EWS podcast episode 154: the best seasonal updates special

2 years 7 months ago

With an unseasonal theme this week, the Electronic Wireless Show podcast is about our favourite seasonal updates in games. You know, where they make it all snowy or put pumpkins everywhere. That kind of thing. The podcast is substantially derailed, however, when we start cyberbullying Matthew about food yet again, and also discuss what the seasonal spirit of The Summer Of Games would look like if personified (like how Easter gets the Easter Bunny).

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen | Who Is Savathûn? A Lore Refresher

2 years 7 months ago

The name Savathûn is everywhere, both inside Destiny 2 and out of it. Following Bungie's The Witch Queen expansion reveal back in August (Hive Guardians, what?!) and Season of the Lost bringing the Destiny 2 community to the best place it has been since launch, there is a lot of lore Guardians are catching up on. It's no exaggeration to say that Savathûn has been a driving force of the events of Destiny fiction for years, acting as the trigger or catalyst for many of our Guardian's most involved strikes, raids, and other missions. Because of that, some may need a little refresher on the lore surrounding the central character of the upcoming expansion. With so many returning and new players, here is the biggest deep dive you'll find on who the Witch Queen truly is.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate | Game Informer Live

2 years 7 months ago

It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for another Game Informer livestream on Twitch. Join us at 2 p.m. Central as we go fast – very fast – in Sonic Colors: Ultimate

Click here to watch embedded media

The original Sonic Colors raced to the Wii and DS in 2010. While Sonic’s 3D outings had a less-than-stellar track record up to that point, Colors became the rare exception as one of the better-received entries during the hedgehog’s dark days. The game launches Sonic to outer space, where he teams up the Wisps, colorful aliens enslaved by Dr. Eggman that bestow a variety of fun abilities. One Wisp can turn Sonic into a ricocheting laser beam while another morphs him into a powerful drill. Eight cool powers combined with a fun blend of 3D and 2D platforming formed a winning formula that got Sonic back into the good graces of lapsed fans (for a little while at least).

If you missed Colors back in the day, the Ultimate edition launches September 7 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. It remasters this gem with 4K resolution graphics and 60 fps performance. While it may not correct every flaw of the original, it’s the best way to play one of Sonic’s more beloved adventures.

Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Brings Night And Day Changes To Magic: The Gathering

2 years 7 months ago

Wizards of the Coast has begun the grand unveiling of the first of two fall sets for Magic: the Gathering, ushering a return to the gothic horror-inspired Innistrad. With Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, the plane's denizens are welcoming the Harvesttide Festival, a central event to the set with card art depicting rituals of the festival. Our prior visit to the plane left the day and night cycle in disarray. Now, as the days pass and the Harvest Festival approaches, the nights have been growing abnormally longer, perfect for the horrors that go bump in the night to stir again.

Midnight Hunt is back to being full of werewolves, vampires, zombies, and other terrifying creatures, instead of the Eldrazi threats from the last visit. A few mechanics have been revived (some with a new spin!), and the graveyard is a focus again in this morbid setting. Here's a look at what to expect in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt:

Only True The Shining Fans Can Get A Perfect Score In This Trivia Quiz

2 years 7 months ago

It’s kind of nuts to think that Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining was met with such a lukewarm critical reception and soft box office when it released back in 1980.

Indeed, with such a notoriously fraught production, and with Stephen King himself declaring the film as a “misogynistic” misinterpretation of the source material, it’s truly amazing that the legendary Manhattan-born filmmaker’s one-and-only horror pic has not only endured and weathered the storm but has gone on to become an outright masterpiece in the horror genre.

With all that in mind, then, we thought that now would be a good time to revisit Kubrick’s claustrophobic supernatural classic in Twinfinite’s latest movie quiz. All you need to do is answer these twelve trivia questions and, voila, we’ll be able to separate the wheat from the blood-drenched chaff and figure out how much of a The Shining fan you really are.

So, without further ado, grab your fire-axes and get ready to do your best Jack Nicholson impression as we journey back to the haunted hallways of The Overlook Hotel. Let’s get into it!

Spectre Aims to Be the Splinter Cell Game That Ubisoft Won't Make

2 years 7 months ago

Spectre developers Jordan Crawford and Fred Toms first met while working at a restaurant together in their teenage years. They bonded quickly over video games – and one game in particular: Splinter Cell. The duo would make Splinter Cell jokes to other employees and introduce themselves to restaurant guests as ‘Sam Fisher’.” After decades as friends and a COVID-induced separation, the two veteran developers, who have each worked in the industry separately, decided to form Symbiosis Games together, “a nod to our symbiotic relationship,” Toms said. “Jordan is a very artistic and visual person, while I am absolutely the opposite of that.”

Their minds kept coming back to Splinter Cell, a beloved franchise that, outside of a few Fisher cameos in other Ubisoft titles, has laid dormant since 2013’s Splinter Cell Blacklist. “We thought, 'What better way to introduce Symbiosis Games to the world with a game that features deep-seeded teamwork and partnership, heavily inspired by the glory days of our favourite franchise?’” Toms told IGN. And so Spectre was born.

Magic: The Gathering is Getting a Day-Night Cycle in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt

2 years 7 months ago

New details have been revealed about Magic: The Gathering’s next card set, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, including its rare dual lands and unique mechanics – as well the return of a recognizable ability for its werewolves, now formalized with new keywords and a shifting day-night mechanic.

Midnight Hunt revisits Magic’s gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad during a time when the nights are growing unnaturally long and the local Harvesttide Festival is being threatened by werewolves. Werewolves have been an iconic part of Innistrad since its introduction in 2011, and the idea behind the transforming dual-faced cards that define them has been tweaked in small but significant ways here.

Flip through the gallery below to see brand new cards from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt:

Werewolves traditionally have a human “day” side that can be played normally and a werewolf “night” side that they need to transform into, but the the triggers to do so have now been made proper keywords: Daybound and Nightbound. These still behave the way previous werewolf cards generally have – Daybound triggers when a player casts no spells during their turn, flipping them to the night side, while Nightbound triggers when they cast two or more, flipping them back.

Grim Tranquility Announced

2 years 7 months ago

Startup developer Poorly Timed Games, which is headed up by Destiny veteran Chris Wright, has announced its first game: Grim Tranquility, an isometric-view roguelite tactical RPG that's coming soon to PC via Steam.

In Grim Tranquility, the story goes that humanity has exhausted the earth of habitability, and so people must venture out into space and find a new home somewhere in the stars. Naturally, a hostile alien empire they encounter isn't too keen on allowing that to happen, and conflict ensues. Check out the announcement trailer above and the first screenshots in the gallery below.

Climate change, bureaucratic corruption, and environmental damage fuel the story and Grim Tranquility's procedural gameplay. Poorly Timed Games says you'll be able to "upgrade primitive Earth weapons, recruit new members with enhanced abilities, and influence alien officials with bribes for beneficial buffs or overthrow them in high stakes boss battles."

Poorly Timed is based out of Redmond, Washington, and boasts a diverse group of developers. Wishlist Grim Tranquility on Steam and look for more on it at PAX West this weekend.

Horizon: Forbidden West Doesn't Offer a PS4-PS5 Upgrade

2 years 7 months ago

Horizon: Forbidden West won't offer a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 on its standard or special editions, and you can't pay to upgrade a standard edition to one that does include the PS5 version.

As previously announced, Forbidden West will be receiving distinct PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game – you can play the PS4 version on PS5, but it won't receive the same visual and performance upgrades. Revealed on the game's FAQ page under the headline "Can I upgrade my PS4 version to the PS5 version?", it's revealed that Standard and Special editions of the game will come with no dual entitlement (i.e. include PS4 and PS5 versions).

Dual Entitlement is included in the (naturally more expensive) Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions, but they are entirely separate, full-game purchases. Unlike other PS5 games like Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, there won't be a less expensive paid upgrade, either: "There are no plans for an update offer from standard to digital deluxe edition at this time," reads the FAQ.

Konami's eFootball 2022 Launches This Month, But It'll Be Extremely Limited

2 years 7 months ago

Konami has revealed the release date for its upcoming free-to-play title, eFootball 2022. The company has announced that its replacement for the Pro Evolution Soccer series will launch on September 30 – though it should be noted that the game will be limited in both features and game modes until a post-launch update this fall.

Konami announced that eFootball 2022 will provide its users with a "taste of what to expect from the new free-to-play football simulation platform" when it launches for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC on September 30. The game will then receive its first major update later this Fall, which will coincide with the launch of eFootball 2022 on iOS and Android devices.

Some fans may feel disappointed with the title's launch, although Konami has previously said that it's 'basically a demo''. eFootball's offline mode, for example, will only contain nine teams and six stadiums when it releases. Whilst those teams include the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, and Arsenal, many may feel disappointed that after a busy transfer window, teams such as PSG, Manchester City, and Real Madrid won't be playable in the mode when the game comes out. We'd previously heard that the launch version of the game will also be missing some in-match mechanics.

Crusader Kings Studio CEO Resigns Over Company Strategy Concerns

2 years 7 months ago

Paradox Interactive, the developer-publisher behind a titles including Stellaris, Hearts of Iron, and Crusader Kings, is currently in the midst of an unexpected change in leadership after its CEO resigned due to the company's future strategy.

As announced by Paradox, Ebba Ljungerud is stepping down from her duties as CEO at the publisher. The company has said that her departure from the role will take place with immediate effect although she will continue working with Paradox for a period of time to "ensure a good handover".

According to the publisher, Ljungerud's decision to leave the role comes "due to differing views on the company's strategy going forward." Despite her resignation, it seems as though the decision was amicable, with Paradox praising the now-former CEO for the 'fantastic job' that she carried out during her tenure at the company.

"During her leadership the organisation, player base and our game projects have been strengthened and grown which give the company a strong base for future growth." reads a statement from Paradox. "We regret that she has decided to resign but wish her all the best in future endeavours, says Håkan Sjunnesson, Chairman of the Board."

No details have been offered as to what those differing views are, and why they became irreconcilable enough that the CEO felt she should resign.

CD Projekt Is Already Being a Lot More Careful About Announcing Cyberpunk and Witcher Release Dates

2 years 7 months ago

After Cyberpunk 2077's disastrous launch, CD Projekt made a promise to change how it markets its games, including talking about the games closer to their launch. The company's latest investor calls saw it keeping that promise, as it refused to offer dates for the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk and The Witcher 3 – and wouldn't even guarantee that they won't be pushed into 2022 if necessary.

Both Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 are due to receive new console upgrades during late 2021, something CD Projekt reconfirmed during its latest financial reports. During an H1 2021 Earnings live stream, an investor asked the company to be more specific about when those next-gen upgrades would arrive, or if they could feasibly be delayed into next year.

SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski refused to be drawn on the questions, making clear that it was part of CD Projekt's new philosophy: "Our target is to release the next-gen version of [Cyberpunk 2077] late this year [...] At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year, and taking into account the fact that this project still remains in deveopment, we can't say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change, of course.

Sword of Symphony Is a Viral Music Action Game That Got TikTok Famous By Accident

2 years 7 months ago

Stephen Ddungu didn't know much about TikTok at all when a clip of his upcoming game project, Sword of Symphony, started circulating on the video platform last month.

A clip of a young boy attacking an enemy using musical combos that Ddungu had previously posted on other social channels was reposted on TikTok by an account called @gamedevblaster on August 2. As of the publication of this piece, it has gotten over 335,000 views, and the comments are full of praise and excitement.

Ddungu tells me he was alerted to the sudden popularity of his clip by a friend, so he made an account and posted his own video, introducing himself to his newly-found fans. That video has now been watched 1.6 million times, and a second follow-up he posted later has been seen nearly 3 million times.

"It's crazy how fast stuff gets out there and gets popular so quickly on TikTok," Ddungu says. "And just the kind of things that get popular; weird things get so many views. Other people are working for content and only get a few views here, and then you get someone doing a random, weird-looking dance and it's getting millions of views. I guess people like what people like."

Ddungu has always been a musician, and loves to both play and compose. He has a music channel on YouTube where he posts orchestral covers of video game songs, and its success directly led to his eventual work on Sword of Symphony.
