Review Roundup For NHL 22

2 years 6 months ago

NHL 22, the ice hockey league simulation, released on October 15. Though GameSpot didn't do a review of our own for NHL 22, we've rounded up other critics' reviews below. You can check them out to see if NHL 22 is worth your time and money.

NHL 22 is the first in the series to run on EA's Frostbite--now used for almost all EA games--making the gameplay smoother than previous NHL games. Next-gen visuals and new X-Factor abilities headlined NHL 22's release.

Generally, reviewers had a favorable impression of NHL 22's gameplay and stated that fans of the franchise's previous iterations would like NHL 22. But some critics wondered if the $60 price tag attached was reasonable for a game that is quite similar to NHL 21.

You can check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic for a more detailed breakdown of reviews around the web.

PlayStation 5 Was Best-Selling Console In U.S. Last Month, Ending Nintendo Switch’s 33-Month Streak

2 years 6 months ago

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in the U.S. this September, both in terms of units sold and dollars made, ending the Nintendo Switch’s 33-month streak at the number one spot.

NPD Group executive director Mat Piscatella released the September 2021 U.S. numbers of video game sales, which is where news of the PS5’s top spot was revealed. Piscatella says the PS5 is the best-selling console of 2021 year-to-date in dollars, although the Switch still leads the year in actual units sold.

The PS5 costs more than the Switch, so it doesn’t need to sell as many units as the Switch to rake in the most money. This is why the Switch has sold more units but made less money compared to the PS5. Before today, November 2018 was the last month that a console other than the Switch – the PlayStation 4 in this case – was the best-selling hardware platform.

Halloween-Themed Nightmare Update Coming To Call Of Duty Mobile

2 years 6 months ago

Season 9 of Call of Duty Mobile gears up for Halloween with the upcoming Nightmare event, which arrives on October 21 at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. Activision has released the holiday event details in a new blog that showcases a new weapon, spooky modes, a new battle pass, and more.

Nightmare's Trick-or-Treat event is vaguely detailed as an event that awards candy for completing in-game tasks. Earning candy grants event XP, which progresses players through event tiers for rewards.

Nightmare Battle Pass

As usual, the new battle pass will include free and premium items like more operators, a new weapon, and plenty of cosmetics. Most importantly, Nightmare adds a new operator skill and gun within the free tiers of the battle pass. Minecraft's Upcoming Allay Mob Will Help You Collect Items Following Fan Vote

2 years 6 months ago

Minecraft fans voted, and the results are in--the Allay will be heading to Minecraft in a future update.

The vote came as part of Minecraft Live 2021, an annual celebration and livestream where developer Mojang typically reveals details about future updates coming to the game. For the last several years it has also included a mob vote, where fans get to choose one of three possible new mobs to be introduced into the game at a later date.

This year's vote came down between the Copper Golem, the Glare, and the Allay. Each had special mechanics they could have brought to the game if they were to win the vote, but it was ultimately the Allay that claimed victory. A blue fairy-like creature, the Allay will actually help players hunt down items, which could be useful in all kinds of situations. Handing the Allay an item will cause it to look for and pick up items of that same type in the overworld. Allay's apparently love music, and will drop discovered items at a nearby note block. Mojang notes that the Allay won't go searching through chests for items, so you'll still have to do that yourself.

Steam Deck Verification Program Lets You Know How Games Will Run On Steam Deck

2 years 6 months ago

Valve released a Steam Deck Verification Program that will help players know if a game runs seamlessly on the company's bite-sized handheld PC or not. There are four categories of ratings in the verification program: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown.

Verified means you can immediately play the game on Steam Deck, Playable means that there might be some tweaking needed on the user's side, Unsupported means the game is non-functional on Deck, and Unknown means Valve hasn't checked the game for Deck compatibility yet. The examples Valve gave for the Playable category are needing players to "manually select a community controller config" or "use the touchscreen to navigate a launcher," and the like.

These ratings will be communicated through corresponding badges that will show up on the bottom left corner of a game's thumbnail on Steam, as shown below. If you're specifically looking for games that have the Verified badge, there will be a "Great On Deck" tab in the Deck's Steam store.

Apex Legends' next hero is Titanfall 2's formidable simulacrum Ash

2 years 6 months ago

Two and a half months after the arrival of Apex Legends' season ten hero Seer, it's time to do the official dance of welcoming once more, as developer Respawn Entertainment formally introduces the free-to-play shooter's next new playable character, Ash.

Ash should be immediately recognisable to fans of Respawn's previous work, given the formidable simulacrum played a prominent role in Titanfall 2 - but should also be familiar to Apex Legends players too, having been restored during Season 5's Broken Ghost quest.

Apple Announced New Macbook Pros With Much Faster M1 Chips

2 years 6 months ago

When Apple announced its first in-house M1 chips for its MacBook Air and Macbook 13-inch, it was clear that the company still had some work to do replacing Intel for its more power-hungry users. It took some time, but today Apple revealed not one, but two new versions of the M1 chip alongside two new MacBook pro models, both of which feature big design changes. Both the 14 and 16-inch Macbook Pros are available to preorder now ahead of their October 26 release date. The 14-inch Macbook Pro will start at $2,000, while the 16-inch model starts at $2,500.

Additionally, the new 14 and 16-inch models come with a lot more ports, including HDMI out, an SD card reader, three Thunderbolt ports, and the return of the MagSafe charger. This new MagSafe 3 can charge either laptop up to 50% in just 30 minutes, says Apple.

Ubisoft May Have Leaked Rainbow Six Extraction's New Release Date

2 years 6 months ago

Ubisoft's PvE-focused Rainbow Six Siege spin-off, Rainbow Six Extraction, looks to be releasing on January 20, 2022, if an official blog post that briefly revealed the new date before being updated is to be believed.

Via Video Games Chronicle, a Ubisoft blog post originally posted in June 2021 about Rainbow Six Extraction was updated to include the new release date, but has since been updated once again to remove it. The blog now only reads that the game is coming in January, with no specific date attached.

Rainbow Six Extraction, formerly known as Rainbow Six Quarantine, was originally set to release in September 2021 before being delayed. The title sees various operators from Ubisoft's popular PvP-shooter unite to overcome an alien threat known as the Archæans. Though it includes many of the same characters and mechanics from Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft isn't worried about the two games cannibalizing each other's audiences. Rainbow Six Extraction creative director Patrik Méthé told GameSpot each game has its own unique set of challenges and pacing and that Extraction will appeal to a wide variety of players.

The Crysis Trilogy Is Back and Better Than Ever

2 years 6 months ago

The Crysis series has consistently delivered some of the most beautiful and impressive first-person shooters available on any platform, and now, Crytek is getting ready to bring remastered versions of the main three entries in the franchise to modern platforms with support for resolutions up to 4K, up to 60 FPS, and much more with the release of the Crysis Remastered Trilogy.

The Crysis Remastered Trilogy includes the single-player stories of Crysis 1, Crysis 2, and Crysis 3. For those unfamiliar, Crysis tells the story of special forces soldiers who are outfitted with nanosuits that offer such abilities as greater strength, enhanced speed, improved defense to withstand bullets, and a cloaking skill that makes you near-invisible. While players can choose to purchase each game separately if they already own Crysis Remastered, the Crysis Remastered Trilogy collection will give them all three games for the price of two.

Despite all three games running natively on PS4 and Xbox One instead of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the next-gen consoles’ versions will be optimized via backwards compatibility to “play smoother and better than ever before.” For example, the Crysis Remastered Trilogy will feature resolutions up to 4K and up to 60 FPS thanks to Dynamic Resolution.

On PC, players will be able to lock their frame rate to whatever they choose and, if their rig can support it, select Max Settings to see the most advanced tech Crytek has to offer on display.

The original Crysis Remastered was released in 2020 and the PC version included ray tracing alongside “high-quality textures up to 8K, HDR support, temporal anti-aliasing, Screen Space Directional Occlusion (SSDO), Global Illumination (SVOGI), state-of-the-art depth fields, new

Microsoft Flight Simulator F-104, Brussels Airport, Incheon, & Sandane Get New Screenshots & Videos; Warsaw Modlin Released

2 years 6 months ago

Third-party developers have shared plenty of juicy assets of upcoming add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator, while an airport has been released.

We also get a video of the TF-104G Starfighter from Sim Skunk Works, showing a landing pattern.

Next is something truly innovative from Aerosoft and developer Jo Erlend, who is always willing to push the envelope.

At last, an external module created by Aerosoft makes proper VDGS functional at the gates of Brussels Airport (EBBR) in Belgium, breaking another “it can’t be done” myth.

“This allows for a highly functional VDGS with airport-specific custom stopping points based on aircraft types.

It is still in active development, currently, 3 different system types have been created and the module is highly flexible and expandable.

Activation or changing which VDGS is active is done through a UI menu.

This feature is not only limited to Brussels, but is also planed for upcoming Aerosoft airports.”

Apex Legends' Newest Character Was First Introduced In Titanfall 2

2 years 6 months ago

A character originally introduced in Titanfall 2 is coming to Apex Legends as its newest playable character.

Ash is a Simulacrum Pilot from Titanfall 2. Her other identity is Dr. Ashleigh Reid, who was turned into a Simulacrum after betraying her fellow scientists and getting stabbed in the process. Reid has also already appeared in Apex Legends as the announcer for the Arenas mode. Along with the new champion, there will be new weapons like the C.A.R. SMG, which is also a callback to the Titanfall series.

You can check out Ash's full reveal trailer below.

The new playable character is coming as part of Apex Legends' newest season, called Escape. We don't yet know how Ash will control, as Respawn said it will reveal more details for the season in the coming days. The end of today's trailer announced a launch trailer for the new season coming this Thursday, October 21.

While the Titanfall franchise is living on through Apex Legends, it seems a sequel to Titanfall 2 may not happen any time soon. Last year, we learned that no new Titanfall games were in development. Then, despite Titanfall 3 popping up in the GeForce Now leak, Titanfall's community coordinator said Respawn was working on "too many other games" to make a new Titanfall.

Mass Effect Fan Gives Squadmates a Hollow Knight Makeover

2 years 6 months ago

On the surface, Mass Effect and Hollow Knight could not be more different games. One is sci-fi alien space opera while the other goes deep underground, exploring a unique society of bug-like creatures. Despite their differences, one fan of both series decided to combine each of their styles.

As you can see in the post below, Twitter user LeafJuly created the Mass Effect 1 squadmates and Saren using an art style that is almost identical to what you see in Hollow Knight.

The results are amazing, featuring everything from an adorable Ummu-like version of Liara to a creepy Mantis-like rendition of Saren. According to the author, they plan on doing Mass Effect 2 characters next.

If you’d like to check out more from them while you wait, head on over to their Tumblr page here. There, you’ll find plenty of other amazing content, including lots of Mass Effect and Hollow Knight-themed art.

PS5 Screenshots Now Shareable In PlayStation App For Select Regions

2 years 6 months ago

Sony is rolling out a limited-release PS5 beta feature where players can share in-game screenshots and video clips through the PlayStation app. It is currently limited to Canada and Japan only, so if you're a US player reading this, you can't access the feature (yet).

How it works: After enabling the auto-upload feature on the PS5, game screenshots and videos taken on the PS5 will automatically get uploaded to the PlayStation app. The media will then be available in the app for 14 days, and from the app, players can download the photos to their camera roll and post them to social media. Video captures will also include audio from the players' mics, if enabled. There are limitations: Videos must be under three minutes long and non-4K. Trophy moments and Activity Challenge auto-captures will not be uploaded.

iOS users in Canada and Japan can now immediately download the update to their PlayStation app and access the screenshot sharing function. Android users will need to wait: The release will be "phased and may take one week" until Android devices can get the update.

Exclusive: Here's how you'll know which games will run on Valve's Steam Deck

2 years 6 months ago

Valve have always maintained that the Steam Deck is closer to a conventional PC than a handheld console, and as such should be able to run your existing library of games on Steam. But while the official Steam Deck Twitter is full of videos showing games performing well on dev kits, the compatibility status of many more games remains up in the air. That could just be through a lack of confirmation, or it could be deep-lying technical issues relating to hardware requirements or anti-cheat services that needed tweaks to work on the Deck’s Proton-based OS. Ahead of the planned December launch, Valve have unveiled their plan to bring clarity on whether specific games will be able to run (and run effectively) on the Steam Deck.

Square Enix Reveals Why Kingdom Hearts On Switch Will Be Limited to the Cloud

2 years 6 months ago

The Kingdom Hearts series is coming to Nintendo Switch, but there's a catch: the beloved games will only be available on Nintendo's hybrid console through cloud versions. Now, we're learning why Square Enix hasn't committed to full downloadable versions on Switch.

Speaking to Nintendo Life, series producer Ichiro Hazama said the decision to make cloud versions of Kingdom Hearts was due to the Switch's storage capacity.

"For some time, our director Tetsuya Nomura had expressed his desire to deliver the Kingdom Hearts series to Nintendo Switch players, him having seen and heard the demand, and so a great deal of consideration went into this internally," Hazama said. "Bringing these titles to Nintendo Switch proved to be quite difficult for various reasons, including the storage capacity of the hardware, but we’re excited that we were able to make it happen for the first time ever by utilizing the Cloud service."

Kingdom Hearts III, for example, needed a lot of storage space to install on PS4 and Xbox One, a feat that may not be easy to pull off on Switch. However, Hazama also said they haven't completely ruled out production for native versions of some of the Kingdom Hearts games on Switch.

"At this moment in time, the production of a native version is undecided," Hazama said. "We believe that the Cloud version is currently the best way to deliver the Kingdom Hearts series to Nintendo Switch players, but we are always excited to hear to feedback from our fans and want to thank them for all their support."
