Square Enix shutting down Deep Insanity: Asylum

Square Enix has announced that it will shut down Deep Insanity: Asylum on October 31, 2022, at 12:00 JST. The company has also disabled real money purchases for the in-game currency at the same time it announced the Japan-exclusive game's end of service.

The Lost Child anime show ran through one full season with twelve episodes aired on Japanese television from October to December 2021. The Nirvana manga only had four volumes, with the last one released in March 2022, and a new chapter has not shown up in the 9th volume of Monthly Big Gangan magazine published in Japan in late August 2022.

God of War Ragnarök's Combat Lets You 'Play With Your Food'

1 year 7 months ago

God of War Ragnarok Combat

Lead combat designers Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh have over 17 years of God of War experience shared between them, and both played prominent roles in the previous game’s success. The series’ current direction is inspired by an old studio motto: Playing with your food.

“That’s an internal philosophy that we’ve had since back in the day,” Sheth says. “Kratos plays with his food. We tried to create systems you want to engage with that are fun, very playful, lots of different routes. And when we looked at the combat in the last game, we were like, ‘We can push this further; we can find new toys and ways of playing with enemies and strategies.’ That’s been the guiding principle more than anything else.”

In a surprise announcement, North American esports organization Sentinels have announced that Tarık “Tarik” Çelik has been signed to the organization.

Tarik has had a storied career in esports. Starting his competitive career in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Tarik competed in the North American scene for 7 years. Tarik retired from CS:GO in 2021 and pursued a career in content creating. Being a big name in the Counter-Strike scene helped him rack up a large following, but when he fully committed to playing Valorant later that year, his streams exploded in popularity. Kevin Smith Wants to Make a Sequel to One of His Weirdest Horror Comedy Films

1 year 7 months ago

All the way back in 2014, Kevin Smith made a film called Tusk. This horror comedy centers around a man named Howard Howe (Michael Parks) who ends up turning a podcaster named Wallace Bryton (Justin Long) into a walrus. The concept was odd and interesting, and even fans of the beloved director were confused by the film.

Critics and general audiences alike didn’t care for the flick, with it tallying disapproving review scores of 45 and 36 percent, respectively, while also failing to make its budget of $3 million back, grossing just $1.9 million at the box office. Yet it must hold a special place deep in the heart of Smith, because he wants to make a sequel to it.

Speaking recently with SlashFilm, Long discussed Smith’s earnest desire to embark on Tusk 2, saying:

“He texted us all the other day, Haley [Joel Osment] and Genesis [Rodriguez], and he told us that he wanted to do it, and I thought it was a joke. And then I realized he was being serious. And then one of the [other] interviewers said, ‘Yeah, he said the same to me.'”

This isn’t the first time Smith has discussed the potential for Tusk 2. Two years ago, during a Twitch stream, the Clerks director had this to say, via Bloody Disgusting:

Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Witcher: How You Can (and Can't) Adapt Famous Fantasies To Games

1 year 7 months ago

As a 12-year-old Christian Cantamessa sat in bed and read The Lord of the Rings, he never imagined having the chance to one day create his own story set in Tolkien’s world with Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Nor could Brad Kane, as he walked down the aisle on his wedding day to the Game of Thrones theme tune, picture himself writing a Westerosi tale of his own through the Telltale series. And the same goes for CD Projekt Red’s Marcin Blacha and Magdalena Zych, who as kids read Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher books - Wiedźmin in the original Polish, where it’s practically required reading.

These writers have each created video game stories set in established and beloved fantasy epics, but despite the opportunities to do so being fantasies in themselves - genuine dreams come true - there are myriad challenges and pressures that come alongside.

Take The Lord of the Rings, for example. J.R.R. Tolkien created an entire plane of existence with its own history, myth, politics, and so on. He did so not only through the main series of novels but through countless smaller stories and unfinished tales, not to mention the immense amount of adaptations that have added layers upon layers of lore.

How High on Life Unexpectedly Stole Gamescom

1 year 7 months ago

Update: A previous version of this story listed High on Life numbers as 33.5 million video views, and 77.6 million impressions. This included views and impressions for content posted prior to Gamescom. This has now been adjusted so that the numbers listed are just for content posted during Gamescom.

A week after Gamescom kicked off with Opening Night Live on August 23, it’s pretty clear that the unexpected hit of the show on social media was High on Life from Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland’s Squanch Games. Set for release on December 13 for PC and Xbox, it’s a first-person shooter wrapped in the same kind of darkly-comedic weirdness seen in Roiland’s previous games like Trover Saves the Universe and Accounting. Squanch Games’ creative director Mikey Spano describes it as “Bladerunner if Jim Henson did it,” and compares the bounty hunting gameplay to Metroid Prime. Tonally, it’s an acquired taste, and honestly it wasn’t on our Gamescom bingo card of games we thought we’d be talking about right now.

On IGN channels alone, content about High on Life has seen over 24 million video views, and a staggering 56 million impressions

A week after Gamescom, on IGN channels alone, content about High on Life has seen over 24 million video views, and a staggering 56 million impressions (“impressions” are a measure of how many people have seen posts about the game in their social feeds.) By comparison, Dune Awakening – the next most popular title we covered – saw just 8.6 million impressions.

Is Halo: Infinite’s Campaign Open-World? Full Halo Infinite Map Size

1 year 7 months ago

Halo: Infinite is the sixth main installment in Microsoft’s flagship first-person shooter franchise. Released for the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC in Dec. 2021, it promised to be a “soft reboot” of the franchise after the disappointment of 2015’s Halo 5: Guardians.

Between offering its multiplayer as a free-to-play option and major campaign improvements, Halo: Infinite brings the series closer to its peak than 343’s previous attempt did. Some may wonder if Halo: Infinite offers an open world, or more linear, level-based gameplay.

Is Halo: Infinite Open-World?

It may be surprising to learn, but Halo: Infinite is the first time the series has delivered an open-world experience. There are still linear sections that act as main story missions, but these are accessed by traversing Zeta Halo, the game’s open world.

343 Industries has never released an official size of the Zeta Halo open world. It appears, though, that Halo: Infinite’s map is on the smaller end compared to other open-world games in AAA franchises. Shortly after Infinite’s release, it was reported that its map was initially on a scale similar to that of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, due to development problems, 343 cut down the map by about two-thirds of that game’s size to streamline its production.

Realm Royale Ranks and Ranking System, Explained

1 year 7 months ago

Realm Royale Reforged features four distinct classes to play, mixed together with battle royale mechanics to create a unique experience. It’s a welcome change to the battle royale formula, due to the nature of each class having their own abilities that encourage certain playstyles. Of course, Realm Royale has its own competitive scene, so here’s Realm Royale ranks and ranking system, explained.

Realm Royale Ranks and Ranking System, Explained

Realm Royale has a ranking system that uses a combination of tiers and ranks within said tiers, which are, from lowest to highest:

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Master
  • Grand Master

Excluding Master and Grand Master, each tier has five ranks that follow a descending order; for example, you start at Bronze V and work your way up to Bronze I, then the cycle restarts at Silver V, and so on.

How to Rank Up in Realm Royale

Ranking up in Realm Royale is fairly straightforward, and this is because your rating is only determined by your 50 best matches, win or lose, in one particular game mode. That means, in order to improve your rank, you have to increase your average KD per match.

Another great aspect of the ranking system in Realm Royale is how forgiving it is. If you have a few bad games or take a break for a few weeks, you’ll still retain your rank.

Samurai Maiden Reveals its Girls With New Screenshots

1 year 7 months ago

Today D3 Publisher released a new gallery of screenshots of its upcoming “Girls Sword-fighting Action” game Samurai Maiden.

Specifically, we get to see the game’s titular maidens.

Tsumugi Tamaori is our isekai protagonist, transported from the modern era to the Sengoku period. She has been studying the katana since her childhood and she’s single-minded and hot-blooded.

She’s accompanied by three ninjas who support her.

Iyo is a shinobi in service of Oda Nobunaga. She is strong but not very good at being stealthy. Yet, she has tools and weapons hidden all over her body.

Hagane is the older sister-type Ninja and her artificial right arm can extend and shock enemies with electricity.

Komimi is a catgirl ninja who can use Onmyoji powers and wields a giant hammer that she can surround with freezing energy. Her sense of direction sucks so she always gets lost when she’s on her own.

The battle system is centered on Tsumugi, who is extremely strong and can easily dispatch rank-and-file enemies. She can also use powerful special techniques. Yet, she cannot win alone, and she’s supported by the three ninja.

They can use various attacks depending on their weapons and powers. They also have other utility features besides pure attack. For instance, Hagane’s arm can pull enemies and hold them for Tsumugi or even rappel across chasms.

You can check out all the screenshots below.

Samurai Maiden will release this winter for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC both in Japan and in the west.

Marvel Snap’s New Featured Location Allows for Insanely Huge Early Plays

1 year 7 months ago

As the Heroes for Hire season begins to wind down this week, developing studio Second Dinner has hit Marvel Snap players with yet another Featured Location to throw a wrench into their plans. Dubbed Project Pegasus, this new location in the game gives players five extra energy for that turn, and that turn only.

The tagline is “Use it or lose it!” which suggests that players should absolutely make full use of that extra energy before that turn ends, or risk their opponent getting a huge advantage over them. As your max energy only goes up by one with each subsequent turn, getting five extra energy during your first three turns can be absolutely huge, allowing you to play 6-cost cards in those turns when you otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

In the past few weeks, cards like Mr. Negative and Sera have started to dominate the meta, though the potential of those cards are usually only fully realized if players use Magik to extend the game, thus allowing them an extra turn to push more power onto the board. Project Pegasus lets players drop Negative and Sera much earlier, which will also allow them to play the rest of their cards much more efficiently.

Project Pegasus will be the Featured Location for the next couple of days before it shuffles back into the regular rotation, which means that you’ll have a 40% chance of getting it to pop within this time period.

Marvel Snap is now in closed beta on mobile devices.

Ben Kingsley Set to Reprise Role of Trevor Slattery in Marvel’s Wonder Man

1 year 7 months ago

Academy Award-winning actor Ben Kingsley is set to reprise the role of Trevor Slattery in the upcoming MCU Disney+ series Wonder Man, a story that Variety broke. The decision to include the the struggling actor makes sense given that the series will follow Simon Williams, AKA Wonder Man, who also finds himself to be a struggling actor.

Along with this parallel, another reason why the false Mandarin will appear in Wonder Man is likely due to the heavy involvement of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ director, Destin Daniel Cretton. Kingsley and Cretton are the only known connections between Shang-Chi and the Wonder Man series thus far; however, given Cretton’s involvement, there is reason to believe that more links may be in store.

As fans of the MCU may recall, Slattery first appeared in Iron Man 3 as the fake Mandarin and didn’t reappear in the MCU again until last year’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. For those curious about seeing the gap of what was going on with Kingsley’s character between the two films, the Marvel One-Shot, All Hail the King, has the answers for you.

We last saw Trevor Slattery in Ta Lo, where after briefly participating in the film’s final battle, he decided to stay behind with the adorable Morris. If Wonder Man plans on taking place at least sometime after Iron Man 3, this means that Slattery had left Ta Lo at some point –the reason for which will hopefully get explained at some point during the series.

Dream Cycle review – chaotic procgen spellcraft from one of Tomb Raider’s original creators

1 year 7 months ago

Dream Cycle is the first game I've played that puts a fresh spin on Blink, Dishonored's widely imitated short-range teleport spell. Admittedly, it's less about the ability in itself, than how it works with and against the game’s sporadically coherent terrain. In Dishonored, Blink is sort of headshots but for movement, snapping you between points with toe-curling specificity. It takes the stodge out of vertical exploration and edits plodding stealth into a series of catlike pounces. It plays that role in Dream Cycle, too, especially when combined with levitation and silenced SMGs. But it's also, here, a means of spelunking through a world that doesn’t quite want to be explored.

If you've done any caving yourself, you'll be familiar with the mingled temptation and dread when you spot another chamber through a gap you're not sure you can fit through. A beautifully banded sandstone channel, screened by stalactites. A hint of crystal in the dark, or the seductive glimmer of running water. Can you find a way to that glimmer, and rather more importantly, can you make it out again? Dream Cycle is made up of horribly tantalising spaces like these. It’s a third- and first-person action-adventure based on Lovecraft’s own “dream cycle” stories, set in procedurally generated biomes that consist of small, ruined overworlds and a concluding, separately loaded dungeon. You play Morgan Carter (yes, as in Randolph) - a young mage who’s as handy with a sword or pistol as she is a bolt of lightning. She’s searching the Dreamlands for her friend Erin, one of many victims of a mysterious sleeping sickness.
