Resident Evil 4 VR Review

2 years 6 months ago

After 15 hours of outmaneuvering infected villagers in VR, I have a newfound appreciation for Resident Evil 4. While the original version was my gateway into the Resident Evil series nearly 16 years ago, the moment I booted up this remake on my Oculus Quest 2, I knew Armature Studios had created something special. Resident Evil 4 was already an excellent game, but experiencing it in VR recaptured that feeling of playing it for the very first time.

The perspective has shifted, but no significant changes have been made to Resident Evil 4’s corny but easy-to-follow action-movie plot. You are still playing as Leon S. Kennedy, now a U.S. government agent in rural Europe to rescue the president’s daughter while fending off hordes of infected villagers and monsters. Sure, there are some references to earlier entries (specifically Resident Evil 2), but Resident Evil 4 was an effective entry point to the series for many people like myself because you don’t need to have played the previous games to know what’s going on.

Unlike some VR adaptations of major games, most notably L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, this is not a watered-down version of Resident Evil 4: you can experience Leon’s mission from start to finish. However, I noticed the absence of some content that is commonly found in modern re-releases of this game, most notably additional modes like Separate Ways and the Mercenaries, so it’s not technically “complete.”

Resident Evil 4 VR Does Not Include Mercenaries, Other Extra Content

2 years 6 months ago

Resident Evil 4 VR does not include unlockable modes, including the Mercenaries and Separate Ways.

In a statement sent to IGN, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed that these modes were not included in the VR version of Resident Evil 4, though did not elaborate further as to why the decision was made to cut these modes in the game. All three of these modes were available to unlock after completing Resident Evil 4's main story once.

Assignment Ada, while non-canon in the Resident Evil lore, this game mode had players controlling Ada Wong as she tries to collect samples of the plaga for Albert Wesker. The Mercenaries Mode is an arcade-style minigame with the goal is to kill enemies and rack up a high score before time runs out. Starting with Resident Evil 4's PS2 port and onwards, the game would get a third unlockable mode called SeparateWays, where you play through the entire campaign of Resident Evil 4 through Ada's perspective.

Despite the cut modes, I noted in my review of Resident Evil 4 VR that the recent re-release offers plenty of changes to gameplay and combat make it an easy recommendation for anyone that owns an Oculus Quest 2 headset.

Resident Evil 4 VR launches October 21, exclusively for the Oculus Quest 2.

Resident Evil 4 VR Review - Breathing New Life Into A Familiar Feeling

2 years 6 months ago

Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Armature Studio
Rating: Mature
Reviewed on: Quest

I'm of two minds when it comes to whether or not someone should play Resident Evil 4 VR. If you've never touched the original RE4, then by no means should you jump into this version; everything that made (and makes, for that matter) it important would completely go over your head in VR. However, if you have played Resident Evil 4 – especially if you've completed it numerous times over the years – then RE4VR should be played at all costs.

Resident Evil 4 VR Cuts Certain Content Including Voice Lines and Animations

2 years 6 months ago

Resident Evil 4 VR is a full remake of Capcom’s horror classic, except in virtual reality. But some things have been left behind in the past as Facebook confirmed certain dialogue and animations have been removed for a modern audience.

First spotted by Happy Warrior, Resident Evil 4 VR has removed certain suggestive dialogue related to Ashley Graham, the president’s daughter Leon Kennedy is tasked with rescuing. This includes a line from another character, Luis, referencing Ashley’s body.

Furthermore, you won’t be able to look up Ashley’s skirt during certain areas of the game and the corresponding animation has been removed.

In a statement to IGN from a Facebook spokesperson, they said, “Oculus Studios, Armature, and Capcom partnered closely to remaster Resident Evil 4 from the ground up for VR. This includes immersive environments and high-resolution graphics. It also includes select changes to in-game dialogue and animations that we believe will update Resident Evil 4 for a modern audience.”

Ogling Ashley isn’t really a core part of the Resident Evil 4 experience so it’s hard to say that this substantially changes the game. Though if you feel strongly this content still exists in one of the many, many other versions of Resident Evil 4.

Activision Blizzard want harassment lawsuit paused over conflict of interest

2 years 6 months ago

Activision Blizzard have filed an application to halt the harassment and discrimination lawsuit from the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). This follows an update on the suit last week, which revealed that two DFEH lawyers previously worked for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), who're also going through legal proceedings with Actiblizzard, creating a conflict of interest. Now the Call Of Duty and World Of Warcraft publishers want the DFEH's case to be paused so they can investigate, and decide whether they want to try and get the case disqualified, or find "other appropriate remedies".

Guardians of the Galaxy: Square Enix Clarifies Apparent 150GB File Size on PC

2 years 6 months ago

PC specifications for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy seemed to suggest that the game would require a huge 150GB of space to install – but Square Enix has now made clear that this isn't the final size, with approximately 80GB being the new target.

As spotted by PC Gamer, the minimum and recommended system requirements for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy were recently uploaded to its Steam Store page. While many of the necessary PC specifications needed to run the game don't seem too taxing, players were told they'd need to have 150GB of free storage space on their systems just to be able to install the game.

Many were confused by the huge size – by comparison, the imposingly massive Microsoft Flight Simulator takes up 127GB – leading Square Enix to release a statement saying this isn't the final file size:

While not confirmed, it may well be that you do need 150GB to start the installation process, but thankfully the final game is a slimmer 80GB or so. In a follow-up, the publisher made clear that PS4 and PS5 verisons should take up around 50GB.

Gloomhaven review: a loving adaptation that nails the ambition and detail of the tabletop original

2 years 6 months ago

Gloomhaven’s scoundrel has a custom animation for her flintlock pistol, and I am still jazzed about it. Releasing today in full after lurking in early access for the last two years, there are 17 classes in this digital adaptation of Cephalofair’s tabletop legacy dungeon crawler, hereafter referred to as ‘Tablehaven’. Each class, from psychic rodent Mindthief to basalt shithouse Cragheart, has around 30 ability cards each. And Flaming Fowl, alongside offering Tablehaven’s entire branching campaign, map editors, and a digi-only ‘Guildmaster’ campaign, have animated this single flintlock shot. It’s almost opulent.

All right, so I probably won’t use it much. Five damage at range four is a belter, but that burn hurts for a single target ability. I’ll be smiling when I do, though. Grinning as the scoundrel whips the silver pistol from her hip and deletes a cultist just before he summons a skeleton. Just as I’ve been grinning at these detailed, cel-shaded dungeons and grimy sewers, or the spoken narration before each quest. All Gloomhaven needed to do was not get in Tablehaven’s way too much. Accuracy and usability would have been just fine. But there’s enough passion and pizzaz in this wonderful package that a part of me wishes I was new here, just so I could be surprised all over again.

Tipping In Japan? One Company Aims To Spread It Throughout The Country

In Japan, tipping is basically not a thing. There are a few occasions where one does tip, such as at a ryokan, or a traditional Japanese inn. But generally, good service is expected minus tips. So if you go to a restaurant, the price on your bill is what you pay. One Japanese company is trying to change that.

Half-Life 2 Is Getting Its Biggest Patch In Years

2 years 6 months ago

17 years after its initial release, Valve's classic shooter Half-Life 2 is getting a fairly major update, including increased FOV, Vulkan support, and fixes for years-old bugs. The update has been quietly pushed to Half-Life 2's beta branch, which players can opt into by selecting the option in the game's properties tab through Steam.

As reported by PC Gamer, the new update was picked up by YouTuber Tyler McVicker, who calls it the largest update the game has had in at least a decade.

While the update is most likely to ensure that one of Valve's most beloved games runs smoothly on the company's upcoming Steam Deck handheld PC, some care has also gone into adapting the game for modern gaming PCs. The patch increases the FOV cap to 110, pushes a number of bug fixes that apparently have sat unaddressed for years, and includes a number of UI fixes designed to support ultrawide displays.

The new update also includes support for the Vulkan rendering API, which has better compatibility with Linux-based systems like the Steam Deck's SteamOS. Valve's Portal 2 was also updated earlier this year to support Vulkan, and it's likely other games in Valve's library will receive the same treatment thanks to the Steam Deck.

McVicker says that the beta update has some issues still, and isn't quite ready to go live yet. Still, curious players can check out the beta version right now by opting in through Steam's interface.

Someone should make a game about: Quantum Leap

2 years 6 months ago

Look, I get it. Even at the height of Quantum Leap's popularity three decades ago, turning an anthology TV series into a video game would have been a hard sell. This was a show that bravely hit the reset button every single week. In a flurry of electric blue flashes, time-travelling scientist Samuel Beckett would zap into a new body with the laudable but rather vague mission to "put right what once went wrong". Even with the probability analytics of his hologram guardian angel Al, it tended to be a painful process of trial and error. Sam would style it out while trying to deduce the win conditions that would allow him to advance. One week a blind concert pianist, the next a convict on death row. Such was the life of a cosmic samaritan.

Yet the more I think about Quantum Leap - and all five soul-nourishing seasons are, at time of writing, available to stream on Now - the more I reckon it would make for a tremendous gaming chassis. The concept of "leaping" into other people has gradually become a familiar trope, from the creepy sight jacking of Forbidden Siren to the vehicular hopscotch of Driver: San Francisco. Titles as varied as Dishonored, Beyond: Two Souls and Superhot all allow you to borrow a passer-by to achieve your next objective, while Watch Dogs: Legion made recruiting an army of remote-controlled London meatbags its main selling point.

Apex Legends Writers Tried To Do More In-Game Quests, But Couldn't

2 years 6 months ago

Apex Legends has just dropped a huge lore reveal, with its latest Stories from the Outlands introducing Ash as the game's next playable hero, while also unravelling some mysteries about who the simulacrum really is. Some fans of the series wish the story had been a playable quest in-game, however, rather than having it told across a number of comics posted to Twitter.

In a reply to a tweet expressing this disappointment, Apex Legends' narrative director Tom Casiello said that the team had attempted to integrate some of the storylines as quests, but ultimately weren't able to do it right in the amount of time allowed.

Ash, a character originally encountered in the Titanfall games, was first introduced to Apex Legends in a Season 5 story quest called The Broken Ghost, but her re-introduction as a major player in the upcoming Season 11 has been shown mostly through Twitter comics.

Casiello explained that the Apex team have come up against a number of limitations when it comes to integrating in-game story quests, including manpower, memory, and time.

How Buying a House in New World Made Me a Slave of Capitalism

2 years 6 months ago

Housing, or the idea of owning an apartment or land, is one of my favorite aspects of video games. Being a homeowner in real life is difficult, so when a video game offers me the opportunity to purchase a space that I can call my own, you can bet I’m going all in. It’s why I’m so drawn to Animal Crossing, and even Final Fantasy XIV, a game in which it’s notoriously hard to secure a plot of land for your future house.

Then New World happened. I quickly learned that buying a house in New World was much easier than in FFXIV as housing was instanced, and so I started saving. Well, I’m now the proud owner of a beautiful tier 3 house in the glorious region of Brightwood… and I couldn’t be more stressed out about my damn property taxes.

The real kicker is that this game is pretty darn sly in tempting you to purchase a house, too. I’ve already gone over this in a separate guide, but essentially, New World offers all players a 50% discount on their first house purchase. The most expensive houses in the game cost 20,000 coin, and they offer a two-hour free fast travel cooldown, more storage potential, and more furniture slots. Being able to buy the most expensive house at the cost of just 10,000 coin sounds like an absolute steal.

But be warned: there are also property taxes to consider. And it’s here that New World’s housing system starts to baffle me a little bit.

Xbox Game Pass Subscriber Growth Slowed Down This Year

2 years 6 months ago

Game Pass subscriptions have slowed in the fiscal year 2021 according to new documents released by Microsoft.

In a new financial statement, Microsoft revealed that Xbox Game Pass subscriptions rose by 37.5% falling short of its internal target of 47.8%. In contrast, last year Microsoft over-performed on its targets to grow Xbox Game Pass, increasing subscriptions by nearly 86% over a goal of 71%.

What this means is that Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass subscriptions have slowed this past year, and it’s likely a combination of factors. One of the key promises of Xbox Game Pass is that first-party titles will be available on the service day and date. So far in 2021, first-party titles have been relegated mostly to Age of Empires remasters, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Psychonauts 2.

New first-party titles like Age of Empires 4 and Halo Infinite are still months away and will deliver on Game Pass’ promise of major first-party day and date releases.

NHL 22 Review

2 years 6 months ago

Pieces of NHL 22 feel like a callback to NHL 95, which introduced the spin-o-rama. That innovation was a quick piece of showy stick play that made dodging a defender easier, at the expense of realism. Decades later, such skills now turned into X-Factors, giving certain star players special moves. Now universal across NHL, Madden NFL, and FIFA, these shatter the simulation aspects these respective sports brands were previously known for. And thus, NHL 22 finds itself conflicted. It recalls the series’ growing pains in the early ‘00s where the slapstick, arcade-style play ruled before giving way to a fealty to the real sport. Given the near-total lack of penalty calls except for the most severe infractions (even with the penalty slider cranked high), NHL 22 takes steps toward this fantastical style and yet doesn’t fully embrace it.

It should be noted that this is the first NHL game to run on the Frostbite engine – important to say because you probably wouldn’t know it otherwise. The change is almost invisible, which is something of a triumph when you consider that Madden NFL still hasn’t fully recovered technically after it made the switch four years ago. On the other hand, it doesn’t look dramatically better than NHL 21, as you’d expect for the first game designed to impress on a new generation of consoles. So in that respect, no news is good news.
