Advertising Standards Authority acts on sexist mobile phone ads

1 year 7 months ago

The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has found several mobile phone game adverts likely to cause "serious or widespread offence" due to harmful gender stereotypes.

An advert for one game, Refantasia: Charm and Conquer, is described as having featured an "anime-style image of a young woman in a cage" in shackles and with torn clothing, which was singled out for particular criticism.

Captions referenced "my master" and were accompanied by text which described the person as a "little girl". The ASA judged the character as being someone under 18 represented in a sexual manner.

Infinity Ward Promises to Improve Modern Warfare 2's Footstep Audio and Enemy Visibility Following Open Beta

1 year 7 months ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will balance that footstep audio before its official launch.

According to a post-beta statement from developer Infinity Ward, the upcoming Modern Warfare sequel will be getting a few tweaks before it launches.

“While sentiment around footstep audio was more positive in Beta Weekend Two, we have seen your continued feedback on the volume of footsteps and will continue to balance enemy/friendly footstep audio ahead of launch,” it confirmed.

Additionally, it looks as though enemy visibility will be balanced, too.

“Enemy visibility is something that came up throughout both weekends of our Beta,” said Infinity Ward. “While many of you remarked on the improvement in Weekend Two, we’ll look to tweak increased enemy visibility to allow for better visual tracking of opponents that is not solely the traditional nameplate.”

Quite what this means for the final game remains to be seen. But footstep audio and enemy visibility aren’t the only issues being addressed before the game debuts on October 28, 2022.

“Disbanding lobbies are another topic we addressed during Beta,” it said. “We feel this is an important feature and are actively looking for potential solutions for launch.”

Infinity Ward also stated that it's “very happy” with the results of weapon tuning during the first open beta weekend, but further changes are still coming.

New Overwatch 2 Players Will Need to Play 100 Matches to Unlock Original Characters

1 year 7 months ago

New Overwatch 2 players won’t be able to use classic Overwatch heroes straight away.

A new blog post over at the Overwatch website has revealed that new players will need to grind out around 100 matches to unlock the complete roster of original Overwatch 1 characters.

“New players begin with access to a limited set of game modes, heroes, and some other restrictions to onboard them more gradually,” they revealed. “The first phase of our new [First Time User Experience] rapidly unlocks all the game modes and the ability to chat in-game, and the second phase unlocks all the original Overwatch heroes over the course of approximately 100 matches.”

The idea behind the move is to prevent overwhelming new players with too much to learn. Considering each hero has a unique set of abilities and counters, this is certainly an understandable and structured way to get into the game.

“This focused experience eases new players into the world of Overwatch by teaching them about different modes, rules, and other high-level aspects of the game in an approachable way.,” they said.

Importantly, these restrictions won’t be in place if you’re in a group, so new players can still team up with their friends and try out heroes (and game modes) they don’t have yet. “Competitive is the exception to this rule because new players must complete a specific challenge to access this game mode.”

While this move could be seen as controversial, it looks as though the Overwatch community is pretty pleased with the change.

7 Unforgettable Halo 3 Moments to Celebrate its 15th Anniversary

1 year 7 months ago

It’s hard to believe Halo 3 is 15 years old. After Halo 2 ended on one of the most disappointing cliffhangers of all time, Halo 3 had big shoes to fill. Thankfully, Halo 3 lived up to all the hype and then some. It’s still considered the best installment in the franchise, thanks to its epic single-player and multiplayer that few can match, and it became the biggest game of that year, selling over 14.5 million copies. Back then, everyone, from the gaming news press to the general mainstream media, talked non-stop about Halo 3.

With such an iconic game, we decided it would be best to look back at some of Halo 3’s most iconic moments. From its pulse-pounding opening to the grand conclusion to even some smaller moments, we left no stone unturned for this beloved shooter.

There’s Something Fishy About Li’l Judd in Splatoon 3

1 year 7 months ago

SPOILER WARNING: The content below contains spoilers for Splatoon 3’s story mode. Proceed at your own risk!

If you’re a casual fan of the Splatoon franchise, you might be surprised to learn that the game’s lore runs deep. From Sunken Scrolls and character dialogue in story mode to tidbits of canonical information in official art books, the story of Splatoon is actually quite complex.

Splatoon 2’s paid DLC, Octo Expansion, supplemented the base game with a unique and somewhat dark storyline. We already know that “large-scale paid DLC” is planned for Splatoon 3, and I believe we have enough evidence at this point to guess what the narrative this time will be about.

It all centers around an unexpected character: Li’l Judd. There’s something fishy about him in Splatoon 3, and I believe he will be a central antagonist in the game’s DLC.

How to Complete Around the World SBC in FIFA 23

1 year 7 months ago

FIFA 23 is near, but as always EA Sports allows for their players to get a little bit of a jump on things by releasing their web and mobile companion apps a few days prior to launch. With that comes the release of several FUT SBCs, and in this guide, we’re going to tell you what it takes to complete the Around the World SBC in FIFA 23.

FIFA 23 Around the World SBC Guide

As is quite often the case, Hybrid Leagues, Hybrid Nations, and League & Nation Hybrid SBCs are available essentially from the get-go. Unfortunately, this year EA has decided to make every single one of their rewards untradeable. Still, the Around the World SBC does offer a Rare Mega Pack as its reward. So, it may be worth checking out regardless.

Overwatch 2: It Will Take New Players About 100 Matches To Unlock All Original Heroes

1 year 7 months ago

Overwatch 2 unlocking original heroes new players

Overwatch 2 players new to the series will have to unlock the original characters, meaning that cast won't be available on day one.

This news comes from a new Overwatch 2 blog post, as reported by Destructoid. In it, Blizzard says a consistent piece of feedback it has received is that new players feel overwhelmed by Overwatch's hero pool and various modes. As such, the team has implemented a new First Time User Experience, or FTUE, designed for Overwatch 2 players who have never played Overwatch.

The new FTUE addresses that feedback directly. In phase one, players will need to unlock the game's modes and chat functions – this happens "rapidly," Blizzard writes in the blog post. Then, in phase two, players will unlock the original Overwatch heroes by playing "approximately 100 matches," according to Destructoid. It's important to note this is just for the original game's heroes – new heroes will be unlocked through Overwatch 2's battle pass system

Wiglett Is A New Diglett-Like Pokémon Coming To Scarlet And Violet

1 year 7 months ago

wiglett new Pokemon scarlet and violet trailer

There are Pokémon designs like Charizard that make me go, "ooo yes, very nice" and there are others like Voltorb that make me go, "oh, why do you exist?" There's also a rare third class of Pokémon I call "weird lil things" when I see them and Wiglett, a new Pokémon joining the Pokédex in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, is that class' newest member.

Today, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company released a 3 and a half minute video highlighting Wiglett, its similarities to Diglett, and how it's just different enough that it is an entirely new species, rather than a regional variant. As such, this new Diglett-like Pokémon is called Wiglett. It looks like a worm, lives in the sea and on the beach, and seems to stick together with other Wigletts. Check it out in Serebii's video below:

I'm most excited to see Wiglett's evolution, if it evolves at all. But hopefully, I'll see that in another trainer's party because I'm not sure Wiglett is a sure bet for mine.

Trails of Cold Steel’s Altina Will Have an Official Fan-Voted Dakimakura

1 year 7 months ago

Trails of Cold Steel IV Altina Orion wedding party dress won official dakimakura poll

The Trails of Cold Steel series character Altina Orion will have a new dakimakura cover based on an official fan poll. Fuji Dakimakura has opened pre-orders for the body pillow cover that will be available at 13,800 yen (~$95). The game series' publisher Nihon Falcom is also supervising the character designs on the cover.

This is not the first time Altina has received an official dakimakura. Falcom and Fuji have previously worked together to produce the character's first pillow cover in 2017. However, the design was entirely based on Trails of Cold Steel III without any fan input.

The companies held a poll asking fans about their favorite attire for Altina Orion from May 31 to June 7, 2022. The top two choices, which will appear in the new dakimakura, were the wedding party dress from Trails of Cold Steel IV and the black rabbit costume from Trails of Cold Steel II.

Pre-orders for the new Altina Orion dakimakura cover will remain open until November 8, 2022. All items will be made to order, and Fuji Dakimakura will ship them in December 2022. The company has stated that this item is only available to order exclusively in Japan.

Fuji Dakimakura has also shared an uncolored sample of the new pillow cover modeled after Altina Orion.

KOF XV DLC Samurai Shodown

The new DLC will arrive on October 4, 2022. Additionally, SNK released an introduction trailer for the characters. [Thanks, ryokutya!]

Team Samurai consists of characters new and old to the franchise. Haohmaru, a ronin modeled after legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, first appeared in the original Samurai Shodown released in 1993. Nakoruru, a character with designs inspired by Ainu culture, also appeared in the original game as well as the previous King of Fighters XIV. The 2019 prequel Samurai Shodown introduced Darli Dagger, a shipwright who wields a giant saw.

RPS Time Capsule: the games worth saving from 2011

1 year 7 months ago

It's been a hot minute since we last gathered round the RPS Time Capsule vault (thanks, Gamescom), but at long last we have returned with another cracking year of PC games to preserve: 2011. In hindsight, it's a bit of an interesting year for Time Capsuling purposes, as we're now getting to the point where games from this era are getting their own remakes and remasters, or fancier, super duper director's cut special editions. We've included the original 2011 release of one of these games in this month's Time Capsule, but there's another notable exception we've decided to save for further down the line. I mean, seriously, would you really recommend vanilla Skyrim from 2011 over 2016's Special Edition?

Low-intensity action platformer Itorah is hard to put down

1 year 7 months ago

There's a definition of "pure" that's proscriptive; a dogmatic adherence to surface details and strict rituals. I'm genuinely not thinking of any specific game, but many 'retro' inspired games fall into this way of thinking, and many more fans cut a good one down because of it.

Itorah, however, feels pure in the sense of capturing the essence, the heart of a good retro platformer, not just going through the motions to technically qualify for an arbitrary category. Aeons ago, it would have ported comfortably to your GameBoys and gramophones, and probably look just as pretty and feel just as good in motion, judging by the talented art direction on show here.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers - The Final Preview

1 year 7 months ago

I admit that I initially found the idea of an asymmetrical, Dead By Daylight-inspired multiplayer game based on the Dragon Ball universe to be a bit absurd. I had so many questions as to how it would work, what it would look like, and if it could stand out as its own experience that isn’t carried by its very famous name.

After learning more about the ins and outs of Dragon Ball: The Breakers’ minute to minute gameplay while playing it for myself, the answer to that is complicated. While there are plenty of different strategic options to try and win with when you’re a survivor, there is a lot more required than general gameplay at face value to secure a victory.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a 1vs7 multiplayer game where seven civilians are trying to survive a “raider” who is trying to destroy the entire map. The raiders that you can play as are well-known villains from the Dragon Ball universe like Frieza and Cell. The raiders’ objective is simple—kill all the survivors. Each raider begins in their base form with the ability to evolve into stronger ones after meeting specific requirements. Once evolved, the raider can destroy a section of the map, thus giving survivors less freedom to explore. Each raider has abilities that their characters are known for from the universe including the Special Beam Cannon and Perfect Kamehameha

Age of Empires Anniversary Stream Will Include Announcements and 'Some Surprises'

1 year 7 months ago

With the 25th anniversary of Age of Empires fast approaching, Xbox Game Studios and Relic Entertainment have announced a special anniversary stream timed to roughly coincide with the big day.

Set for October 25 at 10am PT, the anniversary broadcast will feature announcements, interviews, and "some surprises." It will be hosted on Twitch along with the main Age of Empires and Xbox YouTube channels.

In addition, Xbox has announced a special Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition for Steam and the Microsoft Store. The new release will feature all of the previous updates along with the new Anniversary Update, which will include the Ottoman and Malian civilizations.

First released last year, Age of Empires IV is a major revival for the venerable RTS series. While it "plays it safe a bit too often" according to our review, it "really excels when it wanders outside of its very traditional comfort zone." The original series, meanwhile, got its start way back in 1997.

The stream will celebrate all of Age of Empire's long history while potentially including a few announcements. As for Age of Empires IV Anniversary Edition, it will also release on October 25 on Steam, Windows, and PC Game Pass.

Wild Hearts Interview: Magical Building, Open Worlds, and Why It's Out So Soon

1 year 7 months ago

Wild Hearts is EA and Koei Tecmo's answer to Monster Hunter, a familiar mixture of fantasy combat and gigantic boss beasts – with some less familiar magical building and trap-setting thrown in.

Out as soon as February 17, it's been a bit of a surprise for fans of both Omega Force and Monster Hunter-like games, and there's a lot still to learn, even after we got a look at the first trailer. Thankfully, we got an exclusive interview with two of Koei Tecmo's directors, Kotaro Hirata and Takuto Edagawa.

We asked why the Dynasty Warriors developer is making a new monster hunting game (again), whether it's an open world, if that building system is meant to resemble Fortnite, and much more.

IGN: Omega Force is best known for its Musou/Warriors games, but this looks like a big departure from that approach. What was the spark of an idea for Wild Hearts?

Kotaro Hirata: This project began as an attempt to create a Japanese-style hunting game that a new generation of players around the world could have fun with. It was informed by our experience developing hunting games, specifically the Toukiden series.

New Hunting Game Wild Hearts Announced by Koei Tecmo & Electronic Arts

1 year 7 months ago

Today Electronic Arts and Koei Tecmo announced a partnership for the release of a new hunting action game named Wild Hearts.

The game will release on February 17, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Origin, Steam, and Epic Game Store.

Today we get to see a trailer and a gallery of screenshots, but an extended gameplay reveal is coming October 5.

The game wears its Japanese inspiration on the sleeve with a world inspired by feudal Japan named Azuma. Even the beasts you’re going to hunt are named “Kemono” which literally means “beast” in Japanese.

It’s developed by Omega Force, Koei Tecmo’s brand known for the Warriors franchise. That being said, you’d be wrong if you thought this is their first experience in the hunting genre. Omega Force started with it all the way back in 2013 with Toukiden: The Age of Demons, followed by Tiukiden 2 in 2016.

Wild Hearts feature unique crafting mechanics focusing on machines named Karakuri, sophisticated machines fruit of ancient technology,

Three-player co-op will be supported alongside cross-play on all platforms.

The game will feature full voice overs in English, Japanese, French, Italian, German and Spanish and it’ll be priced at $69.99.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Reveals New Paldean Pokemon “Wiglett”

1 year 7 months ago

Today the Pokemon Company revealed a brand new pokemon that should appear in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Its name is “Wiglett” and it was revealed on the website of the fictional World Pokemon Ecological Society.

You can see the video used for the reveal at the bottom of the post, courtesy of YouTube user 키젠 Keyzen.

We learn that Wiglett lives in the seas and beaches on of the Paldean region and looks somewhat similar to Diglett, and in fact researchers initially believed it to be a local form of Diglett itself, but they live and eat completely differently, so they’re an entirely different species.

It’s actually a coincidence that their bodies look close, due to the fact that they both burrow in the sand, leading to similar body shapes.

If you’re wondering about the different voices and languages in the video, they represent different Pokemon researchers from all over the world. That’s kind of the gimmick of the World Pokemon Ecological Society.

If you want to see the video on the original form, you need to press the big yellow button at the bottom, insert your nickname, give (or deny) permission to use your webcam and microphone, and then press the next yellow button-

You can watch the video below.
