Lo-fi horror and the allure of an uncanny Bitsy

2 years 6 months ago

A glitched out corner, textures too-smooth in some places and too-rough in others. Play some distorted audio, and add some film grain. That’s lo-fi horror, baby, and the lo-fi games that fit this brief can prey on the valley between the uncanny and the unknown. It’s no secret that the unknown is the scariest part of any horror media. Well, aside from that clown with extremely sharp and pointy teeth - but that’s a kind of unknown. Like... Who’s their dentist? Where’d they get that axe? You know what... I take it back. I don’t want to know that one. Let’s get back to those lo-fi videogames.

Players Report Nintendo Switch Online N64 Games Suffering from Input Lag, Frame Rate Issues

2 years 6 months ago

Some players who have upgraded their Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions to access the new Expansion Pack are upset about the performance of the service's Nintendo 64 games. Fans are reporting issues of input lag, sound delays, frame rate issues, and incorrect controller layouts.

Many issues have been collated into a ResetEra thread, which has attracted further submissions from players who are unhappy with the service. Common complaints focus on input lag; user paftree said "input lag in OoT is so bad". User nogoodnamesleft echoed this, saying "Pretty noticeable input lag and audio delay in all n64 stuff so far."

Famed Zelda: Ocarina of Time speedrunner ZFG posted his thoughts to Twitter, noting that this version is "worse" than the one featured on the WiiU's Virtual Console.

Alongside input lag, players are reporting sound effect delays and issues with music playback, as well as a strange button layout problem that reverses the placement of the A and B buttons, with no option to re-map.

Phasmophobia has added a haunted campsite map and new ghosts

2 years 6 months ago

If Halloween is best spent doing scary things with pals, Phasmophobia is one of the best games to play this Halloween. The cooperative game sends us to investigate haunted places, trying to capture evidence of ghosts without getting murdered by them. And now it's even more Halloween-y (well, technically Friday The 13th-y) thanks to a big new early access update, which has added a new map set in a haunted campground, new types of ghost, and new spooky weather. Great, just what I wanted in a game I'm already too scared to play.

Fortnite 18.30 Update Adds Combat Pistol, Icy Grappler & Salvaged B.R.U.T.E Donation Boards

2 years 6 months ago

The Fortnite 18.30 update has just released today, adding into two new weapons into the game, as well as adding the Salvaged B.R.U.T.E into the game, to be funded via the donation boards across the map.

The news comes via popular Fortnite leaker iFireMonkey on Twitter, who revealed the new weapons with their stats. The Icy Grappler simply has the description: ‘Stick, move, and SLIDE,’ suggesting you’re going to be able to slide around when using the item. Exactly how this will work remains to be seen.

Alongside the new variant of the grappler, Fortnite 18.30 also reintroduced the Combat Pistol into the mix. The in-game description reads: ‘Semi-automatic pistol that benefits greatly from aiming down sights.’

It comes in Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Legendary rarities, starting with a damage stat of 23 and going right the way up to 28 damage per shot. Magazine size remains at 15 across all variants, as does the fire rate at 6.75. The reload times is reduced from 1.54 on the Common Variant down to 1.26 on the Legendary.

Back 4 Blood review - weird but wonderfully moreish horde shooter

2 years 6 months ago

For a good chunk of my initial time with Back 4 Blood I had precisely zero opinions about it. It's a strange game, half of it built on a kind of ultra-nostalgia, especially potent for anyone who spent a single day of the late noughties in the same room as an Xbox 360. The other half - all cards, progression, loot - is quite abruptly modern. The two, at least at first, seem to cancel each other out, turning it into a thing that's just too familiar, too recognisable. I'm shooting zombies in co-op, while looting weapons and grinding the progression system for cards that might help on my next run. Imagine, in the most emotionless voice: OK.

But, actually, thankfully, it's more than that. Scrabbling around in the game's oddly enticing dark for long enough has allowed me to admit I was very much wrong. Back 4 Blood is interesting. It is unfamiliar, in places. It is good! Really good.

Valve can't keep sales secret. Every year, the big dates leak well in advance, whether whispered by devs or blasted by PayPal newsletters. This year, Valve are apparently content to say them in public where anyone might here. Hey, it's just a sale, why the secrecy? So yup, we now definitely know dates for the Steam Halloween Sale, the Steam Autumn Sale, and the Steam Winter Sale.

Best LAPA loadout in Warzone Season 6

2 years 6 months ago

Looking for the best LAPA loadout in Warzone Season 6? Treyarch and Raven Software are sending Cold War out with a bang, adding a series of unusual, interesting weapons in the final seasons. The LAPA SMG is the latest, and one of the most intriguing yet. Several of its barrel attachments alter the LAPA’s damage and fire rate. That variety makes the LAPA a very fun gun to customize and play around with. Of course, there is always a best configuration. Once you’ve had your fun and are ready to sweat, we’re here to help.

The LAPA’s range isn’t great, but up close it has monstrous potential. Its high neck and head multipliers make for a skill-dependant weapon, but in the right hands, with the right build, the LAPA fries. Here’s our build of choice:

As usual, we’re starting off with an Agency Suppressor. Added range and bullet velocity on a suppressor remain nigh-impossible to pass up. As long as you’re using a Cold War weapon, you’ll want this attachment. Things get interesting with the barrel. We’ve gone with the Rifled Barrel, which provides the most consistent damage profile. The LAPA very much relies on chest, neck, and headshots, but the Rifled Barrel helps even out the damage to the stomach and limbs. All of the barrels are frankly pretty close in power though, so try a few and see what feels right.

Retro Point & Click Adventure, Unusual Findings, Is Like Stranger Things Meets Monkey Island

2 years 6 months ago

With the tidal wave of 80s-inspired nostalgia right now, it’s safe to say that retro is well and truly back in fashion. From TV shows like Stranger Things and Cobra Kai to movies like Drive and Donnie Darko, the eighties seem to give us a bunch of warm, fuzzy feelings inside. With that in mind, we may have discovered a bodacious point-and-click adventure that could scratch that specific, aforementioned itch: Epic Llama‘s Unusual Findings.

Specifically, the title is set to launch on PC (via Steam) later this fall. However, the Argentina-based developer has now announced its Kickstarter stretch goals, which include Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series S/X and Playstation 4 and 5 versions of the game.

Accompanying the news is a freshly cut trailer, which you can check out down below:

Off-Topic: Weird futures in Vermilion Sands

2 years 6 months ago

In the morning, his lawn is covered with poems, which take the form of ribbon and coloured streamers. His neighbor is a poet, so that narrows things down a bit. Inevitably, he goes to complain.

I've been reading Vermilion Sands this past week, a collection of short stories by JG Ballard that are all based in a fictitious desert holiday community - Palm Springs or the scorched armpits of Arizona - at some point in the nebulous future. It's a short book but I'm eking it out. I don't want it to end. I knew I was going to love it - there's Ballard, of course, but it's also hard not feel something for a paperback that comes with its own 3D glasses for viewing the fractal depths of the cover art.

Phasmophobia Gets a Big Halloween Update With a New Map, New Ghosts, Nightmare Difficulty & More

2 years 6 months ago

Phasmophobia really is the gift that keeps on giving. While the game is still in early access, Kinetic Games certainly hasn’t lost any momentum in terms of providing free content updates that help expand its universe even further. A new update has been pushed out for the game just in time for Halloween, and it comes with plenty of new features and some system reworks.

First off, a new medium-sized map called the Maple Lodge Campsite has been added to the rotation, and it comes with more visual detail and higher object density, according to the patch notes. Kinetic Games also states that other locations will also receive more detail and unique objects in the future.

The Nightmare difficulty mode has also been added to the game, which should give seasoned players more of a challenge. Here are the details:

  • Ghosts will not reveal one type of evidence
  • The ghost will sometimes change its preferred room after moving
  • No setup time
  • Shortest hunt grace period
  • Long hunt duration
  • Kills extend the current hunt’s duration
  • Sanity pills restore much less sanity
  • Fuse box starts off
  • Almost no hiding places
  • Paranormal interference has damaged some of your monitoring equipment

Finally, new ghost types have been added. They are the Onryo, the Twins, the Obake, and Raiju, which are more likely to spawn during the Halloween event. A weather system has also been implemented, which can make it even harder for players to track down the ghost or determine its type. You can read the full patch notes here.

Phasmophobia is now available on PC.

Lena Raine’s Relaxing Moonglow Bay Soundtrack Now Available for Streaming & Purchase

2 years 6 months ago

Developed by Bunnyhug and published by Coatsink Games, Moonglow Bay is billed as a chill, slice-of-life fishing sim that’s meant to provide a relaxing gameplay experience for players. It makes use of voxel graphics, evoking a cute and lighthearted vibe. And, of course, there’s an incredibly cozy and relaxing soundtrack to go with it as well.

The soundtrack is composed by Lena Raine, who also worked on the music for other popular indie games like the much-beloved Celeste and Chicory: A Colorful Tale, which released earlier this year. As you might expect, the music completely fits the tone of Moonglow Bay, opting for casual guitar strums and light percussion to go with your extended fishing sessions.

To coincide with the game’s release, the soundtrack is now available for purchase on Bandcamp, and it can also be streamed via Spotify and Apple Music.

Sony Is Reportedly 'Happy' With Sales Numbers For Kena: Bridge of Spirits

2 years 6 months ago

Mike and Josh Grier from Ember Lab have revealed that Sony is happy with the sales numbers of Kena: Bridge of Spirits and that the game has already recouped its initial development costs.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the Grier brothers didn't provide a sales number, but they noted that they were pleasantly surprised at the sales so far. "It’s hard to tell what's a huge success. Sony's happy," said Josh Grier. Mike Grier also mentioned that Sony put plenty of effort into marketing Kena: Bridge of Spirits because of the large amount of attention it was getting. It was revealed alongside the PlayStation 5 back in June 2020.

At game conferences, Ember Lab pitched earlier versions of the game. While there were lots of big publishers interested, the studio eventually closed a deal with Sony for both funding and marketing support. Additionally, Ember Lab was allowed to learn about the PS5 a year prior to its official announcement and was given development kits for the console.
