We Turned 20 Iconic Game Characters Into Pokemon With an AI Tool & the Results are Truly Disturbing

1 year 7 months ago

A new, free artificial intelligence program called Lambdal is currently taking over the Internet. By typing in a prompt, the AI can generate a Pokemon design based on the words you fed to it. It takes about a minute or so to generate the results, but people are using it to create all sorts of unique Pokemon designs.

We had some fun generating our own Pokemon designs using Lambdal, each of which are based on the names of different video game characters. Some of them work extremely well as Pokemon that we would actually want to have in our games. Others… not so much.

Take a look below at 20 of the video game characters that the Lambdal program turned into Pokemon designs based on their names.

Return to Monkey Island Review - A Return To Childhood Nostalgia

Return to Monkey Island

Reviewed on: Switch
Platform: Switch, PC
Publisher: Devolver Digital, Lucasfilm Games
Developer: Terrible Toybox
Release:

"I'm Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate!"

Between the moment Guybrush uttered this iconic line in Return to Monkey Island and our reintroduction to familiar characters like used ship salesman Stan S. Stanman and Cobb, with his "Ask me about Loom" badge, I was already shrouded in a haze of nostalgia. And you would be eating all these up, too, if you're a Monkey Island fan. The thing about Monkey Island enthusiasts is that we can talk your ears off about what makes the series so unique. It's the earnest naivety of its pirate hero Guybrush Threepwood and the series' whimsical and self-referential humor. But most of all, it's that one absurd puzzle you'll need to crack within the original Secret of Monkey Island: the sheer hilarity of transporting an ultra tart blend of a pirate beverage called grog across an island without melting its mug and incinerating your hands along the way.

Amazon Prime Early Access Sale 2022: dates and what to expect

Turns out early access isn’t just for games. The Amazon Prime Early Access Sale is taking place this October 11th-12th, a full six weeks before Black Friday 2022, and from a PC gaming standpoint will offer the same kinds of component and peripheral deals as that annual pre-Christmas shoppingfest. Just earlier.

That said, the Prime Early Access Sale isn’t purely a prelude to the anything-goes chaos of Black Friday. It’s more like a Prime Day 2, in that it’s an Amazon-only event, with all the best deals set to be require Amazon Prime membership to access. That’s right, it’s one of those.

Mark Hamill's Joker could be coming to MultiVersus

Twitter user Laisul shared a recording of what they claimed are lines from an unreleased Joker pack, and they do sound like Hamill’s classic rendition of the Batman villain. Why so serious? Well, announcer packs replace the default MultiVersus announcer with the voice of one of the game’s fighters, so Joker’s addition to the roster seems legit.

Dead Space Remake Team Showed Diehard Fans the Game Every Six Weeks in Early Development

1 year 7 months ago

Dead Space developers used diehard fans to help keep them on track. During a new blog post, creative director Roman Campos-Oriola revealed that the Dead Space remake devs consulted with their very own community council every six weeks.

“Really, really early in development, we started discussions with some members of the community who were identified by our team as diehard fans,” he revealed. “We met with them every six weeks, roughly, and we gave them full access to what we were doing.”

Why did they consult the fans? Well, it seems they wanted to get opinions on a variety of “polarizing” topics.

“Because we have our opinions, but that doesn’t mean we’re right!” said senior producer Philippe Ducharme. “There were a number of polarizing topics we wanted to get a gut-check on, so we gathered feedback from these groups to make informed decisions. A focus on community is one of the key pillars of this project, so we also took feedback from our livestreams, read through user reviews and Twitch comments—there was a lot of intake of information. It was all to understand who we’re addressing with this game, and what made Dead Space spectacular for them.”

The upcoming remake will re-tell the story of systems engineer Isaac Clarke – an unlucky spacefarer who ends up aboard the USG Ishimura, a ship overrun by deadly necromorphs before crew members managed to activate its distress beacon.

Skull and Bones Delayed for the Fifth Time

1 year 7 months ago

Skull & Bones, Ubisoft's pirate battler that's been in development limbo for years now, has been delayed yet again. This is the fifth time.

In a press release today, Ubisoft has given a new release date of March 9, 2023, allowing Skull & Bones to sneak in just ahead of the end of its financial year. The publisher explained in the release that while "game development is finished at this stage," the extra four months will be used to "further polish and balance the experience" following technical tests and Insider Program feedback from prior closed betas.

Skull & Bones' development has been a tumultuous ride. It was first revealed back at E3 2017, appearing at the time to be a riff off of the naval combat in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. At the time, it was set to come out in fall of 2018, and focused on prior-gen consoles.

Mina the Hollower: The First Preview

1 year 7 months ago

Over the past decade, developer Yacht Club Games has created an empire under their Shovel Knight brand making them arguably the face of the indie game space. But with Mina the Hollower, the studio is aiming to bring something completely new to the table, and after my first-look demo, I am eager to see more.

Inspired by the Game Boy Color era and more specifically, The Legend of Zelda franchise, Mina the Hollower wants to bring the best in old and new game design while introducing its own mechanics into the mix. After playing a full level of the game, I was met with fair, but challenging obstacles to overcome alongside fresh, but also familiar gameplay. The result was something that felt completely its own.

At first glance, Mina the Hollower plays as your go-to 2D action-adventure with a top down perspective, but it also reminds me of what I would find in a platformer without traditionally being one. Instead of jumping, your protagonist Mina burrows underground. You can ascend from the ground whenever you want, but you can’t stay burrowed forever. If she is near the ledge of a gap she will leap across, giving you control on where she can land. Throughout my demo I was approached by multiple skill challenges where I had to master the timing of my burrows and jumps to progress through a section of the level. Burrowing will also allow Mina to pick up rocks and pots that can be thrown at enemies.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Will Finally Answer the Question 'What if Diglett Was a Worm?'

1 year 7 months ago

Have you ever considered what Diglett might look like if it were a worm? Well, even if you haven't, tough luck because Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will introduce Wiglett.

Wiglett was revealed during the World Pokémon Ecological Society Webinar (via Serebii). “I’ve never seen a Pokémon quite like that one,” says the voiceover. “Could it be a Diglett? It resembles Diglett but its coloring is different. Could it be a regional form unique to Paldea?”

The new Pokémon looks a lot like Red and Blue's Diglett, but now in more elongated form. It's actually based on the common garden eel rather than a worm but, you know, it is called Wiglett.

“They must be an evolved form of Diglett,” says a second voiceover. “Instead of evolving into triplets like Dugtrio, they adapt to a marine environment with another form.”

Wild Hearts, EA's Monster Hunter Contender, Is Out in February

1 year 7 months ago

EA and Koei Tecmo have revealed that Wild Hearts, the Monster Hunter-like action game from the Dynasty Warriors developer, will arrive on February 17, 2023.

In a new trailer, we got our first real glimpse at the game coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC (with an extended gameplay reveal set for October 5). Set in Azuma – effectively a fantasy feudal Japan – teams of up to three players will take on "giant nature-infused beasts called Kemono", using a mixture of action combat and crafting to create outlandish contraptions.

We learned much more about those contraptions, the Monster Hunter comparisons, and why Koei teamed up with EA for Wild Hearts in our exclusive interview with Koei Tecmo directors Kotaro Hirata and Takuto Edagawa.

Wild Hearts can be played solo or in co-op, with crossplay across all platforms. Your player-character will be almost taken down by a winter wolf called Death Stalker, before being given access to "a life-sustaining technology and... compelled to restore balance across the region."

While the game will look immediately familiar to Monster Hunter fans (or fans of Omega Force's previous Monster Hunter-like series, Toukiden), its core innovation appears to be in the form of Karakuri, magically constructed structures that can aid your hunt.

The trailer shows the player constructuing Karakuri that act as platforms to leap on monsters from, building a giant hammer and bombs, and even spawning a handheld helicopter to glide. Multiple players can use Karakuri too, with one shot revealing players constructuing harpoons that hook a monster in place.

Dead Island 2 Has Breakable Weapons to Balance Its ‘Over-the-Top Mentality’

1 year 7 months ago

Dead Island 2 will feature breakable weapons, so you might want to stock up.

During an interview with VG247, developer Adam Duckett defended the game’s durability system.

“Ranged weapons have ammo, so melee weapons have degradation,” he stated. “We’re generous with it; we want players to explore the full arsenal of weapons – so we have so many great mods, and so many perks, and so many other things in this game that we want players to cycle through. It also helps that players can keep a wide variety of tools in their arsenal, so they’re never going to be without something they can use.”

Dead Island 2 is set to debut on February 3, 2023, and follows the highly successful Dead Island, this time seeing players fighting off a zombie apocalypse in the middle of Los Angeles. Whether you like it or not, durability is going to be a big factor.

“I think [weapon durability] helps fit with our tone a little bit, too,” added art director Adam Olson. “Because this is a game that just keeps going, this is a game that’s over-the-top – but we want to be grounded in reality. Having one foot in reality – and having weapons that break – helps us push other parts of the game into that over-the-top mentality.”

It’s often argued that controversial weapon durability systems add a level of realism to games. You can find these systems in the likes of Breath of the Wild, Yakuza, Far Cry, and even Minecraft. But many players are simply irritated by the constant need to attend to their weapons.

Team Ninja Boss Still Wants to Make a New Ninja Gaiden at Some Point

1 year 7 months ago

Every time Team Ninja announces a new game that isn’t Ninja Gaiden, it feels like the studio will never get around making another adventure for Ryu Hayabusa. Yet, not all hope is lost.

At Tokyo Game Show, Twinfinite interviewed Team Ninja president and Wo Long director Fumihiko Yasuda, and we had to ask him if we can still hope to see a new Ninja Gaiden one day.

Yasuda-san explained that this is a time in which Team Ninja is taking on many different challenges and trying new things, and players are perhaps looking at it and wondering when the new Ninja Gaiden will come out.

He’s aware of that and understands that. He’s listening to the fans and at some point, he wants to make a new Ninja Gaiden himself as well. It’s definitely something he wants to turn into a reality.

He hopes fans will be patient a bit longer and hopefully, good news will come. While there’s nothing else to say at this point, Yasuda-san would “definitely want to make a new Ninja Gaiden at some point.”

Incidentally, Yasuda-san is certainly no stranger to the Ninja Gaiden franchise. He worked as a level designer on Ninja Gaiden II, and directed Ninja Gaiden 3, Sigma 2, and 3: Razor’s Edge.

That would certainly be a great resume to bring into the development of a new Ninja Gaiden.

Yet, for now we have to wait and see.

Incidentally, if you feel yourself starving for some Ninja Gaiden before Team Ninja actually gets ariund making one, you could play the Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection, which realeased in2021 fir PS4, Xbox, PC, aad Nintendo Switch.

Skull and Bones Delayed to March 2023 to Ensure “Best Experience Possible”

1 year 7 months ago

In what has been a rather turbulent journey on the open seas, Skull and Bones will receive yet another delay. The news of the delay surfaced on the internet earlier this afternoon before Ubisoft officially confirmed the rumor in an official blog post. Skull and Bones will officially launch on March 9, 2023.

You can find the official announcement Tweet below.

Per the announcement, the delay comes from the development team looking to polish the game after receiving “invaluable feedback” received during the game’s technical test and insider program. Feedback noted, the team is looking to ensure fans get the “best experience” possible with a delay being a result of that desire. More insider program sessions are set to happen, and an open beta is scheduled in the near future to help iron out kinks before the new launch date.

Skull And Bones Delayed Again, This Time To March 2023

1 year 7 months ago

Skull and Bones has been delayed again, this time to March of next year.

It was originally due out in 2018 but then delayed to 2019. It was delayed to at least March 2020 after that, but things went quiet and the game missed that window. Then, in May of last year, Ubisoft announced that Skull and Bones would release sometime between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. And now, it's slipping out of its November 8 release date, which was only just announced back in July, into a new March 9, 2023 date. As for why, the team cites a need for more polish and balancing.

Kotaku's Ethan Gach says sources say the teams working on Skull and Bones are burnt out. According to Gach in his Kotaku story, the latest technical test for the game ended on September 19. One source involved with the test told Kotaku that gameplay was more refined than in previous tests but that progression needed work as it still felt too shallow. Gach writes that this is a concern shared by multiple sources close to the game's development.

Here's what Ubisoft has to say about the delay:

It is also to honor the late Kentaro Miura, who is the creator of the Berserk manga. He passed away in 2021 from an acute aortic dissection.

First look: Nvidia DLSS 3 - AI upscaling enters a new dimension

1 year 7 months ago

Two key PC technologies started to emerge towards the end of 2018 - hardware-accelerated ray tracing and machine learning based super-sampling. Forming the basis of Nvidia's brand change from GTX to RTX, the technologies have continued to be refined across the years. With the arrival of the new RTX 4000 graphics line, we have a new innovation in performance-boosting technology. DLSS 3 adds AI frame generation to its existing DLSS 2-based spatial upscaling. We've been putting the technology through its paces for the last ten days and we're impressed by the results.

Nvidia supplied us with a GeForce RTX 4090 ahead of time, along with incomplete preview builds of three DLSS 3-enabled titles: the path-traced Portal RTX, Marvel's Spider-Man and Cyberpunk 2077. The latter shouldn't be confused with the new RT Overdrive version and has more in common with the existing retail version, just with DLSS 3 added. Even running maxed, RTX 4090 and DLSS 3 allows these games to run nigh-on flawlessly on a 4K 120Hz screen. Nvidia is talking about DLSS 3 as an enabler for next generation experiences, showing its highly impressive Racer RTX, Portal RTX and the Overdrive RT version of Cyberpunk - which, believe it or not, is effectively a path-traced rendition of the game. Marvel's Spider-Man? Nvidia has shown a promotion video with RTX 4090 running the game at 200fps. Unfortunately, we are not able to show our own frame-rate numbers in this content - only performance multipliers.

It's seen three major maps: Verdansk, Rebirth and Caldera, sometimes awkward integration with Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, and crossovers with some of the biggest names in popular culture.

Brandon Sanderson Says Moonbreaker Collab Isn't Like George R. R. Martin and Elden Ring

1 year 7 months ago

Fantasy writers teaming up with game studios is seemingly on the rise – just ask Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, who famously partnered with From Software on Elden Ring. But writer Brandon Sanderson is doing things a bit differently than Martin and From when it comes to his partnership with Unknown Worlds on the upcoming Moonbreaker.

In an interview with IGN, we asked Sanderson, author of Mistborn and the Cosmere fictional universe, how he got involved with the creators of Subnautica on the digital miniatures game, and he said his collaboration with the team was more extensive than you might think.

According to Sanderson, Unknown Worlds approached him with the offer to help build an "optimistic" science-fantasy world for a game they had prototyped mechanically entirely with placeholder art from the studio's past games. Sanderson came back with two pitches, both of which he already developed on his own separately but didn't think were suitable for his existing Cosmere universe. Unknown Worlds chose the more ambitious of the two pitches, Moonbreaker, and a new partnership was born.
