Twitch Comes To Switch

2 years 6 months ago

If you’ve been looking to watch your favorite Twitch streamers on the go (and don’t already own a smartphone), the Twitch app is now available on Switch.

Nintendo tweeted the surprise announcement today that you can download the app from the Switch eShop. Now you can watch your streamer of choice play Animal Crossing: New Horizons or complain about the Nintendo 64 emulation on the online Expansion Pack. Given the lack of many popular streaming services on the eShop, such as Netflix, the fact that Twitch made the cut is a small miracle.

Some upcoming Switch games you could watch others play include Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which launches this month. You can read the most recent news regarding its Legendary-focused endgame content here.

Eat Pizza, Get PUBG: New State DLC

2 years 6 months ago

Everyone who orders pizza through the Slice app in the US will get a "Chicken Medal" for use in the battle royale game PUBG: New State, which just released this week.

The promotion begins on November 15. The Chicken Medal can be used to unlock a variety of items in the mobile game, including loot chests. These normally require three medals to unlock, but the Chicken Medal lets you unlock a chest immediately. Inside the chests are a variety of things, including in-game currency and skins.

Mmmmh pizza

This is part of the newly launched Slice Gaming division of Slice, which previously partnered with Ubisoft to give away Far Cry 6 DLC to pizza-eaters. The new campaign with PUBG runs through December 15.

Slice Gaming is a new brand that works with local pizzerias to offer video game-themed perks like codes and rewards like it's done with Far Cry and PUBG.

New State launched on November 11. Set in the year 2051, PUBG New State is described as a "full, uncompromised battle royale game" and one of the "most realistic and technically advanced mobile games to date."

In other news, PUBG was recently updated with a new creature type, chickens, who will squawk to reveal your location if you're not careful.

Windows Store Will Finally Let You Choose Install Locations And Support Mods

2 years 6 months ago

Microsoft has announced plans to update the Windows Store and Xbox App on PC that will finally allow users to dictate where installs take place, access game files, and apply mods to games.

The update, which will be rolling out for testing to Xbox Insiders soon, brings the Windows Store and Xbox App on PC in line with other launchers such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, and more. With it, you'll be able to choose specific drives and the folders within them for game installs, letting you back up your games to secondary drives or move files after installation. Microsoft will also lift all restrictions on the game files themselves, letting you access them freely without pesky permissions issues.

With that comes support for mods, with games that support them showing up on the Xbox App directly. The app will also let you manage and install mods directly, making it slightly easier than messing with the game files directly. All-in-all, it's just a fantastic update, finally giving Xbox Game Pass subscribers the control over their games on PC that has been standard on every other launcher for years already.

Twitch App Available Now For Nintendo Switch

2 years 6 months ago

Nintendo Switch owners can now watch their favorite streamers both on the big screen and in handheld mode with the release of the Twitch app. The Twitch app is available to download for free through the Nintendo eShop offering most of the features available on Twitch's website.

Users can sign in to their account to see all of their followed channels, browse through live broadcasts, watch VODs and clips, and, most importantly, do all of that while in handheld mode, as long as they have an internet connection. Twitch was previously available on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles, but Nintendo has seemingly been picky when it comes to streaming services on its platform.

Playdate Preorders Slip To 2022 Amid Battery And Component Sourcing Issues

2 years 6 months ago

Playdate, the adorable yellow gaming device that will receive waves of games over time, has been delayed from its initial late 2021 launch and into 2022.

Panic, creators of the Playdate, emailed customers notifying them that an issue concerning batteries with the first batch of manufactured devices has resulted in the delay, with the company choosing to replace them all before shipping to customers. This has pushed back the first two batches of preorders into 2022, with any remaining orders after that now slated for the second half of 2022. Panic says orders past the 50,000 mark (which is hasn't reached yet) will ship in 2023.

"As our first 5,000 finished Playdate units arrived at our warehouse in California for 2021, we began to test a few of them," the email reads. "We quickly became concerned that some of them weren’t giving us the battery life we expected. Playdate’s battery is designed to last a very long time, and always be ready for you, even if not used for a while. But that was not the case: in fact, we found a number of units with batteries so drained, Playdate wouldn’t power on at all — and couldn’t be charged. That’s a battery worst-case scenario."

Panic says it has already sourced a new battery and has placed the production orders for units meant to be shipped in 2022. With that, Panic ran into the same issues that most supply chains have during the past year, with the global semiconductor shortage potentially incurring further delays. This has been alleviated somewhat by a redesigned main board, which is allowing Panic to hit its 2022 date.

"There are a number of other part shortages we’re trying to outsmart right now, and while it’s stressful and frustrating, rest assured we will do everything we can to make as many Playdates as we can for you," the email concluded.

Sure Sounds Like World Of Warcraft's Next Expansion Will Return To Azeroth

2 years 6 months ago

After having learned about the cosmic origins of the universe and battled various gods of the afterlife in the game's latest expansion, more than a few World of Warcraft players are yearning for a return to the more grounded (relatively speaking) world of Azeroth. And based on comments from lead narrative designer Steve Danuser, that could be in the cards for the game's next expansion.

In a new interview with Game Rant about the game's recently announced patch 9.2, Danuser says there is room for both massive, cosmic stories and smaller, more personal tales in the Warcraft universe. In doing so, he also heavily implies that the next expansion will be a return to the world at the center of the Warcraft universe, Azeroth.

"Don't assume it's just going to be one thing," Danuser says. "There's storylines building up for the next great book in the Warcraft saga. Some of that groundwork is laid here, but there's a lot more back on Azeroth we need to get back to, and delve into some storylines and characters there."

Every Fish in Fortnite So Far: Fortnite Fish Special Abilities List

2 years 6 months ago

Starting with Chapter 2 in 2019, Fortnite has given players the mechanic of fishing, which continues to evolve and include new benefits all the time. Each new season of Fortnite seems to bring with it not just its own unique array of fish that can be caught and eaten or otherwise used in-game, but most seasons have revealed never-before-seen fish which often tie into the themes of different seasons.

For the most part, Fortnite fish are consumable items that offer buffs to whomever eats them. For example, the Flopper and Shield Fish heal HP and shields respectively, while the Hop Flopper gives its hungry looper a few seconds of low-gravity jumping ability. Some fish, such as the Vendetta Flopper are extremely rare and can instantly ping the nearest enemy when eaten.

For players, filling out the Fish Collection book in-game is one of the many side activities to take part in on the Fortnite island. A typical season of Fortnite will offer 30+ different kinds of fish, including special variants that can only be found in certain places or with special items like the enhanced Pro Fishing Rod.

Each season of Fortnite brings its own pool of fish to catch.

While fishing extensively in the middle of a battle royale match means you're at risk for being in someone's crosshairs soon enough, a quick trip to the various ponds, Lazy Lake, or the enveloping oceans can give you a critical item just when you need it most. These include healing fish when you're low on HP, a Shadow Flopper which can help you briefly go invisible, and many more as you can see below.

Far Cry 7 Is A Live Service Game Similar To Assassin's Creed Infinity - Report

2 years 6 months ago

Far Cry boss Dan Hay, who was the franchise's executive producer for the past decade, is leaving Ubisoft amid reports that the next game in the series will adopt a live-service approach similar to what's rumored for Assassin's Creed Infinity.

Hay's last day at Ubisoft will be November 12, a spokesperson confirmed to VGC. There is no word yet on what Hay is doing next, and Ubisoft said only that the developer is "pursuing a new chapter in his professional life."

Hay started with Ubisoft in 2011 as a producer on Far Cry 3, according to his LinkedIn page. He worked on numerous entries in the series thereafter, and was most recently executive producer and creative director for the series.

Before joining Ubisoft, Hay worked at Raven Software on games like X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. He moved to Day 1 Studios in 2007 and worked on Fracture and Fear 3 at the studio.

Ubisoft is looking to fill Hay's role permanently, but in the interim, the Far Cry brand team will be managed by 15-year Ubisoft veteran Sandra Warren in Montreal.

As for the next Far Cry game, reporter Jeff Grubb says it will be a live-service game similar to the Assassin's Creed Infinity project. Far Cry 6 only just released in October, and Ubisoft has plans to support the game with lots of DLC and updates over time, so the company is unlikely to discuss any future projects anytime soon. GameSpot has contacted Ubisoft for comment.

Playdate Shipping Delayed To 2022

2 years 6 months ago

If you preordered a Playdate handheld gaming device that was set to ship this year, you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer.

Panic Inc. announced today that its first batch of Playdates originally set to ship in 2021 have been delayed to early 2022, citing a “critical battery issue” that was caught late in the process. As a result, all batteries in Playdates set to ship had to be replaced.

“This quickly turned into a months-long, all-hands-on-deck research stress-ball and we halted production at the factory,” a press release reads. “We made the difficult, expensive call to replace all of our existing batteries with new ones from a totally different battery supplier.”

Panic says the first batch consisted of 20,000 units, all planned to ship late 2021 (presumably now or soon) but that now, they’ll ship in early 2022. A more precise shipping window was not revealed. If you’ve preordered a Playdate, Panic says your place in line to actually receive the device will not change so long as your preorder remains active.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands' Final Patch Will Put An End To The Jailer's Plans

2 years 6 months ago

World of Warcraft's patch 9.2, Eternity's End, has been revealed, and it will be "the final chapter of one book of the Warcraft saga," says lead narrative designer Steve Danuser in a new developer preview.

Patch 9.2 will take players to the realm of Zereth Mortis, described as a workshop for the mythical First Ones, and the location responsible for all creation. The Jailer, the big bad of the Shadowlands expansion, seeks to breach the Sepulcher of the First Ones in order to rewrite the rules of creation. Of course, it will be up to players to stop him, in what will be the expansion's final raid. Along the way players will confront Anduin, the fallen King of Stormwind who is under the control of the Jailer's domination magic.

Most WoW expansions conclude after three, or sometimes even four, major content patches before moving on to the next expansion. Based on comments made by Danuser in the developer preview, where he says the Shadowlands expansion is a story told in three acts and that this is the "final chapter," it certainly sounds like patch 9.2 will mark the end of the expansion. If that is in fact the case, Shadowlands will be the second expansion in the game's history, alongside Warlords of Draenor, to have received only two content updates.

You Can Now Watch Twitch on Your Nintendo Switch

2 years 6 months ago

You can now put Twitch on your Nintendo Switch. The streaming app is now available for download on the Nintendo Switch eShop.

I've checked out Twitch on my Switch (I'll never get tired of that rhyme), and it performs pretty admirably, all things considered. The app can only be used to view streams on Twitch and not stream directly from the Switch itself.

The home menu will feel familiar to anyone used to navigating through Twitch's recommendations or your subscriptions, but it doesn't look like you can type into a streamer's chat directly from the Switch. Instead, you'll need to scan a QR code, which opens up a streamer's chat as a webpage on your phone, which seems more manageable than using the Switch's digital keyboard.

Twitch joins the lineup of other streaming apps that eventually arrived on the Switch, including Hulu, YouTube, and Funimation. Heck, there's even Pokemon TV, but still no Netflix.

PlayStation Exclusive Spider-Man For Marvel’s Avengers Finally Revealed

2 years 6 months ago

Spider-Man is finally here for those still playing Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers, and he’s today been revealed in action for the first time courtesy of a brand new trailer. He swings into Marvel’s Avengers on Nov. 30, 2021.

Of course, only for those who are playing the game on PlayStation platforms. The iconic hero is exclusive to PlayStation as a result of the licensing rights that the Japanese publisher holds for the Spider-Man franchise, something that caused a fair bit of controversy when it was first announced last year.

Spider-Man’s arrival for Marvel’s Avengers has been delayed since then, and in that time the game itself has rather fallen out of popularity following what was a rather mediocre critical reception.

In any case, he’s not far away now, and from the trailer below he looks like one of the more compelling characters to play in the game, perhaps partly due to the fact that his full costume means he appears as he always does across comics, movies, television, and games — something that can’t be said of the rest of the game’s heroes.

Solar Ash Interview: Lead Developer Discusses Accessibility, Transitioning to 3D, Speedrunning, & More

2 years 6 months ago

Solar Ash is the next title from indie developer Heart Machine (Hyper Light Drifter). In this interview, I got to sit down with the lead developer and founder of the studio, Alx Preston. Down below we cover several topics ranging from speedrunning to accessibility settings and Kickstarter to partnering with Sony and Epic.

Solar Ash is nearly here, but it has been a long five-year road for the Preston on the team at Heart Machine. And we would like to thank him for taking the time to sit down with us even as the game is on the home stretch to its approaching launch date.

This was a fantastic experience to be able to talk to Preston about Solar Ash, a little bit about his past work on Hyper Light Drifter, and all of the hard work that has gone into the new game. You can find the full conversation down below.

Note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

Omar: What was it like or what were some of the challenges you and the team had adapting kind of a similar art style or the same kind of general feeling from Hyper Light Drifter to Solar Ash, going from 2D to 3D?

Alx: The styles share a lot of similarities and certainly we had to make a lot of accommodations for 3D and kind of adjust what we were doing and our expectations overall of what can be done. But it also opened up a lot of new pathways that weren’t possible in 2D that made it really interesting and enjoyable in ways and more unique than we could do in 2D. You know 3D just by virtue of having another dimension opens up manyfold different options. And Unreal is relatively powerful.

Spider-Man Swings Into Action In Marvel's Avengers Cinematic Trailer

2 years 6 months ago

After revealing Spider-Man’s design ahead of his debut in Marvel’s Avengers, we now get our first look at him in action, albeit in cinematic fashion. IGN premiered the trailer for the wall-crawler’s upcoming Hero Event on November 30, which will be exclusive to the PlayStation versions of the game.

For those afraid Crystal Dynamics might screw up Spidey from a personality standpoint, the trailer proves he still has his endearingly dorky sense of humor and quips (including making a Mortal Kombat reference of all things). It remains to be seen how Spider-Man’s powers translate into gameplay given there’s no in-game footage. Hopefully, that reveal will come sooner than later given how close we are to Pete’s arrival.

2 New Xbox Exclusives Reportedly Leaked, Including a Single-Player Southern Gothic Adventure

2 years 6 months ago

Details have seemingly been leaked about two new Xbox exclusives from Compulsion Games (We Happy Few) and Obsidian Entertainment (The Outer Worlds), the former of which is described as a single-player "southern gothic adventure."

According to Windows Central, Compulsion's first game with Microsoft is codenamed Midnight. It is reportedly a third-person game set in a dark and fantastical world. The protagonist, seen below in the middle section of the concept art, is a dark-skinned woman with braided hair. The picture on the right shows a harpy creature going through various stages of transformation. The picture on the left looks like it could be a harpy nest.

Midnight apparently draws its inspirations from America's deep south and is a "coming of age" story. It is also a solely single-player game. It apparently won't be ready for an official reveal or launch until the next few years, however. Last month, the We Happy Few developer mentioned that it was working on a new third-person, story-driven title and Midnight certainly seems to fit the bill.
