In a recent report from the good folks over at Eurogameran inside source has confirmed to the site that this era of gaming is finally making it onto the Nintendo Switch Online library. This report follows hot on the heels of a podcast earlier this week that claimed the same. New World graphics card failures down to dodgy soldering, says EVGA

2 years 7 months ago

Back in July, reports began circulating that the beta of Amazon's MMO New World was bricking pricey EVGA-manufactured RTX 3090 graphics cards. A subsequent statement from Amazon insisted the beta was "safe to play", and that's now been corroborated by EVGA, after its investigation into the issue revealed hardware failures were the result of dodgy soldering.

When reports of card failures began to surface, some users speculated the problem was due to power spikes and overheating caused by uncapped framerates in the New World beta's menus. While Amazon set about capping the framerate as a precautionary measure, EVGA began replacing affected cards and investigating returns to find out exactly what was going on.

Sharing its findings with PC World, EVGA has now revealed that while it wasn't able to replicate the issue using a copy of the New World beta, under X-ray analysis the less-than-two-dozen impacted RTX 3090s it received - all originating from an early 2020 production run - displayed "poor workmanship" on the soldering around the MOSFET circuits that powered the cards.

Some video game music recommendations for Bandcamp Friday

2 years 7 months ago

Today is another Bandcamp Friday, a monthly event where the DRM-free music store waives its cut of sales to put more cash in artists' pockets. It's a good day to buy music! But which music? Plenty of video game soundtracks are on Bandcamp, so you can go looking for your faves. Me, I can offer a few tips for music that's kinda video game music but not necessarily, music that's inspired by games or even recorded inside games. But please, do share your hot reccies (recommendations) with us all too.

Blackout: The Darkest Night is a mystery CYOA well worth a few spins

2 years 7 months ago

Despite it forming a sizeable portion of my favourite games ever, I don't play all that much interactive fiction. It's a strange realm of games. It asks very little, and yet is also sort of hard to get into.

Blackout: The Darkest Night is a "choose your own adventure" style piece with some light jigsaw puzzles. Where even some of my favourites took a bit of time and focus to draw me in, Blackout grabbed me before I was even sure what it was.

Life Is Strange: True Colors’ Empath Superpower Is a Perfect Fit for the Series – Hands-on Preview

2 years 7 months ago

I’ll admit I was a little bit skeptical when I first read that Alex Chen’s supernatural power in Life Is Strange: True Colors was being an empath. After Max’s ability to manipulate time in the first game, and Daniel’s telekinesis in the sequel, the ability to feel and take on the emotions of those around Alex seemed like it would be weak in comparison when it comes to its impact on gameplay. But after playing the opening chapter of True Colors over the past couple of days, I’m delighted to admit that my skepticism was misplaced. In fact, Alex’s empath ability might be the best gameplay hook since Max’s superpower back in the first game, if not ever.

The game opens up with Alex at the Helping Hands Group Home, speaking with her therapist. Having resided there for eight years — and having had her fair share of ups and downs in that time — she’s finally leaving to live with her brother Gabe in Haven Springs, Colorado.

It’s in this opening scene that one of True Colors’ most notable visual improvements can be spotted. Alex’s face is more subtly animated. Furrows of her brow when she struggles to comprehend a question or is frantically thinking about how to answer. Glances to the side, a flourish of rapid blinks as she dodges questions. Reluctant to accept that reuniting with her brother and interacting with the townsfolk of Haven Springs may be more challenging for her than the normal person.

The Chip Shortage Affecting Gaming 'Will Remain Very Tight' Until at Least Next September

2 years 7 months ago

The chip shortage currently affecting all parts of gaming is not likely to let up until the end of next year, according to Toshiba.

In a new report from Bloomberg, the publication writes that Toshiba Corp., one of the major companies that creates power-regulating chips found in graphics cards, gaming consoles, and more, says the chip shortage will likely continue through the end of 2022.

IGN previously reported on this chip shortage, citing that Intel believes it could drag on into 2023, and this new Bloomberg report seems to reaffirm this timeline. Toshiba director, Takeshi Kamebuchi, told Bloomberg that "the supply of chips will remain very tight until at least September next year." Kamebuchi also said that some of Toshiba's customers won't be fully served all of the chips they need until 2023.

However, Toshiba doesn't mention which customers, so perhaps Sony and Microsoft won't find themselves waiting until 2023 to get the chips they need for their PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

Kamebuchi cites material shortages and a demand that's constantly outpacing chip output as reasons for Toshiba's inability to fulfill orders. With this chip shortage possibly lasting until 2023, Toshiba is planning to invest $545 million in its production between now and 2024 to boost the output of its power semiconductors, according to Bloomberg.

New Destiny 2 Update Adds Cross-Play Voice Chat

2 years 7 months ago

A new Destiny 2 update went live yesterday and it enabled cross-play voice chat, a little over a week after cross-platform play was added to the game.

Bungie posted the patch notes for yesterday’s 3.3.0.1 Hotfix coming to Destiny 2 and in them, the company lists cross-play voice chat as now enabled in-game, as reported by GameSpot. This voice chat feature comes just after the launch of Season 15, which is called the Season of the Lost, on August 24.

At the bottom of the patch notes, in the "General" section, you'll find "Cross Play voice chat enabled" as a bullet point. However, Bungie lists some communication privacy issues that aren't working as intended for Xbox players. Here's what those issues are:

  • Xbox players will still hear voice and receive invites from anyone even if privacy settings are set to "friends" or "in-game friends."

  • Xbox players will still hear voice from non-Xbox players even if "You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice and text" is set to "blocked."
  • Xbox players will still be able to hear other Xbox players in Fireteam Chat or Team Chat, even if that player is on their mute list.

This Dragon Age Origins Mod Imports Isabella's Dragon Age 2 Design

2 years 7 months ago

Dragon Age Origins is the first game in the iconic fantasy BioWare series, and for many, it is the most enjoyable. What was not enjoyable was Isabella's design in the first game – especially compared to the sequel. In Dragon Age 2, the fiery pirate became the very definition of a "glow up." For those who prefer the more personalized style of Dragon Age 2's Isabella, this Dragon Age Origins mod gives you what you want.

Created by modder 'GirlStandStill' over on Nexus Mods, this Dragon Age Origins mod does exactly what it promises: it imports the model of the devil-may-care Isabella from Dragon Age 2, bringing her into the first game to replace her original, more generic-NPC look.

Personally, I love this. Isabella is one of my favorite characters in the Dragon Age-verse. She's overcome so much to become who she is, but she still has room to grow when we meet her in Dragon Age 2. Don't we all? Romancing her is one of my most favorite memories from this series because that is when you truly see her growth and get to watch her learn to trust others again and trust her own voice. I found that great to see, and she's a beacon for many of the other companions, including Fenris, making her a treasured character.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7 Will End With One Final, Epic Mission Against An Alien Invasion

2 years 7 months ago

If there is one thing Epic Games is good at regarding Fortnite, it's making each season go out with a bang. Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7 has focused heavily on aliens, so the final blowout will be Operation: Sky Fire, one final mission against invaders.

"With the Mothership’s sights set on the Imagined Order’s secret base at Corny Complex, Slone has hatched a plan to end the Invasion once and for all," says Epic Games about the upcoming season-ender. "You’ve answered her calls, worked as an undercover agent for the IO - now it’s time to infiltrate The Last Reality and put a stop to the Alien’s occupation."

It's all going down at 4 p.m. ET on September 12, challenging players of the battle royale to sneak aboard the mothership to send one last message: "Stop it, please." Just kidding, that's not the message, but if it's anything like previous seasonal enders, it's sure to be a wild ride

Epic asks players to join the servers about 30 minutes before the start time so that everyone that wants to take part, can. Those interested can join the ending of season 7 with up to 16 friends, which should ensure that nobody gets shot in the dome for trying to stop the aliens.

One Piece Live-Action Netflix Series Teases Logo and First Episode Title

2 years 7 months ago

Netflix is kicking into high gear with its live-action take on the popular manga series One Piece as fans get a tease of what the first episode will be. The streaming platform revealed the first script that shows the logo for the series and the title of the first episode that pays homage to the series’ origins when it was a one-shot called “Romance Dawn”.

Unveiled on NetflixGeeked’s Twitter page, the post shows the front cover of the screenplay for the episode, but if you look carefully, you can see the title for the first episode titled “Romance Dawn” written by showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda.

This should ring a bell for fans of the series as the name comes from the first time that One Piece was published back in 1996 in Shonen Jump when it was known only by that title. The one-shot piece became the blueprint for the manga that became a worldwide phenomenon as well as being the first arc in the anime series.

Minecraft Players Build Insanely Huge & Detailed Map “City of Lithonia”

Over the years, we’ve seen some insane Minecraft creations, ranging from frame-by-frame recreations of landscapes to even massive cities that are ridiculously detailed and complicated for a title that many simply dub a kids game. Despite how impressive most of those creations have been, though, few can hold a candle to the City of Lithonia.

In a recent post to the gaming subreddit, user VarunaMC showed off their recent creation: a 5000×5000 city with over 3000+ buildings, all with fully furnished interiors. This massive city was dubbed City of Lithonia, and you can see it for yourself below.

Nicolas Refn Wanted Kojima to Cast Keanu Reeves as Cliff Unger in Death Stranding

2 years 7 months ago

Mads Mikkelsen did an amazing job as Cliff “Combat Veteran” Unger in Death Stranding. In our review of the game, we stated that his performance leads to some incredible story moments that were truly moving.

No matter how good he was as the character, though, there is always a fascinating what-if scenario to be had where you wonder what it would look like if someone else had played the role. Someone like…Keanu Reeves perhaps?

While Keanu Reeves playing the role of Cliff Unger might seem random and out of place now, it was actually something that Death Stranding actor Nicolas Refn, who played Heartman, recommended every time he spoke with Kojima about the project. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise for anyone who knows Refn, as he actually was the director for Reeves on The Neon Demon back in 2016.

This news came by way of Kojima, who recently tweeted out some behind-the-scenes info on the casting of the character, which you can see below.
