Best Subnautica mods

2 years 5 months ago

Subnautica was a game I spent a lot of time just living in. It was a rare combination of survival and relaxation. I loved the base building, crafting what amounted to a reverse aquarium clinging to an underwater sea cliff. It grew from a small bulb of oxygen into a proper little sanctuary. When I picked it up, it was fairly late into its life, and a number of mods were already waiting to be installed. I quickly dialed down the game’s frustrations and made my time under the sea all the more enjoyable, so here are our picks for the best Subnautica mods available today.

Xbox Boss Responds To Report That Rare's Everwild Was Rebooted, Explains What's Going On

2 years 5 months ago

Earlier this year it was reported that Sea of Thieves developer Rare had rebooted its new IP, Everwild, and now Xbox Studios boss Matt Booty has shed some additional light on what's going on. Speaking to Kinda Funny, Booty said there is no cause for concern. He said game development is a highly iterative process with many moving pieces, and it's natural that Rare's creative teams would change things up as part of the development process.

"What is Rare known for? They're known for creating new IP and creating worlds. And I'll say, when you look at it from the outside and you hear words like 'reset' and 'restructure,' those are probably a little more definite and a little more extreme than what really happens as a game comes to life," Booty said.

Rare is focused on making Everwild the best game it can be, and if that means going through some changes, that's part of the creative process, Booty said.

"They're just trying to make sure that they've got something special. We've shown a glimpse of a world, you've seen the art style that the team has got, but we want to get it right," he said.

Booty went on to say that people might be surprised how much of a rollercoaster experience game development can be. If you were a fly on the wall and watched a team make a game, you might be shocked one day and wonder how the game might ever come together, and on the next day you could be overjoyed by how it's shaping up, Booty said.

That said, Booty said he understands people are eager to see more of Everwild and learn about what type of game it is and what it's all about, and he hopes to be able to share more when Rare is ready.

The news comes via a Tweet from the game’s official channel:

Vampyr’s technical performance wasn’t its best attribute when it was first released, and the improvements should make a massive difference to the smoothness of its gameplay and the overall visual fidelity. Here’s the full overview of resolution/performance improvements by platform:

Enhanced Graphics Update:

  • PS5: 1440p / 60 FPS
  • PS4 Pro: 1440p / 30FPS
  • XSX: 1440p / 60 FPS
  • XSS: 1440p / 30FPS
  • Xbox One X: 1296p 30 FPS

Twinfinite reviewed Vampyr following its original launch and was really impressed, scoring the game 4/5 and concluding:

“Ultimately, the sum of Vampyr’s emphasis on story, combat, and progression combine to produce a video gaming experience that will appeal to those outside the RPG and adventure genres that it seeks to combine.”

Now, how about that sequel, Dontnod!

Cyberpunk 2077 And The Witcher 3 PS5 And Xbox Series Versions Arrive In 2022

2 years 5 months ago

CD Projekt Red has announced that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Cyberpunk 2077 will release in Q1 2022, followed by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's in Q2 2022. They had previously been planned for launch near the end of 2021, which itself would have been roughly a year after the games initially launched on last-gen consoles and PC.

Last month, the company's earnings report indicated that the target dates for the new versions of both games were "late 2021." On an earnings call, CD Projekt's Michael Nowakowski mentioned that the date could slip into 2022.

These PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions will leverage horsepower afforded by the new hardware, making them look and, presumably, run better than the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Details on specific enhancements or reduced load times have not yet been shared. Additionally, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will come with all previously released expansions, along with some new content inspired by the Netflix TV adaptation.

Those who already own the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 are eligible for a free upgrade to the new versions when they launch. Certain upgrades are available on the newer systems now, though the game is not a bespoke version made for them.

WD Blue SN570 review: The best cheap SSD grows up

2 years 5 months ago

There was a time, not so long ago, when the WD Blue line exemplified that “good but boring” quality that sees many a budget SSD damned by faint praise. Fast enough yet rarely eye-catchingly rapid, even when the WD Blue SN500 ditched SATA for the much quicker NVMe interface, they’ve always been sensible purchases that nonetheless lived in the shadow of the WD Black lineup. That all changes with the latest WD Blue SN570: it’s not just an excellent M.2 drive for the money, but quite possibly the single most compelling SSD for anyone sticking with PCIe 3.0.

When Does Battlefield 2042 Unlock?

2 years 5 months ago

Battlefield 2042 suffered a small delay but will finally be arriving on November 19 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC. The multiplayer-only game is sure to get a big audience trying out its various modes right away, but when exactly can you start playing? Well, some history should give us a pretty good idea of that.

Battlefield 2042 Unlock Time

Thus far, EA and DICE have not shared the exact release timing for Battlefield 2042, and we have reached out to the publisher regarding the unlock time. However, if past EA releases are anything to go by, you can expect the game to launch at 9 PM on November 18, which is midnight ET on November 19. Should this change, we will update this post to address this.

It's worth noting that this date only applies to the standard version. If you have an EA Play membership, you can play a 10-hour trial beginning a full week earlier, and this is unlimited access at the same time with an EA Play Pro membership. You can also purchase the Gold Edition or the Ultimate Edition to get the game a week earlier, as well, though you'll be spending significantly more money.

Battlefield 2042 will be the first mainline game in the series since Battlefield 2 to not include a campaign. However, it will support both cross-play and cross-progression, albeit with some limitations. If you are on a last-gen system, you will only be able to play with other last-gen players, while those on PC and current-gen systems will be grouped together.

The Best Fortnite Wraps So Far - Our Favorite Weapon Skins

2 years 5 months ago

Fortnite wraps, or weapon skins, can enhance an already excellent weapon and turn it into an art piece. Like the best character outfits and other accessories in the game, the best Fortnite wraps are a matter of opinion, but having seen them all and used many of them ourselves, we tend to skew in favor of the really elaborate or iconic wraps. Here are our picks for Fortnite's best wraps.

Sap

With this wrap, I am Groot.

Sap is the instantly recognizable wrap that came with Groot during the all-Marvel Chapter 2, Season 4. But even if you're not a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot's wrap is great because it reimagines any of your metallic firearms as something resembling a wooden carving.

Cozy Holidays

Keep the change, ya filthy animal.

Cozy Holidays is best used during the winter when Christmas is near, but when that time is right, it's the best Christmas wrap released so far. It perfectly captures the look of a wrapped present, which is exactly what you intend to deliver to your opponents, right? Jingle all the way to victory.

Evercade Handheld Review

2 years 5 months ago

For retro enthusiasts, finding legitimate modern ways to experience games from 40 or more years ago can be a daunting task. Sure, most of the popular ones have been repackaged and released in various collections or mini consoles throughout the years, but what about some of the more obscure titles that nobody seems to remember?

Blaze Entertainment heard those pleas, and while its Evercade platform offers a vast library of titles spanning decades of arcade and home consoles to collect and play, the handheld itself leaves much to be desired.

Evercade Handheld – Design and Features

Right off the bat, the Evercade has a distinct retro aesthetic that’s oozing with ‘70s and ‘80s vibes. It features an off-white exterior with striking red trim and grey accents. The face has a glass-like plastic finish and it’s all tied together with smooth, rounded edges. It includes four face buttons as well as start and select on the right side of the screen with a rocker-style D-pad and menu button on the opposite side. All the buttons feel great to press with the D-pad specifically “designed to feel like classic consoles.”

God Of War PC Version Is Coming In January

2 years 5 months ago

2018's God of War is headed to PC in January. The game will release on January 14 through Steam, Sony has announced. It follows several of the company's other high-profile PlayStation exclusives eventually releasing on the platform.

"Our primary goal when bringing God of War to PC was to highlight the exceptional content the team created and leverage the powerful hardware that the platform offers to create a uniquely breathtaking and high-performance version of the game," Sony Santa Monica's Grace Orlady said. God of War for PC includes a "wide range of graphical presets." Players with a strong enough PC can expect better resolution shadows and upgraded screen space reflections. There is also support for ambient occlusion through GTAO and SSDO.

God of War for PC will feature support for 21:9 ultra-wide screens, too, along with keyboard mapping and "robust controller support" for the DualShock, DualSense, and other supported gamepads.

Destiny 2: Witch Queen's New Dungeons Won't be Included in the Standard Edition or Season Pass

2 years 5 months ago

Bungie has angered fans by announcing that new dungeons coming with the upcoming Witch Queen expansion will only be available as standalone purchases, or as part of Deluxe Editions.

As explained by community manager Cozmo23 on Reddit, standard edition copies of The Witch Queen and Year 5 season passes will not include the three new dungeons coming down the line. Instead, two dungeons will be part of the Digital Deluxe edition ($79.99 USD / £69.99), with a third dungeon coming alongside the Digital Deluxe + Bungie's 30th Anniversary Bundle ($99.99 USD / £87.99).

The dungeons will also be made available as standalone purchases. "We will also be offering a separate way for you to purchase the Dungeons in the future," explained Cozmo23, "but they will not be included in the Season passes."

Destiny 2 hasn't parcelled out its dungeons in this way previously, previously including them as part of expansion releases or as free updates. Bungie might argue that releasing three dungeons in close proximity – Destiny 2 has previously had only three other new dungeons in its lifetime – requires a different approach to release, but fans aren't pleased with the news.

The zombies in Back 4 Blood are more fashionable than me

2 years 5 months ago

I don't know what I was expecting to take away from co-op FPS Back 4 Blood. A greater sense of comradery between myself and my friends? An appreciation of the weighty guns and how magazines snap into place with each reload? The sheer amount of blood that splashes on your person with each wave of zombies you cut down? Yes, all of these things.

But none more so than what the zombies wear. They favour comfortable clothing, but mainly the gilet. They love gilets. And they now have me questioning my fashion choices. Should I also join them as a wearer of gilets?

Xbox Studios Boss Admits Lagging Behind Sony In Terms Of Big Tentpole Games

2 years 5 months ago

Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty has discussed Microsoft's efforts to compete with Sony in terms of first-party games, acknowledging that Xbox has "not been out in front" when it comes big tentpole games like Sony is known for. Speaking to Kinda Funny, Booty praised Sony for what it has been able to achieve, going on to say Microsoft hopes to deliver more of those types of games in the future.

"Hats off to Sony, their studio system, and the leaders that they've got there, it's fantastic--you can't argue with the quality and the craft and the games that they delivered and that they're working on now. Kudos and hats off to them," he said. "I think there is a certain kind of game that generates an anticipation; it becomes this tentpole moment. It's a game that fits that intersection of everybody can play and it's a big world you can inhabit. I think those kind of games are important. And certainly, it's been a place where we have not been out in front. We haven't really had the sort of 1:1 with Sony."

Booty said he didn't want to get drawn into discussing what Microsoft's response to Sony's Uncharted or Horizon game might be, if it even is making projects like that. But overall, Booty said Microsoft is keen to create the types of games that Sony is known for.

"I don't necessarily want to get into, 'What's our Uncharted? 'What's our Horizon: Zero Dawn?' 'What's our this, what's our that?' I don't think that does anybody any good," Booty said. "What are those games that have universal themes, that have a big world that people want to get lost in, that have really well-realized characters, and really high production values? That is absolutely what we want to go after."
