Astroneer is survival without the panic

2 years 5 months ago

I remember one of the biggest highlights of my primary school days was field trips. I had fond memories of many of them, but one that stuck with me was The Space Travel exhibit at the Ontario Science Center. I loved every second of it. The thought of space travel, seeing the different landscapes, exploring new territory, and maybe even meeting otherworldly beings was indeed an incredible thought for me. Do you remember moments like this?

Although years have passed since that day, my interest never waned; it did, however, take a backseat for a little while until that one fateful day in 2016 - I caught the teaser for the space-sim, Astroneer, where I was catapulted back to being a kid again.

Skyrim's New Fishing Mini-Game: The Kotaku Review

2 years 5 months ago

Fishing in video games is tricky to nail. Many games offer such a mechanic, but few actually pull it off. Personally, I can’t even recall a single fishing mini-game I’ve wrung enjoyment out of in the last few years. Pokémon? Tedious, annoying. Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Zzzzz. Hades? The only thing resembling a flaw…

Xbox Series X|S - What Surprised Us Most, 1 Year Later

2 years 5 months ago

Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Series S consoles turned a year old on November 10. Within that year, Xbox released a few first-party console games (like Psychonauts 2 and Forza Horizon 5), and its new consoles saw several well-received third-party console exclusives as well, such as The Big Con and The Artful Escape.

Rather than deliver a traditional "the year that was" retrospective, we're instead going to cover the features, services, and games that most surprised us in the first year of the Xbox Series X|S's lifecycle. From a love for Smart Delivery to a welcome reprieve from scrolling through social media, here's all the biggest surprises from the first year of the Xbox Series X|S. When you're done reading, be sure to check out our corresponding list of what most surprised us about the PS5 in its first year.

Smart Delivery is essential

Xbox threw around a lot of buzzwords ahead of the launch of the Xbox Series X|S. Chief among them was "Smart Delivery," which Xbox used as a catch-all term to describe how cross-generation games would work on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Basically, if a game released for both consoles, you only needed to buy it once--the Xbox One would know to play the past-generation version of the game and the Xbox Series X|S would know to play the current-generation version. It was all automatic.

Assassin’s Creed Lead Writer Returns To Ubisoft Seven Months After Leaving

2 years 5 months ago

The writer behind some of the stories and dialogue featured in Assassin’s Creed games like Revelations, Black Flag, and even last year’s Valhalla, Darby McDevitt, has returned to Ubisoft.

This news comes by way of Video Games Chronicle, which reports that McDevitt is back at the company just seven months after leaving it. In that time, he began working for developer Illogika Games. When he left Ubisoft back in March, McDevitt said he wanted to take on “a new adventure” and it seems he either finished up that adventure or decided he preferred ones where hidden blades are involved.

“Yes, I have returned to Ubisoft,” McDevitt told VGC. “As I pondered my career over the past year, I focused on my desire to explore new ideas and unknown frontiers. Much to my delight, this is reflected in my return to Ubisoft to work on [Assassin’s Creed]. I’m excited to continue my journey. Stay tuned.”

McDevitt’s return to Ubisoft is likely a big relief for the company because as VGC notes, McDevitt’s departure meant the Assassin’s Creed series had lost one of its main loremasters, especially in light of Corey May leaving Ubisoft back in 2015.

Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda Review

2 years 5 months ago

It will probably come as no surprise that the second of Nintendo's new modern Game & Watch systems is an absolute delight. I was quite taken by the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch introduced last year, but The Legend of Zelda Game & Watch retains all the charm of the first while expanding on what made it so great in the first place – and the included games are arguably better than the ones on the Super Mario version.

Whereas last year's Game & Watch included the original Super Mario Bros. and the Japanese-only Super Mario Bros. 2 (known as The Lost Levels in the US), the Zelda Game & Watch includes three games: The Legend of Zelda and The Legend of Zelda II for the NES, as well as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Game Boy. An extra game would have been more than enough to make me happy already, but Nintendo went a step further by making it so you can even play either the English or Japanese versions of the first two NES Zeldas, while Link's Awakening is available in English, French, German, and Japanese.

PlayStation 5: What Surprised Us Most, One Year Later

2 years 5 months ago

The PlayStation 5 is officially one year old, though you may not know it by looking at store shelves and online retailers. The console is nearly as hard to find now as it was in 2020, making this generation suffer from an awkward, lurching start. Still, as it turns a year old we can take a look back at its first year on the market, and the parts about it that surprised us the most.

The game library has been surprisingly strong

Before launch there was reason to suspect this launch window would be uncharacteristically weak. The system launched in the midst of a global pandemic, which had already resulted in game delays. It was an open question if many of the next-gen games slated to release within the PS5's first year would actually release at all, but several of them did arrive as scheduled (or with a slight delay).

Cross-gen games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Resident Evil: Village have gotten a notable boost on PS5 compared to their PS4 brethren, and many other games that released near the end of the last generation have gotten free upgrade patches. On top of that, the PS5 has gotten notable and well-reviewed exclusives in its first year, including Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, Demon's Souls, and Deathloop. That's a much more stacked lineup than I would have expected just a year ago at this time.

That said, the surprises haven't all been positive. Some games, most notably Horizon Forbidden West, were delayed out of the holiday season and will miss the first year of the PS5 lifespan. In Horizon's case, this almost meant no free upgrade path as Sony had promised for games within the launch window, before fan outcry caused the company to double back and make good on its previous commitment.

Boba Fett is heading to Fortnite in December

2 years 5 months ago

Star Wars' iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett is the latest character to up sticks and tumble awkwardly from the comfortable surroundings of their own franchise into the gaping, metaversal maw of Fortnite, and will be doing so this December.

More specifically, Boba Fett - real name Bob Feet - will be joining Fortnite in the form of a new skin on 24th December at 4pm PT, or at the stroke of midnight on 25th December if you happen to be in the UK. All very festive, but it could certainly be more so.

WoW Brings Back Tier Sets, But the Community Is Divided

2 years 5 months ago

Activision Blizzard is currently facing serious ongoing allegations of harassment and mistreatment of marginalized workers. To learn more, please visit our timeline as well as our in-depth report on the subject.

World of Warcraft has shared some details about the game's next major content update, which will conclude the current expansion: Shadowlands. The update includes the return of the much-desired class tier sets of armor, but despite a general community love for tier gear, some folks are less than thrilled.

Tier gear has been a beloved WoW institution since the game first came out. For years, most major raids would reward players with unique, multi-piece sets of armor with cool designs, with one set tailored for each specific class. These would often have some of the best stats available at the time, and sometimes even really cool abilities or boosts tacked on if you were wearing multiple pieces. Also, if you had the full set, you could ride around Orgrimmar with flames spouting out of your shoulders or something so that everyone in town knew you had killed the latest dragon or demigod or undead overlord threat with 19 or so of your friends. It was a great time.

Forza Horizon 5 Hits 6 Million Players During Launch Week

2 years 5 months ago

Forza Horizon 5 is one of the biggest releases of the year for Xbox Game Studios. It looks like many players are enjoying the game as it hit 6 million players already and it's still the game's launch week.

Xbox Games marketing GM Aaron Greenberg also says that the game also set the record for Xbox Game Studios' best launch week ever. It is important to note that players have had early access to the game since November 5 if they purchased the Premium Edition. Otherwise, it officially launched for everyone else on November 9. Even so, it's impressive to see the player base so high in only one week. It was last reported that 4.5 million players checked out Forza Horizon 5 since its November 9 launch, but now it has surpassed that to 6 million and is still climbing.

Forza Horizon 5 is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It's also included in any Xbox Game Pass subscription, so the game has had a far reach.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Sneak Peek Teases Another Duel Between Darth Vader And His Old Master

2 years 5 months ago

Disney finally pulled the curtain back a bit on its upcoming Disney Plus series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, with a new behind-the-scenes sneak peek, and it teases another duel between the titular character and his old apprentice, Anakin Skywalker.

Of course, since this series follows the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, we know that old apprentice is Anakin Skywalker no more. He’s Darth Vader now. As far as we know, Obi-Wan hasn’t yet seen Anakin as Vader in between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the start of this series so it seems we’ll get to see them meet for the first time on-screen.

We’ll also get to see Obi-Wan actor, Ewan McGregor, share the screen with Anakin actor, Hayden Christensen, for the first time in years during this series. Neither of these actors has made a live-action return to the Star Wars universe since Episode III so it seems we’re in for a treat. McGregor, for what it’s worth, seems especially excited about it if today’s sneak peek is any indication. Christensen does not appear in it.

Unfortunately, the sneak peek is only available on Disney Plus at the time of this writing so we don’t have a way to show you it here – you’ll need to login to a Disney Plus account to view it.

New World Governors Are Embezzling Gold, And No One Can Stop Them

2 years 5 months ago

"I never stole gold," says Stibs. "I took the gold out of the treasury of the company I co-owned at the time."

Stibs has had his reputation tarnished. As a consul in wilderness MMO New World, he was one of the players responsible for handling money in his company, a group of players who band together to face the wilds. One day he took 15,000 gold coins from the shared pot, left the company, and signed up with another faction. He had his reasons.

He's not the only one taking company cash. In the midst of a creaking economy, the aristocracy of New World are looking at the coin piled in their treasuries with an increasingly glittering eye. For some, the temptation proves too much. This game is set in a lush landscape of forest and fern, designed to be exploited by colonizing player conglomerates. But it's also a hard place to earn a living, which has led to a trend. Embezzlement.
