Phoenix Is the Next Valorant Agent Who Desperately Needs Attention [UPDATE]

1 year 9 months ago

Valorant’s meta is in a pretty good spot right now. Following a rebalance of its controllers, the arrival of a new initiator, and a nerf to Chamber that has been controversial but undeniably effective at reintroducing trap-heavy sentinels to the game, the meta supports a huge variety of different Agent compositions. Even Yoru is enjoying a renaissance these days!

But there’s one Agent who’s fallen so far from grace and been neglected for so long that he’s taken over the mantle as Valorant’s biggest meme: poor old Phoenix, the flash-heavy duelist with a kit of utility that isn’t just useless to his teammates but less effective than his own support Agents for fragging out.

Update 06/25/2022: Riot Games has confirmed it is trialing a number of buffs to Phoenix on Valorant’s Public Beta Environment server (PBE). These include a stronger and faster flash, reduced weapon re-equip time after using Blaze, and Run it Back ceasing to remove shields after use.

Update 07/12/2022: It appears as though the Phoenix buffs that were being trialed in the PBE server are now official and are live in Valorant as of Patch 5.01 (Credit ValorLeaks). These are as follows:

Valorant: How to Change Name

1 year 11 months ago

After creating your Riot Games account you’ll be able to login to Valorant and begin playing, but you aren’t stuck with your account name as your in-game tag. Here’s how to change name in Valorant if you’re unsure of the process.

How to Change Name in Valorant

As alluded to above, by default, your gamer tag in Valorant is whatever account name you entered when you created a Riot Games account. Sometimes, these names can be awkward because so many names have already been taken. Don’t worry, though, this is changeable.

The process is super simple and can be broken down into four easy steps:

There’s no shortage of asymmetrical games you can jump into right now if you want to hone your skills or build up anticipation for soon-to-be-released titles.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2 Trailer Reveals Wookiee Jedi Youngling, Fall 2022 Release Window

1 year 11 months ago

Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 2 Release Date

Hot off an exciting weekend of tons of news from Star Wars Celebration 2022, including the reveal of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and details about The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, a new trailer for Season 2 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch has arrived.

In it, we get new looks at the Bad Batch, of course, as well as Darth Sidious aka The Emperor and Wookiee Jedi youngling Gungi. With a look at Gungi, we now know that he survived Order 66, which sought to kill and end the entirety of the Jedi. The trailer also reveals that we can expect Season 2 of The Bad Batch to drop onto Disney+ this fall.

As you can see in the trailer above, the titular Bad Batch of heroes are still doing their thing, searching for what they want to do now that they’re free. Of course, meanwhile, Sheev Palpatine’s empire is on the rise and the crew will need to deal with that while extending their helping hands to others. It looks like they’re after new allies, too, which hopefully includes Gungi.

7 of the most cutest things in Little Witch In The Woods

1 year 11 months ago

Readers may remember my delight over the demo for Little Witch In The Woods, and I'm happy to report that game is now out in early access. It's already much more polished than the demo, with more yet to come. It's a life sim with a bit of a Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing vibe, except instead of farming you are a witch called Ellie (size: small) living in a biome (type: forest).

In the story you start to free the nearby village from cursed vines, and this requires that you catalogue and collect ingredients for spells, and thence expand your repertoire of witchy recipes. At the same time you can trade spells and magical candy with locals for currency, which you can use to improve your little machines - a roaster, a caldron, a press for ingredients - to make even better things, more efficiently. It's a satisfying process of mastery and exploration. But that is not the important bit. The important bit is that Little Witch In The Woods is disgustingly adorable.

Computex 2022 highlights: all the best PC gaming bits

1 year 11 months ago

To be honest, I found Computex 2022 kind of underwhelming; this is usually the biggest event in the PC gaming hardware calendar, and had returned to Taipei after an all-remote 2021 show, but ended with only a smattering of major announcements in the bag. We got nothing on Intel’s Arc graphics cards, and Nvidia’s keynote revealed some new DLSS games but otherwise went light on GeForce deets.

That said, this year’s show wasn’t a bust either: there was fresh AMD Ryzen 7000 info, Corsair’s first crack at a gaming laptop and, at long last, some PCIe 5.0 SSDs you can actually buy. One day. In the future. That’s in addition to the wackier, moon-shooting tech on display, without which it just wouldn’t be Computex. So, in descending order - from the interesting and sensible to the blinking ludicrous – here are the PC gaming highlights from Computex 2022.

Apico is a Cozy and Relaxed Beekeeping Game

1 year 11 months ago

The idea of leaving everything behind for a life completely opposite of the one you’re living is an appealing prospect. So much so that many life sims offer that kind of fantasy life. Apico is one such game, involving a rural life beekeeping on an island. However, as it turns out, beekeeping means not only raising and breeding bees and gathering their honey, but keeping an eye on flowers and so many open windows.

As with many games of this kind, things begin with an individual abandoning an urban lifestyle. They grew up in Port Apico, and decided to return to keep bees. Which means starting from scratch. You bring nothing back to the island. Fortunately, getting started is as easy as collecting an axe from some quests, chopping down a small part of the forest, crafting items to build a home and workshop, and getting some wild bees and hives.

The latest Star Wars novel makes a Final Fantasy 10 sport canon

1 year 11 months ago

If you're watching the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series and want yet more backstory, it sounds like you could do a lot worse than read this month's latest Star Wars novel, Brotherhood.

Brotherhood takes place during the Clone Wars, and stars both Anakin Skywalker and Kenobi off on another adventure. But it's the novel's cameos which have sparked some extra attention - seeing as they acknowlege a couple of well-known video games (thanks, GamesRadar).

For starters, Brotherhood apparently includes a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" appearance by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order star Cal Kestis, who was but a youngling at the time of the novel's events.

DF Direct Weekly: Will new consoles arrive in 2024 and is the next Xbox a streaming stick?

1 year 11 months ago

The weeks in the run-up to E3 - or what remains of it - are always something of a dry spell, which perhaps may explain some of the more outlandish nature of the topics for discussion this week. After a presentation from TV manufacturer, TCL, rumours are starting to gather pace that Pro/enhanced consoles will come from Microsoft and Sony in 2024. Meanwhile, Microsoft is planning an xCloud streaming stick - something that does actually seem to be happening - and news emerges from Sony about its long term strategy, covering PC, mobile and a 'longest ever tail' for PlayStation 4. All this and more is discussed in the new DF Direct Weekly, embedded below for your viewing pleasure.

The TCL story likely has no real basis beyond conjecture from the company - after all, a non-affiliated organisation is unlikely to have visibility into the console plans of any platform holder. There are multiple reasons why we may not see mid-gen Pro/enhanced consoles - which we'll be covering in a separate article later on this week - but first and foremost amongst them is Sony's own prediction that the semiconductor shortage won't be fully resolved until 2024. Why limit the sales of the existing model just as they're really taking off by introducing a more expensive version that Sony is likely to lose a lot of money on? And do we really need more power in a world where Nintendo Switch and Series S have been so successful?

Kratos and Master Chief Finally Face Off Thanks to God of War Mod

1 year 11 months ago

Remember those debates with your friends over who would win in a fight between God of War's Kratos and Halo's Master Chief? Well, now you can see the two video game titans duke it out thanks to a PC mod for God of War 2018.

The mod was originally created by Marcos RC, and the footage takes the first boss fight from the game, replacing The Stranger with Chief himself. You can check out a snippet of the brawl below, or watch the entire thing play out on Marcos RC's YouTube page.

Due to the nature of the original boss fight, Chief doesn't rely on any of his iconic weapons, instead opting for hand-to-hand combat. So, I guess the jury's still out on who would win if both characters were fully equipped.

Valorant: How to Forfeit

1 year 11 months ago

Valorant‘s popularity has skyrocketed since its launch back in 2020, and it’s easy to see why. The synergy of tactical gunplay and a variety of special abilities makes for a unique FPS experience that demands skill, teamwork, and clever strategy. Not every game goes according to plan, though, and if you find yourself in over your heads in a competitive, ranked game, sometimes there’s just no choice but to give up. In this guide, we’ll talk you through how to surrender and forfeit in Valorant.

What the Command to Surrender in Valorant Is

To forfeit in Valorant and surrender to the enemy, simply complete the following steps:

  1. To forfeit in Valorant, type “/ff” “forefeit,” “concede” or “surrender” in the chat. The chat can be opened by pressing Enter on your keyboard.

  2. Doing this will start a Surrender Vote on your team. You and your teammates will then have to vote either “/yes” (F5) or “/no” (F6) to confirm they do or don’t want to surrender the match. You’ll need all five players on your team to admit defeat if you want to forfeit in Valorant.

Remember, you can only /FF and surrender after the fifth round of the game. If you try and do it before this, it’ll simply roll the vote onto the next round. If you have already called a surrender that failed you will get one more opportunity after the pistol round of the next half.

Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds is a Tedious Mobile Game

1 year 11 months ago

Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds is a mobile entry that mimics the trappings and aesthetics of Studio Ghibli, much like other Level-5-developed titles. A beautiful, animated introduction immediately sets the tone and provides a brief introduction to story elements that will drive the game forward. With some metatextual commentary, Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds is candid about its identity as an MMORPG. Its players traverse a fantastical online world. The game shows incredible promise. Like NieR Re[in]carnation or Genshin Impact, it demonstrates just what this particular market is capable of. However, it is held back by aggressive monetization and monotonous mechanics.

Players can select from a handful of different classes, each with their own unique specialization. I picked the Swordsman class, which is supposed to have an equal distribution of attack and defense stats. But this feels mostly insignificant due to the “auto-play” functionality. This includes things like auto-running to objectives and auto-combat. You can turn it off, of course. But it ultimately doesn’t change too much about early gameplay. While Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds has immediately recognizable visual design, little actually sets it apart from other mobile games of its ilk. I found myself feeling the same kind of exhaustion that I had when playing Lineage II Revolution, another “MMORPG” style mobile game by Netmarble.

Final Fantasy 10’s Blitzball Is Now Canon In Star Wars

1 year 11 months ago

Final Fantasy X Blitzball Star Wars

If you’ve ever wondered if people in the world of Star Wars play sports that don't involve racing repulsorcrafts, we now know that they play at least one: Blitzball.

No, you didn’t misread that – it says Blitzball, you know, the underwater hockey-like sport played by Tidus, Wakka, and others in Final Fantasy X. That’s because in the canonized novel Star Wars: Brotherhood, which is about the relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, a reference to Blitzball being played in a local lake is made. How do we know it’s the Blitzball from Final Fantasy X? Well, the author of Brotherhood, Mike Chen, is the person who revealed this fun detail, as reported by GamesRadar

“There’s a reference to a sport called Blitzball played in a local lake. Blitzball is basically underwater hockey played as a minigame in Final Fantasy X. As a former NHL writer, I freaking loved Blitzball and spent hours winning leagues.”

The Most Immersive Part Of GTA V’s Open World Is Its Radio

1 year 11 months ago

Grand Theft Auto V Music Radio Stations

Back in March, I began playing Grand Theft Auto V for the first time ever. I somehow missed it in 2013, and as the years went by, I realized maybe I just wasn’t that interested in it. However, I couldn’t shake the idea that I had a GTA-sized gap in my gaming knowledge, especially as I write news stories seemingly every month about its massive sales numbers, which somehow keep increasing, the continuous flow of GTAV Online content, and more.

GTA V is as prevalent today as it was in 2013, so when the new-gen editions on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S were released in March, I decided to finally give it a go. And, unsurprisingly to most reading this probably, it lived up to the hype. So much so that I’m still playing it today, more than two months later. I love playing through the game’s main campaign and the Strangers and Freaks missions, but I’ve found that my absolute favorite thing to do is just drive around while listening to music.

An Interview With MultiVersus Director Tony Huynh

1 year 11 months ago

During the recent closed alpha test, we sat down to talk about all things MultiVersus with the game's director, Tony Huynh, from Player First Games. In this interview, we talk with Tony about what MultiVerus is, how it is to work with Warner Bros on the project, philosophies on its core combat designs and business models, and much more.

Game Informer: Can you tell us about MultiVersus? What’s the quick pitch of it?

Tony Huynh: MultiVersus is a cooperative platform fighter. It's free to play. And it's a game that has a lot of the barriers removed, that's really easy to pick up, but also a really smooth, gradual mastery curve into the game. Its focus is on cooperative team-based gameplay. So from the ground up, everything about it is team-based, working with your ally, all the abilities and moves are based around team play as well as having a huge iconic character cast of really awesome characters. We spent a lot of time on making the characters play the way that you think that they would play. We try to support every single input device, like keyboards and controllers. In an effort to remove all barriers, we also have a lot of resources poured into making really good online play through dedicated server rollback netcode. In a nutshell, that is what MultiVersus is; it's a very cooperative focused, social-focused platform fighter that I think everybody can pick up and play and then also invest thousands of hours, like I have, into it. [laughs]

I Wish Kingdom Hearts’ Sora Was More Like Yakuza’s Ichiban Kasuga

1 year 11 months ago

Working for a video game website, I engage in many playful, though sometimes heated, debates about games with my co-workers. We recently discussed the best Kingdom Hearts characters, and, surprisingly, several of us excluded Sora from the cream of the crop. However, a defender propped up Sora’s one defining good trait: his overwhelming positivity. In response, I jokingly said if optimism is all Sora offers, he should be replaced by a superior beacon of positivity: Ichiban Kasuga, star of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. We had a good laugh and moved on, but the idea lingered in my brain. I need this to happen.

I’ll preface my next statement with this disclosure: I like Kingdom Hearts. Now that blowback immunity is activated, I think Sora is lame. He’s a good kid with a great heart, and he’s fun to use in Super Smash Bros. However, Kingdom Hearts III made me finally accept that I haven’t really been into Sora as a personality since (maybe) Kingdom Hearts II. Much of that probably has to do with his dialogue; it’s unbearably cringe-worthy at times. Not to mention he’s also got a bad case of Ash Ketchum syndrome; the dude is umpteen games deep, and he still isn’t an officially recognized keyblade master? More than anything else, though, I find Sora bland.

Apex Legends Is Still The Best Battle Royale, And It's Not Even Close

1 year 11 months ago

Apex Legends Best Battle Royale

My first battle royale skydive was in the early access version of PUBG. I landed on the outskirts of Lipovka and, with the devastating SCAR-L, made quick work of enemies. There were brief moments of gratification, but securing that delicious Chicken Dinner tested my patience for dozens of hours and proved too frustrating. Fortnite’s cartoonish aesthetic and enticing crossovers scratched my casual FPS itch, but the base-building mechanic constantly shattered combat momentum. Warzone’s sensory overload was downright overwhelming. With arena sizes that seemingly rivaled open-world games, a high combatant count, and annoying purchasable killstreaks, Call of Duty’s battle royale reminded me that less is more.

And then there’s Apex Legends, the great equalizer – where skill, tactics, and dumb luck (RNG) coalesced into intense, energetic bouts. Even three years after its surprise launch, Apex Legends continues to be the best battle royale out there.

Tracing Threads: The Making Of Tunic

1 year 11 months ago

making of Tunic Andrew Shouldice interview Tunic indie game pass Finji

Tunic started with a difficult choice for lead developer Andrew Shouldice: stay at his stable job or take the plunge and quit to work full-time on his budding game idea. In 2015, Shouldice closed his eyes and jumped. However, when asked why he made that decision, he initially hesitates.

“Why indeed?” Shouldice answers after a beat with a chuckle and a dramatic tone that suggests Tunic’s development cycle was a long one. There is no single incident he can point to that spurred him into making his choice. Instead, several factors, including how much he enjoyed making past one-off projects and his dwindling excitement for his job, influenced his decision to strike out on his own. His departure wasn’t without uncertainty.

“I remember thinking to myself; this might be a bad decision,” Shouldice says. “But I would rather make the bad decision now than always wonder what could have been, you know? Which is very cheesy, I understand. But that was sort of the thing that ended up pushing me over the edge. I really want to do this. Maybe it’s a bad idea, but I have to know.”

Seven years after its inception and four since its grand debut on the E3 stage, Tunic has finally launched. The vibrant isometric action game puts you in the boots of a sword-wielding fox fighting through a world of winding paths, mysterious structures, merciless enemies, and hidden secrets. Its art style, combat, and setting earned Tunic an ever-growing crowd of fans over the years. But while it’s currently one of the highest-rated releases of the year, Tunic started as a small solo project.

War of the Visions’ Dark Meta Finally Takes Shape With the Arrival of New 100-Cost Unit Great Detective Leela

1 year 11 months ago

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius has been utterly dominated by the Light-based evasion meta for the past few months, but we’re starting to see a shift in the PvP scene. Things started shaking up when the GLEX unit Esther bolstered the Lightning element, and with the release of Astrius as well, who gave the Water element the hard carry DPS unit it sorely needed.

With this week’s update, however, it’s starting to seem like Dark is about to take over the PvP scene. With the Persona 5 Royal collaboration, we saw the release of Joker, who’s proven to be a pretty formidable Dark gunner. And this week will see the release of Great Detective Leela, who’s going to be a 100-Cost Dark unit who’s both tanky and hard-hitting.

Here’s a rundown of her skills:

  • Shadow in the Moonlight (Limit Burst): Raises own DEF Piercing Rate, then deals Damage (L) to targets within range and chance of inflicting Blind for 3 turns and additional effect: lowers Slash Attack Res while Blind is in effect.
  • Graceful Undoing: Deals Damage (M) to targets within range and removes all buffs.
  • Little Leela’s Tactical Tips: Raises Reaction Block Rate of allies within area around self for 3 turns and recovers a set percentage of own HP (L) when HP falls below 20% when taking damage (1 time).

We’ll also see the Early Summer Part II login campaign on Wednesday, where players will be able to get various bonuses, including unit shards for Leela herself.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is now available on mobile devices.

The list of possible answers is pretty long, but you should be able to narrow down that list if you’ve already attempted a couple of guesses. By using the color-coded clues, you’ll be able to determine if a letter is in the wrong place, or if it isn’t present in the word entirely. You’ll then be able to start a process of elimination by going down the list and ruling out words with letters that you’ve already guessed wrongly, and come to a conclusion from there.

If you’re still having trouble, however, or if you’re already down to your last attempt, here’s today’s Wordle solution to help keep you afloat.
