at what. For example, one player might earn a badge for “most precise slicer" after a match, while another might receive a badge for being the slowest slicer. With up to five players in a match, too, new customizable color options have been implemented. If you don’t want to slice the game’s standard red and blue blocks, you can switch it up to yellow and purple, teal and pink, or something else entirely.

Judge rejects Activision Blizzard's attempt to pause California sexual harassment lawsuit

2 years 6 months ago

Activision Blizzard's attempt to pause California's ongoing lawsuit alleging sexual harassment and a "frat boy" culture at the company has been rejected by an LA County Court judge.

Activision Blizzard moved to pause legal proceedings following a messy tussle between California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), which had launched the original lawsuit against the publisher, and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) - which had previously announced an $18m settlement deal with Activision as part of its own investigation into the company.

The Dark Pictures Anthology’s Next Game And Season One Finale Is The Devil In Me

2 years 6 months ago

Supermassive Games' next entry in its Dark Pictures Anthology is called The Devil in Me, which will serve as the season finale for the series. Those who finished House of Ashes, the third installment in the series that launched last Thursday (here's our review), we're treated to a teaser trailer for the next horrific adventure.

If you're asking, "wait, season finale?" Supermassive announced the Anthology as an eight-game series. This label signifies that the franchise is divided into two seasons of four games, with The Devil in Me evidently wrapping up the first half. The trailer sets the stage for a story revolving around some sort of serial killer and doesn't appear overtly supernatural at first glance, but we should hopefully learn more soon. While Supermassive hasn't released the trailer itself, players have already shared it online. Check it out in the tweet below.

Payday 3 Will Be Set in a 'Living, Enormous' New York City

2 years 6 months ago

After years of waiting, Payday fans finally have some new info on Payday 3. Publisher Starbreeze Studios and developer Overkill Software revealed some new details during the Payday 10th Anniversary livestream event.

Payday 3 will take place in a "living, enormous representation" of New York City, director Erik Wonnevi said. Payday 2 was primarily set in the boroughs of Washington, DC, while the original Payday was set in a fictional "Newport City" as well as Miami

Payday 3 will also take place several years after the events of Payday 2, bringing back characters like Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf as they leave retirement and return to their criminal ways.

Technology has come a long way since Payday 2 released in 2013, and Starbreeze looks to be capitalizing on that fact for gameplay purposes. Software giants, cryptocurrency, mass surveillance, and even the dark web will all play some sort of role for the gang, such as updated gadgetry.

Please, stop with all the godawful emails about NFT gaming

2 years 6 months ago

It started a few months ago: we got an email about shoes designed using 'blockchain technology', and had a good laugh about it as a concept. But in retrospect, this email was merely the ripple on a glass of water that go ahead of a T-Rex's mighty tread. Except in this analogy the T-Rex is one of 10,001 unique dinosaurs programatically generated from different traits. And it's wearing wacky sunglasses and smoking a pipe.
