2 years 6 months ago

The Operation Motherland update, due out 2nd November, revolves around the new Conquest mode, which is described as an alternative mode to Ghost Recon Breakpoint's story mode. Here's the setup:

Nintendo's N64 and Mega Drive Switch Online apps have been datamined, revealing some solid hints at upcoming games, as well as how many are currently planned.

Each console app contains a numbered list of games ordered alphabetically, with gaps for upcoming titles. But some of these gaps are so small it is obvious which game will alphabetically fill the space (thanks, MondoMega).

Moonglow Bay Review – A Simple Slice-of-Life at Sea

2 years 6 months ago

Moonglow Bay had me from the moment I laid eyes on its gorgeous voxel art visuals, and the promise of a slice-of-life fishing sim and all the trivial tasks that come part and parcel of that was a gameplay loop I couldn’t wait to engage with. Fishing, cooking, earning money, helping renovate a rather tired town — Sign me up, I thought! The reality of playing the game, though, wasn’t quite as compelling as I had hoped. And now after now having now spent over 15 hours soaking up the sights and sounds of Moonglow Bay, I’m not sure all the reeling was quite worth the catch.

Moonglow Bay’s story premise is simple enough. After a horrible accident, your partner has been killed and you’re left in the rundown town of Moonglow Bay, determined to have another go at making a living fishing and selling your produce as your late beloved had always wanted you to. A town once known for its fishing industry is now home to citizens scared of setting sail after having heard folk tales of monsters sending the unsuspected to a watery death. So, surprise surprise, it’s down to you to kickstart the industry by catching the freshest fish the bay has to offer.

There’s a lot of heart and charm that has been packed into its story and dialog, and a lot of things I love Moonglow Bay for as a result. Its core themes of friendship, community, and essentially, being environmentally friendly are a heartwarming combo and make for a suitably feel-good atmosphere throughout, regardless of the turbulent tides that your character — and the rest of Moonglow Bay — face.

A Little Golf Journey review - a streamlined delight

2 years 6 months ago

I'm not sure you've played golf until you've played it in the moonlight. In the moonlight under the pink blossom - I think it's blossom - with the fireflies coasting and the lanterns - I think they're lanterns - shining from their perches. A Little Golf Journey will take you here, and early on in its campaign as well! World 2: night golfing! Blossom and fireflies! No need to worry about lost balls.

No need to worry about much of anything. A Little Golf Journey is ease itself. Across its neat, low-poly landscapes, you play a streamlined game of golf that still manages to capture the game's precise pleasures and ASMR detailing. Move a little cursor around to direct your shot. Hold a trigger to stretch the shot further, but be aware that there will be more sway, more of a game of probabilities, to where the shot lands. Hold another trigger to steady your heart and battle the sway. Shoot! The rest is all detailing - move the camera about, reverse the camera - very useful this - so you can shoot from the perspective of where you want the ball to land. Knock the ball in the hole as economically as you can, and earn a bunch of stars for your performance.

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop’s Official Trailer Recreates Some Iconic Scenes from the Anime

2 years 6 months ago

Announced back in 2017, we’re finally getting closer to the official release date of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, the beloved 1998 anime series. We’ve already seen some production photos, a recreation of the iconic opening sequence, and a teaser trailer, but this new official trailer gives us a better idea of the tone that the series is going for.

You can check out the trailer for yourself down below:

From what we’ve seen so far, the series definitely looks primed to stay extremely faithful to the source material, with a few adjustments here and there. For instance, it seems as though Faye will be showing up much earlier in the story as it looks like she’ll have a big part to play in the Ein episode.

We also get a glimpse at the series’ take on some of the most iconic shots from the anime, like Spike’s first encounter with Vicious in the cathedral, and his conversation with Ana in her store. With composer Yoko Kanno on the team as well, things are definitely looking promising.

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop is set to premiere on Netflix on Nov. 19.

Pikmin Bloom, Niantic’s Newest Mobile Game, Wants to Make Walking More Fun

2 years 6 months ago

Pikmin Bloom is the next mobile game coming from a collaboration between Nintendo and Niantic, the latter of which is best known for creating augmented reality games such as Pokemon GO and Ingress. The game was briefly teased back in March, and now we have a full reveal and release information.

The premise of Pikmin Bloom is to make walking more fun with the help of the little plant-like creatures from the Pikmin series. You’ll be able to grow, pluck, and gain friendship with Pikmin friends during your day when walking.

By feeding your Pikmin nectar, you’ll be able to plant flowers along paths on your map, which is set to your actual location just like in Niantic’s other mobile games. Other players will be able to see the flowers you’ve planted in Pikmin Bloom and vice versa, so it won’t be long until a full garden has bloomed.

You’ll also be able to take photos of the places you discovered featuring the Pikmin friends using augmented reality in order to create lasting memories.

At the end of a long day, you can look back at the paths you walked and save your favorite pictures. While at home, you can send Pikmin out on expeditions to pick up fruit and seedlings. There will even be real-world places on your map covered in clouds that you may not have explored yet, encouraging you to visit new areas.

Pikmin Bloom will begin rolling out on iOS and Android mobile devices beginning today and will fully launch worldwide over the next few days.

Pikmin Bloom Is Niantic's Latest Collaboration With Nintendo, Coming to iOS and Android This Week

2 years 6 months ago

Pikmin Bloom is the newest collaboration between Nintendo and AR developer Niantic, and in the coming days, it will soon be available to download on both iOS and Android.

Like Pokemon Go, Pikmin Bloom combines elements from the beloved Nintendo franchise with embracing the outdoors. Players can grow Pikmin by walking around and getting steps in, but that’s only half the experience.

Once you finish your daily walk and keep growing Pikmin, you’ll soon be able to pluck them and have them gather more materials for you to keep playing. As with Niantic’s other AR games, there is an interactive map based on your real-life location.

As you walk, the flowers will bloom along your path making the actual walking a more important part of Pikmin Bloom. As you take your Pikmin crew on your treks, your map will bloom with the flowers you plant with each step.

In this regard, Pikmin Bloom is almost closer to a fitness tracker than a game and that seems to be the desired goal.

Niantic is planning monthly Community Day events to encourage community walks, but with Pikmin Bloom, the goal isn’t so much collecting as it is getting you out-and-about. You’ll also be able to take pictures with your Pikmin and create a journal of all the places you’ve been.

Pikmin Bloom is the first new game Niantic developed in collaboration with Nintendo. The two companies have announced plans to work together more on Nintendo franchises going forward so expect to see more from the two companies in the future.

Far Cry 6's Messages From El Presidente Are Spurring Debate Among Fans And Critics

2 years 6 months ago

With so many games constantly fighting for our attention and playtime, Ubisoft is turning to an interesting marketing strategy to get gamers to boot up Far Cry 6. Players who haven't jumped into Yara for a while are getting emails from Ubisoft trying to get them back into the game. What's more, these emails are presented as if they're messages directly from Giancarlo Esposito's El Presidente character, aggressively taunting players to jump back in to take him down.

A tweet from journalist Brendan Sinclair detailed the types of emails Ubisoft is sending out. One email from Ubisoft had "You disappoint me" in the subject line and "It was amusing watching you fail" in the actual body of the email. The email is supposed to read as if El Presidente, the main villain in Far Cry 6, is personally mocking players for leaving the game so soon. Later on in the email, it says, "Surely you can do better than this", along with the user's Far Cry 6 playtime.

However, Ubisoft isn't just sending out emails to lapsed players. The company is also sending progress reports to people who have put some solid playtime into Far Cry 6.

Microsoft Expects Strong Xbox Engagement in The Holiday Quarter After Record Summer

2 years 6 months ago

Microsoft hosted its quarterly financial conference call for investors and analysts and chief executive officer Satya Nadella and chief financial officer Amy Hood talked about the Xbox business.

Nadella boasted record monetization and engagement during the past quarter (between July and September) compared to past first-quarter data.

He also mentioned that Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem continues to attract new gamers and retain those it gained during the past year and a half.

“We continue to attract new gamers and retain those we have gained over the past year and a half. We saw record first-quarter monetization and engagement.

This Holiday season we’ll bring our greatest lineup of content and exclusive games ever with three new AAA titles including Halo Infinite available via Game Pass subscription service which continues to offer the best value in gaming.

We’re also bringing Xcloud gaming to consoles for the first time, enabling Xbox users to discover the stream and stream more than a hundred games with just a click.

Cloud gaming is now available in 25 countries including as of this quarter Australia, Brasil, Mexico, and Japan. We’re expanding our opportunity with independent creators as well as top studios. Updates to Azure Play Fab make it easy for developers to integrate the creative marketplace in games they build.

Leading publishers from Bungie to Krafton are all relying on our cloud to scale and upgrade their games.”

Hood then mentioned that Microsoft was able to ship more Xbox Series X and S than expected during the past quarter.

Xbox Series X|S Sales Drive Another Record First Quarter for Microsoft's Gaming Segment

2 years 6 months ago

It's another record quarter for Microsoft's gaming segment, mostly because it is, unsurprisingly, selling a lot of expensive consoles to people.

Microsoft has reported its earnings for Q1 of fiscal year 2022, and buried among the many non-gaming numbers is a note that its gaming revenue for the quarter was up $501 million — or 16% — from the same period last year. Checking out the prior year's paperwork and doing some math puts last year's Q1 at around $3.1 billion, and this year's Q1 at $3.6 billion, a number that appears to be a new record in revenue for Microsoft's gaming division.

These gains are by and large driven by lots and lots of Xbox hardware sales, which were up 166% from the same quarter last year. Keep in mind that last year's Q1, while also a record quarter, was largely software and Game Pass-driven. Microsoft wasn't selling a lot of consoles then because the Xbox Series S and X weren't out yet, and in expectation of their release, no one was buying the less expensive Xbox Ones.

Meanwhile, its Xbox content and services revenue was nearly flat, up only 2% from last quarter thanks to a balance of more first-party game sales and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions (Microsoft sadly did not share exact numbers) and fewer third-party game sales. While this sounds unimpressive, last year's content sales were through the roof due to COVID-19 lockdowns, so their maintenance into 2021 as the world has reopened is notable.

Next year's BlizzConline on "pause" as Activision Blizzard looks to "reimagine" event

Blizzard - which remains embroiled in a messy legal battle following the State of California's lawsuit alleging sexual discrimination, harassment, and a "frat boy" culture at the company - has announced it will "pause" next year's BlizzConline as it looks to "reimagine" the event.

BlizzConline - which debuted this February as a digital-only replacement for Blizzard's annual BlizzCon live event in response to the coronavirus pandemic - was due to return "early" in 2022 after the company opted to cancel BlizzCon for a second year running back in May.
