I don’t usually like survival games. I like the idea of survival games – the idea of making a safe home out of the wilderness and learning to make my own boots out of rabbit skin, and so on. I would never be able to do this in real life, obviously, because I am small and fragile and I don’t really enjoy even the most glamp of glamping. Sadly it usually turns out that I can’t do it in games, either.
It's been a big day for news for EDF fans. Not only did D3 publisher reveal the cool-looking voxel title Earth Defense Force: World Brothers, but PlayStation Blog Japan then followed up with the announcement that a sixth mainline sequel is already in the works for a 2021 release.
Earth Defense Force 6 - of no surprise to anybody - will see the brave men and women of The EDF take up arms once again to combat the threat of giant bugs who are rampaging through our world's capitals. In an amusingly dark storyline, it seems that the previous invasion has reduced the global populace to just 10%, and society itself stands on the brink of collapse. Furthermore, some of the aliens that came to Earth have established colonies on the planet, leading to a perpetual civil war between humans and the new colonists.
Hades just got its last major update before the game leaves early access and launches proper.
The Blood Price update adds a significant amount to Supergiant's wonderful rogue-like dungeon crawler (patch notes over on Steam). Expect new enemies, mini-bosses and a hidden boss, as well as new story events with almost every character. The video below runs through the update's innards.
The next step for Hades is to leave Early Access for the v1.0 launch, which is set for later in 2020. This includes the true ending of the story, "plus many additional finishing touches". Supergiant wouldn't be drawn on additional launch platforms or timing, but console is surely in the works.
Hundreds of years ago, The League of Shadows burned London to the ground. Now in 2020, you're able to watch them on-screen in Fornite. The world is a wild place.
As promised, Fortnite will be hosting a Christopher Nolan film in-game this Friday. While the phrase "film" was used previously, the lineup actually involves three Nolan flicks, but you'll only see one of them depending on your region. Those three are: Inception, Batman Begins and The Prestige. All good picks! It's not like we expected something with a hard-R rating. Oh, and there's going to be some musical guests too....or something (Diplo Presents: Thomas Wesley, Young Thug and Noah Cyrus).
For reference on all of the big gaming regions: the US will be showing Inception on Friday at 8AM ET, 8PM ET and 11:55PM ET. The UK will see The Prestige at 12PM ET on that same day. Japan will also host Inception on Friday at the same trio of times as the US. Canada will host Prestige at 12PM ET on Friday.
It's hard to pick a favorite! Batman Begins is an easy standalone watch despite being part of a larger series. Inception and Prestige are always fun to rewatch, so you can take in all the little ancillary details. They're all nearly two and a half hours long either way, so it might be a bit exhausting to see them in a gaming world.
It's a busy morning at ChezPokémon. Not only did fans receive word of new "MOBA-like" Pokemon Unite, but the doors are now officially open at Pokémon Cafe Mix, which is available to download on Nintendo Switch and iOS/Android devices.
Revealed during last week's "Pokémon Presents" broadcast, Pokémon Cafe Mix is a fast-moving puzzler which tasks players with mix-and-matching character icons in order to build a menu for your burgeoning business. As the cafe expands in size, popularity, and staff, more and more cuddly critters will pay you a visit to enjoy a nice drink and a Dugtrio sandwich... That's a sandwich shaped like Dugtrio, not a literal "Dugtrio sandwich"... That would be hideous.

Here's a crossover we weren't expecting: Samurai Shodown x For Honor.
The Warden from Ubisoft's melee-focused game For Honor today launches in Japanese fighting game Samurai Shodown as a DLC character.
If For Honor has a Ryu character it's Warden, who in the game is a sort of jack-of-all-trades fighter, powerful, balanced and decent in attack as well as in defense.
This morning, Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokemon Company announced Pokemon Unite, the first "strategic battle game in the series."
Ishihara has partnered with Tencent (presented by its Timi Studio) on the game (uh oh), a partnership that The Pokemon Company seems to be really proud of. Described as a 5v5 team battler, you'll trawl across the map to capture Pokemon (MOBA camps), capture points and take down opponents. As a catch-up mechanic, points scored in the last two minutes are "double" (I'm sure MOBA players will "love" that!). Pokemon seen in the playthrough stream (which evolve from their base forms) include Charizard, Snorlax, Pikachu, Lucario, Clefable, Venusaur, Gengar, Blastoise, Talonflame and Machamp. Creatures will seemingly have ultimates/heroics, called "Unite Moves."
Naturally, because Tencent is involved, it'll be a "free-to-start game," launching on mobile devices (Android/iOS) and Switch with cross-play. Given the last bit of the presentation, there might be an effort to make this into an esport? It'll likely be a long road, but it has a large country's GDP of cash behind it. "More information will come later" as to when it'll actually launch.
I had been out of the Lego scene for a while by the time my daughter started playing with the stuff. In the sets she opened there was often this odd thing that put me in mind of a ski, or maybe even a ski slope. It didn't seem to be part of the main design. It looked more like a tool, albeit one whose purpose struck me as being slightly alien. My daughter knew what it is, and, actually, it is a tool. It's the Lego Brick Separator.
As far as I can understand the Separator goes back in lineage to 1987, which is about the time I stopped playing with Lego. The tool is a beautiful thing, often orange or teal, a slope with a few funny bits at the wide end. This tool has three main purposes, I gather: a wedge for separating bricks from base plates, a lever for applying pressure up or down to pull bricks away, and a sort of pokey bit for removing wheels from axels.
I love it because it feels so useful - it has an aura of deep utility to it. And I also love it because it acknowledges the sort of shadow world of Lego, that you build with it, sure, but you also have to take it apart. When I was a kid, the main Lego brick Separator was either fingernails or teeth. This one feels much safer. It's also fun to just carry around in a pocket with all your other junk and maybe feel like you're a bit more prepared for the world.
Sales are now closed on Humble Bundle's Fight for Racial Justice Bundle, which offered a selection of more than 50 titles for a minimum of $30. In one week, the bundle succeeded in raising an incredible $4 million USD, to be distributed among appropriate charities.
The Humble Fight for Racial Justice Bundle included games Hyper Light Drifter, NBA 2K20, Observer, Neo Cab, Baba is You, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed, System Shock 2 and Super Time Force Ultra, among others. Also featured were a range of e-books, including Black Women in Science, RESIST!, Six Days in Cincinnati, Twelve Years a Slave, Yo Miss, and Black History in Its Own Words.
In just seven days, total sales of the bundle passed 130,000. All of the proceeds raised are to be split between three racial justice charities: The NAACP Legal Defense Fund; educational and analytical organisation Race Forward; and The Bail Project.
The Humble Fight for Racial Justice Bundle is one of many video game-driven initiatives inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. Just last week, publisher itch.io announced that its own Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality - offering over 1,000 items for a minimum of just five dollars - had raised a staggering $8.1 million USD in total donations,
WARNING: this article will SPOIL PLOT DETAILS for The Last of Us Part II. If you don't want the plot spoiled, turn away now.
The Last of Us Part II is out now on PS4, and players are finally able to discover what happened to Joel and Ellie following the ending of the first game. Players who have finished the game will know that it's much longer than the first, running about 25 hours, but it turns out that a lot of content was cut during production.
In an interview with IndieWire, the game's director Neil Druckmann and narrative lead Halley Gross, who wrote The Last of Us Part II together, cover many details about the game's plot and characters--including some details about what was cut.
This new playlist update contains two changes. First, uncommon and rare burst-fire versions of the M4 assault rifle have been removed from loot caches in Warzone. Developer Infinity Ward did not provide any commentary around why the weapons have been removed.
A quick playlist update is now live across all platforms to adjust the following: • Removing uncommon and rare burst fire versions of the M4 assault rifle in #Warzone loot • Allowing parties into the All or Nothing playlist in #ModernWarfare
Second, Modern Warfare's new All or Nothing playlist now supports parties whereas previously it did not. These playlist changes are available now across PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Like other playlist updates, this one should download in a flash from the game's title screen.
Microsoft's next Xbox Series X event is poised to be the biggest and most exciting one yet. During the company's July Xbox 20/20 event, Microsoft will showcase a series of first-party Xbox Series X games, including Halo Infinite. The company may also use the show to reveal the long-rumored all-digital next-generation Xbox. We don't know what to expect for sure yet, but Microsoft has now provided a small update on how planning for the event is coming along.
Xbox marketing director Aaron Greenberg--who heads up planning for these events--said on Twitter that Microsoft conducted an internal review of the event just this week with Phil Spencer. The team at Microsoft is "working hard on it," but Greenberg said the company isn't ready just yet to announce more details, like a date or a rundown of what will be shown off during the program.
"Team working hard on it," Greenberg said to a fan on Twitter who asked for an update. "Good content review today in fact with the big boss. We will share more details when all is locked. Kindly ask for patience in the meantime."
As it turns out, players were able to achieve this goal very fast. The Pokemon Japan Twitter account has announced that players have not only hit that number, but eclipsed it--the Max Raid has seen 1,435,283 victories. This counts each individual player within a team that has successfully completed it.
Radio the Universe has debuted a first trailer ahead of its intended Winter 2020 release, and it looks fantastic. The trailer shows off the game's style, rendered in the Pixel 2.0 engine, as well as the action-packed shooter gameplay we can expect later this year.
According to the game's Steam page, it will offer a "slow-paced challenge" and the ability to adopt either a simple of complex playstyle. It will also feature ambient and musical soundtrack compositions, and a minimalist artstyle.
The game will mix exploration and combat, as seen in the video below.
It has been four years since the initial release of Dead by Daylight, the popular asymmetrical 4v1 multiplayer game that pits four regular people against a player-controlled monster, and developer Behaviour Interactive is celebrating with a new event.
The event, detailed in the video below and on the game's website, will include numerous unique cosmetic unlocks and a few neat aesthetic changes to the game. It will run from now until July 7, and the game's levels will be filled with balloons, confetti, and unique hooks, generators, and lockers.
Also notable is the Anniversary Crown, which will be added as a collectible in each level. The first survivor (or monster) who stumbles upon the crown and interacts with it will glow for the rest of the match, and if they make it through the round alive (or succeed at killing everyone) they will unlock it as a permanent cosmetic for any of the game's original group of survivors.
Ultracore is now available, marking the end of a journey that has been stalled since 1994. The game, previously known as Hardcore, was cancelled by Psygnosis when it was most of the way complete. It was due to release for the Amiga, Sega Genesis, and Sega CD, but the near-finished game was cancelled by its publisher due to the impending launch of the PlayStation, and the assumption that a game that wasn't 32-bit would not sell.
Hardcore was to be one of the earliest releases of Digital Illusions, now known as DICE, the developer of the Battlefield franchise. Now, 26 years later, the game has finally debuted for two modern systems.
We've played through the game's first stage for some quick impressions, and it's fair to say that the game is an unapologetically old-school experience. Don't expect a modern remake or update--this is very much the game as it was intended to be released in the early 90s. That's not to say that it has aged poorly, though, as the game's run-and-gun action is very enjoyable. Having to enter codes to level select is slightly less of a pain on a console with a screenshot function, too.
The first game is the inevitable new mainline chapter of the series, Earth Defense Force 6.
At the moment, no platforms have been announced, but we do get the first screenshots and the mention that it’s coming in 2021.
The game is a direct sequel of Earth Defense Force 5, set in a grim future in which only 10% of the human population is left as a result of the last war.
Tired of drinking Red Bull when you need to conquer your fellow players in online gaming sessions or, if you’re a college student, need to pull an all-nighter to study for a big exam the next morning? SEGA is offering up a new power-up option, as they have partnered with G Fuel to create a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog energy drink appropriately named Sonic’s Peach Rings.
G Fuel formulated the Blue Blur’s new energy drink to give it the flavor of the Peach Rings gummy candy.
The drinks will also come in powdered form in 40-serving tubs and in collector’s boxes that include the serving cups.
The Epic Games Store has hit a significant monthly user figure, the company has announced, following a promotion where several major games were given to users for free. Epic has announced that the store has hit a peak of 61 million monthly users for the service.
In a press release, general manager Steve Allison said that the promotion was a huge success. "The results have exceeded our expectations," he said. "In 2020, we’ve been growing at a historic rate." He also said that the peak concurrent user record for the store is now 13 million.
Today Anchor announced via press release the full schedule of the upcoming Muv-Luv Expo, which will go live on July 1.
As mentioned with the previous announcement, the Muv-Luv Expo is a livestreamed event dedicated to the popular franchise, but this time around it’s mainly for the western audience, replacing the developers’ participation at Anime Expo, which won’t happen in physical form this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The schedule includes news on upcoming games, the broadcast of the full Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse anime with commentary by creator Kouki Yoshimune, mini-concerts, a Q&A panel, and more.
You can watch it here starting at 6:00 pm PDT on July 1.
Below you can read the full lineup and take a look at the event’s illustration featuring the new mascot characters Cherno-chan and Lux-tan, who are the waifu versions of a Su-37 Terminator and of a Laser-Class BETA.
While definitely not the biggest surprise of last week's Pokemon Presents livestream, the announcement of Pokemon Cafe Mix was an unexpected addition. The free-to-play puzzle game was announced for both Switch and mobile devices, but the most surprising part was the release date: it's available to play now on Switch, iOS, and Android.
The puzzle game revolves around a cafe where Pokemon visit, and to serve your customers you need to clear rows of Pokemon icons by dragging like types together. Finishing puzzles will increase your friendship rating with Pokemon, leading to cafe upgrades and new customers. If you're playing on Switch, the game must be played in handheld mode with the touch screen.
The same livestream that debuted Cafe Mix also announced a new Pokemon Snap, a toothbrushing app called Pokemon Smile to encourage good dental hygiene habits, and in-game events for Pokemon Sword and Shield and Pokemon Go. It also coincided with the release of the Isle of Armor, the first expansion DLC for Sword and Shield.
Fighting game player Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzalez has been dropped from storied esports organization Evil Geniuses over racist comments he made on Facebook in 2017.
Guilty Gear Strive has debuted new gameplay footage during the digital New Game Plus expo, showcasing Millia and Zato as they go head-to-head with one another.
Activision has announced eight more skaters that will be featured in the upcoming Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 remaster package coming in September.
The eight skaters include: Lizzie Armanto, Leo Baker, Leticia Bufoni, Riley Hawk, Nyjah Huston, Tyshawn Jones, Aori Nishimura, and Shane O'Neill. They join the previously announced roster of skaters from the 1999 and 2000 original games.
Some of the newly announced skaters were featured in previous Pro Skater games, such as Hawk's son Riley, but this is the first time they're appearing as playable skaters in the first two games.
Shawn Layden, the former boss of PlayStation, has weighed in with his thoughts on the state of the AAA games business, and he thinks it's unsustainable. Speaking at the Gamelab Live conference, as reported by GI.biz, Layden said the commonly held idea that the cost of game development will double every new generation cannot continue.
"The problem with that model is it's just not sustainable," he said.
Layden recalled the days when the world's biggest video games were developed on budgets of around $1 million. Now, the cost of most AAA games is between $80 million and $150 million, he said, and that's before marketing expenses are factored in.
EA Sports has released a "deep dive" video for Madden NFL 21, showcasing some of the new features coming to this year's professional football game.
In the video, EA speaks about a number of updates, including a new system that gives pass-rushers more control off the line. As you can see in the video, players will have more options and control to help bring down the quarterback. Another new feature is more skill stick controls for ball carriers. Specifically, two new animations have been added--the side hurdle and the dead leg. These can be combined together to help you play with flair and creativity.
