Xbox Solidifies Its First-Party Holiday Lineup

2 years 6 months ago

Moving into the holiday shopping season, Microsoft has solidified its list of big first-party releases. In a blog this morning, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty shared what he’s calling “three epic months of back-to-back blockbuster game launches in Game Pass.”

First on Booty’s list is the impending release of Age of Empires 4, the long-awaited new installment to the historical real-time strategy franchise. That’s due out on PC Game Pass and Steam on October 28. Continuing the PC news, a few days later will be the addition of Minecraft to PC Game Pass on November 2. You read that right, Minecraft hasn’t been a part of Game Pass outside of consoles yet, but those who don’t own the adventure/creation juggernaut can download it in a few short weeks. Additional Minecraft Dungeons content and the Caves and Cliff: Part II update for Minecraft will be dropping sometime later in the year.

Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition Arriving as a Free Update Next Month

2 years 6 months ago

Xbox has announced that Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition will launch as a free update on November 18, adding aircraft, airports, and probably more things that have "air" in their name.

Announced on Xbox Wire, the update will be added free for all players – including those who own the game through a Game Pass subscription. The update adds five new aircraft, eight new airports, as well as extra Discovery Flights and tutorials. The update will also add DX12 support for PC versions.

The update also won't include the delayed Top Gun: Maverick expansion, which was delayed to match the movie itself, which is currently due to arrive on May 27, 2022.

Neither will it include the Reno Air Races expansion, which adds competitive racing to the game for the first time. Announced earlier this year, air races will see multiple high-speed planes added, and allow eight players to recreate the real-life event, which bills itself as the world's fastest motorsport. It will be available separately on November 18, the same day as the Game of the Year Edition.

Mysterious Pokemon Legends: Arceus Trailer Teases New Pokemon

2 years 6 months ago

Today, the Pokemon Company released a video on their official YouTube channel for the upcoming game Pokemon Legends: Arceus, but it’s not a typical trailer. Instead, we see about two minutes of video footage found in Canalave Library mimicking a researcher discovering what seems to be a new Pokemon in the Hisui region.

The video purposely looks like old, poor quality taped footage, so it’s a bit hard to make out exactly what’s happening. However, thanks to the voice acting in the video, we can tell that the researcher is scaling a snowy mountain at 7:00 pm and spots an unfamiliar Pokemon.

The researcher’s voice is unintelligible at times due to the poor quality of the film as he tries to tell what kind of Pokemon he has discovered. He first mistakes it for a Growlithe or a Vulpix, but realizes it’s something different.

The mysterious Pokemon is described as having a red tipped tail, white fur on the top of its head and a fluffy neck with round, yellow eyes. He remarks how adorable it looks before screaming in fear, and the video cuts off. The last few seconds are just totally black footage.

The Pokemon Legends: Arceus teaser video ends without revealing what the Pokemon is or what the fate of the researcher is. It could be a Hisuian version of a Pokemon we already know, or perhaps it is a brand new Pokemon altogether.

If you want to watch the teaser footage in full, you can watch it below. Let us know if your best guess at what Pokemon this could be based on how it is described and the sounds from the video.

Valorant Patch 3.08 Notes Reveal Long-Awaited Option to Revert Weapon Skin Upgrade Tiers

2 years 6 months ago

Valorant’s latest update, patch 3.08, will be released later today (tomorrow for some regions), and while it isn’t a particularly major patch it does make one or two small but notable changes. In particular, players are now able to equip whichever weapon skin tier they want, rather than being forced to keep the highest tier they have upgraded to.

Those who own the Karambit melee weapon, for example, will be especially pleased given the controversy over the upgraded pull-out animation, which was considered much less interesting than the standard one! You can now change it back.

Another new feature in today’s update that players should find positive is a change to the way reports are handled; namely, that you will now receive notifications if actions were taken based on a report that you filed.

For example, if you have reported a player for trolling or some form of abusive behavior that Riot has deemed worthy of punishment, you will now be told, which is certainly a piece of mind that it’s worth following through when games go awry.

Here are the full list of changes, which aside from the aforementioned changes, mostly comprise performance updates, quality of life improvements, and bug fixes:

Social Updates

Persistent Report Feedback

  • Your reports matter, and we want you to know that! You will now be notified if we took action on one of your reports, whether you are offline or not.
  • If your client is up and running, you’ll receive a notification. If you’re offline at the time of action, fret not! You’ll receive your notification upon your return.

Progression Updates

Doom Can Now Be Played On Twitter

2 years 6 months ago

Over the years, fans have managed to port Doom to a number of weird and wonderful places. From popping up in Minecraft to running on an Apple Watch, the game's community constantly seems to be finding new ways to play the game. In perhaps one of the more inventive methods to allow fans access the Doom universe, players are now able to complete the game on Twitter.

The creation of a Tweet2Doom bot on the social media platform now means that users can attempt to complete the game by using various commands in Twitter replies to the account. In doing so, players can control the game's iconic Doom Marine, and are able to see the consequences of their actions in short ten-second clips that the account sends back.

A full set of the rules and how to play can be found in the pinned tweet on the Tweet2Doom bot's account. However, gameplay essentially requires players to use a combination of letters and numbers to input commands to the game and then denote the number of frames that they'd like the action to be performed for. In a strange way, this almost gives the game a turn-based feel where players are able to react and plot their next series of moves after the bot responds with footage detailing their last set of actions.

Ubisoft Reportedly Developing New Splinter Cell Game

2 years 6 months ago

Ubisoft has reportedly greenlit development of a new, mainline Splinter Cell game. If the rumour proves true, it will be the first core entry in the Tom Clancy stealth series since 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

A report from VGC claims multiple "development sources" have revealed that a new Splinter Cell is in an early phase of production, with a small chance of the game being announced in 2022. The project has apparently been greenlit as part of an effort to appease frustrated Tom Clancy and Splinter Cell fans, who have been less than happy with Ubisoft's treatment of the brand over the last decade.

No further details were provided in the report, aside from the suggestion that the new Splinter Cell will be developed outside of Ubisoft's flagship Montreal studio. Ubisoft Montreal developed key Splinter Cell games, including the original, Chaos Theory, and Conviction. The most recent game, Blacklist, was developed at Ubisoft Toronto.

Monster Hunter World Has Now Shipped 20 Million Units Worldwide

2 years 6 months ago

Capcom’s Monster Hunter World continues to sell big, as today the publisher has announced the game has now shipped 20 million units worldwide. That’s up from 16 million units just over a year ago. It is Capcom’s best-selling game of all time.

The news comes via a press release, which highlights some of the factors behind the game’s continued success. It reads in part:

With the January 2018 release of Monster Hunter: World in particular, Capcom was able to propel the Monster Hunter series to global-brand status with a series-first worldwide simultaneous launch coupled with international promotional activities, establishing the game as Capcom’s best-selling title of all time within a month of its release and being honored with awards the world over. In the more than three years since the game’s release, in addition to promoting digital sales, Capcom also launched Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (Iceborne, below), a massive premium expansion for the game, as well as a bundle containing both titles, capitalizing on synergies with Iceborne and resulting in prolonged sales that led Monster Hunter: World to achieve a Capcom all-time record of 20 million units shipped.

Capcom also makes mention of Monster Hunter Rise, the Nintendo Switch exclusive that has also sold exceptionally well since its release back in March of this year. As reported the other day by Twinfinite, the game has shipped 7.5 million units.

After Legal Threat, Dbrand Just Makes Its Own PS5 Faceplate

2 years 6 months ago

Following a cease and desist letter from Sony, Canadian peripherals company Dbrand announced on Saturday that it had been forced to pull its range of PS5 faceplates from its store. Now, just three days later, the company has released its own original design range of faceplates for the console. In an announcement, Dbrand proclaimed "Darkplates are back, checkmate lawyers."

In a statement posted to the company's subreddit this weekend, Dbrand announced that its PlayStation 5 faceplates were "dead" after it had received official contact from Sony threatening legal action if Dbrand continued to sell them. Up until this point, Dbrand's faceplates were near identical to the ones typically found on the console when purchased. The key difference was, instead of being white, the company's faceplates allowed fans to switch up their consoles to a matte black design.
