Who’s the Best Final Fantasy XIV Character?

1 year 11 months ago

best ffxiv character estinien

Final Fantasy XIV has amassed years of worlds and personalities in its decade-ish of life. (People understandably count those years a bit differently!) But which FFXIV character is your favorite? Here are our staff picks.

I am a big fan of Estinien. I think he's hilarious, for one. What he did to Aymeric is amazing. But he's also someone who's gone through a lot of personal growth throughout the storyline. To the point where he's an admirable hero by Endwalker. He's cool! — Jenni

best final fantasy xiv character sadu

There's so much to be said about the FFXIV characters around whom the story revolves, like the Scions and the different leaders of the city-states. But someone that really stood out for me, despite not having a particularly large role in the narrative? Sadu, leader of the Dotharl from Stormblood.

Completely fearless and domineering, she rules the Azim Steppe by weight of presence alone (no matter what Magnai thinks). She's the very definition of a minor character that makes a major impression. It's no mystery why she's incredibly popular among FFXIV fans. — Josh

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Announced, First Trailer and 2023 Release Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

The first trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor premiered as part of Star Wars Celebration. The sequel to Respawn’s critically-acclaimed Star Wars game is set to be released in 2023.

In a brief, cinematic trailer we see Cal Kestis after the events of Jedi: Fallen Order. Where he is still on the run from the Empire. While the trailer is short on plot, it’s got plenty of Star Wars with new inquisitors and new mysteries.

Curiously, Cal who spent the previous game gaining a family of allies is all alone. And his lightsaber which he spent so much time rebuilding appears to fall into the hands of the Empire. Essentially, Cal is in a bad place at the start of Jedi: Survivor.

Respawn’s next Star Wars action RPG will be released on next-gen platforms PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. EA doesn’t make mention of past-gen consoles, but with developers moving towards new-gen systems there’s a good chance Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is too.

The trailer premiered during Star Wars Celebration amid the buzz of new trailers for upcoming Star Wars shows like Andor, and Mandalorian season 3.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's Smallest Hero Will Be A Big Collectible This Holiday

1 year 11 months ago

SPOILERS AHEAD!
If you haven't watched the first episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus, you should avoid going any further. The latest Star Wars collectible announced introduces a new character, and it's unlike anything we've seen in the Star Wars universe. This odd companion appears to be this year's Grogu, and will be turned into a variety of collectibles that will be released this holiday season.

These announcements were made today by toy manufacturer Hasbro, and happened during Star Wars Celebration, a four-day event held in Anaheim, Calif.

The trailers for Obi-Wan Kenobi implied Old Ben would be keeping an eye on Luke Skywalker, but the show is more about his sister at this point. When we first meet Leia, we see she has a companion droid named LOLA (L0-LA59). This tiny, hovering droid is transforming into three different collectibles, one offering functionality that mimics the movements and sounds from the show.

Hasbro's animatronic edition features a touch sensor on LOLA's head that can activate over 45 different light, sound, and movement options. This version retails for $89.99 and will be released in the fall.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Continues Cal Kestis' Quest In 2023

1 year 11 months ago

Day two of Star Wars Celebration 2022 brought the first news of new Star Wars video games, and the announcement has been a long time coming. EA and Respawn Entertainment have officially revealed the sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order. This new title will continue the story of force-wielder Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

A brief teaser trailer was shown with the unveiling, which you can watch above. In it, the odds seem stacked against Cal and what may or may not remain of his crew from Fallen Order. Of the known characters, only Kestis and his trusty droid BD-1 make an appearance in the footage, though their cohort Greez's ship, the Stinger Mantis, is seen from the cockpit, empty and in a bad way in a desert. Other notable characters are the potential antagonist who narrates the trailer and a mysterious person preserved in a tube. No one seems to know who this figure is at the moment (and folks at EA are staying quiet on the subject for now), but their characteristics of what looks to be a fit guy with long silvery floating in a vat of liquid is radiating cool dude energy like Star Wars' version of Sephiroth or Mega Man X's Zero. I already can't wait to find out who it is.

Valve Plans To Address Team Fortress 2's Bot Problem

1 year 11 months ago

Team Fortress 2 remains an extremely popular game with a large active player base, but the last couple of years has seen it overrun by aimbots. A passionate group of fans has long pleaded with developer Valve to address the issue, and the company has finally responded.

Yesterday, the official Team Fortress 2 Twitter account posted a message in response to #SaveTF2, a peaceful campaign of fans working to raise awareness about the game’s rampant bot problem. Basically, bot programs have made the game nearly unplayable for some since they’ll instantly kill players upon loading up into match-ups, giving the bots users an unfair advantage. TF2 players have become increasingly vocal about the problem, but Valve has remained largely silent on the issue (even going quiet on the game’s forums) until posting the following message:

TF2 community, we hear you! We love this game and know you do, too. We see how large this issue has become and are working to improve things.

Valve doesn’t elaborate on how it plans to tackle the problem or when to expect a solution but getting the notoriously quiet company to respond is an accomplishment and measure of relief for Team Fortress 2 fans. Hopefully, it results in a substantial response that comes sooner rather than later.

Fallen Order sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor officially announced for 2023

1 year 11 months ago

Following a flurry of recent leaks, EA has officially unveiled Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel. It's called Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and will be out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC some time next year.

While there's little in the way of specifics to accompany today's announcement, EA has confirmed the third-person action-adventure will once again follow the story of Fallen Order protagonist Cal Kestis, albeit five years after the events of the first game.

The teaser trailer released alongside today's announcement doesn't reveal a whole lot more, but we do see Cal, lightsaber in hand and accompanied by trusty robot sidekick BD-1, flexing his action muscles as he remains on the run from the Empire.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords Release Date Announced for Nintendo Switch

1 year 11 months ago

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords will officially be released on Nintendo Switch on June 8, 2022.

The news was shared during Star Wars Celebration, and the teaser trailer gives a glimpse of the game in action and the promise that "Restored Content DLC" is coming soon.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords will soon join Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on Switch, as the original arrived on Nintendo's latest console in November 2021.

The original Knights of the Old Republic is being remade for PS5, but there has been no word as of yet as to whether the sequel will also get the remake treatment.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords was first released on Xbox in 2004 before making its way to PC in 2005.

In our review of KOTOR II: The Sith Lords, we said, "If you like roleplaying games or if you like Star Wars, you'll be hard pressed to find a game as enjoyable as Knights of the Old Republic II. Sure, it's got some technical problems and, sure, it starts fairly slowly but if you can see past those flaws, you're in for one hell of a treat."

Batgirl’s Controversial Gotham Knights Biography Has Been Reworked

1 year 11 months ago

Warner Bros. Montreal has altered Batgirl’s biography in Gotham Knights following backlash about the game’s explanation for her paralysis recovery.

Batgirl AKA Barbara Gordon is one of Gotham Knights’ four playable characters alongside Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood in a story that sees the Bat family defending Gotham after Bruce Wayne’s death. In the 1988 comic story The Killing Joke, Barbara is famously shot through the spine by the Joker, paralyzing and confining her to a wheelchair for many years in which she lent tech and information support to Batman as Oracle. In DC's 2011 New 52 comic reboot, Barbara regains her mobility due to an experimental surgery followed by physical therapy/training.

Per Eurogamer, Gotham Knights’ original website biography for Batgirl vaguely references these events. It doesn’t mention the Joker or a specific culprit, but the offending bit was the implication that Barbara overcame her disability just by training hard. You can read the relevant section of the bio below:

Microsoft Flight Simulator Piper PA-38 Tomahawk Gets New Screenshots; Edmonton Airport Coming in June & Samsø Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

Today third-party developers had a few reveals to share about upcoming aircraft and airport add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

First of all, we get to see new screenshots and a development update for Just Flight’s Piper PA-38 Tomahawk.

“Alongside the much larger and more complex 146 Professional, our development team have also been busy working on the next GA aircraft to join our MSFS fleet – the PA38 Tomahawk, here’s the next update for you.

As with our other MSFS aircraft, the Tomahawk has undergone an extensive upgrade to bring it up to the latest MSFS standards, especially in the areas of modelling and texturing. Work on those areas is very nearly complete as shown in these screenshots, with the focus now shifting to the systems coding, flight dynamics and sounds. Our testing team, including real-world Tomahawk pilots and instructors, have been evaluating all those visual upgrades whilst our sound artist recently spent the day recording a real Tomahawk for the brand new Wwise sound set. It might not be as complex as a 146 but there is still a lot of work and attention to detail required to bring you our best GA aircraft yet!

Please note that default radios are shown here, which are to facilitate testing whilst we work on our custom avionics.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Revealed With New Trailer

1 year 11 months ago

Respawn has officially revealed the long-rumored Star Wars Jedi: Fall Order sequel. Called Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the new game is scheduled for a 2023 release.

Sadly, it seems like Respawn didn't like my suggestion that Merrin should be the protagonist for Fallen Order's sequel, as Survivor will once again star Cal Kestis. As seen in the trailer, most of Cal's allies are notably absent (save for BD-1), including Merrin.

In the trailer, we see Cal meet with a Pau'an (the long-limbed humanoids that Obi-Wan meets on Utapau), which is notably the same species as the Grand Inquisitor--the leader of the Jedi hunters that served under Darth Vader. So this could be the Grand Inquisitor, but that seems unlikely given his role in other Star Wars stories, like Star Wars Rebels.

Cal also faces off against a one-armed cloaked figure wielding a red lightsaber, and encounters an exceptionally pale figure in a bacta tank.

We also get a look at Cal's new lightsaber, which is not the same one he uses at the end of Fallen Order. This new saber only has one blade and lacks the option of being separated into two lightsabers, implying that Cal may lose his original saber at the beginning of Survivor and have to build a new one.

Hot Drop: Apex Legends Falls Short When It Comes To Valkyrie, Wattson, Maggie, And Rampart's Muscles

1 year 11 months ago

Hot Drop is GameSpot's weekly Apex Legends column, in which Jordan Ramée takes a closer look at Respawn's battle royale to provide additional insight into the game's evolution, as well as dive deeper into its episodic storytelling and characters.

Does anyone else notice something strange about Apex Legends' Valkyrie, Wattson, Mad Maggie, and Rampart? Like, it's weird that four of the legends that shoulder some of the heaviest equipment in the game are, at the same time, some of the thinnest, right? It kind of feels like those four need buffs to their actual stature.

In Valkyrie, Wattson, and Rampart's case, all three legends are carrying what looks to be exceptionally heavy equipment on their backs at all times. Wattson carries around her cumbersome-looking Interception Pylon, Rampart is lugging around this massive minigun, and Valkyrie has a jetpack that utilizes the repurposed flight core of a Titan.

I could maybe buy that Valkyrie's jetpack is always passively on, providing just enough lift to alleviate some of the burden that she's carrying without actually taking her skyward. But even then, wouldn't she still need to be exceptionally fit to repeatedly go back-and-forth between crouching and standing with such a heavy piece of equipment resting on her shoulders? And there's probably quite a bit of force exerted onto her when she's actually flying with the jetpack, considering how fast she's going and how little protection she's wearing.

Sniper Elite 5 Developer Comments On Game's Removal From The Epic Games Store

1 year 11 months ago

Sniper Elite 5 developer Rebellion has issued a statement the sudden and mysterious removal of the game from the Epic Games Store on PC. It was originally supposed to launch on the platform alongside the other announced ones.

In a statement to VCG, Rebellion said, "Due to circumstances beyond our control Sniper Elite 5 was not available on the Epic Store at launch but will be released on that platform in the future. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Sniper Elite 5 was previously available for preorder on the Epic Games Store, but before the game's release, it was pulled from the storefront, and refunds were issued. On Rebellion's official website, the studio provided a direct link to Epic's contact page in the case some players didn't receive their refunds.

Now, Sniper Elite 5's listing on the Epic Games Store simply says, "coming soon." The game launched on May 26 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Rebellion's website also states that there are no concrete plans for a Nintendo Switch at the moment.

In our Sniper Elite 5 review, we said, "Fairburne isn't the most graceful protagonist, either, but these shortcomings aren't damaging enough to seriously dampen the glee that comes from shooting Nazis in the face from 300 yards away. When it comes to long-range combat, Sniper Elite 5 has mastered the craft."

Fanatical has launched a new PC game bundle that features some great games for a really low price. Killer Bundle 22 has two tiers: The first nets you five games for five bucks, while the second costs $7 and comes with an additional game. Considering the bundle contains multiple games that would be worth the price of admission alone--Blasphemous, Severed Steel, and My Time at Portia, to name a few--the Killer Bundle 22 offers ridiculous value.

If you like metroidvanias and Souls games, you should definitely check out Blasphemous. This side-scroller features metroidvania-style progression within a gorgeous, gory world. The combat is brutal, the bosses are grotesque monstrosities, and the tense atmosphere makes exploration a thrill. Blasphemous regularly costs $25.

Dark Souls PC Servers Remain Offline After Four Months, But From Is Working On Restoring Them

1 year 11 months ago

Four months later, the network servers for the Dark Souls games on PC remain offline, but developer From Software has reassured fans that work is ongoing to bring them back online.

In a statement to PC Gamer, a spokesperson for the studio said, "We are currently in the process of restoring the online servers for the Dark Souls series on PC."

Online service will be restored "progressively" for each game, though it's unclear in which order this will happen. From Software's statement said, "We plan to restore online service for each game progressively, bringing back servers for Dark Souls 3 once we complete the necessary work to correct the problem."

The studio added: "We will provide additional updates as soon as the restoration schedule is finalized. We want to thank all our players for your patience and understanding as we work to fix this issue."

At the start of 2022, From Software acknowledged a significant security issue with Dark Souls 3, and in the wake of this, the company brought down the PvP servers for all Dark Souls games on PC. In February, it was reported that the servers would stay offline until Elden Ring launched, but that came and went, and the servers are still dark.

Valve Says It's "Working To Improve" Team Fortress 2's Bot Problem

1 year 11 months ago

Team Fortress 2's bot problem has finally received acknowledgement from the powers-that-be. On Team Fortress 2's Twitter, developer Valve wrote, "TF2 community, we hear you… We see how large this issue has become and are working to improve things."

Valve's response follows a passionate campaign launched by TF2 players to save the game. Using the hashtag #SaveTF2, players wanted to draw attention to the state of the game and ask Valve to find a solution to the bots.

While Valve hasn't officially announced what fix is in store, this is at least a public promise to do something about players' requests.

TF2's bot problem has made the game almost unplayable--or at the very least, unpleasant--and the issue has been ongoing for awhile, notably intensifying in 2020.

Valve has tried to address the issue before. In June 2020, Valve limited "certain new accounts" from accessing the chat function, but acknowledged that more needed to be done. It stated it was still looking for ways to "mitigate the use of new and free accounts for abusive purposes."

Today's Wordle Answer (#342) - May 27, 2022

1 year 11 months ago

The final Wordle answer of the workweek is quite a doozy. If you're here because you're struggling with the May 27 puzzle, then don't worry, you're not alone. There are interesting vowel placements in addition to the word itself being fairly uncommon in everyday life.

When I began to guess different words, I was stunned to see that most of the letters I was guessing were correct. My starting word produced a few different correct letters and then my second guess managed to put two of those letters in the right spot. However, as I kept guessing, no additional letters or correct placements popped up. It wasn't until my sixth guess, when I had three of the letters, that I finally figured out the answer. If you struggled as I did, then you can look below for some much-needed hints and even the full answer.

Today's Wordle Answer - May 27, 2022

The hints we provide below will give you a general idea of what the word could be without completely giving it away. We will do that at the end of this guide.

  • Hint 1: There is a double letter in this word.
  • Hint 2: This item is something that a princess, such as Princess Peach, wears in most of their appearances in video games.
  • Hint 3: In the T.V. show "The Big Bang Theory," Amy gets overjoyed when Sheldon gifts her one of these.

If those hints weren't enough to move the needle, then fear not. The full answer to the Wordle on May 27 is... "tiara." Sony Projects Launching 12 Live Service Games By 2025

1 year 11 months ago

Jim Ryan doubled down on Sony's commitment to increasing its live service offerings in the coming years during the Game & Network Services portion of Sony's 2022 Business Segment briefings.

As you can see in the slide below, Sony wants to double the number of live-service games it operates in 2023 as compared to this year, going from three to six. By 2024, it wants that number to reach 10, increasing even further to 12 in 2025.

Keep in mind that Sony's graph refers to fiscal years; fiscal year 2025 runs from April 2024 through March 2025, so it expects to achieve its goal of 12 live-service games by that March.

This isn't completely new info. During a Q3 call in February 2022, Ryan already stated Sony's intention to launch 10 live service games by 2026. Now it appears Sony's target has shifted to a few more live service games than the number mentioned in February.

Sony's 2022 Business Segment briefing slide

Sony's always been known for its first-party single-player titles that are "prestigious" (a nebulous term in the gaming industry that differs depending on who you ask), but recent acquisitions and announcements indicate Sony's desire to diversify its business model.

Destiny 2 Exploit Provides Infinite Legendary Shards, But Don't Get Banned

1 year 11 months ago

Short on Legendary Shards in Destiny 2? A new exploit in the game can help you farm a near-limitless supply of the in-game currency, but it does carry the risk of a potential ban on your account if Bungie decides to act. If you like flirting with danger and banhammers, the process for acquiring a pile of Legendary Shards is relatively simple.

As spotted by Fanbyte and YouTube user David, these are the steps you'll need to follow:

  • Make certain that you have enough Glimmer, which can be purchased from Master Rahool in the Tower in case you're running short of the currency.
  • Open your Collections tab and go to the Armor section.
  • Depending on your class, you'll want to buy gear from one of three Armor sets, using your Glimmer.
  • Titans: Midnight Oil
  • Hunters: Gumshoe Gumption
  • Warlocks: The Inspector
  • Dismantle that gear, and you'll be refunded some Legendary Shards and a small amount of Glimmer.
  • Repeat the process as much, and as an added bonus, you'll also earn Gunsmith reputation.

Legendary Shards are used for a number of purchases in Destiny 2, as you can acquire rare materials from Master Rahool, Upgrade Modules to increase the power of your arsenal, and as cash for Xur's inventory when he arrives on Friday. You can also use Legendary Shards to buy Enhancement Prisms, Ascendant Alloy, and craft weapons. This exploit will likely be hot-fixed out of Destiny 2 soon, and if Bungie catches anyone abusing it, don't be surprised to hear that some Guardians have received a ban.

PSVR 2 Will Have More Than 20 Launch Games

1 year 11 months ago

PlayStation VR 2, Sony's new virtual reality headset for the PS5, will have over 20 first-party and third-party titles at launch. This info was revealed during Jim Ryan's Game & Network Services portion of Sony's 2022 Business Segment briefings.

PSVR 2 was announced in 2021 and is the successor of PSVR--the virtual reality headset for PS4.

Sony hasn't announced a price point for the PSVR 2, but you can expect it to be at least as high as the PSVR, which retailed for $300 upon launch. No launch date is set yet, but a report in 2021 suggested that Sony will launch the headset during 2022's holiday season.

So what can we expect from PSVR 2? The controllers will feature haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and precision tracking. The headset will have an OLED HDR display, 110-degree field of view, and 120Hz refresh rate.
