ElecHead review - a more than clever platformer

2 years 7 months ago

Games are good these days aren't they? What a nice state of affairs. Sadly, it means that if I was to say that ElecHead is a supremely smart platforming puzzle game, you might be a little underwhelmed. Games are so good these days! You probably have hundreds of supremely smart platforming puzzle games you can pick from. Many, like ElecHead, will use a simple idea explored in a range of ingenious ways. Many, like ElecHead, will come from teams of one or two people toiling brilliantly on projects they're passionate about. So what makes ElecHead truly special? I feel that it is, but I can't yet put it into words. Let's talk about it and see what happens.

In ElecHead, you play a dinky little robot whose head carries an electrical charge. Stand on a metal platform and the platform shares your charge. This means in visual terms that it lights up a certain colour, and so does everything else connected to it - nice and clear, no misreading the situation. In mechanical terms, it means that anything connected to that platform requiring electricity starts to work: platforms start to move, blocks that are ghosted out suddenly pop back to life, machinery starts to do its machinery thing. As long as you're connected to the platform, it will run.

Lost PS4 Exclusive Confirmed to Return, Developer Regains Rights in Rare Deal with Sony

2 years 7 months ago

Five years after its October 2016 release as a free-to-play game on PS4 and subsequent shutdown 13 months later, The Tomorrow Children is set to return. Q-Games, the Kyoto-based indie developer behind the game, has acquired the rights from publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment, returning the Tomorrow Children IP to creator Dylan Cuthbert and his team.

During a rare private server gameplay video in September 2021, Q-Games CEO and founder Cuthbert told IGN Japan that he hoped to acquire the rights and re-release The Tomorrow Children if Sony would allow it. A small-but-vocal audience has called for its return since public servers were closed in November 2017, rendering the game unplayable, and Cuthbert says it was this dedication from fans that convinced him to pursue negotiations with Sony over the rights.

“I’d like to thank first and foremost the fans of The Tomorrow Children, without whom I would never have had the confidence to keep pursuing this deal,” Cuthbert said in an announcement today. “Our fans are some of the most amazing gamers out there, and every day for the past four years they have kept the dream alive. I think the happiest thing about this decision is imagining the enjoyment those fans will feel as they re-enter the crazy post-apocalyptic neo-soviet world of The Tomorrow Children.

“Secondly I’d like to thank Sony Interactive Entertainment for also working with me to have the IP returned to Q-Games. It has taken a concerted effort by all of us to get to this ultimate step, and I’m full of gratitude to everyone involved in the process.”

To be more specific, you can win one of five bundles including a Chris Redfield figure, a cloth map, and an artbook.

It’s relevant to mention that the prize does not include the rest of the collector’s edition (The game itself, the special box, the steelbook, and the Trauma Pack code), what you see in the gallery at the bottom of the post is what you get.

Important: due to shipping agreements, this giveaway is open only to residents in the United States excluding Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico. We apologize if you can’t participate, but there will be more giveaways for everyone soon.

The way to get involved is really, really easy.

Off Topic: The Flavour Thesaurus takes food beyond the infinite

2 years 7 months ago

"No wonder it's hard to stop grazing on avocados: they taste like grass and have the texture of butter."

In 2010, Niki Segnit published The Flavour Thesaurus, a compact and distinctly durable hardback that does exactly what the title suggests it will. It puts flavours together and explains what the most harmonious combinations create. The book is a beauty, silvery board covers and fore-edges stained the warm, watercolour pink of Dragonfruit skin, a tone wheel that is actually a flavour wheel directing your eye. The whole thing's pretty but also hardy - a tool at heart, a book to withstand spattering from the hob.

Tiger & Bunny Part 1 & 2 Are Coming to Netflix in April 2022

2 years 7 months ago

It has been a long time coming, but we are finally going to get more Tiger & Bunny in 2022. To make things even sweeter, Netflix is swooping in with the announcement that both Tiger & Bunny Part 1 and 2 will be heading to the streaming service in April next year.

The news comes via an announcement at Netflix Festival Japan that is currently underway in the land of the rising sun. In addition to the great news, fans are also treated to promotional art starring the pair of Kotetsu T. Kubaragi and Barnaby Brooks Jr, as well as their alter-egos, Wild Tiger and Bunny.

First arriving on the anime scene back in 2011, the two heroes join forces in a bid to climb the ranks and be crowned the best heroes in the world. There is also the small matter of tracking down the murderers of Barnaby’s parents, which provides a nice complement to the heroic stuff.

With differing views on how heroes should function in a society, the partnership between the pair will get a sterner examination in Tiger & Bunny Part 2 on Netflix, especially as they face down super-powered villains on their journey.

You can take a look a look at the full tweet and promotional art down below:

Activision Drops Image of Call of Duty: Warzone New Caldera Map

2 years 7 months ago

Fans of Call of Duty: Warzone are looking forward to engaging in a new theater of operations, but Activision has not revealed much ahead of launch next month. However, eagle-eyed members of the community have spotted important information about the new Call of Duty: Warzone map of Caldera, and it comes from a promotional jacket for Call of Duty: Vanguard sent to content creators.

As Charlie Intel has helpfully pointed out, Activision chief creative officer Pelle Sjoenell was engaging in some sneaky guerilla marketing when he tweeted out a picture of said jacket. Found in the liner is the map of Caldera sewn into it.

Scorn Sees Delay to 2022, Ebb Software Promises Better Communication

2 years 7 months ago

It has been a while since we last saw anything of Scorn, a first-person shooter that is heavy on the horror elements. Since its latest trailer emerged at an Inside Xbox event in 2020, any new developments saw a delay of the game. It should not be surprising then, that another delay has befallen Scorn, with the game now targeting a 2022 release.

This follows an initial target of fall 2021 set at Gamescom earlier this year. The development of the game has not been smooth, to say the least. The Giger-inspired FPS was part of the Steam Greenlight program back in the day, and was supposed to launch in two parts in 2017.

A Kickstarter set up later that year saw success with $223,000 raised, but the purported 2018 release window was not met either. For fans of Scorn, they have been dealt blow after blow, with the latest delay being just another obstacle to overcome.

Ubisoft Shares Two-month Roadmap for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

2 years 7 months ago

It might come as a surprise to some, but Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is still motoring along with new content set to arrive in the action-adventure title. Support for the Viking-themed game comes in the form of a new roadmap, which should set Assassin’s Creed Valhalla players up for at least the next two months.

Players can look forward to November 9, which is when Title Update 1.4.0 will launch. This will include a free game activity in the form of Tombs of the Fallen, and we can expect more bug fixes and improvements overall.

Following that, the roadmap reveals the coming of the limited-time event, Oskoreia Festival, to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This will run from November 11 to December. While details are still hazy, it should function similarly to the other festivals that have graced the game thus far.

The last month of the year will then see Title Update 1.4.1. Based on the image shared, we could be in for a festive time in the snow come December, and for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla fans, that would be a great way to end off the year. More details about the various aspects of the roadmap will be shared in the future, but for now, it is safe to say that the support for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is not ending anytime soon.

2 years 7 months ago

Developed by Turtle Rock Studios, Back 4 Blood was released just last month and it serves as a spiritual successor to the widely beloved Left 4 Dead 2. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with it, even if it seems as though the game is suffering from a few queue issues here and there.

That said, Turtle Rock will be continuing to support the game with free updates, as detailed in their content roadmap posted on Twitter today.

Annual Pass holders will be able to enjoy the Tunnels of Terror expansion that’s set to release next year, but there’s still plenty of content to enjoy in the free updates as well. Here are some of the features you can expect in the coming months:

What's In The Fortnite Item Shop - November 9, 2021: Toon Meowscles Returns

2 years 7 months ago

The Fortnite Item Shop has updated once again, bringing a host of skins, styles, and other cosmetics to the game. While the digital store is without any brand-new cosmetics today, it's rather loaded with fan-favorite characters from seasons past. Here's everything in the Fortnite Item Shop for November 9, 2021.

At the top of the list, both literally and in the hearts of many players, is the return of Toon Meowscles. This Golden Age-inspired cartoon version of everyone's favorite weightlifting feline was a huge hit when he debuted over the summer, and now he's back alongside his full slate of cosmetics including a Fortnite original hip hop song made for the hero. All of that and more is included in the Toon Meowscles cosmetic bundle for 2,200 V-Bucks. Here's what's included in the Inkville Gang set:

  • Toon Meowscles skin
  • Toona Can back bling
  • Ten-Ton Toon-Bells pickaxe
  • Fantastic Cat loading screen
  • Squash and Stretch built-in emote
  • Drop In lobby track featuring Trippie Redd
Uh oh, someone's in Toona Trouble.

If all of that isn't enough animated hijinx, you can also get the Chugga Chugga emote separately for 600 V-Bucks, which is both a synced emote, meaning other players can join you in performing it, as well as a traversal emote, so you can get the whole squad--or even lobby--taking the train across the map.

Rainbow Six Siege's New Operator, Thorn, Is A Trapper With A Unique Hard-Hitting SMG

2 years 7 months ago

Ubisoft Montreal revealed additional details for Rainbow Six Siege Year 6, Season 4: High Calibre. The season introduces Thorn, a new defender operator that Ubisoft Montreal describes as a trapper.

"Thorn's gadget is called the Razorbloom Shell," Rainbow Six Siege game designer Dominic Clément said during High Calibre's reveal, which is embedded below. "It's a sticky device you can throw pretty much everywhere on the map and it's going to stick on pretty much any surface."

As seen in Thorn's reveal trailer, the Razorbloom Shell is a proximity-based gadget. Once placed, an attacker must wander into its range in order for the gadget to activate. Upon activation, the attacker has a brief window of opportunity to decide whether to push ahead, retreat, or destroy the gadget before it explodes. When used correctly, the Razorbloom Shell is designed to force attackers into panicking and moving without careful consideration, which can prime them for ambush.

"We wanted to iterate on the idea of a trap operator and trap gadget," Clément said. "A lot of the gadgets that we have right now that are traps are pretty binary--either you walk into them and you get the effect or you don't. So with this gadget, we wanted to see what happens when you give the players a little more time to react and you give them a couple options."

The Classic Konami Code Now Has Its Own Store In Akihabara

2 years 7 months ago

A pop-up store selling exclusive merchandise themed around the Konami Code has opened at the Akihabara Container in Tokyo’s Akihabara district.

The Konami Code – a combination of button presses that unlocked special goodies in various Konami games from the 1980s onwards – was first used in Gradius in 1986. By entering up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, players could unlock a more powerful ship to play with. The hidden command went on to be used in Gradius II and other Konami titles.

The pop-up shop sells various exclusive items based on classic Konami titles such as Gradius, Goemon, Snatcher and Tokimeki Memorial. The full lineup can be seen in the gallery below or on the official website.

In addition, the store features a photo spot with a massive wall panel of Chichibinta Rika from the Parodius series, where visitors are invited to pose for selfies.

Konami has even released a theme song based on the Konami Code, produced by Japanese artist TOMOSUKE, sung by meiyo, and illustrated by Kaneko Shake. The video for the song, which features lyrics in Japanese extolling the virtues of the button command in detail, is available on Konami’s Japanese YouTube account.

Pokémon Has a Leak Problem

2 years 7 months ago

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl aren't out until next week, but the long-awaited remakes have already leaked owing to the retail copies being released early. This is nothing new for The Pokémon Company, which has been forced to deal with multiple leaks over the past few years. From the huge Pokémon Sword and Shield backlash to this new Diamond and Pearl leak, it's safe to say the Pokémon series has a noticeable problem keeping information under wraps.

Reported over the weekend by VGC, a Reddit user posted that they'd gotten a North American copy of the upcoming Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The post has since been removed, but pictures and videos of the games have been floating around on Twitter.

Leaks for Upcoming Pokémon Switch Games

The Gen 4 remakes were initially revealed back in February. However, just days before the official announcement, leaker Centro Pokemon said fans would soon get the "big news they've been waiting for", along with pictures of Dialga and Palkia from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The leak turned out to be true, as Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were unveiled shortly after.

How Xbox Is Advancing Gaming Accessibility on Its Platforms, And, Hopefully, Throughout the Industry

2 years 7 months ago

October marks the one-year anniversary of Microsoft and Sony releasing the current generation of consoles. The Xbox Series X/S and PS5 bring with them powerful new hardware, as well as libraries of titles that benefit from faster loading speeds and special features like Quick Resume or the haptics of the DualSense. With new systems comes the potential to innovate in making gaming not just faster or more tactile, but just as importantly more accessible, too.

Xbox has notably endeavored to make accessibility advancements part of its mission since before the launch of the Xbox Series X and S. From the launch of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, to several new accessibility updates and features for its systems recently unveiled during Disability Awareness Month in October, Xbox is building an accessible gaming package that many disabled players will gravitate toward. Speaking with IGN, Xbox accessibility leads discussed the company’s journey so far in building a more accessible platform, the work still left to be done to make all of gaming more accessible, and the hopes for better cooperation across the industry to achieve that future.
