The Best Black Friday SSD Deal for Your PS5: 2TB for Under $100 (Updated)

The Amazon Black Friday Sale has officially started, and currently there are a couple of 2TB PS5-compatible solid state drives that you can score for under $100: the Nextorage Japan 2TB SSD for $99.99 and the Silicon Power XS70 2TB SSD for $97.97. Both of these SSDs are fast enough to exceed the specs of the PS5's stock internal SSD and come with a preinstalled heatsink that does a fine job of keeping things cool.

Black Friday Deal: Nextorage 2TB PS5 SSD with Heatsink for $99.99

This SSD fulfills all the requisites that make it PS5 compatible. It boasts sequential read and write speeds of 7300MB/s and 6900MB/s, which is much higher than the minimum recommendation of 5,600MB/s. It also includes a robust double-sided aluminum heatsink that's preinstalled on the SSD. This is much better than some of the cheaper SSDs that only include thin graphite heatspreaders.

Honeycomb: The World Beyond is above-ground Subnautica with bioengineering and hoverboards

I was just pondering writing something about Subnautica, inspired by revelations that there’s a new Subnautica project on the boil, and along comes the decidedly Subnautica-esque Honeycomb: The World Beyond with a trailer. Developed by Polish team Frozen Way, whose other projects include, erm, Hairdresser Simulator, it casts you as Hennessy, a human xenobiologist who is starting afresh on the alien planet of Sota7.

As in Unknown Worlds’ survival sim, you’ll search various biomes for resources, build solar-powered habitats on stilts with nice, wide windows, and gradually amass a database of local animals and plants. Unlike in Subnautica, you won’t be constantly at risk of suffocation.

Ranking Every Mainline Final Fantasy Game

Game Informer Ranking Every Mainline Final Fantasy Game

Final Fantasy is a staple in JRPGs and video games as a whole. It might have more entries in it than any other series out there and it won’t be slowing down anytime soon. On top of that, thanks to its anthology-like nature, if one Final Fantasy game doesn’t click for you, there’s a good chance another one will. As a result, ranking the Final Fantasy series can be highly contentious. Everyone has a lot of love for the first entry they played, and then there are heavy hitters like Final Fantasy X and VII, too.

However, the staff here at Game Informer did the seemingly impossible: we ranked all 19 mainline numbered Final Fantasy games, including their direct sequels, from worst to best. As a reminder, this ranking is the sum of collective thoughts of the Game Informer staff and your own personal ranking will almost certainly be different. We’d love to know your ranking, though, so after checking out ours, drop your own in the comments below!

New Steam Deck OLED owners, take note: JSAUX’s flexible ModCase range is on sale for Black Friday

Both the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED come bundled with cases – new and improved ones, if you get a 1TB OLED – so it wouldn’t initially make sense to invest in a third-party one. But Steam Deck accessories can take many forms, and I’ve been particularly convinced by the case style that combines a space-saving protective skin with a tougher removeable cover. Since the Dbrand Project Killswitch isn’t playing Black Friday ball, it falls to my other favourite, JSAUX’s ModCase, to provide the bargains.

It works thusly: instead of taking your Steam Deck in and out of a zip-up sarcophagus every time you want to play it on the move, you simply leave the handheld wrapped in the ModCase’s snug, rubbery skin, simultaneously protecting it and adding grip as you hold it. The front cover simply snaps on and off as needed. It’s a lighter, more compact alternative to a full case that, I can say from experience, absolutely shields the precious Deck effectively enough for everyday bag duty. As the name suggests, it’s modular as well, so you can mount other accessories (like kickstands, power banks and even a secondary cooling fan) to the back of the skin.

Just want the case? No bother, that’s down from $30 from $26. There’s no UK version of the JSAUX store, unfortunately, though JSAUX ships internationally. Just click through the link below, and select which kit you'd like.

Mortal Kombat 1: Tremor’s Secret Brutality Is a Lot Happier

Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo character Tremor launched this week, and players have already discovered his secret Brutality.

Mortal Kombat 1 spoilers are ahead.

All Mortal Kombat 1 characters have Brutalities — unique moves that end a match in a particularly brutal fashion. They’re triggered by doing an extra input command on top of a specific combo ender or move that wins the final round. Most of the characters in the game have six brutalities, but players have discovered a number of secret brutalities, too.

Recently released DLC character Omni-Man, for example, has a secret brutality that’s in essence an alternate version of one of his existing brutalities. For detailed instructions, head over to IGN’s Mortal Kombat 1 how to do hidden brutalities guide.

Tekken 8 PC requirements pack a punch, requires 100 GB available storage space

The upcoming PC requirements for Tekken 8 are now available on Steam.

According to the platform, PC users will need to ensure they have 100GB of installation space available.

Tekken 8 developer Bandai Namco has also listed 16 GB RAM as its recommended memory requirement. While this does seem to be along the standard line for PC games today, it is still twice that of Mortal Kombat 1's memory recommendations.

The Best Black Friday Board Game Deals on Amazon Just Got Updated

Amazon Black Friday has started in earnest. Most of the deals aren't available yet (more will be released each day), but the one exception is the board games category. Amazon has dropped the price on dozens of popular board games and board game expansions. These include favorites like Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, Catan, Carcassonne, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Azul, Wingspan and more. However, there are also several more niche games that we've rarely seen discounted, like Everdell, Agricola, Pandemic Legacy, Paleo, and more. So if your board game collection could use some freshening up, then peruse the list right here. We'll add more deals as we see them go live.

Wingspan Board Game for $35.33

Wingspan from Stonemeier Games is an incredibly good board game. So good in fact that we deemed it the best board game of 2019. Wingspan looks like a deceptively simple game; the endgame goal is to attract as many birds as you can to your wildlife preserve and help them proliferate. There are only four actions you can perform: draw a bird card, play a bird card, get food, and lay eggs. Sounds simple enough, right? Well let's just say these four actions mask an incredibly complex engine-building game with which you will have to juggle between bringing new birds into the fold and keeping your existing birds well stocked and in a breeding frenzy. Wingspan is infinitely replayable, and you'll find yourself developing and honing new strategies with every subsequent playthough.

Ex-Grand Theft Auto Dev Pulls Behind-the-Scenes Blog, Says Someone From Rockstar Had a Word

A former member of staff at Rockstar who worked on a raft of Grand Theft Auto games has pulled their behind-the-scenes development blog after someone from the studio got in touch.

Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij started the blog on November 11 to discuss their time at Rockstar North, the Scottish studio behind the Grand Theft Auto series.

A number of eye-catching blog posts delved into the development of the older Grand Theft Auto games and even other Rockstar projects. One revealed fresh insight into the collapsed development of Agent, a game Rockstar has never formally cancelled, and further posts discussed other scrapped projects, such as a Scottish zombie survival game.

Something about ruining the Rockstar mystique or something.

But it seems some staff at Rockstar North weren’t thrilled by the revelations, and Vermeij has now pulled all posts from the blog. In a statement, Vermeij said: “Today I got an email from Rockstar North. Apparently some of the OGs there are upset by my blog. I genuinely didn't think anyone would mind me talking about 20 year old games but I was wrong. Something about ruining the Rockstar mystique or something.

“Anyway, this blog isn't important enough to me to piss off my former colleagues in Edinburgh so I'm winding it down. I'll maybe just leave a few articles with anecdotes that don't affect anyone but me. I would love for Rockstar to open up about development of the trilogy themselves, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon. Maybe I'll try again in a decade or two.”

The Witcher 3 Hides a Tragic Love Story No One Knew About

The Witcher 3 is chock full of romance that often ends in disaster but CD Projekt Red has revealed one tragic love story from the Blood and Wine expansion that no one knew about.

Speaking during the developer's AnsweRED podcast, story director Tomasz Marchewka said CD Projekt Red designed one character to be secretly in love with another, but circumstance kept those feelings locked away.

That character is Damien de la Tour, captain of Toussaint's ducal guard under Duchess Anna Henrietta. And who was he in love with? The woman he was sworn to protect, Henrietta herself.

He is secretly in love with her. And because he's not an aristocrat, it's impossible for him to even imagine that.

"I don't think it's said anywhere in the game but we assume that he is secretly in love with her," said Marchewka. "And because he's not an aristocrat, it's impossible for him to even imagine that that could have happened.

"I think there's one moment when she states she's gonna be in grave danger and so on, and he just looks at her. And if you know what to look for, in that look you see the depth of the relationship. It's super subtle, I don't know how transparent it is, but we always remembered about him being basically willing to give his life for her if needed."

Also in The Witcher fashion, the ending of Blood and Wine has different outcomes that see the pair's relationship put to the test. Spoilers for The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine expansion follow, reader beware.

The 2TB Crucial P5 Plus SSD has hit its lowest-ever price in the Black Friday sales

I know this is the second Crucial P5 Plus deal we’ve posted about in two days, but hey, it’s Black Friday week. ‘Tis the season. Besides, this time there’s something for us Britain-dwelling lot as well, as the 2TB P5 Plus’s price has been slashed 60% to £88 on Amazon UK – the lowest it’s ever been.

This is, to be clear, an almost mystifyingly small amount of money for a 2TB NVMe SSD that’s also capable of real high-end transfer speeds and game load times. Maybe not to the standards of its successor, the Crucial T500, but this is still a competitively quick-acting drive with oodles of space for game installations. The same goes for its heatsink-equipped edition, which also happens to be on sale in the US at $88, making it (currently) cheaper than the non-heatsink 2TB model. Good deals all round, then – told you ‘twas the season.

Dear Daniel Is the Worst Hello Kitty Island Adventure Visitor

Dear Daniel Is the Worst Hello Kitty Island Adventure Visitor

Dear Daniel is a scourge upon this planet. Okay. Maybe that is a bit harsh. He’s a cash-in character, but perhaps more of a forgettable annoyance in our everyday life. Would that we could say the same for Hello Kitty Island Adventure, a game in which Dear Daniel is not only the worst Visitor, but a blight upon anyone attempting to get specific characters to stop by and stay forever.

I’m not going to be mean and make this about looks, even though I’m not a fan of Dear Daniel’s design. (A few strands of hair on his forehead to differentiate him is quite lazy.) This is about his nature. The character is part of the Visitor tutorial in the game. This means his requirements to occupy a cabin are easy to clear. It needs to be in the Seaside Resort area, as that is where Hello Kitty lives, and it needs to have three pieces of furniture. Simple!

Also, frustrating! Most other Visitors require specific pieces of furniture from certain types, and often at least three pieces. Because Dear Daniel will set up shop — for multiple days without asking which is very rude — in any cabin in that area that even vaguely fits his requirements, it can lock you out of getting other people to visit. The place you might have specifically prepared for them will have this basic cat squatting in it!

South Park: Snow Day's 3D Art Style Is Putting Off Some Fans

THQ Nordic has released its best look yet at upcoming multiplayer game South Park: Snow Day in an official gameplay trailer, but some fans are a little put off by its 3D art style.

The one-minute trailer shows off the action-adventure role-playing game which, unlike South Park itself and the critically acclaimed Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole games from Ubisoft, features a 3D art style instead of 2D. Fans haven't responded particularly well to this switch, with a Reddit post discussing the gameplay trailer full of criticism for Snow Day's graphics.

"I don’t think South Park’s art style translates well to 3D and the characters look really out of place in the high resolution snowy environment," said Pacmantis. "Yeah, the 3D reminds me of the old attempts to make a South Park game from the 90s and 2000s. It never translates well," replied MyCoolWhiteLies.

Plenty of other users agreed. "I don't know why they would go for 3D. They already nailed it a decade ago with Stick of Truth by just making it look indistinguishable from the show," said one. "This doesn't look good at all. Really jarring art style," said another. "South Park doesn't work well as a 3D game," said a third.

Comparisons to the Ubisoft games were also frequent. "The Stick of Truth was magic, like being dropped in a playable episode, and The Fractured But Whole was almost as good. This one seems like a severe regression," said likwitsnake. "I just want another turn based South Park RPG like Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole, not this," added ImJustSaiyan.

Alternatively, Intellivision states the official Amico hardware controllers are compatible with the app via Bluetooth, except they haven't been released yet and the company didn't specify when customers can expect them.

Stunning Zelda Fan-Film Reimagines Ocarina of Time as a Studio Ghibli Movie

What if Zelda: Ocarina of Time was the basis of a Studio Ghibli movie? It might look like this stunning fan-film, put together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest video games of all time.

Creator RwanLink spent a whopping 600 hours across four months rebuilding Hyrule Castle Town in super detailed fashion using Unreal Engine 5. There are four environments and over 30 characters in the test animation.

The fan-film is published here with permission from RwanLink. You can check out RwanLink's YouTube channel here.

The 18-minute film kicks off in heart-breaking fashion with the death of the Deku Tree. With Navi in tow, Link heads off to Hyrule Castle. Castle Town is bustling (yes, there are chickens and empty bottles), packed with market traders and customers. Link enjoys a spot of playtime with a dog, and fans of Ocarina of Time will spot some familiar faces for sure.

Link spots a royal guard escorting Zelda to the castle and gives chase. A couple of nefarious characters (you know who) turn up for an audience with the king. Beware, Link!

The video then shows off a third-person perspective. RwanLink stresses the project was made as a film and not a video game, but it gives us a tantalising glimpse at what a Zelda game made in the Studio Ghibli style might look like.

Knuckle Sandwich review: a turn-based RPG that's a little too random

Made by solo dev Andy Brophy, Knuckle Sandwich is a turn-based RPG that's about guiding a bloke through an island paradise and eventually uncovering some weird mystery. Its main hook? Turn-based battles are filled with WarioWare-style minigames, many of which are unique to the kooky residents or rats you come up against. Unfortunately, I'd say its main hook is actually its most painful barb, and one you're barely able to extract by flicking some switches in the settings menu. A shame then, as exploring its strange world and absorbing its bonkers story beats is a wonderful thing marred by dire fights.

New Tribes Game Emerges 11 Years After Tribes: Ascend Came Out

A brand new Tribes game is in development, and fresh details on it have begun to emerge.

Tribes is a multiplayer sci-fi FPS series, often dubbed 'the world's fastest shooter', that saw five releases from 1998 to 2012. The most recent entry, the critically acclaimed Tribes: Ascend, was developed by Hi-Rez Studios years before it released Smite, Paladins, and Rogue Company.

The new Tribes, which has yet to receive an official title, is in development at Prophecy Games, a new studio founded in late 2019 within the Hi-Rez Studios umbrella. But in early 2020, Prophecy spun off from Hi-Rez to become an independent studio — and it looks like it took Tribes with it.

FPS-Z reports fresh playtests for the new Tribes game kick off soon, and published a number of screenshots from a previous playtest. These images provide us with our first look at the new Tribes game, which does not have a release window.

KnifePlayground is an Unreal horror royale with bodycam combat, demon clowns and a shapeshifting mansion

Let's get this out of the way first: KnifePlayground: Horror Battle Royale is an absolutely terrible name for game. Announced just today and created by small Brazilian team MadMozer, it's a first-person, multiplayer-focussed, Unreal Engine deathgame that traps you in a randomly generated mansion with a bunch of archetypal horror movie munsters - demon clowns, cursed puppets, toothy ghouls and hooded axe-murderers.

Modern Warfare 3 developer investigating Call of Duty snake movement "exploit"

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 developer Sledgehammer Games has said it is "investigating" an exploit that allows players to wriggle around on the floor while prone at fast speeds.

It leaves you looking like some kind of human Call of Duty snake, but it also leaves you able to zoom around while lying prone - a very handy tactic for winning gunfights.

Now, Sledgehammer has taken notice and dubbed Call of Duty snaking as a PC exploit to be looked at further. "We're investigating an exploit that allows players to sprint while appearing in the prone animation," the developer wrote on the official CODUPdates account on X, formerly Twitter.

To gift to yourself? I believe so. This deal applies to six different DualSense colour options too, from PS5-standard white to a cool blue and a dubiously useful camo pattern.

The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski says Netflix "never listened" to his feedback

Andrzej Sapkowski may have penned The Witcher novels, which in turn inspired both CD Projekt Red's video game series and Netflix's TV adaptation, but that doesn't mean that the streaming service ever listened to his feedback.

While attending Vienna Comic Con, Sapkowski was asked about the various adaptations that have stemmed from his original works. Speaking with Cerealkillers, the author said that every visual adaptation of his The Witcher series was "strange" for him to see, because as a writer he only uses his words.

"My raw material when I work, it's only letters. I do not describe pictures. I don't see any pictures. I use the letters only because I know that my reader will see in the book the letters only, not the pictures. So I have to do with my letters to make the reader imagine the picture, not the other way around... so every [visual] adaptation, it's simply strange for me," he explained.

Pimax Crystal review: the ultimate VR headset for flight sim and racing games?

Virtual reality has come a long way since its resurgence in the last decade but two problems remain: image clarity and field of view. There's always the feeling that you're looking through a pair of binoculars, your view limited by the screens placed directly in front of your eyes. This is the problem the Pimax Crystal was designed to solve, with a huge field of view and more raw pixels than any other VR headset, but its $1599 asking price (currently reduced to $1440) and steep system requirements raise questions about its viability.

After testing the Crystal for a few weeks, I have some answers. Though there are a lot of hoops to jump through - and some puzzling design choices - when the Crystal shines, it delivers perhaps the most stunning VR experience you can get today.

After all, VR games are unique in that the headset used to play them can have such a profound impact on your experience. Unlike a typical monitor, the headset controls your input, your movement, what you see and how clearly you see it. All of this must be balanced with weight, size, and price, making the process of choosing a headset even more challenging. That's why I'd like to walk you through my experience with the Crystal, so you can judge whether its obvious strengths can overcome its more subtle limitations.

Get £200 off the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, AMD’s flagship 4K GPU, in Ebuyer’s Black Friday sale

Black Friday week has already yielded some tempting deals on Nvidia’s latest mid-range graphics cards, the RTX 4060 and the RTX 4060 Ti. Up at the top of the GPU pyramid, meanwhile, AMD cards are getting in the act as well. Like, say, this £200-off deal on the MSI Radeon RX 7900 XTX Gaming Trio Classic, bringing it down to £900. Still a lot of money, sure, but the RX 7900 XTX is the absolute crème de la crème of the current Radeon lineup, with native 4K performance on par with that of Nvidia’s RTX 4080.

Pile Up! is a city builder in which pretty much everyone's always angry

I swear that London used to have a palace situated on a bridge. I've been googling around this morning and I think I might have been thinking of Nonsuch House, which was on the old London Bridge. Four storeys and built in 1579, I've also just learned that Nonsuch House was the first recorded pre-fab building in history, having been built and then dismantled in the Netherlands and then shipped over to London where they put it back together again.

The reason I've been thinking about all this comes down to an old picture I once saw of London Bridge with this palace on it, and all these other buildings stacked around it too, fairly crowding off the bridge itself in every direction and hanging out over the water. It's exactly the kind of look that Pile Up! traffics in, and I'm getting quietly hooked on Pile Up! at the moment. (That said, I'm going to skip the exclamation point from now on because it keeps bodging up my typing.)

I first read about the game on RPS, where Katharine Castle referred to it as a sort of spin on Townscaper with a bit more actual game to it. That's spot on. Another way of putting it might be: it's Townscaper but everyone's furious with you from the start.
