Apex Legends Director Chad Grenier Is Departing Respawn

2 years 5 months ago

Apex Legends director Chad Grenier is departing Respawn, the studio he helped form in 2010. He will be replaced by Steve Ferreira, who joined the Apex Legends team as a lead in 2019.

"It's an emotional day for me. After years of making great games with some of the best in the biz, I'm saying goodbye to a studio that I love and helped form 11 years ago," Grenier wrote.

In Grenier's note, he thanked Respawn founder Vince Zampella and the rest of the team, saying that he feels like a "kid leaving the nest."

Grenier has been Apex Legends' director since mid-2019, and was among the developers who departed Infinity Ward alongside Zampella when he and Jason West were fired in 2010. Grenier did not reveal his intentions for the future.

Grenier's departure comes amid shakeups elsewhere in EA. Yesterday, EA announced DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson's planned departure, with Zampella adding DICE to his portfolio as Group GM.

Iron Banter: This Week In Destiny 2 - Crucible Tips For Jumping Into Halo Infinite

2 years 5 months ago

The launch of Halo Infinite's multiplayer beta recently has been a big reminder for some of us ancient, lapsed Halo fans of just how great that franchise's competitive gameplay can be. The remarkable thing about Halo Infinite is how much a lot of it feels like an improved return to the original Halo. Of course, the original Halo was a Bungie joint, and after completing a big batch of Halo games, Bungie went on to work on Destiny. The Halo baton was passed to 343 Industries, but this latest entry in the franchise feels more akin to Bungie's early work than the last few games in the series.

Since Halo Infinite and its free-to-play multiplayer mode are pretty popular right now, and since we're still a few days out from the big content drop that is the 30th Anniversary celebration for Destiny 2, you might be thinking about jumping from the Crucible to Halo for a bit. That's certainly what I've been doing. The good news is that if you're looking to try out Halo after spending your time in the Crucible, you're going to find the two games are very similar, given the DNA they share. There are absolutely some aspects of Halo that will feel out of step for Destiny players, but for the most part, the games have a lot in common.

Best Call Of Duty: Vanguard Weapons To Level For Warzone

2 years 5 months ago

Call of Duty: Warzone's new Caldera map arrives on December 8 with Season 1's Vanguard integration, and while it's too early to know the meta, there are a few guns that could be powerful contenders. Here we list Vanguard guns and attachments that could dominate in Warzone's new Pacific setting.

Vanguard's STG-44 assault rifle and M1 Garand tactical rifle are already available to use in Warzone for those who unlocked them in Black Ops Cold War's final battle pass, but they don't really stack up against other weapons in Verdansk. It's possible this will change with the launch of Caldera, but here we focus on other weapons with higher fire rate that could help you achieve a victory royale.

Halo Infinite Is Adding More Playlists Soon, But Slayer Isn't Ready Yet

2 years 5 months ago

343 Industries hears the feedback about Halo Infinite players wanting more multiplayer playlists, and they are coming. Community manager John Junyszek said on Twitter that multiple standalone playlists are coming to Halo Infinite, and they could arrive before the end of the year.

These playlists--which will include Fiesta, Tactical Slayer (SWAT), and Free-For-All--won't be in the game on December 8 when the campaign launches, however. The Fiesta mode was featured in the Fracture: Tenrai event. Junyszek said the goal for events is to test new modes before they get their own playlists. "We'll monitor playlist health after the three additions above and adjust our offering if needed, but we're excited to make these updates before the holidays," Junyszek said.

New World Players Are Up In Arms About The Game's Newly Proposed Expertise System

2 years 5 months ago

Proposed changes to how players earn gear, and how effective it is, in Amazon's MMORPG New World has its players up in arms.

As revealed in the game's latest public test realm build and detailed in an official blog post from Amazon, New World's upcoming December patch will bring some major changes to the game, including changes to endgame content and the game's current High Watermark system. Watermark will become a new system called Expertise, and while it will largely function the same as it once did, with players having to earn progressively better items with higher gear score through participating in endgame activities, there is one major change that is causing a whole lot of controversy.

As it currently stands, the High Watermark system only affects item drops, and has no effect on the actual effectiveness of that item. That means that players with a low Watermark on a particular gear slot could still equip and use higher gear score items--such as crafted items--at maximum effectiveness, as long as they met the level requirements.

That won't be the case following the release of the upcoming December update. Players using gear of a higher gear score than their Expertise level will see those items essentially downgraded to match their Expertise level, meaning players that crafted high-level armor, earned a high-gear score item from a quest, or bought max-level gear from another player will still need to participate in the endgame grind in order to get maximum use out of their gear.

Xbox Series X, PS5 Stock Might Be Available At Walmart Gamer Drop Sale

2 years 5 months ago

Walmart is hosting a massive gaming-centric sale in just over a week's time, giving you another chance to grab some consoles, games, and accessories for less if you missed out on Black Friday.

The catch here, however, is that Walmart's Gamer Drop is set to be an in-store event only, meaning you won't be able to fill your cart and check out remotely. The benefit here is that the sale's brochure seems to hint at the availability of both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles, which would certainly make the trip well worth it.

Outside of the scarce consoles, you can expect to pick up a bunch of different controllers for each one, including Walmart's exclusive Red Camo Xbox Series X|S controller. The retailer will also have all three versions of the PS5 DualSense, including the new Midnight Black and Cosmic Red variations.

Some games will be sold at a discounted $25, too. These include FIFA 22, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, F1 2021, and more. Gaming accessories, such as Logitech's G915 TKL keyboard and Razer's Orochi V2 wireless mouse, will also be on sale.

Walmart's Gamer Drop starts on December 11, 2021 at store locations nationwide.

Call Of Duty: Vanguard Is Hosting Another Double XP Weekend

2 years 5 months ago

Call of Duty: Vanguard is hosting a double XP weekend this week, giving you another chance to double your gains towards weapon and battle pass progression over the next few days.

Developer Sledgehammer Games announced the boost on Twitter, giving players around 72 hours to make big gains towards new weapons and unlocks and cosmetics through the battle pass. This is just one in many similar double XP weekends Vanguard has received since launch in early November, with Sledgehammer trying to incentivize players to stick with the shooter amid the launches of Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite.

Reports have suggested that Call of Duty: Vanguard might be the worst selling entry in the series in 14 years in the UK this far out from release, perhaps indicating a fatigue over World War II-themed shooters. Next year's Call of Duty entry is reportedly a sequel to the Modern Warfare reboot once again developed by Infinity Ward.

Activision is still also very busy dealing with the fallout over another report on workplace misconduct and sexual harassment, this time falling square on CEO Bobby Kotick. The leader of the publisher has reportedly stated that he will consider stepping down if issues cannot be resolved quickly, while numerous employees have asked for his immediate resignation.

Peyton Manning Wants To Make Tom Brady Worse In Madden 22

2 years 5 months ago

Peyton Manning, one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history--as well as one of the best audible-callers in NFL history--will forever be remembered for his terrific passing, dissecting defenses, and leading two teams to Super Bowl victories. However, it turns out that Manning just wanted to be a Madden Ratings Adjuster, and he's ready to take down his rival, Tom Brady, if EA lets him.

Speaking in a new video posted on Twitter, Manning confessed that it wasn't the fame, fortune, or record that drove his performance in 18 NFL seasons. It wasn't even trying to beat his brother and father for family supremacy. What it was really about was getting to decide who gets their ratings altered.

"I did especially think that Brady's accuracy rating was just a bit high," Manning said. The two quarterbacks are almost unanimously considered the best to ever play the game, with Brady still playing despite being 44 years old. Both quarterbacks also showed how they could breathe life into struggling franchises--Brady took the Buccaneers from 7-9 in 2019 to a Super Bowl the following year, and the Broncos went from 8-8 in 2011 to two Super Bowl appearances and one win under Manning.

New World PTR Is Currently Testing Endgame Changes And A New Seasonal Event

2 years 5 months ago

Endgame changes are being tested on New World's public test realm, as developer Amazon Game Studios looks to build "a compelling and diverse endgame" that has largely been missing since the game's launch.

As it currently stands, New World's endgame isn't terribly exciting. Upon hitting max level, players mostly just run around in large groups and clear out endgame elite zones for a chance of obtaining a better piece of gear that will raise what Amazon calls a "High Watermark" for that particular item slot, thus increasing their chances of getting even better gear to drop in the future. Players do this all the way until their Watermark for each piece of gear is level 600, the current max.

Amazon is looking to change that, first by changing the name of the High Watermark system altogether. As detailed in a new blog post, the system will now be referred to as Expertise, and whereas the actual numbers associated with the High Watermark system were invisible to players, Expertise will actually display on each item slot in a player's inventory so players can more easily track their progress.

Amazon is also looking to reward players for engaging in more max-level activities outside of farming elite zones. A new resource, called Gypsum, is being introduced, one that is rewarded from doing a variety of high-level activities such as Outpost Rush, expeditions, corrupted breaches, and more. Different types of Gypsum can be crafted into Gypsum Orbs, which are then in turn used to craft weapons, armor, and trinkets. Doing so will guarantee an increase in Expertise for that particular item slot.

Aloy From Horizon Is Coming To Fall Guys Next Week

2 years 5 months ago

The latest crossover character for the whimsical battle royale game Fall Guys has been revealed, and it's none other than Aloy from Sony's Horizon series. The special Aloy outfit will arrive in Fall Guys on December 6 as part of a special event called Aloy's Blaze Canister Mayhem, apparently.

"Get ready to avoid mechanical menaces, collect blaze canisters, and win unique rewards in Aloy's Blaze Canister Mayhem!" reads a line from the official announcement. No further details are available, but with the release being right around the corner, we should know more soon.

This is not the first time a Sony franchise is showing up in Fall Guys, as the battle royale game previously welcome special skins from the Ratchet & Clank, Little Big Planet, and Ghost of Tsushima most recently. Other franchises that crossed over with Fall Guys have included Doom, Half-Life, Portal, Sonic, Among Us, and Super Monkey Ball.

All The Presenters And Performers At The Game Awards 2021

2 years 5 months ago

The Game Awards 2021 are happening on December 9, bringing the industry together for a night of celebration as well as plenty of game news and announcements. Host and producer Geoff Keighley is at the center of the show, but there will be plenty of special guest presenters, as well as musical performances from top artists. Keighley has been sharing news on the presenters in the days leading up to The Game Awards, and we've rounded them up here.

The Game Awards Confirmed Presenters

  • Simu Liu (Shang-Chi)
  • Reggie Fils-Aime (former Nintendo of America president)
  • Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix)
  • Laura Bailey (Call of Duty: Vanguard)
  • Giancarlo Esposito (Far Cry 6)
  • Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us)
  • Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian)
  • Jecksepticeye (YouTube creator)

The Game Awards Confirmed Musical Performers

  • Sting (performing "What Could Have Been" from the show Arcane)
  • Imagine Dragons (and special surprise guests)

The Game Awards has seen Hollywood actors present awards before, including Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez in 2019, but Keanu Reeves particularly is something of a folk hero now. His E3 "you're breathtaking" ad-lib quickly became a meme, and with Sting's famous "Every Breath You Take" song with The Police, the stars seemed to have aligned.

As you can see in the list above, the number of confirmed presenters is fairly low right now. Expect it to get much larger as we get close to December 9. If it doesn't include Hideo Kojima, we would be absolutely shocked.

PlayStation Planning A Game Pass Competitor Subscription Service Called Spartacus - Report

2 years 5 months ago

PlayStation is reportedly planning a new subscription service to compete with Xbox Game Pass, with the ability to play original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Portable games.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, this service is codenamed Spartacus. Owners will be able to pay a monthly fee to play classic and modern games from PlayStation's catalog. The service will most likely be available on PlayStation 4 as well as PlayStation 5.

Spartacus is reportedly expected to launch in Spring 2022 and will merge both existing subscription plans of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now together. However, the PlayStation Now name is going to be phased out while PlayStation Plus remains.

Details aren't finalized, but the service will reportedly have three tiers. The first tier will retain existing PlayStation Plus benefits and the second tier will allow players to access a large selection of PS4 titles, with PS5 ones eventually. The third and highest tier will include extended demos, game streaming, and a library of legacy content from PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games. Vita games are conspicuously absent from the reported lineup, although it's possible that's due to the difficulty of mapping touch controls to a PS4 or PS5 controller.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Glitch Is Turning Villagers Into Nudists

2 years 5 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is pure wholesome fun, but a glitch that sneaked in through the game's latest DLC has introduced more risque content to the island: full-frontal nudity.

The good news is that you won't have to worry about your parents walking into the room and finding questionable content on your Switch, as each Animal Crossing character is smoother than a Ken doll. Safe for work nudity aside, the bug does strip--not like that, you degenerates--the game of some of its charm, as spending time and effort on assembling a wardrobe of designer clothing for your island's inhabitants is part of Animal Crossing's appeal.

So far the bug has transformed parts of Animal Crossing into a nudist colony, which players have shared images of on social media.

Grid Legends Release Date Is February 25

2 years 5 months ago

February 2022 is already a jam-packed month for new game releases, and now it's even busier, as EA and Codemasters have announced that Grid Legends will be released on February 25, 2022.

The big new addition to the next Grid game is a story mode called "Driven to Glory." The story plays out through an in-universe documentary about your rookie season. "It's a whole new level of pressure and scrutiny, and with our groundbreaking extended reality tech," EA said.

Ncuti Gatwa, who stars on Netflix's Sex Education, leads the celebrity cast for the story mode. The story mode uses real actor video and not motion capture, and the story bounces between "movie sequences" and gameplay. After the story wraps up, players can continue to advance through the career progression.

Grid Legends will have more than 100 cars at launch and a number of famous real-world tracks from around the world. The game also supports cross-platform multiplayer. Codemasters says the muultiplayer is improved in Grid Legends so that players can sync up with friends and get into races with only three button presses.

Niantic Teases Kalos Region Legendaries For Pokemon Go December Events

2 years 5 months ago

Pokemon Go is gearing up for the festive season, with developer Niantic releasing a new trailer to set the mood and tease new legendaries over the next couple of weeks.

The trailer shows multiple Pokemon Company busses making their way through some of the most recognizable cities in the world, hinting at increased rewards for players at all Poke Stops in-game. Niantic hints at an increased number of Poke Ball rewards from each Poke Stop spin, which it says will come in handy when trying to catch more pocket monsters during the holiday time.

The stinger at the end suggests that the trio of legendary Pokemon from the series' sixth generation, Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde, are set to be introduced to the game soon. The three Pokemon sit behind the currently available Kalos region species in the trailer, which can currently be caught and hatched from eggs. It could be that Niantic is planning specific raid weeks for each of the Aura trio throughout December, although concrete plans haven't been announced yet.

Recently Niantic updated Pokemon Go on iOS to finally allow players to unlock the game's frame rate. It has previously been restricted to 30fps across all iPhones, with the update allowing most devices to push up to 60fps and the recent iPhone 13 Pro to reach all the way up to 120fps.

How Eidos-Montréal's accessibility department works to make games for everyone

2 years 5 months ago

When Shadow of the Tomb Raider released in 2018, it was at the forefront of many aspects of accessibility, showcasing how to do subtitles right and offering an in-depth variety of gameplay options. The studio's latest release, this year's Guardians of the Galaxy, once again offers a lot of options specific to the game, and so I took the opportunity to talk to Améliane F. Chiasson, Eidos-Montréal's accessibility lead. (She works with a colleague, Rodrigo Sanchez.)

In the gaming industry, accessibility lead, or chief accessibility officer, is still a fairly new job title. Accessibility officers work in different ways to make a company's products, and ultimately the company itself, more accessible. Chiasson's appointment, she tells me, is fairly recent, as the department has only existed since 2020. For Eidos-Montréal, it was a way to formalise a job Chiasson had been doing for years, when she was still working in QA and user research.

Wizards Of The Coast Introduces Alchemy, A New Digital Exclusive Magic: The Gathering Format

2 years 5 months ago

After playing around with cards and mechanics exclusive to Magic: The Gathering Arena, Wizards of the Coast is expanding into supporting a new digital-only format called Alchemy. This new format and everything that comes with it will launch on December 9.

Alchemy is built on the Standard format and its yearly rotation of sets. That means when the time comes for a year's worth of cards to drop out of Standard, they will lose legality in Alchemy as well. However, a pool of new, Arena exclusive cards will be added a few weeks after each Standard-legal set launches, meaning we'll see new batches of digital cards every few months. Players will find these via Alchemy booster packs or by cashing in wildcards like any other card in Arena. Our first Alchemy infusion will play off of the most recent pair of Innistrad sets and is called Alchemy: Innistrad, bringing 63 cards into the client. Most if not all of the cards will feature rules and mechanics that are more at home in a virtual card duel than at the kitchen table.

Halo Infinite: 343 Industries Is Working To Add Fiesta, SWAT, And Free-For-All Playlists Before End Of Year

2 years 5 months ago

343 Industries is preparing for the launch of the Halo Infinite campaign next week, but it’s also kept multiplayer feedback and improvements as one of its top priorities

The team recently updated its multiplayer progression system to give players increased XP for the first six matches of any given day in response to calls from the community for battle pass progression to be sped up. Another popular ask from the community involves playlists, or specifically, the lack of dedicated free-for-all and SWAT playlists, amongst others such as a Slayer playlist.

Halo community manager John Junyszek released an update on Twitter today in regards to playlists, and he said some highly-requested ones are on the way.

Halo Infinite community manager John Junyszek took to Twitter today to reveal upcoming additions to Halo Infinite’s multiplayer playlist. Specifically, popular game mode playlists such as Fiesta, Tactical Slayer (aka SWAT), and Free-For-All are all on the way to the game’s free multiplayer game mode.

While there is no official release date for the new playlists, it is confirmed that they won’t be in the game when the campaign launches on Dec. 8, but the team, according to Junyszek, is working to have them in before year’s end.

The move to add these playlists in are in response to fan feedback that the developers are apparently reading.

Halo Infinite to Add Three More PvP Modes Before the End of the Year

2 years 5 months ago

343 Industries is planning to release more playlists and PvP modes for Halo Infinite by the end of this year. These modes include Fiesta, Tactical Slayer (SWAT), and Free-For-All. However, they won't arrive in time for Halo Infinite's official campaign launch date of December 8.

343 community director John Junyszek announced the developer's plans on Twitter. He also mentions that a Social Slayer playlist with multiple variations of the mode is being worked on as it was the most requested game type.

"Our goal for Events is to try new modes prior to adding to playlists," explains Junyszek. "We'll monitor playlist health after the 3 additions above and adjust our offering if needed, but we're excited to make these updates before the holidays."

So far, Halo Infinite's multiplayer has received mostly positive attention, while there were early criticisms over its Battle Pass and progression system. Players have called the Battle Pass progression far too slow and additionally, XP progression is gated via completing challenges, with no extra incentives to do particularly well in a match.

However, 343 has introduced some changes since the multiplayer launched, such as providing players with more XP for their first 6 matches of the day.

Though there are no confirmations, this experience will probably tie into the upcoming film The Matrix Resurrections which is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on December 22.

Unreal Engine 5 is Epic Games’ newest game engine with advancements in lighting and texture technology. Epic has been showing off its new engine with a series of tech demos, and while these demos will not become full games, its main character has become prominent enough to join the Fortnite roster.

Fights in Tight Spaces Review

2 years 5 months ago

If you both play action games and have seen the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service, it's a scientific fact that you’ve fantasized about playing a game where you systematically dispatch gaggles of enemies in stylish fashion. Then again, the game in your head probably didn’t look like Fights in Tight Spaces. Yet despite its deck-building and turn-based mechanics, you may have a hard time finding a better game that captures the moment-to-moment threat assessment and problem-solving aspects that make the best cinematic fight scenes so thrilling.

As Agent 11, top dirt-doer for a high stakes espionage firm, you're tasked with infiltrating and eliminating international gangs by any means necessary. You’ll do this by moving from one end of a big map themed like one of six criminal organizations to the other, stopping at points along the way that represent different kinds of encounters. That could be things like an underwhelming narrative scenario that ends in making banal decisions with a slight chance of reward, a scarce but always welcome medical pit stop, or (most frequently) a small diorama of a room where the beatings happen.

2 years 5 months ago

Aiko's Choice is a punchy, compact standalone expansion for 2016's exceptional tactical stealth adventure Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, and that's all I really needed it to be. Across three beefy, brilliant new levels and three smaller interludes, this side story returns us to Japan's Edo period to sneak, slash, and stalk our way through expertly crafted outposts and fortresses. And these missions pick up where the already difficult original game left off in ramping up the challenge, so expect a good fight.

All five of Blades of the Shogun's memorable party members are back, using their unique ability sets in tandem to chip away at devilishly clever clusters of diverse enemies. The basic routine hasn't really changed from the original game, which I loved, and if you’re new to it you should check out my review from 2016 to see exactly why it works so well. But Aiko's Choice also feels more precise and less frustrating, thanks in part to a timer that reminds you if you've gone too long without saving. I also didn't run into any of those impenetrable, confounding situations like in the original campaign where it felt like I had to do something really cheesy or fiddly to progress. These scenarios are tough, but the solutions are never ridiculous.
