What do you think of when you hear the words "Fighting Fantasy"? Do you remember being absorbed for hours as a child, hurriedly flipping pages and rolling dice, hoping you'd chosen the right path? Perhaps you talked about it with friends in the schoolyard, swapping strategies, comparing notes. You almost certainly remembered the deaths.

Whatever you remember of it, the effect the books had is undeniable. More than 20 million copies have been sold, making writers Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson best-selling authors, in addition to all of the other plaudits they've received. In fact, few people are as decorated in the games industry.

And this year, Fighting Fantasy turns 40 years old, just like me. And in celebration, two new books are being released: Shadow of the Giants, by Livingstone, and Secrets of Salamonis, by Jackson. And they're coming out today - Thursday, 1st September.

There were high expectations going into Buried Memory, patch 6.2 for Final Fantasy XIV - new raids, new story, and, most importantly, a new mode called Island Sanctuary to fulfil all of your farming dreams. Today was due to be the day when some older Ubisoft games would see their online services decommissioned, but the company is granting them a temporary reprieve. You now have until October 1st to cram in some multiplayer for several early Assassin’s Creeds, the original version of Far Cry 3, Driver: San Francisco and others. She-Hulk episode 3 featured a post-credits scene where we see Runa the Asgardian elf impersonating Megan Thee Stallion once again, but this time, she’s hired She-Hulk herself as her lawyer. The two of them bond pretty quickly as Runa signs her paperwork, and before we know it, the two start twerking in Jen’s office.

In an interview with The Direct, director Kat Coiro stated that it was actually actress Jameela Jamil’s idea to bring Megan Thee Stallion on to the project. The original script for this episode had featured some celebrity that “nobody in their right mind would believe would date Dennis Bukowski”, and Jamil suggested Stallion for the role as she’d worked with her before.

Things worked out perfectly as it turned out that Tatiana Maslany, who plays Jen Walters, is also a huge fan of Stallion. Coiro also went on to confirm that the twerking scene itself was improvised on the day of filming, and was meant to give Maslany a chance to dance with Stallion.

“And so, that’s another example of a scene that was written kind of on the day of them dancing and it was really to give Tatiana a chance to dance with Megan. And we were all surprised at how she could twerk with the rest of them…

Yes, Megan Thee Stallion is indeed in She-Hulk as a pretty funny cameo. In episode 3, Dennis Bukowski attempts to sue a shape-shifting elf from Asgard for impersonating Stallion and conning him into thinking he was dating the actual rapper, and he ended up spending $175,000 on her while they were going out.

During the episode, the elf takes on Stallion’s form in various scenes, including in a hilarious YouTube video where she’s exposed for being an Asgardian. She also shows up later in the episode, this time as her actual self.

After the end credits, she shows up once again as the elf impersonating her, and we see that she’s gotten She-Hulk to represent her in another case. It isn’t long before the two start twerking in her office. It’s unlikely that we’ll see her again in the series, but at least she made for a pretty fun cameo appearance in this episode.

UPDATE 5pm UK: Following this morning's leak, Ubisoft has now confirmed Assassin's Creed Mirage as the next title in its historical stabathon series.

Official artwork for Mirage shows, as expected, Valhalla character Basim in his younger days. This is the smaller, stealth-focused game which has been widely-reported on over the past few months.

Eurogamer reported earlier this year that Mirage would be set in Baghdad. As previously announced by Ubisoft, the future of Assassin's Creed - presumably including its next big chapter Infinity - will be detailed next weekend during the publisher's Ubisoft Forward livestream.

It’s Miku’s birthday, and Good Smile Company is celebrating with a scale figure of the 15th Anniversary Version of Hatsune Miku. Pre-orders are open from August 31 to October 13, 2022. The scale figure costs 43,329 JPY, or $309.99. She will come out in December 2023 for those in Japan, and February 2024 for those in North America.

The 15th Anniversary Version of Miku has a strawberry and spring theme. The base of the figure is a plate, which has a macaron on it as well. She holds in her hand a strawberry-themed fork, as well as a strawberry. Her long pigtails have flowers in the strands, and there are strawberry-themed ribbons near the ends. You cannot detach the fork from her body.

There is also a Nendoroid version that opened for pre-order on August 5, 2022. Pre-orders are available while supplies last. However, the North American Good Smile Company website notes that the pre-order period will end on October 12, 2022. The 15th Anniversary Hatsune Miku Nendoroid figure will come out in December 2022.

After growing in early access for two years, Ooblets finally sprouts in its 1.0 form today. The cheerful game blends monster collecting (the Ooblets), farming simulation, and light town management as you restore a wacky village to its former glory. Though an overall laid-back experience, there’s a lot of spinning plates involved, and it can take time to figure out how to maximize each day to keep your farm brimming with valuable crops, your roster full of different Ooblets, and your wallet stretched with Gummies (the game’s currency). That’s where I come in. I’ve spent many hours playing the final version of the game, and I’d like to offer some helpful tips to make your early hours in Badgetown as enjoyable and efficient as possible.

Keep A Variety Of Crops Growing At All Times

In addition to the Ooblets themselves, crops are essential to completing the game’s most important and lucrative tasks. You’ll always need a healthy variety of produce on hand because obtaining wild Ooblets requires players to have specific crops, or dishes made from them, to challenge them to dance battles, the game’s humorous take on combat. Other tasks, such as delivering bundles of certain fruits and vegetables, can earn nice chunks of change. 

Endnight Games' The Forest became one of my favorite co-op experiences almost two years after its launch. And when more Sons of the Forest footage was revealed the following year (2021), my excitement level reached an all-time high. Restoring your energy in Ooblets will ensure that you’re able to get more chores done within a single day in Badgetown, and that can be crucial if you’re trying to min-max your time in the game. Here’s what you need to know.

Restoring Energy in Ooblets

Restoring your energy in Ooblets can be done in one of two ways:

• By napping
• By consuming food items

At the start of the game, your energy bar will be pretty small, and it can feel very limiting especially since the game can be rather overwhelming at first. However, if you’ve been diligent about planting seeds, growing crops, and making food, you can get a lot done in a single day without wasting any time.

First off, the fastest and most efficient way of restoring energy is by eating food. You can eat raw food, such as Crumberries or Quibs that you get from shaking trees, but it’d be much better to eat cooked food that you’ve crafted yourself. With the crops you grow on the farm, you can use them to cook food with the stove in your home.

Ooblets on Switch

There’s a certain charm to farming and life sim games. There’s just something so incredibly appealing about living a quiet life somewhere, undisturbed, where you can tend to your crops, raise animals, and eventually become a self-sufficient produce monolith. Ooblets leans hard into that idea, bringing enough innovation and uniqueness to what should be a very predictable formula, and it should be lauded for that even if it does fall short in some aspects.

As the game starts, you learn that you’re playing a character who’s just moved to Badgetown. You’re finally leaving whatever backwater island you grew up on, and you know it’s backwater because they don’t even have any Ooblets where you’re from. After meeting a few of Badgetown’s residents and getting acquainted with the lovely Mayor Tinstle, your farm life begins.

Right off the bat, I was immediately surprised by how overwhelming Ooblets was. Most farming games tend to ease you into your new life, giving you a few freebie seeds to plant before showing you how to start raking in the cash. Ooblets isn’t very forthcoming in these early hours, and you’re immediately left to your own devices as you try to figure out how to make a living here.

Money, or Gummies as they’re referred to here, is extremely hard to come by in those early hours. Seeds are expensive, furniture is expensive, clothing is expensive, food is expensive, and your character’s energy bar is tiny. Everything in Badgetown is so damn expensive and when you’re too tired or weak to get a ton of work done in a day, making a living in Ooblets feels impossibly hard. Stardew Valley, this is not.

Netflix this, Disney+ that. All these streaming services, but no one ever talks about the ultimate underdog in the market: Apple TV+.

Most people would probably have heard of Mythic Quest and Ted Lasso by now and assume that those are the only two good shows on the platform. One of the challenge tasks that can pop up while you’re trying to expand the Wildlands in Ooblets requires you to get Mamoonia Ooblets. However, the game isn’t exactly very forthcoming about how exactly you can do that. That’s where we come in. Here’s what you need to know.

Getting Mamoonia Ooblets in Ooblets

If you have no idea what Mamoonia Ooblets are, it’s probably because you’re still pretty early in the game, and you haven’t even unlocked the new Mamoonia region yet. Here’s how you can unlock it:

There are plenty of little tasks for you to complete in Badgetown, and one of them is finally repairing Gimble’s hot air balloon so you can start traveling to different regions in Ooblets. Here’s how you can do that.

Repairing Gimble’s Hot Air Balloon in Ooblets

Gimble is located in the west side of town, and you’ll notice him standing next to a deflated hot air balloon when you’re out exploring. There is indeed a way to repair the balloon, but you might have to wait a little while.

In order to repair it, you’ll first need to complete three tasks for Mayor Tinstle. You can check your Tinstle tasks at the town hall, but the first three should be pretty easy to knock out. Once you’ve done so, a new Tinstle task will pop up, asking you to restore power to the Oobnet tower.

Head to the Oobnet tower on the northwest side of town, then challenge the Ooblets there to a dance battle and win. After doing so, you’ll unlock a new Tinstle task for repairing Gimble’s hot air balloon.

Winning dance-offs against other NPCs and random Ooblets you find in the wild is one of the main ways for you to expand your little creature collection. With that in mind, here’s how to win dance battles in Ooblets.

Winning Dance Battles in Ooblets

First off, some dance-offs are unmissable as you’ll have to take part in them as you unlock more areas to explore and more NPCs to meet. However, if you want to battle wild Ooblets in the city, you’ll need to have enough resources to do so.

Some Ooblets require you to give them four planklets for instance, while others simply want an Oodle. The requirement will pop up when you interact with them, so try to get your resources on hand before starting a battle. Once you have everything you need, press the A button to start dancing.

Here are some key strategies to keep in mind while dancing:

• Increase your Hype wherever possible.
• Increase the opponent’s Fluster as much as you can.
• Save your steal moves for emergencies.
• Add Trepidation cards to your opponent’s deck whenever you feel like you’re even or if they’re in the lead.

Dance battles in Ooblets function similarly to turn-based battles in traditional RPGs, but with a bit of a twist. In order to win a battle, you need to hit a certain number of points before your opponent does. At the start of each turn, you’ll have a selection of random cards in your hand. Dance moves will give you points, but you can also play cards that give you a beat or increase your Hype.

Ooblets 1.0 is finally here, allowing players to collect tons of adorable little minions to help them out with farm labor. You’ll need to look good while doing so of course, so here’s how to change clothes and get more outfits in Ooblets.

Changing Clothes in Ooblets

While Ooblets does exude a lot of charm, it’s also not very good at actually telling players how to do things. To change your outfit in Ooblets, you’ll need to press the X button to bring up your menu, use the left stick to access the options on the left side of the page, then select the option that says Clothing.

Sci-fi monster movies can sometimes feel like they’re a dime a dozen, but the reality is, digging up a good one that you’ve never heard of before can often feel like finding a bountiful treasure trove of pure, unadulterated entertainment. Case in point: an underappreciated sci-fi creature feature is currently making waves on streaming charts, and it’s likely that you’ve not heard of it before.

The specific film in question is 2010’s lo-fi cult hit Monsters, which has come out of nowhere to nab the fifth spot on Hulu’s most-watched movies list today, according to FlixPatrol. It’s even managed to edge out box office behemoth Spider-Man: No Way Home, which lands on the platform’s sixth spot. Most impressive!

Interestingly, Monsters marks Gareth Edwards’ directorial debut. For those unaware, Edwards is the British filmmaker behind 2014’s Godzilla pic starring Bryan Cranston, and 2016’s critically acclaimed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Forest Whittaker, and Mads Mikkelson.

Microsoft and Activision’s record $69 billion upcoming merger has raised concerns in the UK over fair competition and will be investigated by its regulatory board, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The pending deal, which is set to be the largest in video game industry history, will give Microsoft control of popular game franchises such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, potentially harming their competitors in the process. This is despite Microsoft’s recent pledge during an investor call that it would continue to keep releasing major franchises on PlayStation and other platforms.

“Following our Phase 1 investigation, we are concerned that Microsoft could use its control over popular games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft post-merger to harm rivals, including recent and future rivals in multi-game subscription services and cloud gaming,” CMA’s senior director of mergers, Sorcha O’Carroll, said in a press release.

She went on to highlight that “If our current concerns are not addressed, we plan to explore this deal in an in-depth Phase 2 investigation to reach a decision that works in the interests of UK gamers and businesses.”

The CMA has given Microsoft 5 working days to offer proposals as a solution to their concerns, after which time if a satisfactory response has not been given then it will launch Phase 2 of its investigation. This will see an independent panel further investigate.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has issued a new blog post detailing plans for Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard franchises, following today's announcement from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority that it will scrutinise the deal in detail.

As you would expect, Call of Duty, Overwatch and Diablo will be made available via Xbox Game Pass, Spencer said, if and when Microsoft's $68bn buyout of Activision Blizzard is completed.

Spencer also made the guarantee that Xbox was "committed to making the same version of Call of Duty available on PlayStation on the same day the game launches elsewhere".

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has concluded its initial investigation of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, making the decision that the deal requires a more in-depth "phase 2" investigation.

In its report, the CMA has determined that the deal will be "giving rise to a realistic prospect of a substantial lessening of competition in gaming consoles, multi-game subscription services, and cloud gaming services."

Crucially, the CMA decided the deal would have a large impact on the success of rival platforms: "Evidence consistently pointed towards ABK's content, especially Call of Duty, as being important and capable of making a material difference to the success of rivals' gaming platforms."

A new trailer for Tchia has been released, giving us a closer look at the game's tropical, New Caledonia-inspired setting.

This trailer is narrated by the game's director, Phil Crifo, and takes us from the island's high peaks to the bottom of its azure ocean. Along the way, we are shown various methods of getting around the island in action. This includes things such as Tchia catapulting herself from the tops of trees and then gliding her way through the sky.

We also get another look at the game's soul-jumping ability, which allows Tchia to quickly hop into the body of almost any animal or inanimate object she can find. This proves useful when she comes across the Maano, the game's "strange fabric creatures" that have invaded Tchia's home. In this case, she becomes a lantern, before later on becoming a coconut.
