New Glimpse at Project Awakening & Its Powerful Cyllista Engine Showcased by Cygames

2 years 5 months ago

Today Cygames hosted a panel at its Tech Conference discussing the Cyllista Game Engine that is being used for its still mysterious JRPG codenamed Project Awakening.

We get to take a look at a brief teaser demonstrating how the engine builds the game’s open world, and then a few clips of the terrain and foliage system in action.

You can watch them below. At the bottom of the post you can also find the relevant slides of the presentation, showcasing more images.

We learn that the engine is geared toward production efficiency, enabling the efficient creation and editing of terrain on a vast scale, both for close-up views and for distant vistas, the same goes for foliage.

It also includes tools that let developers quickly update the terrain directly in the game, alongside the placement of foliage.

Azur Lane Getting Charming Ying Swei Figure by Neonmax

2 years 5 months ago

Azur Lane’s popularity has been drawing the attention of hobby manufacturers and another figure has been made available for pre-order.

The figure, produced by Neonmax, portrays the Chinese shipgirl Ying Swei, who was introduced in the game to celebrate the Lunar New Year in January 2021.

You can pre-order her at Ami Ami for 21,780 yen, which translates approximately into $191.

The prototype is sculpted by CKB and painted by Hiiro (scarlet). The scale is 1/7 for an approximate height of 30 mm.

She’s inspired directly by Ying Swei’s main illustration in the game, so the pose should prove pretty much familiar to players who haven’t missed the event in which she was available.

The release is a year away, as she’ll ship in November 2022. In the meanwhile, you can check out what the prototype looks like below.

Xbox Creator Shares A Nice Message Ahead Of 20th Anniversary Thanking Fans For Their Support

2 years 5 months ago

Seamus Blackley, the father of the Xbox who is now better known for baking ancient bread, has shared a message ahead of the 20th anniversary of Xbox.

Posting on Twitter, Blackley said said the team who helped design and release the Xbox only are owed about 40% of the credit for the success of the console. "The real people who made Xbox successful are gamers and fans. You guys, " Blackley said. "Without the support of the people who took the risk to buy the thing, it never could have succeeded."

"And buying an Xbox and being an Xbox fan--convincing your mom, your boyfriend, your girlfriend that it was OK to have an Xbox, to have a console from the company that made Excel, was a big deal," he added. "Especially in 2000. It wasn't obvious. It was something, you know, that took some intestinal fortitude to be an Xbox fan. And I really appreciate that. The credit is yours. So thank you."

Call of Duty: Vanguard - a tech marvel marred by bugs and stuttering issues

2 years 5 months ago

The release of Call of Duty: Vanguard is a contentious one - but on a technological level, it's a return for the brilliant Modern Warware 2019 engine (known internally as IW8), enhanced and expanded upon to accommodate the ambitious of Sledgehammer Games' latest offering. There are engine advances designed specifically for multiplayer, but for my money, it's the campaign that is the star of the show. Telling the story of an elite squadron delivered via set-piece after set-piece, the technology shines thanks to brilliant materials work, stunning lighting and remarkable volumetrics. IW8 was always designed to scale across the generations - and the end result is a highly polished result on the new wave of machines, albeit with some oddities and blemishes that the developers should address.

Is Mere Availability The Key To Success For PS5 And Xbox Series X This Generation?

2 years 5 months ago

In the past, a game console's success in competing against other major systems was based on a few recurring factors. They were the obvious ones--game lineup, price, unique features, power--but this generation is already a lot different. After a full year, both the Xbox Series X and the PS5 remain nearly impossible to find, even for those vigilantly waiting on Walmart and Best Buy pages for the latest supply to go on sale. Continued parts shortages and shipping issues exacerbated by the global pandemic have kept supply far below demand, making any public sales figures for the systems less about which is more popular and more about which company could make the most. With no end in sight for some of the key factors contributing to the consoles' scarcity, their mere availability could be a metric for success this generation.

Back in April, I wrote a piece detailing why both the Xbox Series X and PS5 were so difficult to find--about five months after the consoles launched. At the time, it was already an unusually long period of scarcity for the systems, and nothing has changed since then. For context, a graph of search interest for both "Xbox One stock" and "PS4 stock" shows a big peak in November 2013, followed by a fairly sharp decline that had bottomed out by the end of winter. From that point on, finding an Xbox One or PS4 wasn't all that difficult. If the local Walmart didn't have one, the local Target, Best Buy, or GameStop probably did.

Boba Fett Will Join Fortnite In December

2 years 5 months ago

Fortnite and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett are having a crossover in December as Boba Fett himself, and possibly Fennec Shand, will be joining the Item Shop as outfits.

As revealed by Fortnite's Twitter on Disney+ Day, we get an image of Boba Fett and Fennec Shand on what was once Jabba's Throne and has now been claimed by the iconic bounty hunter. The Tweet says, "Boba Fett will be making his arrival on the Island December 24, 2021 at 7pm ET! #DisneyPlusDay."

While it doesn't specifically say that Shand will be joining as well, she appears prominently in the image with a Shield Potion and a potential Emote of the Mandalorian symbol of a Mythosaur. Also teased in the image is the Tusken Raider's Gaffi Stick, which will most likely join the Item Shop as a Pickaxe.

This crossover will happen just a few days before Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett premieres on Disney+ on December 29, 2021. It also follows the addition of The Mandalorian and Grogu to Fortnite from last year.

2 years 5 months ago

The first season of Game Informer’s Video Gameography explores the history of the Metroid series. After running down Samus' 2D outings, we’re ready to venture into the world of 3D with Metroid Prime.

Released on November 17, 2002 for Nintendo's Gamecube, Metroid Prime is often considered one of the best games of its era. However, to better understand Metroid Prime's influence we first have to go back to the tumultuous founding of Retro Studios. In order to develop Metroid Prime, Retro canceled four other projects, and even then many of its designers almost didn't survive development. In the end, Retro created a total masterpiece that feels ahead of its time. Join us as we talk about Retro's struggles, why Shigeru Miyamoto felt that the morph ball was essential to the formula, and how we almost saw Kraid in 3D.

Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves), Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and special guest, Game Informer's own Blake Hester (@metallicaisrad) for the next hour as we explore Metroid Prime's lore, development history, and lasting impact.

20 Years Later, Metal Gear Solid 2 Is Still A Masterclass In Misdirection

2 years 5 months ago

Picture the scene: It's the dawn of a new century, E3 2000 is in full swing, and the one game stealing all of the attention at that event is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. A direct sequel to the landmark game that debuted on the PS1 in 1998, game director Hideo Kojima and publisher Konami's follow-up was announced with a trailer that had everyone talking.

It was nine minutes of next-gen PS2 gameplay and impressive cinematics, a showcase of Sony's upcoming console that featured Solid Snake performing his trademark tactical espionage actions while he was being hunted by mercenaries across a rain-soaked freighter ship. Hype was building up, fans dialed up their expectations for the return of Solid Snake to 11, and a demo of the game that came with Hideo Kojima's mechnificent Zone of the Enders saw Metal Gear Solid 2 mania reach critical mass.
