When Does Overwatch 1 Shut Down? Answered

1 year 7 months ago

We’ve all known for a few months that the first Overwatch will disappear completely and morph into the new Overwatch 2. Considering players are going to be losing access to a game they have been playing for the last six years, there is plenty of wondering about when exactly the first Overwatch will be gone. We’ve got all the info you want for when Overwatch 1 will be shutting down.

When Will Overwatch 1 Shut Down

The last day for all players to experience Overwatch 1 will be Oct. 1. After that, the Overwatch 1 servers will be taken offline on Oct. 2 to begin the Overwatch 2 transition for the Oct. 4 launch.

We repeat: This upcoming Saturday will be your last day to play Overwatch 1 before it becomes the free-to-play sequel.

On the bright side, you aren’t necessarily losing access to anything in your inventory. All cosmetics (character skins, player icons, etc.) will be making the transition to Overwatch 2. Overwatch 1 isn’t getting a full deletion, more like a merge into the sequel.

That is everything there is to know regarding when Overwatch 1 will be shutting down. Be sure to stick around as we will keep you up to date with any further developments in the last several days of Overwatch 1.

AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT review: a last hurrah for RDNA 2

1 year 7 months ago

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT's concept – faster clock speeds than the RX 6600 XT, to better compete with Nvidia’s RTX cards? Yeah why not – but surely its timing is questionable. Any GPU launching several months into 2022 would only ever do so under the looming shadows of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40 series and the AMD Radeon RX 7000 series, the latter being officially revealed in just a few days’ time. Not to mention Intel Arc Alchemist, delayed as it has been.

Still. AMD’s next-gen, RDNA 3-based GPUs are an unknown quantity, and the RTX 40 series will at first focus on high-end models like the RTX 4090. Even if its RDNA 2 architecture is on the way out, could the RX 6650 XT not find room in the pack as one of the best graphics cards for 1080p and 1440p?

Team Ninja Would Outsource a New Ninja Gaiden Game, But Only If It Would 'Exceed Expectations'

1 year 7 months ago

Team Ninja says that it is open to outsourcing its own IP, such as Ninja Gaiden, to other studios as long as the game being developed is able to exceed fan expectations.

In an interview with VGC, Team Ninja's Fumihiko Yasuda - director of upcoming Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - said, “If we were to theoretically work with another company on a new Ninja Gaiden title, we would need to make sure that it would be a title that the fans would really enjoy and exceed their expectations.”

Yasuda explained that even though there is a big fanbase for existing IP like Ninja Gaiden, Team Ninja needs to balance its resources within the studio, including seeing what kind of skills members of the development team currently have. From there, they would decide if those skills could fit an existing IP, or perhaps an entirely new one.

He is also open to handing off a potential new Ninja Gaiden game to a team of younger developers within Team Ninja. However, either decision wouldn’t be made lightly. “It’s not just a matter of, ‘hey, let’s just go do this.’ All the pieces would need to fit, and it would need to be the right team…either a younger team internally or another company that would really need to fit the Ninja Gaiden pedigree,” Yasuda explained.

Team Ninja is understandably cautious about such an idea. The last time Ninja Gaiden was outsourced - 2014's Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, made by Californian studio Spark Unlimited - the series was tarnished with poor reviews, including a 5.6 from IGN.

Overwatch 2 Boss Interested in Exploring Fortnite-Style Brand Crossovers

1 year 7 months ago

Overwatch’s Commercial Leader and Vice President, Jon Spector, has said that he is interested in exploring brand crossovers similar to those seen in Fortnite with Overwatch 2.

Talking to Game Informer, Spector said: "I'm a big anime nerd myself. I think it's super cool when I see Naruto appear in Fortnite. I don't even play Fortnite, but that's awesome. And as we look at the Overwatch 2 space, those are things that we're interested in exploring. If and when we do that, one of our key values is to do it in a way that feels like a great fit for the Overwatch franchise."

Spector added that Blizzard is less interested in displaying adverts in Overwatch 2 in order to fund its transition to free-to-play. The main generator of revenue will be premium-priced battle passes and cosmetics, which in Season 1 of Overwatch 2 will be cyberpunk-themed.

E3 Returns in June 2023

1 year 7 months ago

E3 2023

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) isn't dead. In fact, it'll be back next year, according to the latest word from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). E3 2023 will be the first in-person show held since 2019. E3 2023 will return on June 13 to 16, 2023. This new schedule puts just under nine months from now to the planned date. Prior to the disruptions of 2019 and beyond, E3 was one of the world's largest video game industry events. Alongside events like Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show (which both returned to in-person hosting in 2022), E3 was a major avenue for announcements from the industry's biggest presences [Thanks, VentureBeat!].

E3 2020 was cancelled due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Those same concerns caused it to go fully online for E3 2021. The ESA cited COVID-19 concerns again when it cancelled both the digital and physical E3 2022 shows, but some commentators suggested that the decision was made some time before.

PowerWash Simulator developer diary discusses cleanliness thresholds, dirt design

1 year 7 months ago

It's no secret we're big fans of PowerWash Simulator here at Eurogamer which, for me, makes this hour-long development deep dive video something of a must-watch.

I've often wondered while playing whether certain objects auto-complete faster than others. If you're yet to try PowerWash yourself, it's worth knowing the game will, after you clean a certain amount of surface area, auto-complete the rest of the object in question. (This also provides a nice 'ding' sound.)

This subject is one of many covered in the developer video, which is ostensibly about how levels in the game are created but also delves into thoughts on dirt design, parkour, and the game's lack of fall damage.

A Plague Tale: Requiem Story Trailer Will Trigger Your Musophobia

1 year 7 months ago

Musophobia is a fear of rats and mice, and A Plague Tale: Requiem seeks to once again trigger it. If you’re familiar with A Plague Tale: Innocence you know that the world in the game is being entirely overcome with rats carrying a plague. The new game once again has players journey as Amicia alongside her brother Hugo as they aim to escape the spreading rats. Only, Hugo seems to be holding a very dark curse.

Watch the trailer for yourself, if you can stand to look at the pretty horrifying swarms of rats.

A press release we received accompanying the new trailer describes the story as:

As Amicia and Hugo set out to find a mysterious island in the hope of ending the curse which runs through Hugo’s blood, they find themselves having to rely on the help of the people they meet. Walking into foreign territory, the young de Runes are unlikely to make it alone… but how much trust can they place in strangers? The answer seems as uncertain as the island is beautiful and terrifying.

Moonscars is too punishing for my blood

1 year 7 months ago

I had hoped to bring you a proper review of Moonscars today, the new 2D Soulslike from indie studio Black Mermaid. But alas, both time and its ferociously difficult combat have got the better of me, so you'll have to settle for some impressions instead. This isn’t simply a case of drinking the 'git gud' kool-aid either. While I'll hold my hands up now and say that Soulslikes have always been a bit of a challenge for me, I feel like I've been making some pretty good in-roads into the genre lately, and after falling in love with Moonscars' reveal trailer earlier in the year during the Humble Games Showcase, I really, really, really wanted to like this one. Sadly, it's become increasingly clear that Moonscars does not like me very much, and maybe even hates my guts a bit - which is ironic, considering how many organs I've chucked at its feet over the last week and a bit to appease its hungry dread moon.

Sega Announces Partnership to Develop new Sangokushi Taisen Game

1 year 7 months ago

Sega Blockchain Sangokushi Taisen

Sega announced a new partnership with Japan-based blockchain firm double jump tokyo, which has begun development on a new Sangokushi Taisen blockchain game. Once completed, the game will likely be the first Sega property that uses blockchain technology. There is no confirmed release date or platform. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

double jump tokyo will handle the development of the game, with Sega providing the Sangokushi Taisen license. The game will utilize double jump's new "Oasys" blockchain project. Originally unveiled in February 2022, the Oasys architecture is reportedly built to support blockchain games. The official Oasys website states that the architecture also supports the trading of NFTs and claims it is "eco-friendly". Ethereum, one of the primary blockchains supporting NFT-based projects, recently completed a switch to "Proof-of-Stake", a verification mechanism that is said to dramatically reduce the energy costs to maintain the blockchain. One of the major objections to blockchain-based technology is that the favored mechanism for maintaining it, "Proof-of-Work" , deliberately consumed large amounts of energy through "mining" activity. Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency system, still uses Proof-of-Work.

Northgard: Uncharted Lands Board Game Review

1 year 7 months ago

Northgard the video game came out a few years ago to much acclaim. It uses the concepts of '90s real-time strategy classics such as Age of Empires and The Settlers, alongside a slick modern sandbox approach. Players control viking warbands to construct villages and accomplish great tasks. They are incentivized to pursue bigger and mightier feats to amass fame, such as slaying beasts and crushing opposing players. Now, this RTS/adventure game hybrid has received a passionate and evocative board game adaptation titled Northgard: Uncharted Lands (see it on Amazon).

Very much to its credit, this tabletop game stands comfortably alongside its digital predecessor, as well as independently on its own merit. Fans of the video game will detect the inspiration lovingly spread throughout its various cards, miniatures, and tiles.

Designer Adrian Dinu has crafted a standout board game that combines well-established systems with a fresh vision. One needs no familiarity with the original Northgard to enjoy this adventure, as its primary connection is in abstracting the core themes of exploration and scarcity.

As you control one of the asymmetric clans, you'll focus on both exploring the new continent and developing its lands. Tiles reveal the vast countryside randomly in a process that mimics the procedural generation of its peer. You will bump into other players and discover wild fauna, encounters often leading to outright conflict. It’s a violent and surprisingly thoughtful experience that feels right at home on the tabletop.

Here’s Trombone Champ Being Played With a Custom Trombone Controller

1 year 7 months ago

Gaming Twitter belongs to Trombone Champ right now, with tons of videos floating around of people trying (and usually hilariously failing) to play the wacky rhythm game.

If you haven't heard of it, Trombone Champ is a new PC game where you play classical tunes on the trombone, using your mouse or controller to adjust the pitch of the note your Mii-like avatar is playing. If you're even the slightest bit off with your note placement, the note will sound either sharp or flat, just like a real trombone. Unlike other rhythm games that only expect you to hit five buttons to sound like a rockstar, Trombone Champ's hilarity comes from its extreme requirements of precision.

Now, as these things usually tend to go, some folks are coming up with new controller methods to play the game. On Twitter, Rudeism has made Trombone Champ playable with an actual trombone. In the video below, you can watch as Rudeism plays Trombone Champ with a plastic trombone, where an ultrasonic sensor controls the slide, and a microphone controls the dooting.

Overwatch 2's new player accounts will be limited to fight "disruptive behaviour"

Overwatch 2 differs from its predecessor by being free-to-play, which means it will be more vulnerable to players who are up to no good. Blizzard today outlined how they intend to prevent "disruptive behaviour" from players, including the use of SMS verification and machine learning. More awkwardly, game modes will be locked for first-time players, and Overwatch 1's original heroes will only be unlocked "over the course of approximately 100 matches."
