Dying Light isn't available on Switch's eShop in the UK because it's banned in Germany

2 years 6 months ago

Players hoping to get stuck into Techland's impressive Switch port of Dying Light have run into a pretty significant hurdle while trying to purchase the zombies-and-parkour shooter from Nintendo's eShop; the digital version is currently unavailable in the UK and across Europe as a result of Dying Light being banned from sale in Germany.

Switch players began flagging Dying Light: Platinum Edition's unexpected absence from eShop in multiple territories, despite its 19th October release date, over on Reddit. The mystery was eventually solved by an official Techland spokesperson, who explained the issue stems from the fact Nintendo's European eShop is registered in Germany - a country where Dying Light is unrated and thus prohibited from sale.

Don’t Expect Xbox VR As Microsoft’s Phil Spencer Says Xbox Is “Focused On Software”

2 years 6 months ago

Virtual reality is an ever-growing platform that enables people to play games in new ways. It brings us experiences we wouldn’t be able to experience otherwise, such as playing through Valve's Half-Life: Alyx, and it gives us new ways to play old classics, like Resident Evil 4 VR on the Oculus Quest 2

While virtual reality continues to expand in the gaming space, it’s nowhere near as popular as traditional video game console experiences, and it’ll likely remain that way for now. That’s why Xbox is remaining committed to software, rather than hardware such as virtual reality, this generation, according to Xbox head Phil Spencer.

Xbox Game Pass Continues To Grow, But Not As Fast As Microsoft Expected

2 years 6 months ago

Xbox Game Pass continues to grow, with a new estimate putting the subscriber count at 20 million as of June. Microsoft disclosed in a financial document that Xbox Game Pass subscribers grew by 37% in the 12 months ended June 30. The target was 48% growth, so Microsoft did not deliver on expectations as it related to Game Pass.

According to analyst Daniel Ahmad, 37% growth would put Game Pass subscribers at 20 million-plus as of June 30, a figure that has surely grown since then.

Microsoft revealed this as part of a disclosure regarding executive pay. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's pay is based in part on Xbox Game Pass subscriber growth.

The last official Game Pass subscriber number that Microsoft released was 18 million back in January. Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick estimated that Game Pass might have 30 million members now, but Microsoft won't discuss Game Pass numbers in terms of raw data, at least not yet.

Microsoft will announce its full earnings report on October 26, and we might get a new hard number on Game Pass subscribers then. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Is Another Case of Nintendo Stopping Support Too Soon

2 years 6 months ago

While Animal Crossing: New Horizons may be getting a massive version 2.0 update and paid DLC in the form of Happy Home Paradise, Nintendo has also announced that these additions will be the last major content updates for the game that has sold over 33 million copies since it launched in March 2020.

In an era where season passes and battle passes and DLC are the norm, why does Nintendo continue to leave behind some of its most successful games, which could live on as live-service games? And even if “live service” is a step too far, Nintendo could still be finding ways to keep its biggest games supported in an era when launch day is hardly ever the last day most games see updates.

While Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn’t the only Nintendo game that could benefit from sustained post-launch support, the seemingly abrupt end to its major updates is perhaps the best example of the opportunities Nintendo is missing out on. Animal Crossing has all the makings of other continually updated games like Destiny, Fortnite, Final Fantasy XIV, and Call of Duty: Warzone. When it’s October 14 in our world, it is October 14 on your AC island (unless you've changed your clock). Things are constantly changing - seasons, weather, items, holidays, etc. - which means there consistently can be something new to find.

2 years 6 months ago

The elevator pitch for Cassette Beasts, a forthcoming indie game, can’t fit on a single line. A lo-fi monster-hunting game clearly inspired by Pokémon? Or, oh, oh, how about a top-down role-playing game with gorgeous pixel art and killer music? Surely it’s something distinguished by being awash in ‘80s vibes? The…

Apple Considered A Cloud Gaming Service Alongside Apple Arcade, Report Says

2 years 6 months ago

Apple had apparently considered launching a cloud gaming service alongside its own gaming platform, Apple Arcade. It appears that Apple has dropped those plans.

In the post-game Q&A section of Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter for Bloomberg (the story is behind a paywall), one of his readers asked about whether Apple had plans for a cloud gaming service. He was told, "The company in the past has internally discussed the prospects of launching such a service."

Gurman said that Apple had a unique position in the games space by relying on titles that could run on native devices as opposed to streaming from the cloud. Cloud-based gaming offers a wider selection of games and creates an "open buffet" Netflix-style experience, rather than the more carefully curated selection that Apple Arcade has.

This is how Apple separates itself from other players such as Nvidia's GeForce and Google Stadia. However, Apple doesn't allow its competitors to join Apple Arcade through the App Store. "The company says that’s not because they’re competitors, but simply because it doesn’t allow all-you-can-eat cloud gaming services on its devices," explained Gurman.

Right now, Apple Arcade has some notable titles such as Mistwalker's Fantasian and Platinum Games' World of Demons. Recently, Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls returned to mobile devices as an Apple Arcade exclusive after being delisted from other storefronts for a year.

Top 10 Roguelikes To Play Right Now

2 years 6 months ago

Roguelikes have come a long way since Rogue, and the original tentpole facets such as permadeath and randomized dungeons tweaked and altered to create new iterations on the concept. Today, many roguelikes are instead roguelites, meaning they offer the player some or a lot of permanent progression elements at various levels to ensure that the experience can be completed by dedicated players.

Some games, like Returnal, obfuscate the development to kick up the tension factor while still offering powerful permanent progression boosts, while others like Rogue Legacy offer massive, easy-to-grasp power-ups. Any way you look at it, the variable hooks from run to run in the roguelike make them fascinating to play and experience, tinkering around with different builds and options over many hours. What roguelike should you play today? Let’s take a look at some of the best listed in no particular order.

Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp Microtransaction Pricing Clarified; Series Has Shipped 5 Million Units

2 years 6 months ago

Today Spike Chunsoft reached out with a press release to provide more details and images of Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp and an update on sales for the series.

First of all, the press release answers a question many have been asking themselves about the pricing for the optional microtransactions.

Here’s how it’ll work.

Players can obtain all content such as characters, character upgrade cards, and items just by collecting and spending in-game coins. For example, if a player wants a specific character card, they can gather Monocoins and use them on the MonoMono Machines for a chance to win that card. Players can rest assured that they will not receive duplicate Character cards and Hype cards from machines. In addition to this, players cannot exchange real-world money for in-game Monocoins.

Let’s say a player really wants a swimsuit Nagito card, but doesn’t have a lot of time to play. They could visit the Nintendo eShop and purchase a “1 card” DLC. Using this DLC allows them to get the rare Nagito card without leaving it to luck. Here’s how it works: at the School Store, there will be an option to visit the Nintendo eShop to purchase a DLC. This DLC will allow the player to select any prize the player wishes from any machine, effectively removing the random chance element.

The prices of the DLCs are listed below:
1 card = $0.99
3 cards = $1.99
5 cards = $2.99
3 cards (can only buy this once) = $0.99

We also learn that the four games of the series have surpassed 5 million units shipped as of September 2021. Interestingly, a high percentage of sales from outside of Japan and on PC, with the platform accounting for approximately 3 million units sold. The PC versions of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair have exceeded one million units each.
