Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew developer announces final ever release

5 months 2 weeks ago

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew developer Mimimi Games has announced it'll release two DLC expansions for the supernatural stealth tactics game on 6th December.

The DLCs will mark the final release from Mimimi before it closes as it announced back in August. At the time, studio co-founders Dominik Abé and Johannes Roth revealed it was working on a "big content drop" for Shadow Gambit, which we know now is in the form of two expansion.

Each expansion will include a new playable character with unique abilities, a new island to explore, and a story campaign told across six new missions. The new characters can be used in most of the main game's missions and aren't limited to the DLC missions, Mimimi stated.

Long-delayed Prince of Persia remake gets a brief update

5 months 2 weeks ago

Ubisoft has given a brief update on its missing in action Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, which has had a troubled development and still lacks a formal release date.

Originally announced back in 2020 for release the following year, work on the game was rebooted when development dragged on and the project was then moved from Ubisoft Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal.

Updates from the project have since been scarce, though Ubisoft broke cover last night to state that the game was still very much in development and had recently "passed an important internal milestone".

If you wish Ghostwire: Tokyo was an actual horror game, try the demo for Chiyo

5 months 2 weeks ago

The Xmas season approaches, but for some of us, Halloween never ends. I've just finished (well, reached a grisly end within) the demo for Chiyo, a first-person horror game from Nimbus Games, set in Edo era Japan, in which you are a plucky young mystic sent by the Tokugawa Shogunate's Magical Arcane Division to investigate and cleanse a spooky abandoned mansion on the coast.

Much like the protagonist of fellow Japan-set exor-simulator Ghostwire: Tokyo, you have a brace of occult, gesture-based powers with which to explore and, hopefully, vanquish any lurking spirits, but so far, the only ones I've gotten access to are a funky finger torch, the ability to unseal cursed doors, and the ability to see glowing puzzle props through surfaces. I very much do not feel like an Edo era John Constantine. I don't even feel like an Edo era Scooby Doo. I mean, at least he was good at running away: the titular Chiyo waddles about like she's worried her trousers are about to fall down.

Rockstar Scraps Social Club Branding Ahead of GTA 6 Reveal

5 months 2 weeks ago

Rockstar Games has scrapped the Social Club branding for its online membership system ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6's highly anticipated reveal.

As reported by PC Gamer, unofficial Rockstar news account @videotechuk_ on X/Twitter (below) shared a before and after of messages on the former Social Club website, showing the rebrand.

Any reference to "Social Club members" has been changed to "Rockstar Games members" on the website. "You don't have any Social Club friends", now reads: "You don't have any Rockstar Games friends", for example.

Rockstar hasn't made any official announcements regarding these changes, and some instances of the Social Club branding remain on its website. It doesn't appear any actual features of the Social Club have been changed either, so actual players of Rockstar games like Grand Theft Auto 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 shouldn't be affected.

Call of Duty boasts Modern Warfare 3 has broken new engagement records

Activision has said its new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has broken multiple player engagement records, without providing any specific player numbers.

"Just two weeks in, Modern Warfare 3 has already set records with the highest engagement in the new Modern Warfare trilogy," states a post by the Call of Duty account on X, formerly Twitter.

These records include the fact Modern Warfare 3 owners are playing "more hours per player overall" and "campaign players [are] putting in more time per player" than in the modern Modern Warfare 1 and 2.

After Unity's crisis, GameMaker replaces subscriptions with one-off fee for indies

5 months 2 weeks ago

GameMaker, a series of cross-platform engines for game developers, has ditched its subscription model for non-commercial purposes, hobbyists and indie developers.

GameMaker will now be free for anyone using its software non-commercially on all non-console platforms. Creator and indie subscriptions have been replaced with a one-time fee of $100, meanwhile, which grants a commercial license and enables exports to desktop and mobile platforms.

The change appears to have been prompted by the recent and controversial changes Unity announced for its pricing model, which would introduce a fee for developers per game install. The plan was met with anger from indie developers, causing Unity to walk back significantly on its proposed changes.

Diablo 4 Free on Steam For a Week

5 months 2 weeks ago

Blizzard Entertainment has made its action role-playing game Diablo 4 free-to-play on Steam for a week.

Steam users can download and trial the game until November 28 at 10am Pacific / 1pm Eastern / 6pm UK. Diablo 4 launched first in June on PC via Blizzard's own Battle.net, where it remains a premium game. It's also on PlayStation and Xbox.

The free-to play period lets users play Diablo 4 up to level 20, which equates to around eight hours of gameplay. Blizzard will likely be hoping those who get there will be tempted by the game's 40% off price-tag in the Steam Autumn Sale, which also ends November 28.

Those sales would only add to the already record-breaking popularity of Diablo 4, which is Blizzard's fastest-selling game of all time with more than 10 million players. However, Diablo 4 has suffered some ups and downs due to controversial updates and aggressive monetisation. Blizzard has pushed on and continues to regularly update Diablo 4 with patches and new content via seasons. Diablo 4's first expansion, called Vessel of Hatred, is due out late 2024.

Even though it's mid-week, Black Friday is in full swing this week at a variety of retailers. While there's an abundance of great deals to look through, one of our favorites is the Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle for $299. The Witcher Is Coming to Destiny 2

5 months 2 weeks ago

Bungie's sci-fi shooter Destiny 2 is getting an unusual crossover as CD Projekt Red's The Witcher is coming to the cosmetics store.

Bungie released an image, below, showing fans what to expect from the upcoming collaboration. The Geralt of Rivia armour, due out November 28, includes armour ornaments, a Ghost shell, ship, Sparrow, emote, and finisher.

The centre set, worn by the Titan, is most reminiscent of The Witcher and protagonist Geralt in particular. It's based on the Kaer Morhen armour available in The Witcher 3, the same set that features on most key art including the box cover.

Image%20credit%3A%20Bungie.

The Warlock's set looks based the Ursine Armour and the clothing of the Skellige people in general, while the Hunter's set of course features a hood and is therefore reminiscent of the agile Cat School armour.

The collaboration arrives alongside Season of the Wish, perhaps a coincidental reference to the first Witcher book, The Last Wish. Bungie also enjoys another easy reference to the beloved fantasy series, with the second Witcher Book being the Sword of Destiny.

Jet Force Gemini arrives on Nintendo Switch Online next week

Nintendo 64 classic Jet Force Gemini will join the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription service next week, on Thursday 30th November.

This sci-fi third-person shooter was developed during the N64 heyday of British studio Rare, and launched during the four-year period the company also released classics such as GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 and Perfect Dark.

It may not have the brand power of some of those, but it's still a solid arcade-inspired adventurey shooter with a lengthy single-player and a deathmatch-style multiplayer.

The grandest factory sim ever made is getting an interplanetary combat system this December

Dyson Sphere Program is already rather overwhelming - this is, after all, a strategy sim about wrapping whole planets in conveyor belts so as to build cages around stars and harvest their juices - and now the absolute madfolk of Youthcat Studio are adding combat features. It's like watching somebody upend a bucket of termites over the world's most elaborate model trainset.

The associated Rise of the Dark Fog update is out on 15th December. Youthcat have put together a nifty announcement trailer that makes cunning use of the ability to raze factories from orbit - I'm curious to know if it was actually performed in-game.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin review - decent but disappointing strategy

5 months 2 weeks ago

In the fabled beforetimes of the early 2010s, Games Workshop made the decision to end the world. Not our world, though it may feel like it at times, but the Old World of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. The long-bearded miniatures game was vastly outperformed by its younger sci-fi sibling, Warhammer 40,000, so in 2015 it was killed off and replaced with Warhammer Age of Sigmar. This new setting, literally built from the shards of the previous one, reinterpreted iconic Warhammer elements and added a whole pile of shiny newness, most prominently the Stormcast Eternals, huge armoured warriors designed to be the mass appeal poster boys that GW felt WFB lacked.

To say it was a controversial move is something of an understatement, and while this isn't the time or place for a deep dive into why, it does help explain why AoS has largely been ignored by the video game industry, while high-profile Old World-set games like the Total War: Warhammer series (which didn't even start until a year after the release of AoS) have still been popping up. Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin isn't the first video game set in the Mortal Realms of AoS, but it is the first one to make much of a stir.

Lethal Company Players Discover that the Game’s So Much Better With Gangnam Style In It

5 months 2 weeks ago

Developed by Zeekerss, Lethal Company is the latest multiplayer horror indie hit on Steam. Its explosion in popularity quickly led to it surpassing Phasmophobia in terms of peak concurrent players, and needless to say, the fun mods are already pouring in.

Reddit user u/boheaa posted a clip on the forum showing off the custom boombox music mod for the game, and while it’s simple in premise, it also makes the game that much more goofy and funny. The mod in question does exactly what it says on the box: it lets you play custom music on the in-game boombox, which players can carry around the map.

Lethal Company Officially Surpasses Phasmophobia in Peak Concurrent Players

Within just a week of its early access release, it looks like Zeekerss’ new indie hit Lethal Company has quickly surpassed Phasmophobia in terms of all-time peak concurrent players. This is a pretty impressive feat, especially if you think back to how popular Phasmophobia was back when it first released in 2020.

Kinetic Games’ ghostbusting horror game released during the height of COVID-19 and quickly took over as one of Steam’s biggest games of the year, but that crown has officially been passed over to Lethal Company.

Second Dinner Promises More Updates on Marvel Snap Series Drops this Year

5 months 2 weeks ago

Ask any Marvel Snap player what they think about Series drops, and it’ll quickly become clear that this is a pretty contentious topic within the community. When Series 4 and 5 were first introduced to the game, Second Dinner had stated that Series 5 cards would drop to Series 4 after a set amount of time.

However, they quickly reneged on this statement and implemented a flexible Series drop system, where new cards would occasionally release in Series 4, and Series drops would happen as and when it made sense. With that in mind, we haven’t seen a proper Series drop in more than half a year, and naturally, the community is getting pretty pissed off about it.

miHoYo to Re-Run Genshin Impact Paimon Scale Figure

5 months 2 weeks ago

paimon figure genshin impact

HoYoverse will re-release a scale figure of Paimon from Genshin Impact. It’ll come out sometime in March 2024. [Thanks, Hobby Dengeki!]

The Paimon figure from HoYoVerse looks like she’s holding up her hand and waving hello at the Traveler. She also has a big smile on her face, with her cape flowing behind her. The Paimon figure will cost 6380 JPY ($43). She is a 1/7 scale, standing at approximately 14 centimeters tall.

As mentioned earlier, her release window is March 2024. You can order her via sites such as Tokyo Figure, which offers international shipping. Paimon is arguably one of the most recognizable characters in Genshin Impact because she is the game's mascot. Her face is even the logo of the application.

Since the game first came there has been numerous merchandise featuring her. For example, in 2021, a set of miniature Paimon figures showing her with food came out. This is a reference to a joke in which the Traveler refers to Paimon as “emergency food,” though the joke disappeared early in the game’s lifespan.

Diablo 4 is free to try on Steam for the next week

5 months 2 weeks ago

Conveniently timed to coincide with the launch of this year's Steam autumn sale, Blizzard has announced a free trial week for Diablo 4 - plus discounts across all versions of the game - starting today and running until 28th November.

Diablo 4's free trial lets players dip their toes into the world of Sanctuary, and includes full access to co-op and crossplay, but there's one major limitation: progression is capped at level 20. It's unclear how much playtime that'll likely equate to, given Diablo 4's Mother's Blessing event is also now live, boosting XP and Gold by 35% until 27th November.

Regardless, Blizzard says all trial progress can be carried over to the full game should your time with Diablo 4 convince you to make a purchase. And there's additional incentive to do so, considering all versions of the game are currently discounted by 40% as part of the Steam sale.

Persona 5 Tactica Developers Talk About Adapting the Series to SRPG

5 months 2 weeks ago

Persona 5 Tactica SRPG

In a recent interview, the developers of Persona 5 Tactica talked about adapting the series to the SRPG genre. They also discussed the reason for choosing that genre and their experience developing the Atlus title. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Persona 5 Tactica is the first strategy RPG in the Persona series. Composer Toshiki Konishi also noted that it is the first Atlus simultaneous worldwide release on multiple platforms. Director Naoya Maeda said that the development of Persona 5 Tactica lasted approximately four years.

Business Producer Atsushi Nomura said that the developers wanted to focus on showing the Phantom Thieves acting as a team when they started the project. The developers then concluded that the most appropriate genre to deliver the feeling would be a strategy RPG.

Since some members of the development team weren’t fans of strategy RPGs due to their perceived high difficulty and the time-consuming element of leveling and managing so many different units, Maeda revealed that a lot of effort went into streamlining some of the game's most challenging elements, while maintaining the sense of progressing and growing each playable unit.

Subnautica's next series entry expected to release in first half of 2025

If your life has been upsettingly devoid of underwater terror since polishing off Subnautica: Below Zero, a glimmer of nautical promise is on the (distant) horizon, with publisher Krafton confirming it expects the ocean survival series' next instalment to arrive in the first half of 2025.

Official word that a new Subnautica game was on the way first surfaced in April last year, when developer Unknown Worlds - the studio behind the series' original 2018 entry and its 2021 follow-up Subnautica: Below Zero - announced it was seeking a senior narrative designer to "help shape the next game in the Subnautica universe".

And now, a little over 18 months later, the new Subnautica has made an appearance in publisher Krafton's slate of upcoming releases, as shared via the deeply unsexy means of financial report slide presentation (thanks Rock Paper Shotgun). It's set to launch in "1H25" - the first half of 2025 - but, beyond that, details are limited.

17 years after release, Star Wars: Empire At War just got patched to support 64-bit

Star Wars: Empire At War wasn't a great game, but it did fulfill a simple fantasy: it was a real-time strategy game with original trilogy Star Wars units. If what you wanted was to fling swarms of AT-ATs against swarms of X-Wings then, yeah, you could do that. Darth Vader versus entire platoons of rebel soldiers? That too.

Why am I talking about a 2006 RTS? Because it just got a new official patch to make it run in 64-bit and fix a number of bugs.

Here's 22 minutes of Dave the Diver dev's PvPvE zombie adventure Nakwon

5 months 2 weeks ago

Back in September, Dave the Diver studio Mintrocket unveiled Nakwon: Last Paradise, a 16-player stealth-survival extraction game set on the streets of Seoul amid an undead apocalypse, and now - with a public pre-alpha playtest looming - it's shared 22 minutes of gameplay.

Nakwon is a game of two parts; the primary focus is Scouting, requiring players (either solo or in a team of two) to leave the titular safe zone in order to scavenge for resources out in the city. Being a PvPvE experience, the threats outside are twofold: there're the zombies - which can't be killed, meaning stealth is key to survival - alongside other human scavengers, who'll either need to be avoided or set upon with makeshift weaponry (firearms are a scare commodity).

Players can come and go as they like, meaning once they're satisfied with their haul, they can return to the safe zone, where Nakwon's more simulation-focused activities occur. Here, hard-gained resources can be sold for money, which is used to increase Citizen Grades and secure better priveliges and benefits. "Every day, you must decide whether to go out for Scouting or staying inside," Mintrocket explained previously. "But, you must consistently secure more food to avoid starvation and make the best choice whenever an unexpected event occurs."

Worldless, gorgeous Metroidvania with turn-based combat, is out now

5 months 2 weeks ago

I watched a few hours of Worldless being played last night and didn't really register that it was turn-based. That's because it's a Metroidvania platformer and, when it is time for back-and-forth combat, you're not choosing attacks from a menu. Instead you're stringing together combos in real-time, then when your alotted attack time is over, you're parrying enemy assaults with rhythmic flair.
