DF Direct Weekly talks GTA Definitive patches and CES hardware leaks

2 years 5 months ago

In the face of a content pile-up next week, DF Direct Weekly goes public a day early - with myself and Alex Battaglia joined by none other than hardware and deals guy Will Judd to discuss the latest gaming and tech news. And that starts with our thoughts and plans for upcoming coverage of Halo Infinite. A game that started development before Xbox One X and launches a year after the arrival of Xbox Series X is an important topic and in our show this week, we discuss how we're going to break this one down, with various content including a full tech review, a deep dive into the PC focus and of course, console cross-platform comparisons. Going into this one, the fascination has always been about how a game designed to showcase Xbox Series hardware will look on Xbox One and whether the ambitious open world is even possible. Can 343 match the scalability shown in Forza Horizon 5? We look forward to sharing our results.

It was also great to get DF's fifth Beatle - Will Judd - onto the show this week! November represents the height of the holiday season buying frenzy and our philosophy hasn't just been to whack up any and every deal that emerges, but rather to curate the best of the best, the stuff that we'd consider buying ourselves. Will fills us in on this gigantic endeavour and the team share their BF purchases, which basically amounts to nothing from Alex, colossal hard drives for data archival for me and a high-end coffee machine for Will!

Final Fantasy XIV Players Will Get 7 Free Days Due to Endwalker’s Server Congestion Issues

2 years 5 months ago

Final Fantasy XIV is extremely popular and the latest expansion Endwalker (currently in early access) is attracting a ton of active and returning players.

While that’s a pretty nice problem to have for Square Enix, it is creating issues with the servers, which are extremely congested, causing players to meet login queues in the thousands and affecting the login servers with stability issues (the now infamous Error 2002).

As an apology, Square Enix announced that players with an active subscription (including those on their first 30 days after purchasing the game) will receive seven free days that will be added to their subscription total.

We also hear that additional free days may be granted depending on how the congestion situation progresses, considering that Endwalker has not actually been officially released yet.

Square Enix also shared an estimate of the hours that tend to have the longest queues:

  • North American Data Center: 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (PST) / 20:00 to 6:00 (GMT)
  • European Data Center: 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (PST) / 11:00 to 23:00 (GMT)
  • Japan Data Center: 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. (PST) / 9:00 to 15:00 (GMT)

Final Fantasy XIV is currently available for PlayStation 4, PS5, and PC. The upgrade to PS5 is offered free of charge to those who own the PS4 version. Endwalker will release officially on December 7.

Dungeon & Fighter Fighting Game DNF Duel by Arc System Works Reveals Ranger in New Trailer

2 years 5 months ago

Today Nexon released another brand trailer of the upcoming fighting game DNF Duel, inspired by the Dungeon Fighter franchise (also known as Dungeon & Fighter in Korea).

The trailer focuses on one of the available characters, the Ranger, showing his gunslinging moves in battle against the Inquisitor

As usual, it feels very familiar if you compare visuals and gameplay to Arc System Works’ games. This shouldn’t surprise considering that Nexon hired the popular Japanese fighting game developer to create the game. The previous trailer featuring the Berserker the one showing the Inquisitorthe one showcasing the Grappler, and the trailer focusing on the Striker give the same feeling.

Fortnite Victory Crowns Explained: Why Some Players' Names Are In Gold

2 years 5 months ago

Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1 has arrived, and with it come new Victory Crowns. This new cosmetic item is earned in-game by performing specific feats, and they won't come easily. If you wondering what a Victory Crown does or how to earn one yourself, here's all you need to know, so you can figure out why some players' names are in gold in your lobby.

Fortnite Victory Crowns

The rare and new cosmetic known as a Victory Crown has a slightly misleading name. You won't always need to earn a victory in order to get a Victory Crown, but you will need to come pretty close. Victory Crowns are given to players who finish at or near the top of a match. Win a crown for yourself and you'll start your next game with a Victory Crown worn on your head.

With prestige comes added danger, however. You'll be more noticeable to other players while wearing a Victory Crown. Perform typical feats, such as netting elims or getting assists, and earn extra XP while wearing the crown. If you manage to win a game with the crown on, you'll unlock an exclusive emote that features a tally of your exact number of victories that season.

Fortnite Queue: Here's Why Epic's Biggest Launch Ever Put Players In A Waiting Room

2 years 5 months ago

If you're trying to jump into Fortnite Chapter 3 today, you've maybe been stuck on the main menu for a few minutes at some point. While MMO fans are familiar with a virtual line to get into their games, many Fortnite players have never seen this before and are thus wondering, "why is there a Fortnite queue?" Here's why.

The Fortnite Chapter 3 launch is nothing short of record-setting. While Epic isn't sharing numbers, the team revealed on social media that the Chapter 3, Season 1 launch is the biggest season debut the game has ever experienced, and while it's impressive to see Fortnite is still growing four years after its massive launch, it comes with the slight caveat that a queue system has been implemented today.

When the season kicked off at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET on December 5, there were a few hiccups. Some players got stuck on loading screens or were repeatedly kicked off of the servers, surely due to the massive strain of millions of players logging in simultaneously. That issue only lasted about 40 minutes though, at which point Fortnite players started to see a queue, sometimes of more than 10 minutes in total wait time.

How To Use Tents In Fortnite: Campsites Explained

2 years 5 months ago

In Fortnite Chapter 3, tents are one of the biggest new additions to the battle royale game. Deploying a tent in the middle of the game opens up several options, ranging from executing a stealth attack, busting out big firepower, or investing in yourself for future rounds. Here's all you need to know about tents and the upcoming campsite upgrades.

Fortnite tents and campsites

A Fortnite tent is a new inventory item that you can find as floor loot and in chests across the new Fortnite Chapter 3 map named Artemis. When you come upon it, it will look like a bedroll, though once deployed, it springs into a full-size tent for one, and its feature set makes it a very valuable item to have on hand.

The key feature to a Fortnite tent is the ability to stash inventory items inside of it, such as weapons and health items, and retrieve them in later rounds. It is, in essence, an inventory size upgrade, but rather than just give you a few extra item slots in any given round, it also remembers what you've stashed in between rounds.

How To Slide In Fortnite

2 years 5 months ago

In Fortnite Chapter 3, you can now slide like Kevin McCallister on the ice rink after he pockets the stolen toothbrush. Sliding while shooting brings a whole new dynamic to the game's gunfights and traversal mechanics, but it's maybe not immediately clear how to slide in Fortnite. We'll walk you through it here, so you can slide into danger soon after.

How to slide in Fortnite

Sliding is a new mechanic and very easy to pull off. When sprinting with your character, you can hold the crouch button--by default that's the right stick on controller and the Ctrl key on a keyboard--to initiate a slide. But bear in mind that the hold is only needed to begin the slide. Once you're sliding, you can let go of the crouch button and forward momentum will carry you through the end of the slide.

Fortnite is a fantastic voyage.

If you don't hold it at first, you'll merely crouch like the old days, so make sure to really hold the button. It only takes a moment, but the game is good at distinguishing when you intended to hold it versus just pressing it. If you don't like the slide button being there, you can remap it in the controller configuration menu. Fortnite includes complete re-map capabilities, so take your pick.

How To Open Vaults In Fortnite Chapter 3: All Vault Locations

2 years 5 months ago

In Fortnite Chapter 3, vaults are back, and like in past seasons, you can open them to find large caches of weapons and loot. However, you can't do it alone. You'll need to work with your team to open a vault and enjoy the rewards locked inside. Here's how to open vaults in Fortnite, as well as all seven vault locations at the launch of Chapter 3, Season 1.

How to open vaults in Fortnite

There are seven vaults in Fortnite, and they're appropriately named Seven Vaults, seemingly because they belong to The Seven. To get into a vault, you'll need to play in a game mode other than solo queues, as all vaults take at least two players to open.

Gather your squad to open a vault.

When you come upon a vault, nothing you can do will open it other than getting your whole team to stay close to it. That means whether you're in duos, trios, or squads, you'll need at least one player to cooperate. Once you convene, the vault will unlock and slowly open. It's a bit loud, and all vaults are located in Seven Outposts and guarded by non-hostile NPCs--apparent guardians who work for The Seven. Don't fire on these guardians, as they won't bother you even if you open the vault.

What's In The Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 Battle Pass

2 years 5 months ago

Fortnite Chapter 3 has arrived, which means the Season 1 battle pass is here to bestow upon dedicated players 100+ new cosmetic items, including eight new characters, lots of alternate styles, new gliders, pickaxes, and more. While the major new additions are definitely Spider-Man and The Foundation, there are lots of fun new items to earn this season. Let's break down everything in the Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1 battle pass.

As mentioned, the star of the show is Spider-Man, and Epic knows it. The developer has put the webslinger at the center of its new promotional art, and with three different Spider-Man suits to unlock this season, it makes sense. Comic fans are going to love the options of the traditional Spidey, as well as symbiote and Future Foundation alternates. This season even includes the Spider-Man pointing meme as an emote, so when you find other webheads out in the world, you can stand in awe at your doppelganger.

The Foundation is also going to be a big deal because we now know for sure that he's played by The Rock, both in likeness and voice. The Foundation is this season's "secret skin," which these days is less of a secret and more of a waiting game. He won't be unlockable in Fortnite until around February 6 according to in-game menus. At that time, he and his full range of cosmetics will likely come with their own challenges you'll need to complete in order to unlock them all.

In the meantime, six other characters are introducing themselves for the first time in Fortnite, including a walking gumball, a mysterious mask-maker, and several warriors inspired by world history. Here are all eight battle pass characters by name:

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 - Week 1 Seasonal Challenges

2 years 5 months ago

Fortnite Chapter 3 has arrived, and in Season 1, you'll be earning XP through a variety of new challenges. But the bulk of that XP is going to come every single week with weekly challenges, better known this season as "seasonal challenges." Such challenges in the first week are fairly straightforward, so we'll post them all here even though you'll maybe be all set to handle them on your own from there, so long as this isn't your first time playing Fortnite. And even if it is, no worries, we're here to help.

Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1 - Week 1 Seasonal Challenges

There are nine seasonal challenges in Week 1. These challenges seem designed to get you acquainted with the new island by doing things like discovering landmarks, collecting ammo, and swinging by The Daily Bugle, Spider-Man's hangout on the new Fortnite island. Here are your nine seasonal challenges in Fortnite Week 1.

Apex Legends Loses Game Director And Design Director

2 years 5 months ago

Apex Legends game director Chad Grenier is leaving Respawn. Grenier, who was a co-founding member of Respawn and has worked there for the past 11 years, said in a blog post that it's been an "unforgettable ride" working with Respawn for so long. Design director Jason McCord has left Respawn as well.

"But today, this crazy chapter comes to an end," Grenier said.

Grenier added that Apex Legends will continue to be in "great hands," and that he is confident that "this game and community will continue to be taken care of." The developer has already planned out "years worth" of new new content.

Taking over for Grenier as Apex Legends game director is Steven Ferreira. He joined the Apex Legends development team in June 2019 and he's been running half the team since then, Grenier said.

"At Respawn, we've always believed that new leadership and new team members mean new ideas, new energy, and new innovations. This couldn't be a more accurate statement to describe Steven's many contributions over the years," Grenier said.

"As I step away from Respawn, it’s important to let you know how much everyone at the studio and I appreciate the fans and this passionate community. Without you, this whole making games thing just doesn't work," he said. "And we've accomplished some truly extraordinary things together, from integrating fan art into the game to seeing the community bring Apex Legends stories to life on Twitter. It's been an absolute joy to watch the game and community grow."

"You can bet I'll be cheering from the sidelines along the way."

As for McCord, the 11-year Respawn veteran is leaving as well. "It's tough to leave a game and a team that you love," McCord said. "But, it's time to do something new. No plans quite yet. Going to walk the Earth for a bit and recharge. Stay tuned!"

Halo Subreddit Locked Down Due To Spiraling Toxicity As 343 Talks Progression, Playlists, Microtransactions, And More

2 years 5 months ago

The Halo subreddit has been temporarily locked down due to toxicity on the forum that has "spiraled out of control," according to the mods. This happened after 343 community director Brian Jarrard wrote an impassioned post about the state of Halo Infinite and calling for civil discourse around the game.

"The amount of toxicity on the sub from both sides has made it impossible for people to have civil discussions, which is what the mod team strives for regardless of opinion," the mods said. "Some users on the sub have even been responsible for doxxing and death threats. We're temporarily putting the sub on lockdown so people can hopefully settle down a bit and we can hit the reset button before launch. At the end of the day this is a video game and this level of vitriol is unwarranted. Take the weekend off, we're reopening on Monday."

Jarrard said in a lengthy post on Reddit in which he said he understands and generally agrees with some of the frustrations that Halo Infinite fans have with the game. He doesn't, however, agree with the manner in which some fans are expressing their opinions. "Call me a shill, a liar, corp speak, etc. as you want, but I've never lied to this community and never will," Jarrard said. "And I'm not saying myself are 343 are a 'victim' in any way - that's yet another narrative some folks here have chosen to apply. It's my job to come in here, listen, franky take it on the chin, and despite personally being very put off by the way in which many are expressing themselves, still ensure that we are advocating for players internally. We do that regardless of it being positive or negative and always will."
