Paper Mario Coming To Nintendo Switch Online Next Week

2 years 4 months ago

Nintendo has revealed that Paper Mario is joining the Nintendo Switch Online catalogue next week.

Revealed on Twitter, the company released a trailer for the Nintendo 64 game, sharing that it will join the Switch’s online games service next week on December 10. However, because it’s an N64 game, not all Online users will have access to it as you must be subscribed to the Expansion Pack version of the service to play it.

“Adventure through the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Peach from Bowser’s clutches as a paper-thin version of Mario,” Nintendo’s tweet reads. “Paper Mario unfolds on Nintendo Switch for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members on 12/10.”

Originally released in 2000 on the N64, Paper Mario was a Mario-centric spin-off experiment developed by the company. Opting to drop the more classic platforming elements of the standard Super Mario series, Paper Mario instead took our favorite plumber and his friends on an RPG-like adventure, complete with turn-based combat. Its popularity quickly grew from there and today, the Paper Mario series has multiple entries in it.

An Animal Crossing DLC Glitch Has Been Making Villagers Get Naked, and No One Knows Why

2 years 4 months ago

A glitch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Happy Home Paradise DLC leads to the game's villagers going about their daily business without any clothes on - and nobody knows quite why.

As spotted by Polygon, the glitch appears to take place in the Happy Home Paradise DLC's cafe area. While the DLC comes with a number of different facilities to unlock, this one area appears to be affected, but it's not clear what the trigger is for the issue.

Since first spotted, a number of fans coming across the glitch have taken to social media to share their favourite nudes - though thankfully, it's far more harmless than it sounds. So far, sightings of a number of characters have been shared including those of local Octopus Marina, Molly the duck and more, with some fans even tagging the content as NSFW.

Chorus review - satisfying space combat interrupted by an annoying story

2 years 4 months ago

Chorus (not Chorvs, as the posters might suggest) is a tale of two different games. On one hand, Chorus is a great space combat game that should satisfy plenty as you barrel roll your way through enemy fleets. But on the other hand, there's the cinematic, action-adventure experience weaved in - and it's this half that clips Chorus' otherwise beautiful wings.

Chorus' combat is the highlight. It's what you'll be waiting to get back to when the game gives you literally anything else. Swerving past enemy ships, tailing them and eventually blowing them up is always a thrill, even though it's nothing original, and the speed and fluidity of Chorus' movements are enough to keep it fun.

Official Battlefield Twitter Account Addresses Leaked Holiday Skins

2 years 4 months ago

A handful of supposed Battlefield 2042 leaks appeared on social media yesterday and, due to their winter holiday theming, some fans were upset.

New skins are likely a welcome addition to the online FPS, but some fans on the official Battlefield 2042 subreddit voiced their concern that a “Father Winter” skin for one of the specialists was a step too far – fans fear these skins indicate that 2042 will head in the route of Call of Duty: Warzone, which includes skins from Saw, Donnie Darko, and other less-serious cosmetics. The concern amongst fans is that 2042 is a more serious shooter compared to Warzone where skins similar to “Father Winter” might appear. You can see some of the supposed leaked skins below, courtesy of Battlefield Bulletin on Twitter.

Final Fantasy XIV Releases Paid Items To Get You to Level 80 & Ready for Endwalker as Early Access Begins

2 years 4 months ago

Today Square Enix opened the floodgates of the early access of Final Fantasy XIV’s Endwalker expansion and released a few paid items to get people up to speed.

While now the expansion is available for everyone who pre-ordered, if you’re jumping into the game right now, it may take you a while to get to level 80 and complete the story so far.

If you don’t want to go through that and jump immediately to the beginning of Endwalker, you can with new items released on the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store.

The Tales of Adventure: Shadowbringers item (priced at $25) will allow you to skill the whole story all the way to the beginning of Endwalker. That being said, it won’t raise your level at all. It’s worth mentioning that you’ll still be able to rewatch all the cutscenes and redo the main story at a later time via the New Game+ feature.

The Tales of Adventure: One Hero’s Journey III category of items (also priced at $25), will kick one job all the way up to level 80. It will also give you level-appropriate equipment and some starting gil. You have to purchase the specific kind for the job you want, but it won’t actually get you through the story. This isn’t available for the new Sage and Reaper jobs.

Basically, if you’re getting into Final Fantasy XIV today and want to immediately get into Endwalker, you’ll need both.

On top of this, you can also get the Blackbosom Reaper scythe weapon if you’re a fan of Edda Blackbosom. It costs $3 for a single weapon or $8 if you want the bundle with all.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker Players Are Queuing to Play... Then Getting Error Codes

2 years 4 months ago

Players heading into Final Fantasy 14's recently launched Endwalker expansion are reporting a number of problems with the game, including long queue times, and even error codes sending them back to the end of the line.

As is quite often the case when it comes to content launched for MMOs, FF14's Endwalker expansion is seeing some teething issues when it comes to server wait times. As reported by VG247, the server queue times for the game seem to be causing additional frustration for players due to the fact that they're being mixed in with a number of error codes that seemingly keep pushing players back to the end of the queue.

As per reports from fans, error 2002 appears to be the main code that players are encountering when sitting in server queues. "Error 2002" tends to occur when selecting a character in the selection menu. The code has been known to infuriate fans during periods of high traffic or when a login queue exceeds 17,000 players.

How Q-Games Got the Rights From Sony to Bring Back Lost PS4 Exclusive The Tomorrow Children

2 years 4 months ago

In a piece of rare and exciting news, Kyoto-based developer Q-Games recently announced that it had acquired the rights to its 2016 PlayStation 4 exclusive The Tomorrow Children, which was originally published by Sony Interactive Entertainment as a free-to-play online game, only to be shut down after just over a year. The deal will allow Q-Games to make the game available again for the first time since November 2017.

Now, Q-Games CEO Dylan Cuthbert has opened up about the process of getting his game back from Sony, the details of this unusual new deal, and some of the changes he plans to make ahead of the game’s second launch in 2022.

In a new interview, Cuthbert told IGN Japan that he had enquired about the possibility of acquiring the rights multiple times over the years, beginning back when Allan Becker was still head of Sony Japan Studio. Initially, he said, the response was that Q-Games would likely have to repay the entire development cost of the original game. While this was not a realistic option for Q-Games, the ongoing support from Tomorrow Children fans convinced Cuthbert to persevere.

There were two key changes that led to the successful deal, both of which came down in part to veteran developer Cuthbert’s decades of networking. First of all, in 2019, Double Fine veteran Greg Rice – an old friend of Cuthbert’s – joined SIE as Head of PlayStation Creators, becoming the company’s liaison for independent developers.

Valve shows off Steam Deck's cute carry case (and the cardboard box everything comes in)

2 years 4 months ago

Usually, the first step after purchasing an expensive bit of portable consumer electronics (apart from turning it on and going "woo", of course) is to find some sort of case to put it in. Ordinarily this is the point where I just cram my new purchase into a sock with a resigned sigh and have done with it, but Valve has you covered as far as Steam Deck goes, and has offered a look at the cute little carry case all units of its handheld gaming PC will ship with. And also its box.

We've already seen a fair amount of Steam Deck in the run up to its release - including a peek at its innards and the categorisation system Valve is employing so purchasers know exactly what is and isn't compatible with their new device on Steam - but the company's latest update is all about what's on the outside. Specifically, the various bits of packaging Steam Deck will come in.

Jak And Daxter: Naughty Dog Leads And Other PlayStation Devs Reflect On The Precursor Legacy's 20th Anniversary

2 years 4 months ago

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, the Naughty Dog-developed platformer that spawned two sequels and multiple spinoffs, is now 20 years old, and to celebrate the anniversary, Sony has rounded up some retrospective thoughts from Naughty Dog devs and other PlayStation studio leads.

Hitting PlayStation 2 on December 3, 2001, The Precursor Legacy is officially 20 years old, and as noted by Sony Interactive Entertainment content communications manager, Tim Turi, who wrote today’s PlayStation Blog post, it marks an interesting point for Naughty Dog. Today, Naughty Dog is best known for Uncharted and The Last of Us, but before those two franchises, their bread and butter was Jak and Daxter, the series the studio developed after its bout of Crash Bandicoot games.

Developer One-O-One Games and Meta Publishing have pulled the curtain back on Aftermath, a new survival horror game coming next year. Players control an astronaut who returns to Earth after a mission only to find the planet upended by an alien invasion.

After a botched reentry to Earth, protagonist Charlie Gray finds herself alone, emotionally broken, but driven by a singular mission to locate her missing daughter. PlayStation Is Reportedly Working on an Xbox Game Pass Competitor

2 years 4 months ago

Sony is working on a competing Xbox Game Pass service for PlayStation according to a new report.

Bloomberg says sources familiar with Sony’s plans shared details of a new service code named “Spartacus” where PlayStation owners can pay a monthly fee for access to a library of modern and classic games. This is the same model used for Xbox’s popular Game Pass service.

Documents on the project revealed three tiers for the upcoming service. The first includes the same benefits as PlayStation Plus, which is required for online gaming and comes with some free games each month. A higher tier offers access to the gaming catalog like Game Pass, and a third tier will include extended demos, game streaming, and access to a larger library that includes PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games.

Given that backward compatibility has been a popular request from PlayStation owners, using a new service to introduce older games to the library could be an enticing move.

The new service is expected to launch in spring 2022 and will merge Sony’s two existing subscription services PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now — a cloud service that lets users stream games directly to their consoles. According to Bloomberg, the PlayStation Plus name will remain, but PlayStation Now will be phased out as a brand.

Josef Fares Game It Takes Two Is Hit With Claim from Take-Two Interactive

2 years 4 months ago

Grand Theft Auto parent company Take-Two Interactive has hit Hazelight Studio's game, It Takes Two, with a trademark claim. Records indicate that Hazelight has seemingly been forced to abandon ownership of the game's name.

In a statement to Eurogamer, a Hazelight spokesperson told the outlet that the studio cannot comment on ongoing disputes, but hopes that the situation will be resolved. Take-Two has also been filing trademark claims for names that include words like "rockstar," "social club," "mafia," and "civilization." These words all have connections to products or services that Take-Two owns, such as Rockstar Games, Rockstar Social Club, and the Mafia franchise.

Not only is Hazelight affected, but other businesses unrelated to the games industry are as well. A clothing brand "Max Fayne" has been included in Take-Two's trademark claims, presumably due to its closeness to the studio's Max Payne franchise. An axe-throwing company in Florida called "Rockstar Axe Throwing" is trying to oppose Take-Two's trademark claim too, while a music book brand called "Think Like a Rockstar" has abandoned its trademark following Take-Two's claim.

Editor's blog: Pardon our dust this weekend

2 years 4 months ago

Hello, hi and how do you do! Just a quick note before we head into the weekend - tonight we're migrating our CMS from its old platform to a shiny new one. Which I'm sure you don't really care too much about, but it does mean that from 11pm tonight some functionality will go down while we carry out the migration - chiefly on-site comments as well as new account registrations and access to our subscriber-only content.

We'll also be unable to post any news stories during that time, so if Microsoft does buy Nintendo tomorrow morning we're kind of screwed. Here's hoping nothing like that happens, though, and the process should be complete tomorrow evening, at which point all those features will be restored. It'll be like nothing ever happened!

PlayStation Working On Xbox Game Pass Competitor With Three Tiers Of Service, New Report Reveals

2 years 4 months ago

Sony is reportedly working on an Xbox Game Pass competitor that will include three tiers of service and essentially see PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now merge.

This news comes by way of a new Bloomberg report that says the service will be subscription-based, much like Sony's current Plus and Now offerings and of course, Xbox Game Pass. The service, currently code-named Spartacus, will let PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 owners pay a monthly fee for access to a catalog of both modern and classic games.

Click here to watch embedded media

The subscription will be spread across three different tiers and Bloomberg’s report says the first (and cheapest) tier will basically be what players get with PlayStation Plus at the moment. The second tier will open players up to a larger library of PlayStation 4 games and eventually PlayStation 5 games. The third tier would include the services of the first two tiers and access to “extended game demos, game streaming, and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games,” Bloomberg writes.
