Bloodstained: Curse Of The Moon 2 continues the 8-bit Castlevania platforming

3 years 10 months ago

The makers of Bloodstained today announced their old school Castlevania-style adventures will continue with Bloodstained: Curse Of The Moon 2. This is the follow-up to a small game they made as stretch goal for the Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night crowdfunding campaign. Where Ritual was all about Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night vibes, Curse called back to Castlevania’s early 8-bit days. I’ve heard good things, and evidently it’s popular enough for ArtPlay to make a sequel to a spin-off.

3 years 10 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

While gamers continue to hold their collective breath for the first full Nintendo Direct of the year (what a sad sentence), fans of the house that Mario built have been satiated with smaller looks into games such as Animal Crossing, Paper Mario: The Origami King, and more recently Pokémon.

That trend continues as Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, ended last week's Pokémon Presents digital event saying they were set to announce another secret project on June 24.

Will we see the return of Johto in the vein of the Let's Go games, or will Game Freak surprise us with something completely different? Join Ben Reeves, Dan Tack, and me as we react with you in chat and witness what's next for the world of Pokémon.

We went live earlier, but you can catch the full archive of the stream above! And remember to subscribe on YouTubeTwitchMixerTwitter, and Facebook to get notified when we go live.

Go Battle League Will Return Today in Pokemon Go

3 years 10 months ago

After what seemed like an eternity, but was actually close to 10 days, Go Battle League Season two will finally return to Pokemon GO. A few days ago it was shut down thanks to an exploit discovered (and used) by trainer JesusG1310. This glitch let him get more energy for charged attacks during his opponent’s charge attacks.

Along with the announcement that the GO Battle League will return today, Niantic also released some information on how they’ll make up the downtime to Pokemon GO players.

The first one will let you participate in six sets of battles each day for the remainder of season two. That means you’ll be able to do a total of 30 battles per day instead of the standard 25.

Also, the GO Battle League leaderboard will be temporarily disabled for the foreseeable future. This will stop cheating players from seeing how fast they’re climbing the ranks and may make it easier for Niantic to identify players who may be cheating.

Finally, there will also be two parts of what Niantic is calling boosted GO Battle League rewards running from June 23 at 1 PM PT until June 30 1 PM PT. The first one will completely remove Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott from the encounter reward pool.

Many trainers have expressed their disinterest in the Unova starters as rewards since they’re easily obtainable in the wild. The second part of the boosted rewards moves the Rare Candy rewards in the Premium track from fifth to fourth. This should make it slightly easier to earn Rare Candies in the GO Battle League.

This part doesn’t seem to be changed, but you can check out the most recent schedule update for GO Battle League Season two below for a little refresher (All times are 1 PM PT).

Pokémon: The Isle of Armor Review

3 years 10 months ago

While it may be surprising to see DLC in a Pokémon game for the first time, Sword and Shield’s Expansion Pass is definitely preferable to its traditional model of following up the latest game with another full-price version just to deliver some new content and a few improvements. The Isle of Armor, the Expansion Pass’s first of two bundled DLC additions, provides an entertaining reason to revisit the Galar region with over 100 returning Pokemon (plus a few new ones) and an enjoyable new Wild Area. But this island getaway is otherwise pretty bare bones and disappointingly brief.

Like the free-roaming Wild Area in the main Sword and Shield campaign, The Isle of Armor’s is complete with an excess of untamed Pokémon wandering around, dozens of dens for Max Raid Battles, and plenty of items to find and collect. Without the usual Gym structure (or even linear Routes), this DLC’s main quest line instead has you running missions throughout its open space – it’s much more freeform than the usual Pokémon experience, which feels like a natural and not unwelcome progression after the first Wild Area showed how well an “open world” Pokémon could potentially work, even if the story here is too fleeting to really savor it.

Min Min’s Addition Changes Everything for Future Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC

3 years 10 months ago

Just yesterday, the identity of the mysterious ARMS character coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was finally revealed. Min Min joined the roster in an incredible fashion, quite literally beating her fellow ARMS cast members to the punch and snagging the invite for herself.

But Min Min’s reveal means a lot more than it seems like at first glance – she’s opened the door for a bevy of other popular characters to get a chance to go toe-to-toe with gaming’s greatest as well.

You see, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has, since launch, included a wide variety of Spirits – collectible images of characters from across a wide swath of gaming history.

But while some saw another way to honor gaming history, others saw a death knell – surely no character featured as a Spirit would also be a character.

For a long time, that assumption held true – no character already featured as a Spirit ended up being a playable character in the base game of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

When the same held true for the first Fighters Pass of Joker, Hero, Banjo-Kazooie, Terry, and Byleth, none of whom had been Spirits, it seemed all but confirmed, and made Spirit Events like the Resident Evil one feel more like cullings than content.

No More Heroes 3 Gameplay Reveal Hidden by Suda 51's Head

3 years 10 months ago
No More Heroes 3 is scheduled to be released sometime in 2020 and today series director Goichi ‘Suda51’ Suda shared the first gameplay footage for the upcoming game. Sort of. It was mostly covered by his head. The New Game Plus Expo premiered this morning, showcasing some upcoming games from primarily Japanese developers. Suda was the first presenter during the Expo and set the stage for a new No More Heroes 3 reveal. Instead, he began speaking about the Switch games he planned on playing during social isolation. Meanwhile, in the background, a video of No More Heroes 3 gameplay was shown. Most of it was obscured by Suda as he continued to not say anything about the anticipated sequel. You can watch the obscured gameplay here. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/13/no-more-heroes-3-the-return-trailer"] Suda is known for his eccentric game reveals and blocking a first-look at his upcoming game is certainly one way to play a prank on viewers. No More Heroes 3 didn’t reappear during the stream, so the opening moments blocked by Suda’s head are the only glimpse viewers got of new footage. While a lot of it was blocked off, you can make out some portions of the gameplay. It showed protagonist Travis Touchdown fighting some kind of robot enemy, potentially a boss given what looks to be a health bar for the enemy. But it’s hard to say for sure. Other reveals from today’s New Game Plus Expo included a Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 announcement. The last No More Heroes game was the spinoff Travis Strikes Again released for the Nintendo Switch. The ending of that game included a small teaser for No More Heroes 3. Trails Of Cold Steel 4 Pre-Order Guide: Release Date, Limited Edition, And Where To Buy

3 years 10 months ago

The next game in the Trails of Cold Steel saga is set to release in just a few months, and it will bring the popular JRPG sub-series to a close. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV will launch worldwide for PlayStation 4 on October 27, 2020, with Nintendo Switch and PC ports planned for 2021. The Cold Steel arc, which is part of the Trails series and The Legend of Heroes franchise, kicked off in 2015 (in the US) with the release of Trails of Cold Steel on PS3 and PS Vita, so Trails of Cold Steel IV will give fans a finale that's been five years in the making. If you can't wait to get your hands on the game, pre-orders for Trails of Cold Steel IV are live now, and there are a couple of editions with various pricing to consider.

Trails of Cold Steel IV's story picks up two weeks after the battle at the end of Trails of Cold Steel III, as Juna, Kurt, and Altina awaken to realize Rean has been captured by Chancellor Osborne. Now led by Juna, Class VI sets off to rescue Rean and put an end to Osborne's plans, which will bring about the end of the world, once and for all. The turn-based gameplay remains the same, although Trails of Cold Steel IV introduces new S-Craft techniques as well as powerful Lost Arts for each character in combat. The game also boasts the largest roster in the series' history, with returning characters from the Trails in the Sky trilogy and the Crossbell arc.

First No More Heroes 3 Gameplay (Kind Of, Sort Of) Revealed During New Game Plus Expo

3 years 10 months ago

During the New Game+ Expo livestream, game director Goichi "Suda51" Suda showed off some brand-new gameplay footage of the Nintendo Switch exclusive No More Heroes 3. Unfortunately, getting a good look at the never-before-seen gameplay was a challenge, as Suda obscured the entire sequence.

While discussing the power of video games as an entertainment medium before getting to the NGPX announcements, the screen behind Suda began playing some No More Heroes 3 gameplay. It's difficult to parse what was on screen, with Suda sitting directly in front of the player's field of vision. We do see protagonist Travis Touchdown battling a boss, some sort of luminescent robot capable of controlling dimensions. Never once during the approximate two minutes of footage does Suda mention the No More Heroes 3 gameplay going on behind him.

You can check it out below, where Suda also admits that Super Mario Odyssey is still on his backlog.

Call Of The Sea Is Subtle In How It Uses Next-Gen Power

3 years 10 months ago

Revealed during the May Xbox 20/20 showcase of upcoming Xbox Series X games, Call of the Sea is the debut title from Out of the Blue Games. When developing Call of the Sea, Out of the Blue Games co-founder Tatiana Delgado said that the team wanted to specifically "target the next gen" and designed the game to take advantage of the tech afforded by consoles like the Xbox Series X.

"We wanted to target the next gen," Delgado told USgamer. "As soon as we saw what was possible, we wanted to do it because although we have a stylized, visual style, so it's not realistic but we wanted to get as much as possible from the graphics side. And I think we can benefit a lot from the next-gen and, we're kind of different for what you would expect from a next-gen game."

Delgado added that Call of the Sea takes advantage of next-gen tech in subtle ways that players may not immediately notice--the sheer amount of assets the game manages to fit on-screen at a time, for instance, or the many layers to the lighting. These aren't features that many players are typically looking at when watching trailers for next-gen games, but they do represent an aspect of the technological jump between console generations.
