Square Enix shows off Tomb Raider survival horror prototype made prior to 2013 reboot

2 years 6 months ago

As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations for Tomb Raider, Square Enix has revealed footage and details of Tomb Raider: Ascension, an early survival-horror-like prototype created by Crystal Dynamics as it explored ways to reimagine the series - with various aspects of the project ultimately making their way into the developer's 2013 reboot.

"After narrowing in on the concept of a survival story on a remote island," explains Square Enix over on YouTube, "[Crystal Dynamics] began developing what was internally called Tomb Raider: Ascension." The project is said to have "felt closer to a horror game than a Tomb Raider title" at one point, although this aspect would eventually fade into the background as the studio opted to focus in on survival elements.

What's In The Fortnite Item Shop Today - October 21, 2021: NBA Skins Return, NBA Trophy Debuts

2 years 6 months ago

It's a new day in the Fortnite Item Shop, and alongside more Halloween characters and the reveal of a brand-new character, the licensed NBA skins have returned. The timing is no coincidence. With the NBA season tipping off today, and several teams already vying for their first W, the full slate of NBA skins are back in the store. Even better, another NBA item makes its debut as a purchasable cosmetic after previously being available only to tournament winners. Here's everything in the Fortnite Item Shop for October 21, 2021.

With the NBA skins, you can choose from several different men or women as the base model, and purchasing any of the characters in the In The Paint set permanently unlocks jerseys and customizable numbers for all 30 NBA teams. That means you're not bound to just a single player or even jersey number. Change it as often as you'd like--a tremendous value for bandwagon fans everywhere, no doubt.

Fortnite shoots and scores with the return of NBA skins.

Along with the NBA character skins, you can also nab the NBA Championship Trophy back bling for the first time ever. Over the summer, this was given out to winners of the Fortnite X NBA: The Crossover event, but now even if you weren't on that winning Lakers team, you can still lug the shiny trophy around in style.

Here's everything in the NBA section of the shop:

Everwild Reboot Reports Were a 'Little Extreme,' Xbox Game Studios Head Says

2 years 6 months ago

Back in June, a report indicated that Everwild, Rare's newest game IP, was being completely rebooted. In a recent interview with Kinda Funny, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said that that report was "more definite and a little more extreme" than the truth.

In his Kinda Funny interview (via GamesRadar), Booty elaborated on how game development, particularly the narratively rich and distinct flavor that Rare creates, is a difficult process consisting of thousands of little decisions.

"What is Rare known for?" Booty said. "They're known for creating new IP and creating worlds. I'll say when you look at it from the outside, when you hear words like 'reset' and maybe 'restructure,' those are probably a little more definite and a little more extreme than what really happens as a game comes to life."

Booty also referenced his time working alongside NBA Jam developer Mark Trammell.

"He used to say that a game gets made a thousand small decisions at a time," Booty said. "Every day you're making hundreds of small decisions and at the end of however long you work on the game, they all add up. I think that's where the Everwild team is right now. They're just trying to make sure that they've got something special."

Square Enix Releases Footage From Cancelled Lara Croft Horror Game Tomb Raider Ascension

2 years 6 months ago

Square Enix has released footage from its canceled horror Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider: Ascension.

The company released the footage as part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations and in the roughly seven minutes of footage, we see a greyed-out character model that’s clearly Lara Croft traversing through dark caves, marshes, spooky houses, and more, as reported by Video Games Chronicle. The footage is very obviously prototype footage from early in the game’s development, but it’s a fascinating look at what games can become over time. Case in point, Ascension would later become the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot.

“Check out footage from Tomb Raider: Ascension, which took Tomb Raider deep into survival horror territory during the exploratory phases of what would eventually become the 2013 reboot,” Square Enix writes in the footage’s description. “It was through Ascension that the team honed in on telling an origin story through the lens of survival.”

Eidos-Montréal Details Guardians Of The Galaxy In-Game Settings And Accessibility Options

2 years 6 months ago

Tuesday marks the release of Eidos-Montréal's newest adventure, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, where players take control of Star-Lord and his space-faring crew of misfits. In the lead-up to launch, the developers have posted a new blog covering everything you'll find in the game's settings menus, including a bevy of adjustable accessibility options.

To find the complete list of options and settings, look right here. In it, you'll find some pretty standard toggles like camera controls, keybindings on PC, audio adjustments, and so on. However, there are some toggles and sliders in GOTG which go much deeper. Subtitles can have different sized fonts, letter spacing, backgrounds, and background colors. Game difficulty includes Easy, Intended (a very good name for the default difficulty), and Hard modes with a fourth option which lets you go granular on the kind of play experience you want with Custom.

Having a customizable difficulty mode is a great idea. Not everyone wants to or can play a game as the developers intended it. Eidos-Montreal has added sliders for how much damage you deal, how much damage Star-Lord takes, and even how much ammo Elemental weapons consume. Here are some of the other changes you can make in Custom difficulty:

Free Four Hour Riders Republic Trial Goes Live Tomorrow For a Week; Progress Will Carry Over to Paid Version

2 years 6 months ago

Starting tomorrow any prospective buyers of Riders Republic, a new game from the folks that brought you Steep, can give the full version of the game a go for up to four hours over the course of the next week leading up to the game’s release on Oct. 28.

This trial week will, as stated above, will essentially be a full version of the game, and any progress you make during the trial will carry over if you choose to pay for the full version. This includes stats, the gear you unlock, everything essentially.

In addition, if you choose to participate in the trial, you can try and complete a Mad Challenge which will earn you rewards if you’re successful. You can sign up here if you’re interested in that.

This is an interesting approach to promote the game. Four hours should be enough time to figure out if Riders Republic is for you or not, and being able to carry literally everything over is a nice touch.

Riders Republic is kind of a sequel to Steep, it still has some winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, but will also include new sports such as mountain biking, wingsuit flying, and the totally real sport of rocket wingsuiting. The game features “mass races” which pits a ton of players against each other in huge races that appear to be extremely chaotic and, hopefully, fun.

Riders Republic releases on Oct. 28 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. You can dig into the details of the Trial Week here if you’re interested in downloading and participating.

Back 4 Blood: The Kotaku Review

Celebrated filmmaker Jim Jarmusch once said, “Originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it.” Back 4 Blood, a new zombie-themed co-op shooter developed by Turtle Rock Studios, sure puts this principle into practice. Even its name is a direct callback to the…

Dune: Imperium Review

2 years 6 months ago

For decades, fans of Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel Dune could only get their tabletop kicks from one game, also called Dune. But it was some game: released in 1979 it was years ahead of its time and encouraged players to recreate the Machiavellian scheming of the novel. However, it needed six players to shine and had a wildly variable play time.

Now there’s a new pretender to the throne in Dune: Imperium. It’s a very different beast, eschewing the classic territorial conquest setup of the old game for a mishmash of modern strategic design ideas. But with the Dune name on the box and an acclaimed new film adaptation in the cinemas, it’s well poised for success.

What’s in the Box

For all that the novels have inspired some great art down the years, Dune: Imperium opts for function over form. The board and box are awash with muted desert tones, as you might expect. Beneath, there are a lot of cards with a lot of serviceable art to illustrate them. The best bits are the portraits on the leader cards players use to indicate their allegiance.

There are wooden bits too, cubes that are both used on score tracks and to represent troops, and humanoid shapes for agents. It’s all pretty standard fare, although the player colors are bold and striking.

Over 30,000 FIFA 22 Players Get Temporarily Banned for an Exploit, But Get to Keep Rewards

2 years 6 months ago

EA has temporarily banned over 30,000 players in FIFA 22 for seven days. These bans were the results of the players taking advantage of a "no loss" glitch in the game's Ultimate Team mode last week.

As reported by Eurogamer an exploit appeared where, if abused, players could obtain a 20-0 perfect win record. All players had to do is click on the "home" button on their PlayStation or Xbox controllers to go back to the console's home screen. Then simply wait for the match to time out.

If players were losing a match, they could use this exploit and the game wouldn't register it as a loss.

Apex Legends Patch Notes Include More Defense Against Denial-Of-Service Attacks

2 years 6 months ago

Apex Legends' latest update is out now, bringing with it a number of fixes and improvements for the game. Although it's not the most exciting update, it should nonetheless improve the game experience overall.

One improvement that Respawn has pushed to the game is to make is more resilient to denial-of-service attacks. The developer has worked on DoS attacks in the past; they can make the experience of playing a game extremely frustrating, as attackers attempt to force players offline by flooding game servers with traffic. Apex has been plagued by DoS attacks this year, and Respawn mounted a significant effort to counter these actions back in June. Today's patch notes suggest that the studio is still improving its defenses.

The update also includes an assortment of miscellaneous bug fixes and performance improvements. For example, Respawn has fixed melee and spin-up exploits affecting the Sheila mobile mini-gun, and it has fixed the color of the raven on Bloodhound's Niflheim Hundr skin. You can see the full list of tweaks below.

Apex Legends is currently in the midst of its Monsters Within Halloween event that adds a bunch of new skins and the Shadow Royale mode. In addition, Respawn recently revealed that Titanfall's Ash will be Apex's next character dropping in Season 11.

The update adding raytracing and other mod cons to The Witcher 3 will not launch this year, developers CD Projekt Red announced today. They've been fancying up their fantasy RPG for the latest console generation, and those 'next-gen' additions are headed to PC in a patch too. But not this year. Instead, look to be blinded by the light in spring 2022. They've also delayed the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 for consoles.

You Can Get A Dead By Daylight Pinhead NFT

2 years 6 months ago

A Pinhead NFT, specifically the in-game Dead By Daylight model of the iconic Cenobite, is now available to purchase. Feelings are mixed, of course, since NFTs currently exist in the weird area of scams and actually interesting ideas of decentralized tech.

NFTs stand for non-fungible tokens. By using blockchain tech that generates these one-of-a-kind tokens, people can purchase and "own '' digital items. However, the definition of ownership is pretty nebulous here: NFT owners just get to say they own the original of some digital item, but can't prevent anybody from right-clicking and downloading the thing from the internet.

So what does it mean if you decide to purchase this Pinhead NFT specifically? You do get access to the Hellraiser chapter of Dead by Daylight on PC. But, according to the FAQ, no Dead By Daylight content will be locked behind the purchase.

In other words, purchasing the Pinhead NFT means you just get to say you own a digital item based on the Dead By Daylight character model, with no real in-game tie-in to Dead By Daylight's gameplay. There is a nebulous promise by the NFT-maker, Boss Protocol, that the Pinhead NFT will "allow owners to unlock the character in other games that are now in development." It's a vague statement, and we'll have to see how that manifests in the future. Pinhead NFT owners will also get another NFT, the Lament Configuration Box, as a bonus.
