Facebook Will Reportedly Change Its Company Name to Embrace the Metaverse

2 years 6 months ago

Facebook is reportedly planning to change its name in an effort to reflect its work building the "metaverse," The Verge reports, citing a source familiar with the matter.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly plans to announce the name change at the company's Connect conference on October 28, if not sooner. The name change could signal Facebook's intentions to grow further beyond a social media company and into more of a tech conglomerate. With Facebook owning Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus VR devices, and other brands, the name change will likely organize every group under one umbrella, similar to Google's change to Alphabet in 2015.

Zuckerberg has previously commented on Facebook's intentions to expand into different technology and the metaverse. He told The Verge earlier this year that "we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”

The Verge also reports that the name is a closely guarded secret, even among Facebook's senior leadership. One theory is that it will take its name from Facebook's unreleased VR platform, Horizon Worlds, previously known as Facebook Horizons.

Masahiro Sakurai Reveals How Sora Finally Made It Into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

2 years 6 months ago

A chance meeting is part of the reason Sora from Kingdom Hearts joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as its final fighter.

In the latest Masahiro Sakurai Famitsu column, translated by @PushDustIn and @KodyNOKOLO on Twitter, the Smash director pulled back the curtain on Sora's inclusion.

According to the translation, Sakurai reiterated that getting Sora in the game was much more difficult than other fighters. However, Sakurai managed to bump into a Disney representative at an awards show, which seemed to kickstart the discussions that made Sora in Smash a reality.

Sora's inclusion was finalized later than the rest of Ultimate's DLC roster. Sakurai said Fighters Pass 2 originally only had five fighters: Min Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Pyra/Mythra, and Kazuya. Then, after long discussions between Nintendo, Square Enix, and Disney, the Fighters Pass grew to six fighters.

The 10 Best Far Cry Games

2 years 6 months ago

Far Cry 6 is the latest in Ubisoft’s open-world franchise, building on the base-clearing, first-person shooting, and definitions of insanity of the past while simultaneously introducing some smart new ideas that could help pave the way for where Far Cry goes next. For sixteen years now, this series has been known for unleashing players in massive, alluring worlds both familiar and unfamiliar across vastly different continents, time periods, and sometimes even apocalypses while giving them total freedom to cause mischief and mayhem.

That’s mostly been a winning formula, but the Far Cry franchise is as much about being experimental as it is about feeling familiar. So which are the best games in the series? Here are the top ten Far Cry games ever made.

#10 - Far Cry Instincts - 2005 (Xbox)

Far Cry Instincts is basically a remake of the original Far Cry game with some cut corners in order to let it debut on the Xbox in 2007. Issues like texture pop-in and long load times definitely showed Instincts’ age when it launched, but this redo also brought in a map editor, new feral abilities, and the addition of several multiplayer modes. Instincts is a fairly linear take on the already linear debut Far Cry game, but it’s still worth checking out to see how far the Far Cry games have come since.

Starfield Features Dangerous Space Pirates, Fanatical Zealots, And More In Its Expansive Universe

2 years 6 months ago

Starfield isn't launching for another year, but Bethesda is slowly dip-feeding new information about the universe you'll be open to explore when its latest original title does arrive.

Starfield is first and foremost about exploration, which takes place in what is known as the Settled Systems. The game, which is set in the year 2330, will see you exploring a small new area of the Milky Way that Bethesda says is around 50 light years away from Earth. Exploring the unknown didn't come without its own issues, and Starfield will be set in the wake of a war between the United Colonies and Freestar Collection, called the Colony War.

There's a shaky peace between the two factions when Starfield starts, but you'll have to navigate these two factions as well as space pirates loyal to the space-faring Crimson Fleet, fanatical religious zealots belonging to what is known as The House of Va'ruun, and more. These all fit within a mold that should be familiar if you've played other Bethesda titles, with The Elder Scrolls and Fallout each featuring factions and brotherhoods you could pledge allegiance to.

Although in Starfield, you do start as a member of one faction, called Constellation. This group is committed to uncovering the mysteries of this new solar system and the galaxies beyond, so it will be interesting to see how, or if, Starfield prioritizes this mission over the violent dangers around you.

Starfield is launching exclusively for PC and Xbox Series X|S on 11 November, 2022.

New Square Enix Studio Working on Avatar: The Last Airbender and Tomb Raider Mobile Games

2 years 6 months ago

Square Enix has announced a new studio with a focus on developing mobile games.

The studio, called Square Enix London Mobile, is currently developing games based on Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender and Tomb Raider. The Avatar game is in joint development with Navigator Games, another mobile games studio.

We don't yet know what the gameplay will look like for the Avatar game. However, Navigator Games' last project, Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, was a turn-based fantasy RPG.

The Tomb Raider title in development is called Tomb Raider Reloaded, and it was announced in November of 2020. It was originally supposed to come out this year, but Square Enix now says the game will release on the App Store and Google Play in 2022.

The game is described as an "action-arcade style adventure designed specifically for mobile." Crystal Dynamics, developer behind the modern Tomb Raider trilogy, is also working on the game.

See Tomb Raider's Canceled Horror Game Ascension In New Gameplay Video

2 years 6 months ago

As part of Tomb Raider's 25th anniversary festivities, Square Enix has released new footage and details about the canceled survival horror game Tomb Raider Ascension.

Square Enix worked on Tomb Raider Ascension for some time as part of the "exploratory phase" of development that would lead up to Crystal Dynamics' 2013 reboot. "It was through Ascension that the team homed in on telling an origin story through the lens of survival," the publisher said.

In the gameplay footage, we see Lara Croft running around various environments and fighting against otherworldly fantastical creatures, at times on horseback. The footage stems from an in-development version of the game, which is why it looks rough. It definitely shows a lot of potential, though, so it's not hard to see why some elements were retained for the reboot.

A second video shows off some of Tomb Raider Ascension's gorgeous concept art, which depicts Lara Croft in a variety of settings and environments. The artwork also depicts some of the enemies Lara would meet up with and the young girl Izumi, who would have been at Lara's side.

In a third video, Square Enix shows off some of the branding and box art mockups for Tomb Raider Ascension, which presumably would have been released on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The video also features some "early exploratory" voice over aimed at showing a different side of Lara. "I get lost. I have doubts. I know pain. I know fear," she says. "One day, I will become a legend, a warrior, a hero, a raider. But first, I will be a survivor."

Call Of Duty The Haunting Event Is A Hit For MP And A Miss For Warzone

2 years 6 months ago

Call of Duty's Haunting event is now live in Black Ops Cold War and Warzone, bringing horror-themed operators, new event challenges, and plenty of Halloween-themed modes. This holiday update really shines Cold War's multiplayer and Zombies, but Warzone suffers from a spooky mode that tries to do too much.

Starting with the good, Black Ops Cold War multiplayer gives Nuketown a temporary Halloween-themed reskin for the Haunting event. This limited-time version of Nuketown is a nighttime setting that brings out the pumpkins and spiderwebs. There are even three new limited-time modes, including a hide-and-seek mode that incorporates Ghostface from Scream.

Scream Deathmatch randomly selects two players to be Ghostface and go on a stabbing spree, while the remaining survivors are unarmed and must hide. I definitely recommend giving Scream Deathmatch a try, even players who don't normally play party games or hide-n-seek modes. I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this mode. Ghostface gets a lot of fun voice lines, and this mode feels fun whether playing the role of the killer or the hunted survivors. Ghostface doesn't have crazy speed or anything, so fleeing feels hopeful but terrifying when being pursued.

The Haunting is also an excellent event for Zombies fans. The mode gets a lot of great changes that make this limited-time version a blast to play. Some of the changes are just subtle touches like thematic music and the fact that all the enemies are wearing pumpkin heads. Even the special enemy types like the radioactive Megaton enemies and the Plaguehounds have pumpkins on their heads.

In Starfield, your character will be a new member of the Constellation, a faction with the aim of uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy. The area of space that we’ll be exploring is known as The Settled Systems, and starts with our own solar system and expands outwards by around 50 light years into the Milky Way.

Valorant Patch 3.08 is now live and includes a collection of new social and progression updates for players' accounts while also addressing several gameplay bugs that have affected maps and weapons.

The update now features a notification option that will alert players to let them know that Riot Games has taken action against their reports, whether they're offline or not, including feedback regarding the initial report.

3.08 also brings with it several account progression updates including the ability to equip any Account Level Border that has been unlocked as well as an option to hide a personal Account Level when in a match with other players. Meanwhile, an update to the in-game Valorant store now allows players to equip any skin level except on variants--which will always default to the max skin level.

As for performance changes, Riot has reduced instances where the game's UI is invalidated and have lowered the amount of times the UI needed to update itself, which will now save performance costs.

How we built a streamlined recording and streaming setup for DF Direct

2 years 6 months ago

Earlier this year, we started DF Direct Weekly - initially envisaged as a way to cover more topics and to do so in a way that wouldn't require massive production values. The obvious way to do this is via a simple Microsoft Teams or Zoom meeting - but the results just weren't good enough, not meeting quality thresholds and looking out of place on the DF YouTube channel. At the same time, we were also looking at ways to more easily deliver higher quality filmed material in a 'work from home' environment, where space is at a premium and where time is of the essence.

In addressing the filming challenges of DF Direct Weekly, we ended up creating environments that would hold up not just for the Direct but for interview and DF retro content too. Ultimately, it's all about integrating mirrorless cameras instead of webcams, while tapping into some of the best streaming hardware available. We think that some of the lessons here could be useful shortcuts for anyone that's looking to create a modern, clutter-free way of streaming or recording videos - so this is a breakdown of exactly how our final setup works, from audio and video to lights, capture and controls.
