Oculus Discontinues Go Headset, Commits To A More Open Oculus Quest Ecosystem

3 years 10 months ago

The Oculus Quest is one of the best VR headsets you can buy today, and it's clearly driving many of the decisions around how Oculus thinks about its products--both hardware and software--and their future. Which explains why today the company is discontinuing its other portable headset, while laying out plans for a more open ecosystem for the Quest.

The Oculus Go was the first of Oculus' attempts at an all-in-one VR headset, primarily aimed at a market that was being dominated by headsets that required you to use your smartphone as the screen. The Oculus Go put all of that hardware into the headset itself, but also omitted features that made it more suitable for more passive VR experiences, as opposed to those you can find on the Oculus Quest.

It wasn't a hit like the Quest, and today Oculus is discontinuing production on the Oculus Go. Oculus has ceased production on the headset, and will shut down new app submissions this December. After-sales support will continue through 2022, with security updates ceasing after that.

Rogue Legacy 2 Hits Steam and Epic Early Access in July

3 years 10 months ago

Rogue Legacy 2 is launching in early access for both Steam and Epic Games Store on PC on July 23, developer Cellar Door Games announced today.

The studio previously announced the roguelike sequel was in development last April,  but the title had already been in development for more than two years, according to the Steam store page.

The developer noted that the game currently has “many of its systems in place” and the time in early access is needed to create more content. The early access launch will contain two biomes, more than 700 random rooms, four complete character classes, 35 traits, and more.

The game will cost $19.99 at early access launch, but is planned to raise in price two times. It will be raised to $24.99 when it is halfway through early access development, and then the final price will be $29.99 when it officially launches from early access.

Cellar Door Games provided a broad roadmap for early access development with major updates approximately every two months, minor updates in-between, and bug fixes.

Rogue Legacy 2 is expected to fully launch “approximately one year after the Early Access release, sometime in 2021,” but the developer notes that is not a guarantee.

Rogue Legacy 2 is entering early access on PC in July

3 years 10 months ago

Rogue Legacy 2, the sequel to Cellar Door Games' superb Castlevania-esque rogue-lite exploratory platformer, is coming to Steam and Epic Games Store early access on 23rd July.

The original Rogue Legacy launched to immediate acclaim in 2013, thanks to its compelling procedurally generated action-platforming that saw every new play-through undertaken by a previous hero's heir - with each new generation possessing a fresh mix of classes, abilities, and traits that could dramatically affect subsequent runs.

New heroes might, for instance, become tiny in stature or super strong, while clumsy heroes would destroy all breakable objects they touched, heroes with vertigo would find the game world flipped on its head, heroes with Peripheral Arterial Disease could pass through spike traps without triggering them, and so on. All this variety, combined with an extensive upgrade loop, made for a wonderfully re-playable experience.

Valorant Patch 1.02 Notes Reveal Competitive Ranked Mode, Buffs, Fixes, & More

3 years 10 months ago

Valorant’s next patch is about to add its anticipated ranked mode; following yesterday’s developer update from the team at Riot, the full list of patch notes has now been revealed. In addition to Competitive mode, Patch 1.02 is set to make changes to hero abilities, tweak several areas of all maps, boost performance, and add quality of life improvements.

Unfortunately, there’s no release date yet, but we expect Patch 1.02 to launch later this week.

Here’s a summary of what you need to know:

Tagging – the slowing effect you feel when hit by bullets, has been adjusted, in part to up your chances of escape if you’re near cover. We can’t help you much if you’re dancing in the open.

Agent Updates– Viper, Reyna, and Jett have all been buffed slightly, while fixes to some of Cypher’s have been issued.

VIPER

Toxic Screen now burns through walls, placing emitters at all valid locations (e.g., the ground) over its length

“Viper Toxic screen is a potentially-strong vision slicing tool, but its access was well…terrible, making it only useful in a few spots on most maps. This should allow Viper to cut up sights, maps, and other unique areas to either fake or help take ground.”

Torchlight 3 Early Access Review

3 years 10 months ago

There’s nothing desperately wrong with Torchlight 3, which just came out in Early Access form a week ago. It’s a flashy, bombastic, nicely-paced action-RPG with tons of enemies to slash, blast, and explode for the tasty loot inside. The problem is that it doesn’t really do much to effectively set itself above or apart from the embarrassment of riches we have to pick from in this genre right now. When I could be playing Diablo 3 or Wolcen (now that it's been patched a bit) or Path of Exile or even one of the older Torchlight games, I keep looking for a reason why I’d choose Torchlight 3… and so far, the early access version hasn’t really given me one.

Torchlight 3 doesn’t put its best foot forward as it tries to introduce us to a story premise that isn’t really trying to be anything more than ultra generic fantasy. Something about an ancient evil reawakening, blah blah blah... It’s not like previous Torchlight games were heavy on story either, but Torchlight 3 doesn’t even seem to be trying. Every NPC seems to be defined by a single personality archetype. You’ve got goofy goblins that lean on the comedy crutches of over-the-top voice acting and Saturday morning cartoon hijinks. It’s got a certain charm to it, but it’s all so painfully familiar, like your slacker roommate’s first attempt at running a Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

Skate Sequel Will Potentially Focus on User-Generated Content

3 years 10 months ago
After many years worth of comments from fans asking “where’s Skate 4?” EA has announced a follow-up to its venerated skateboard sim franchise. But according to EA CEO Andrew Wilson the decision to bring back Skate wasn’t just because of the comment alone, but also because EA sees an opportunity to integrate modern trends like “user-generated content.” During a fireside chat with investors on Monday, Wilson spoke about the surprise Skate announcement during the EA Play Live event last week. He revealed that the announcement broke EA’s Twitter engagement record, showcasing the enthusiasm from fans for a new Skate game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/19/untitled-skate-game-announcement-trailer-ea-play-2020"] “You take a game like Skate, and while skateboarding in and of itself has tremendous appeal to a huge, global audience, there’s another secular trend that’s happening inside our industry around user-generated content, open-world, and interaction,” Wilson said. Wilson shared a story about skateboarder Nyjah Huston who started as a skateboarder but now has a brand that includes fashion and art. “So for many people, you think about skating as a starting point that has appeal, but you start to build in user-generated content, exploration, and community on top of that and that expands the opportunity exponentially.” While the new Skate is still “very early” in development, Wilson’s comments highlight some potential directions for the new Skate title. Players can likely expect customization options and possibly a chance to fill the open-world with user-generated content. EA didn’t release a trailer for the new Skate, instead, EA presented series producers Deran Chung and Chris ‘Cuz’ Parry to announce that development has started.

Ghost of Tsushima Devs Explains Samurai Cinema and Sword Fighting Influences; New Video Shows Stance-Switching

3 years 10 months ago

The upcoming PS4 exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, is all about feudal Japan and it takes lots of inspiration from classic and modern samurai movies to make sure that the game can truly capture the essence of a samurai fantasy, which is something that Chris Zimmerman, Co-Founder of Sucker Punch, elaborate on in this official PS Blog post.

According to Zimmerman, the goal for Ghost of Tsushima has always been to emulate the feel of those incredible samurai movies that are so beloved:

Our goal with Ghost of Tsushima has always been to capture the heart of the samurai fantasy — to transport you back to feudal Japan, to live through the beauty and danger of Tsushima Island under attack. Our hero, Jin Sakai, has trained his whole life in the samurai way — watchful, precise, disciplined, deadly. He’s a master of the katana, a confident horseman, and skilled with the bow… but those skills aren’t enough when faced with thousands of Mongol invaders. He needs to be something more than the perfect samurai if he wants to save his home. That’s what Ghost is about.

When it comes to the samurai sword fighting gameplay in Ghost of Tsushima, the team decided on focusing on three very important aspects: speed, sharpness, and precision.

The team wants the combat to feel fast but also feel believable. Those moments in samurai movies seem cool but the moves are telegraphed and choreography has been taught. But in Tsushima, the enemy attack motions will be very realistic and also slightly nerve-wracking for the player to deal with.

Deadly Premonition 2's Le Carre seems pleasant until it seems horrifying

3 years 10 months ago

The Le Carré tourism board does exactly half of a good job selling this quaint little town as a relaxing getaway destination. I was sold right up until "Everyone's as happy as a dead pig in the sunshine." The Casa Pineapple might be enough for me to throw caution to the wind.

The population is about to grow a little bit as Special Agent York comes to town. But, the population will subsequently drop as townsfolk are gruesomely murdered and fed to alligators. That's the circle of life, I guess; York shows up and strange killings overrun the city.

Deadly Premonition 2 is only two weeks out, launching on July 10 on Switch. We're assured some bonkers writing and ridiculous overacting. Apart from that, no one really knows what to expect. It's gonna be a wild ride one way or another.

Everything You Need To Know About Wasteland 3’s Vehicular Combat

3 years 10 months ago

In Wasteland 3, you’ll manage a team of up to six Rangers as they battle for survival while exploring Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. However, the most valuable member of your team might be your car. To help you explore this winter wasteland, your team boards a tank-like truck – called the Kodiak – outfitted with a wild assortment of weapons. This machine is named after the bear, which is fitting because this car can take a lot of damage and is incredibly fearsome in combat. During random encounters, the Kodiak tears through large groups of enemies and is instrumental to your survival. We talked to game director Tim Campbell about what makes this monstrous motor so special.

On the Kodiak’s origin:

“We experimented with a lot of different takes on how the vehicle drives, how it handles, how fast it should it go, and even how many vehicles there should be. There was a lot of sifting through ideas and taking this thread from this idea, and this thread from another idea, and consolidating them all together. One of the things that came out of the team's early prototypes that we built on was the idea of your vehicle coming into combat with you, and having that be a big addition to your Ranger squad.”

Ghost of Tsushima has a 'perfect parry' and attack canceling

3 years 10 months ago

It feels odd to be more excited about the exploring-nature side of Ghost of Tsushima than anything to do with sneaking around or slicing dudes, but that's where I'm at after May's State of Play presentation. Will the combat be challenging, deep, and engaging enough to sustain the whole island adventure?

It's one of those questions that can't be answered pre-release, but here's a bit more to go on.

Today, in a PlayStation Blog post, Sucker Punch shared more details about the game's combat design and intent – including a stance-switching gameplay clip that looks better than prior footage.

There are several choice quotes from Sucker Punch co-founder Chris Zimmerman, too.

Marvel's Avengers: 38 New Details We Learned (and 2 New Mysteries)

3 years 10 months ago
Marvel's Avengers aired its War Table stream today, covering everything from the game's story, its heroes and villains, customisation, the difference between single player and multiplayer missions, and more. Many of those details have been revealed previously (although this is our best public look at them yet), but there were a number of announcements in the stream that we hadn't heard before. Here's the 38 we spotted (and a couple of new questions we have): [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/marvels-avengers-new-story-trailer-modok-reveal"]

Marvel's Avengers Story

  • We've heard previously that new heroes and playable regions would be provided for free, but today's showcase confirmed that new story sections would be added to the game at no cost after launch.
  • In terms of the launch game's story, the showcase revealed a little more about what happens after the disastrous events of A-Day, which ends with San Francisco under quarantine after the release of Terrigen mists, transforming some victims into Inhumans.
  • Those victims include Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM) co-founder George Tarleton.
  • At some point, AIM becomes more powerful, seemingly even taking over the Stark Tower premises.
  • Tarleton begins changing visually, eventually becoming the supervillain known as MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing).
  • Using public anger at The Avengers, who were blamed for A-Day, Tarleton begins imprisoning other Inhumans under the guise of finding a cure for the condition.
  • In fact, he's harvesting their powers for use in the Adaptoid robot army under his control.
  • MODOK's end goal is rid the Earth of superpowered individuals altogether, seemingly including himself.
  • Another Terrigen victim, Kamala Khan (Ms.
