Warframe's biggest story expansion so far The New War arrives this December

2 years 5 months ago

The New War, free-to-play sci-fi shooter Warframe's highly anticipated new story expansion will launch simultaneously on all platforms this December, Digital Extremes has announced.

Unveiled during this year's TennoCon fan event (but teased back in 2018), The New War is described as Warfare's "biggest narrative expansion...so far", telling the story of a massive Sentient invasion from the perspective of multiple playable characters - including a Grineer Lancer called Kahl-175, Corpus engineer Veso, and Conclave Master Teshin. 2 years 5 months ago

Developer Psyonix has announced that Rocket League Season 5 will begin November 17 following an update on November 16 at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET. The upcoming season adds a new battle car, arena variant, Rocket Pass, and limited-time mode.

As seen in a new trailer, embedded below, Starbase Arc is getting an updated look for Season 5, with an evil intergalactic force invading the arena. The trailer also features a reimagined variation of GRIMES' "Player Of Games," and the new song will be available in Rocket League at the start of Season 5. The new season will also add three new Rocket Labs arenas: Barricade, Colossus, and Hourglass.

As per usual, the new season will feature a new Rocket Pass (Rocket League's version of a battle pass). The paid premium track includes dozens of unique rewards; most notably, the new Nexus battle car. Keeping with Season 5's space theme, the paid Rocket Pass track also includes cosmetics related to star systems and spaceships, such as the Spacedirt paint finish, Hyperspace animated decal, and Cosmosis goal explosion.

A new limited-time mode, Heatseeker Ricochet, will kick off November 18, the second day of Season 5. The mode is a variation of another Rocket League limited-time mode, Heatseeker, in which hitting the ball causes it to automatically hone in on your opponent's goal.

2 years 5 months ago

Pikmin Bloom Has Been Downloaded 2 Million Times In Two Weeks

2 years 5 months ago

Pikmin Bloom, the new AR mobile game from Pokemon Go developer Niantic and Nintendo, has been downloaded two million times since its limited-territory release two weeks ago.

As reported by Eurogamer, this information comes from Sensor Tower, which tracks app store data, spending, and downloads. Pikmin Bloom was downloaded 864,000 times in Japan, which is the game's most popular country. The US is the second-largest and the UK is third. Pikmin Bloom is primarily focused on exercise, letting players plant and grow Pikmin as they walk. The more you walk, the more Pikmin you have. The Pikmin grow flowers on their heads, which can be planted to grow more flowers.

To compare this to Niantic's other two licensed games, Pokemon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Pikmin is doing relatively well for being a much smaller property. According to Sensor Tower, Pokemon Go hit 75 million downloads in the same time frame and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was downloaded 12.4 million times. In terms of revenue, Pikmin Bloom has generated $437,000 so far, with Pokemon Go hitting $116 million and Wizards Unite hitting $8 million in that same period. It seems reasonable that expectations for Pikmin Bloom were likely lower than both of those games due to it being a smaller IP.

Battlefield 2042: DICE Is Renaming A Boris Skin Referencing A "Real World Issue"

2 years 5 months ago

DICE has announced it will change the name of a Battlefield 2042 character skin that was perceived to be insensitive. Players informed DICE that one of Boris' Mastery Tier skins contained a reference to a "real world issue."

This issue is not "reflective of [developer DICE's] values," and it will be changed in a future update. DICE said it appreciates fans bringing this to its attention.

DICE didn't confirm the specific skin in question, saying only that it is a Mastery Tier skin for the Specialist Boris, who is Russian. One of Boris' Mastery Tier skins is called "Little Green Man," and this is seemingly the skin in question. This terms is in reference to the Ukrainian crisis.

Boris is described as a "self-motivated" soldier who is seeking power and control and is known to be "a bit aggressive" when it comes to his leadership skills.

Battlefield 2042 "Unable To Load Persistence Data" Error Is Causing Headaches

2 years 5 months ago

On the first full day of Battlefield 2042's early access launch, the futuristic military shooter is seriously struggling. Players are unable to connect to multiplayer matches due in part to "persistence" errors.

An error message reads, "Unable to load persistence data. Game will return to start menu." The prompt says players should check their internet connections to try to fix the issue, but it appears to be more serious than that alone.

Ouch

GameSpot staff on the US east and west coasts are receiving the error message and are unable to load into matches. The game loads a map just fine but then returns the error message before play begins.

DICE is aware of the issue and confirmed that the problem is on the studio's side. For the time being, DICE said it recommends hitting Retry and giving it another shot. GameSpot staff has tried this and had no success.

Nintendo Has Revealed October US Sales Numbers For Metroid Dread And The Switch

2 years 5 months ago

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in the US in October and Nintendo has officially revealed how many consoles it sold during that month. According to the NPD Group, the Nintendo Switch continues to lead in the number of consoles sold in the US in 2021, although the PS5 leads in terms of dollar amount sold.

In an interview with The Verge, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said that the Switch sold 711,000 units overall in October, with 314,000 of those being the brand-new OLED model. Bowser noted that these numbers were down 3% from last October, in part because of the ongoing chip shortage resulting in production shortages.

Sony Celebrates PlayStation 5 Anniversary, Reveals Top Played Games In Its First Year

2 years 5 months ago

In honor of the first anniversary of the launch of PlayStation 5, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan took to the PlayStation Blog to take a look back at the year that was as well as what's to come.

Even for a year where it felt like PS5 consoles were hard to find (and still are!), gamers put in plenty of time on the now-current gen device. "PS5 gamers have collectively played more than 4.6 billion hours of gameplay on PS5 and broadcast more than 26 million hours of content," Ryan boasted. No doubt there's been an impressive amount DualSense controller recharges as well. Along with these impressive stats, Ryan listed off the top ten most played games on PS5 over the past year. Some are less surprising, but a few launch titles managed to stick on the list despite some more popular games.

  • Fortnite
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • FIFA 21
  • NBA 2K21
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Destiny 2
  • MLB The Show 21
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Demon’s Souls
  • NBA 2K22

It's great to see Miles Morales and Demon's Souls hanging with the heaviest time-sinks like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, especially since they're day one releases with (mostly) single-player campaigns.

World of Warcraft Is Celebrating 17 Years With New Anniversary Rewards

2 years 5 months ago

World of Warcraft is turning 17 this year, and Blizzard is celebrating with new rewards as part of a special anniversary event.

As detailed by Blizzard, starting November 15 and lasting December 6, players will receive a celebration package in the mail that includes fireworks and an item to increase experience and reputation point gains by 17%. Two daily quests will also be available for completion that involve answering World of Warcraft trivia or battling various world bosses from vanilla WoW in exchange for Timewarped Badges, which can be used to purchase various rewards like toys, pets, and transmogs.

The event is similar to previous anniversary celebrations, with one major new addition. A new weekly quest will pit players against the Burning Crusade world boss, the Doomwalker, alongside new rewards like the Doomwalker Trophy Stand toy and Illidari Doomhawk mount. The addition of the Doomwalker ties in with the release of Burning Crusade Classic, a new version of the game's first expansion, earlier this year.

The anniversary event will also see the return of the classic version of the game's Alterac Valley battleground. Players who earn the achievement associated with the battleground can earn two mounts--the Stormpike Battle Ram for the Alliance and the Frostwolf Snarler for the Horde.

Blizzard is currently operating three different versions of WoW--the current Shadowlands version, WoW Classic (which will be receiving seasonal servers starting on November 16), and Burning Crusade Classic.

Every Cheat Code For Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition

2 years 5 months ago

Now That Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is out in the wild, fans and newcomers are enjoying improved versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. While the games are a blast on their own merits, many fans remember punching in the copious amounts of cheat codes to make each title even more delightfully absurd. Most of these cheats apply to the Definitive Editions and we've gathered all of them here in one place.

To activate the cheats, simply enter the correct button prompts while in-game. Keep in mind that Rockstar has already warned that an unspecified "couple of cheats" have been removed from The Definitive Editions due to technical reasons. If a code doesn't work, that's likely the reason. Also, using cheats will lock certain trophies/achievements so be sure to save your game before punching these in. You can click the tabs on the left side of this page to quickly jump to the game of your choice.

Iron Banter - This Week In Destiny 2: The Destiny Experience In I Think You Should Leave Memes

2 years 5 months ago

So listen.

It's been a busy couple of weeks for me, and I haven't really had time to think about Destiny 2, much less play it. This week, I played an inordinate amount of Battlefield to complete GameSpot's Battlefield 2042 review. Well, I say complete, but it's a review-in-progress, which means there's more playing to be done. Immediately before that, it was the same story, but for the Call of Duty: Vanguard review. Plus, we're nearing our annual game of the year deliberations, which means it's a sprint to play all the cool things I haven't played yet. (Check out Inscryption, y'all. Then read my thing about what's going on in Inscryption's story.)

I'm making excuses; the reality is, I'm kinda punting on this week's Iron Banter. But I didn't want to blow it off completely (something I quietly did a couple weeks ago), so I'm treating this one as a recharge day. This is mostly for me and Senior Editor Chris Pereira. This is my Bozo Dubbed Over, but for Destiny.

Here's the Destiny 2 experience as depicted in I Think You Should Leave memes.

Microsoft and Gucci created 100 "Xbox by Gucci" Series X consoles and matching controllers that feature Gucci's iconic designs. The console itself features a laser-cut monogram motif of the famous GG pattern that serves as both Guccio Gucci's initials and also the popular gaming phrase Good Game.

The controller has blue and red stripes inspired by the brand's House Web design. The console and controller come inside a hard carry case with blue and red stripes. An Xbox Game Pass subscription is included as well, because of course it is.

GG

Only 100 are being made, and they sell for $10,000 each. You can find them for sale in Gucci's stores starting on November 17 in New York, Beverly Hills, Mexico City, Milan, London, Berlin, Beijing, and Tokyo.

In other Xbox news, the company's 20th anniversary event is coming up this Monday, November 15. No game announcements are expected, but Microsoft will look back at the past two decades of Xbox and celebrate the franchise's accomplishments.

Fortnite Boba Fett Skin Arrives On Christmas Eve

2 years 5 months ago

A Fortnite Boba Fett skin is on the way just in time for Christmas, Disney and Epic Games jointly revealed today. The battle royale game introduced The Mandolorian last summer during Fortnite Season 5, and soon players will get into the boots of another Star Wars bounty hunter.

The news was revealed during Disney's online hype show, Disney Plus Day, which the brand is using to reveal new series and dive deeper into upcoming projects. The Fortnite Boba Fett skin will arrive on December 24, just in time for The Book of Boba Fett, a new and exclusive series debuting on Disney+ at the same time.

For now, all we have to go on is the hand-drawn image attached to the revealing tweet, so we'll have to wait to learn the names of the items in his complete cosmetic set, as well as whether more characters from the series will come with Boba to the Fortnite island--which may be the Chapter 3 island by then.

However, we can see in the image at least one hint toward Boba's full locker: The staff to his left looks an awful like a typical pickaxe cosmetic in Fortnite, and we can reasonably assume his famous jetpack will act as back bling too.

Forza Horizon 5 PC modded to add ray tracing in-game

2 years 5 months ago

Forza Horizon 5 ships on PC, Xbox Series X and Series S with hardware-accelerated ray tracing support to embellish vehicle reflections - but only in Forza Vista and garage modes. This is something of a shame, especially when photo mode in particular stands to benefit immensely. However, on the DF Supporter Program, one of our backers - Frosticles - produced an RT mod for the PC version (with an assist from Rotab for the Windows Store version), allowing for reflections to run in all modes of the game. So, how beneficial is it and what is the performance cost? Could it be enabled in future on Xbox Series X?

To begin with, let's clarify how standard reflections work in Forza Horizon 5, because it's fair to say that even without RT, they look great. If you can imagine six invisible cameras attached to the player vehicle, capturing imagery and mapping it onto a sphere, you get some idea of how the reflections are generated. Effectively, you're looking at cube-map reflections generated continuously in real-time. These reflections are not perspective-correct, but it's close enough and works well enough.

Prey Is A New Predator Movie Set 300 Years In The Past, Will Stream On Hulu Next Year

2 years 5 months ago

There are movie franchises that will likely never take a break – Halloween, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and despite what Vin Diesel says, probably Fast & Furious, to name a few – and it seems Predator is one of them.

That’s because a new Predator movie is due out next year, as reported by IndieWire on Twitter. Titled Prey, it’s being directed by 10 Cloverfield Lane director, Dan Trachtenberg, and it will stream on Hulu sometime in 2022. It’s unclear based on IndieWire’s wording if the movie is streaming exclusively on Hulu or if it will simply stream on the service and hit theaters next year.

Battlefield 2042 Portal Servers Reset To "Combat Bad Behavior"

2 years 5 months ago

Battlefield 2042 is currently live for owners of the gold or ultimate editions of the game, and it didn't take long for players to find ways to farm XP using the game's Portal mode. Updates, along with hard server resets, have already come to the mode as a result in order to combat the issue and other "bad behaviors."

A look at the Portal mode server browser earlier today showed numerous XP farming servers with names like "1 HP Bots XP" and "Fast XP." Because players can create custom servers with highly customized rulesets in Portal mode, it seems like one of the first things players thought up was how to most effectively grind XP in order to rank up and unlock more weapons and attachments.

Outriders Presentation To Reveal ‘Colossal’ Free Update

2 years 5 months ago

Developer People Can Fly will air its first Outriders Broadcast since the game launched on April 1. The presentation will give fans a peek at a “colossal” free content update hitting the cooperative shooter in the near future.

People Can Fly provides no other hints as to what this update entails. If you’ve enjoyed Outriders and the idea of playing more of it sounds appealing, you’ll need to tune into Square Enix’s Twitch channel this Monday, November 15 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific/12:00 p.m. Eastern.

Outriders has been relatively quiet the past few months in terms of major updates. Outside of squashing bugs, stabilizing servers, and tinkering with loot drops, People Can Fly has kept any big expansion plans close to the vest until now. The game has felt a bit forgotten as a result despite earning a 9 out of 10 review score from us at launch. Outriders is an entertaining co-op shooter, especially alongside friends, so we’re excited to see what People Can Fly has in store.

Outriders is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC. The game is also part of Xbox Game Pass on both console and PC.

Metroid Dread Sales Could Bode Well for the Future of the Series

2 years 5 months ago

Metroid: Dread's launch figures in the US have comfortably beaten records for the series, and could allude to a bright future for Samus after quite a dry spell.

Data published by the NPD Group offered an insight into the popularity of Metroid: Dread after its successful October 8 launch on Nintendo Switch. Following its release, the game debuted as October's third best-selling game in the US. Despite being released over a week into that period, Metroid: Dread also came out as the highest-ranked selling game on the Nintendo Switch.

In doing that, it achieved the highest ever launch month sales of any Metroid game to date - dwarfing its predecessors by some margin. According to the Group, Metroid: Dread's launch month dollar sales nearly doubled those of the series' previous record holder, Metroid: Prime.

Metroid has been a quiet series for a long time. The last mainline 2D entry in the series was 2017 remake Samus Returns, with the last wholly original 2D entry arriving in the form of 2004's Zero Mission. In terms of 3D games, we haven't seen one since 2010's Other M.

While good sales figures for Dread don't necessarily confirm a busier future for Metroid releases, it does at least bode well that Nintendo can succeed with new entries in the series. The next Metroid game we know about is Metroid Prime 4, which was announced in 2017 but restarted development in 2019.
