Blank screens and a bad neck: hands-on with the Samsung Odyssey Ark monitor

1 year 7 months ago

While mooching around Samsung’s Gamescom booth, waiting for their 990 Pro SSD reveal, I took the opportunity to play with an altogether more unusual addition to their hardware catalogue. The Samsung Odyssey Ark, for the unfamiliar, is a kind of all-in-one entertainment screen: a mammoth 55in Mini LED panel that can act as a desktop gaming monitor or living room TV, complete with honking great speakers and built-in support for all the big game streaming services so you can play on it without a PC or console. Unlike other monitors of this magnitude, it can also rotate into portrait mode, leaving the top curve towering over you like an unsympathetic Victorian headmaster.

I actually enjoy a touch of design madness creeping into the occasional piece of PC gear, regardless of whether it can hang with the best gaming monitors that sensible people might buy. What I experienced with the Odyssey Ark, however, was a device that too often veered onto the wrong side of senseless – when it was even working properly.

The next Assassin’s Creed game is called Mirage, rumours claim

1 year 7 months ago

Back in February, Alice O. highlighted an expansion planned for Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla that’s reportedly being spun-off into a standalone stealth game. At the time the project was being referred to as Rift, but multiple sources are now saying the game will be called Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. Both Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb say they’ve been told by people familiar with the game that Mirage is accurate.

New World's first expansion Brimstone Sands promises an early game revamp

1 year 7 months ago

New World is getting its first major expansion in the form of Brimstone Sands, an arid endgame location for players to contest that comes bundled with a bunch of early game streamlining, and a brand-new weapon, too. I got hands-on with the expansion's first hour or so and had a chat with the game's creative director about it all. One year on, is it everything the game needs to satisfy long-time fans and attract newcomers? Yes! Well. Maybe...?

Victoria 3's Pop system is so detailed that your country basically doesn't need you around

1 year 7 months ago

I'm going to level with you: I'm not a GSG player. I play strategy, sure, but grand strategy has always been a bit beyond me. I'm a fundamentally un-grand person; I spend most days dressed like a 14-year-old fan of Tony Hawk, I do not like olives or scallops, and I'm unable to predict the consequences of actions if they exist outside of, say, a 12 month timeframe. A game like Victoria 3, where the whole point is making decisions that have country-wide effects and outcomes years in the future, is essentially operating in a different language to any I understand.

I'm trying to learn new languages, though, so it's not an unwelcome challenge. The problem is that previewing Victoria 3 is quite an advanced level to dive in, the Paradox GSG equivalent of being a live translator for a UN summit when you're only just about able to read the French version of The Famous Five. In a presentation before I and others were let loose on the better part of a week with the game, it was claimed that Victoria 3 is the best yet for onboarding newcomers, with a deep and detailed tutorial system. And to that I say: kinda. Luckily, the AI in Victoria 3 is so advanced it's better at playing the game than I am.

Umino Okami Explores Myths and History of Yamagata, Japan

1 year 7 months ago

umino okami

Mamoru “zuga” Kano’s Umino Okami, which he made himself using Unreal Engine 5, has appeared at Yamagata Biennale 2022 as a playable display. The Yamagata Biennale is an art festival held every two years by the Tohoku University of Art and Design.

The game puts the player in the paws of a wolf, who crosses a lake in search of companions. While the story seems simple, the trailer shows a lot of surreal sights. For example, there are manatees flying through the air, as well as strange spirit-like beings you can encounter.

https://twitter.com/zuga/status/1563428363750232064

The game uses a lot of Yamagata’s history in the story, and the map uses the real Yamagata Prefecture’s geography. Umino Okami specifically focuses on the Mogaumi Legend, which states that there used to be a giant lake in Yamagata. Like how Mogaumi Lake “might have existed,” the usage of wolves in the game is because people say wolves “might have existed” in Yamagata. This idea appears to be the theme of the game, which is why there are fantastical elements in the story.

Square Enix Store Adds Two Cheongsam Dress Tifa Figures

1 year 7 months ago

Square Enix Tifa Cheongsam PlayArts figure

The Square Enix Store has added two new figures of Tifa in her cheongsam dress from FFVII Remake. One figure is part of the poseable Play Arts Kai figure line, while the second is a seated static figure that is part of the Static Arts line. As of writing, both figures are available for pre-order via the Japanese Square Enix Store. Each figure will cost ¥19,580 (about $141) and will release on March 25, 2023.

The Static Arts Tifa figure features the character sitting on a red cushioned chair. The figure has Tifa resting her chin on her hand, her dress drooped over her legs as she looks slightly upwards. It boasts high attention to detail and fabric textures, recreating her appearance from FFVII Remake as closely as possible.

On the other hand, the Play Arts Kai figure allows owners to pose the figure however they wish. Furthermore, it also comes with an interchangeable face part and several hand parts. The dress below the hips is also a separate part from the torso, allowing for better mobility and posing.

Victoria 3 Preview: Grand Strategy, but Make it Grander

1 year 7 months ago

Victoria 3 is the latest grand strategy game from Paradox Development Studios, parking you on the throne, presidential seat, parliament, or oligarchic junta meeting table of a nation from 1836 to 1936. I recently had a week-long hands on with a development build of Victoria 3, and though aspects like user interface and AI weren't finished, what I found was a promising new paradigm for Paradox's niche strategy series.

At its heart, Victoria 3 is like many other grand strategy games: It's for people who like to watch numbers go up. The trick is that this is a game that focuses on building a society and building an economy—it's about the last explosive stage of the industrial revolution that brought on modern wonders like streetlights, trains, cars, and globalized trade.

That is the real strength I found in Victoria 3: It wasn't just army sizes and damage stats when you were looking for numbers to improve. No, I was looking at numbers like jobs created, hammers manufactured, universities built, literacy rates, laws passed, political party approval, loyal citizens, and immigration stats.

It's broadly built around two backbones: Society and economy. Everything else stems from there, and is much more abstract than the manipulation you do around who does what, when, and how well they eat while they're doing it. To address that you engage with a deep and interesting economic simulation that's simultaneously less complex and more believable than others like it.

FIFA 23 Seemingly Just Leaked, a Month Early

1 year 7 months ago

FIFA 23 seemingly leaked today, briefly making the entire game playable - and it may even have revealed some real-life kits that hadn't yet been shown to the public.

According to some players, a pre-load that was sent to those who pre-ordered the game was accidentally made live, allowing Ultimate Edition players to launch and play the upcoming FIFA 23 game. Additionally, the EA Play trial may have gone live early, allowing others to access the game, too.

FIFA 23 isn’t supposed to be playable until September 27.

A number of players were able to load and play the game, with Twitch user mexico07dan1 (via Eurogamer) streaming FIFA 23 before his account was swiftly banned. However, several gameplay clips of the upcoming game remain online.

Stats from this year's FIFA Ultimate Team have also begun to leak:

Big Chungus Might Be Coming to MultiVersus

1 year 7 months ago

Warner Bros. has filed a trademark for the Bugs Bunny meme, Big Chungus, and many think it's for an addition to fighting game MultiVersus.

Per VGC reporter Andrew Marmo, the company has filed a trademark claim for the image of an inflated Bugs Bunny under the name “Big Chungus” – the very name given to him by an unknown Gamestop employee as per the original meme (based on a term coined by games critic Stephanie Sterling).

The trademark, filed on August 26, 2022 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office covers the use of “Big Chungus” and his image across video games, including “video and computer game programs." However, it also includes the use of Big Chungus in motion pictures as well as toys and merch.

MultiVersus fans are convinced that this means the classic Bugs Bunny meme is coming to the studio’s platform-based fighting game.

The design of Big Chungus originated from an old episode of Merrie Melodies in which Bugs Bunny inflates himself to oversized proportions in an effort to mock Elmer Fudd. But he wasn’t named “Big Chungus” until 2018, when a Gamestop employee’s encounter went viral.

Sonic Frontiers Interview – Team Sonic Head Discusses Open-Zone Gameplay, Challenges, & Growing Fanbase

1 year 7 months ago

Sonic Frontiers is coming soon, transporting the popular blue hedgehog into a brand new “open-zone” kind of gameplay.

This is certainly a rather large shift from previous Sonic Games, and to know more, we interviewed Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.

Izuka-san discussed this brave new frontier for Sonic, the challenges it created, the relationship with the team working on the movies, and the growing fanbase they have provided the franchise with.

Giuseppe: I have a feeling that it has been less challenging, as of late, to satisfy the fans with 2D Sonic, while it has been more difficult for 3D Sonic games to make the fanbase happy. Your team always appears to be trying to look for new things and to find the right recipe to make that happen. Are you confident that this is the right one, the one that’s finally gonna make the fans happy?

Takashi Iizuka: Sonic Frontiers represents the modern Sonic kind of gameplay. It’s in the 3D format that we’ve taken to the next level and evolved that 3D game experience, turning it into what we have for Sonic Frontiers. The 2D gameplay has 30 years of history and it’s that classic original content that we understand the fans like and appreciate.

We have a good understanding of what they like about 2D Sonic. And actually, we did release Sonic Origins this year which is that 2D offering for those fans that really appreciate that content.

But when we talk about trying to get the fans happy about the content we provide, we never try to release one game that’s going to get our 2D fans and our 3D fans happy at the same time

When we released Sonic Forces, we also had Sonic Mania. We had a 3D game offering and a 2D game offering. This year as well, we’re doing the same thing.

Sonic Team Head Believes 2022 Will Be the Biggest Year Ever for Sonic

1 year 7 months ago

Sonic the Hedgehog is going to have a really strong 2022 according to Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka.

Twinfinite talked to the veteran developer at Gamescom 2022, and he mentioned that the second Sonic movie has been really successful and has ushered many people into the fanbase of the franchise.

On top of that, Sonic Origins was released right after that, while Sonic Frontiers will come on November 8, to which we have to add the Netflix TV show Sonic Prime.

Over the past 31 years, according to Iizuka-san, there has never been so much content coming for the fans of the franchise.

Due to that, he believes that “2022 is going to be the biggest year for Sonic.”

He also added that Sonic Origins is the perfect game for new fans who have just seen the movies so far and want to experience what made dedicated gamers fall in love with the franchise.

On the other hand, he believes that Sonic Frontiers is going to be “an amazing game” for those hardcore gamers who have already played many Sonic titles.

Of course, you should stay tuned on Twinfinite for the full interview, in which Iizuka-san talks in more detail about Sonic Frontiers.

ORX review early access: a moreish tower defence roguelike that already has strong foundations

1 year 7 months ago

The thrill of a card game is in the hand you get dealt. Luck can either be on your side, or you can earn it back by using your wits, carving out a victory you never thought possible. Other times, it all goes to pot and you get absolutely walloped, but hot damn if you didn't go down fighting. ORX has these moments in spades. Part deckbuilder, part roguelike and part tower defence, this is a real-time strategy game played by the seat of your pants, where a rolling deck of cards determines not only what kind of defences you can build, but also what buffs, spells and additional forces you can deploy to help defend your keep from the oncoming hordes. It's a gripping mix that's already claimed over a dozen hours of my time in recent weeks, and it's a number I can only see going up and up and up as it continues to develop in early access.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Debuts New Trailer and Images Ahead of September Release Date

1 year 7 months ago

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to plug in on September 13, and Netflix has released a new trailer and images to hype up the insane anime adaptation.

Adapted by famed anime studio Trigger, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells an original story set in the Cyberpunk universe. The series is centered around a young street kid who dreams of becoming an edgerunner, or a mercenary outlaw. He seemingly teams up with Lucy, a skilled netrunner looking to escape her past.

While the synopsis might be typical, the trailer is anything but. The art style leans on the abstract and it's very clear that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will have a different tone and vibe from the more serious Cyberpunk 2077 RPG from CD Projekt.

You can check out the NSFW trailer here as well as the new screenshots in the gallery below.

Studio Trigger is a Tokyo-based anime house best known for its expressive style. The studio has made anime like Kill la Kill, SSSS. Gridman, and Little Witch Academia.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a co-production with CD Projekt and therefore a spinoff from Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt's RPG was released in 2020, and while it was an ambitious RPG on PC, the console versions suffered from severe technical issues. Though CDPR has promised to address these with regular updates.

One Piece Card Game Hands-On Preview

1 year 7 months ago

Yohohoho! The One Piece Card Game will make its official global debut this Winter, a few months after the Japanese release. In the meantime, events like Anime Expo and Gen Con are giving fans a little preview before the booster set and starter decks become available worldwide. In addition, the One Piece Card Game tutorial app is available right now for those that can’t wait. Aside from the amazing mix of One Piece art, this Bandai-produced card game has some familiar card mechanics that veteran TCG players may be familiar with.

Gameplay

The gameplay in the One Piece Card Game is pretty standard for TCGs. If you have played Magic The Gathering, Hearthstone, or the Dragon Ball Super card game, these mechanics will be very familiar. With that said, the gameplay can be pretty quick at the moment so there won’t be a lot of matches going to time. The goal is to bring your opponent’s life points down to zero, where you can then deal the final blow. To do that, you will need your leader and character cards to deal damage to your opponent.

Your deck will be built around your leader card. The leader card determines how many life points you have but also will be the main target of your opponent to win the game. It’s very interesting that the leader card will determine your health as most TCGs will have players mirror each other in life points. It’s a little concerning because certain decks thrive on getting damage fast, so lower life leaders are at a disadvantage from the beginning.

Cover Reveal – God of War Ragnarök

God of War Ragnarok Game Informer Cover Reveal

God of War Ragnarök is set to conclude the Norse era of the series, a saga that’s seen Kratos atone for his troubling past by becoming a more conscientious god and (mildly) affectionate father. In the upcoming sequel, Kratos and Atreus must stave off a preordained catastrophe, calling on old and new friends to succeed against Asgard and, hopefully, prevent all-out war.

I spoke with God of War veteran and newly appointed director Eric Williams as well as some lead UX, combat, and level designers about their experience crafting the long-awaited sequel and the most significant changes coming to the action and exploration loops. Moreover, you’ll learn about Kratos’ tools/toys, a never-before-seen dwarven realm that feels lived in, the unprecedented number of accessibility features available at launch, and some quality-of-life updates, including new navigation mechanics.

Of course, that’s not all. We’ve got other God of War content for your perusal, including a ranking of our five favorite bosses from the franchise. Additionally, Alex Van Aken attended Evo, favorably comparing the storied event to the Olympics. Marcus Stewart got hands-on time with the next entry in the most prominent fighting franchise of all time, Street Fighter 6. There are even a few fantastic freelance pieces – one, for instance, documents the meticulous creation of a Cuphead boss fight. And if you’re wondering what big games are on the horizon, we’ve got you covered with preview pages dedicated to Square Enix’s role-playing farming sim, Harvestella, Game Freak’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and so much more.

Shovel Knight Dig's "ever-changing chasm of mystery" opens in September

1 year 7 months ago

Spade-wielding platform hero Shovel Knight will be embarking on a brand-new adventure on 23rd September, when Shovel Knight Dig launches for Steam, Switch, and Apple Arcade.

Shovel Knight Dig, a collaboration between Yacht Club Games and UK studio Nitrome, feels like it's been a long time coming, having first been revealed all the way back in 2019 - when Yacht Club explained it would take players deep into an "ever-changing chasm of mystery".

More specifically, it'll pit Shovel Knight against Drill Knight and his digging crew in a quest that'll see adventurers jumping, slashing, and tunnelling their way downward through stages procedurally stitched together from "thousands" of level chunks in a bid to reach the bottom.

Ubisoft's guitar learning subscription service Rocksmith+ out next week on PC

1 year 7 months ago

Rocksmith+, the new subscription service version of Ubisoft's long-running guitar learning series, finally has a release date and is coming to PC next Tuesday, 6th September.

Nearly twelve months later, Rocksmith+ is finally ready for release and will launch next week via the Ubisoft Store, promising a range of tools to help players hone their music skills. These include interactive lessons featuring Adaptive Difficulty - said to dynamically adjust to a player's skill level while they play - and the Rocksmith+ Connect app for iOS and Android, which will take care of note detection and real-time feedback without the need for any peripherals.
