Ni No Kuni Developer Level-5 Allegedly Ends Operations In North America

3 years 7 months ago

According to GamesIndustry.biz sources, Ni no Kuni and Yo-Kai Watch developer Level-5 has been phasing out its North American studios since Summer 2019. The Level-5 International America and Level-5 Abby studios were hit with substantial layoffs last year.

In July 2019, Level-5 International America closed its design department and, earlier this year, Level-5 Abby COO Yukari Hayakawa was said to have stepped down from the company. As of right now, Level-5 has not publicly announced any future North American releases, which begs the question: Have North American operations stopped completely?

Personally, I don't have much experience with Level 5's Yo-Kai Watch series, but the two Ni no Kuni games were heart-warming Studio Ghibli-informed experiences with great characters and solid combat. While nothing has been confirmed, I'm hoping that Level-5 still plans to release their games in the West.

Epic can continue to support Unreal Engine on Mac and iOS for now

3 years 7 months ago

Fortnite's Battle Bus, with players jumping out.

While Epic and Apple’s legal battle over app stores isn’t due in court until next year, one important matter is settled for now: Epic will get the keep the Apple developer accounts which let them update and maintain Unreal Engine on Mac and iOS. Apple had threatened to disable those too, not just the accounts Epic use for Fortnite, until a judge approved Epic’s appeal for a temporary restraining order. That’s now settled for longer thanks to a preliminary injunction issued on Friday. But the judge also held firm in her decision not to force Apple to let Fortnite back on iThings. Everyone’s a winner, everyone’s a loser.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon crashes into RPG territory, but is all the better for it

3 years 7 months ago

Ichiban Kasugo calling in support from the skies mid-battle.

It was when I drank baby milk with a bunch of half-naked yakuza in diapers that I really knew I was back in a Yakuza game. I noted an edge of disbelief in my voice as my laughter echoed across the room. But mixed in with my cackle was genuine warmth, too. It was good to be back.

As a long time fan of Sega’s action adventure beat ‘em up series, I was lucky enough to give Yakuza: Like A Dragon a whirl for a few hours of preview, and it made me grin like a happy baby throughout – like those diaper-wearing yakuza, I suppose. Even if you’re unfamiliar with the series it’ll likely elicit a similar reaction, because you don’t need to be clued in on any previous happenings to enjoy it. Like A Dragon does retain all the best quirks from its past, and builds on them, too. But make no mistake: it isn’t afraid to tear the foundations down and start anew.

Kojima Productions Adds Ludens Figure and White Rubber Ducky to Store

3 years 7 months ago

Kojima Productions has announced a new Figma figure of their Ludens mascot, alongside a white version of the Ludens rubber duck. Yes, like the kind sung about in Sesame Street that goes in bathtubs. Let’s get quackin’ on giving you more information. (Nope, don’t feel even a little shamed for making that joke.)

If you have played Death Stranding you have surely seen the Kojima Productions logo. You know, the one with the weird knight helmet with the skull inside? That’s the one.

The Ludens figure isn’t a brand new figure, but instead redresses the usually white mascot in black. This figure will run you $120. There don’t seem to be any purchase restrictions or stock limitation. If you’re really feeling the look of this one, the white one is certainly also in stock (there is a handy color selector as if you are simply buying a pair of shoes).

Ni No Kuni Developer Level-5 Is Shutting Down In North America-Report

3 years 7 months ago

It looks like Level-5, developer of Yo-Kai Watch and Ni No Kuni, has basically shut down its North American operations, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

According to multiple sources informed on the matter, both Level-5 International America and its subsidiary office Level-5 Abby started shuttering last year, including laying off the majority of each office's staff. The actual numbers on how many folks were impacted and how many remain are still unclear, but sources estimate about ten employees were laid off from Abby and a similar amount were let go from International America.

Though sources say there was no explicit reason given for the layoffs, those connected to Abby reported that employees were given "every indication" that the studio would be shutting down, with a few employees lingering to finish up essential functions while the company wrapped its consolidation between the Japan office and Dentsu, an international branding and advertisement company.

Best Crusader Kings 3 mods

3 years 7 months ago

Six weeks after the release of Crusader Kings 3, and there are already over 1200 mods, tweaks, and more to download. Paradox’s grand soap opera is as much fun to fix as it is to play, it seems.

A lot of the more extensive mods are still heavily in development, so I’ve steered clear of most total conversions (aside from one that I couldn’t not highlight) and stuck to more general upgrades and rules for your kings and queens.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla's settlement explored: your new Viking home

3 years 7 months ago

It's been years since Assassin's Creed gave its heroes a home. For all the hours I spent as Kassandra, her brief stab at a quiet life left an odd taste, and there was nothing cosy about the cold stones of Atlantis. Valhalla's village settlement, however, offers something very different. For new heroine Eivor, it's a growing community of houses and people, shops and services, friends, families, lovers. It is a base for the game's Ancient Britain-set campaign, a hub for travel to distant shores, a graveyard to bury the dead. And while its walls may be built from the same stones as BioWare's Skyhold, it lies on earlier foundations set down by Connor's Homestead and Ezio's beloved Monteriggioni.

"It's really tricky to show the settlement as it's the core of the game," David Bolle tells me. He's a level designer at Ubisoft Montreal, and has worked on Eivor's Ravensthorpe from the project's start. "It is the centrepiece - everything folds back into here, including a lot of narrative and big story turning points." Over the course of an hour-long presentation, I don't see these story spoilers. But I do get to watch Ravensthorpe grow in fast-forward, as Bolle zips through its evolution, tents turning into timber frame buildings, a cluster of houses in a forest clearing into a bustling little community.

How Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Settlement Pulls You Into Everyday Viking Life

3 years 7 months ago

Ahead of Assassin's Creed Valhalla's release, I had the opportunity to check out how settlement building will work in the game. Though Ubisoft has described the establishment of a new home for Eivor's people as a major motivation for the character, there's been little shown about this aspect of Valhalla so far. I was a bit surprised to see just how much the settlement factors into Valhalla's gameplay loop, serving as a place you'll regularly visit and invest in throughout the campaign. It feels like an improvement to how home bases have worked in Assassin's Creed in the past, largely for how it pulls you into Eivor's life beyond their mission.

"It was really important when we designed [the settlement] that it felt exactly like when you come back home after a long journey away--you work in some other places, other regions, other countries, and you come back to your family and some element has changed," explained David Bolle, level designer on the settlement feature.

In a video presentation, Bolle showed me how Eivor's settlement evolves over the course of the game. Some of the changes are caused by you; for example, spending resources to build shops will, in turn, welcome settlers to set up camp in the area and join your community. Other times, the changes happen without you. For instance, you may return after a lengthy campaign mission only to find some traders have set up shop or that some of the people have elected to improve the architecture of certain structures and make the place feel more like a permanent residence for its people.

Amazon Games Pulls The Plug On Crucible

3 years 7 months ago

Amazon Games is shutting down Crucible's servers on November 9. The free-to-play hero shooter has been out for a little under 6 months. Despite its three, vastly different multiplayer modes and extensive cast, Crucible had difficulties finding success as well as a large-scale, dedicated playerbase. Amazon Games promises that players who have purchased Crucible microtransactions will, ultimately, be refunded.

We enjoyed Crucible's moment-to-moment engagements for the most part, but felt that many of its highlights weren't very memorable. Amazon Games' Crucible was slated to be a substantial first foray into game development. With this sudden cancellation, it's hard to speculate what Amazon Games' plans are for the future.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Teaser Shows Off A New Costume For New York's Newest Hero

3 years 7 months ago

Marvel's Spider-Man developer Insomniac has uploaded a new teaser for its upcoming PS4 and PS5 game Miles Morales: Spider-Man. In the sneak peek, which highlights sections from the game's in-universe newspaper The Daily Bugle, Miles has already made a public appearance as the latest Spider-Man, although his first few outings have shown off his inexperience.

"When Spidey's partner first descended, the new Wall-Crawler's webs were messy, his one-liners were cheesy, and his swinging wasn't that graceful," the one entry reads. "Since then, he's been seen training on rooftops and in alleys all across town with his mentor."

That line and a quick teaser video suggest that the original Spider-Man will still have a large part to play in Miles' crime-fighting career. The video also showed off an alternative costume for Miles, in which his trademark black spider-suit is covered up by a hoodie and baggy shorts, similar to the outfit he wore in the animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The Ori developer's next game will be Zelda-like

3 years 7 months ago

The first time was the charm and the second time was also the charm, so there's no need to go back to the well a third time. At least not yet.

Moon Studios, who's best-known for Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps, isn't doing the 2D metroidvania thing again for its third game. Late last year, we learned through a job listing that Moon's next game will be a next-gen 3D action RPG that's inspired by the likes of Zelda and Diablo. Now, the developer is starting to talk about it just a little bit.

In an interview with The GamerOri lead artist Daniel van Leeuwen says "The new project we're working on is a very different project to what Ori is. So for sure we'll be able to use a lot of things that we weren't able to use in Ori, just because it's a 3D environment. And we're aiming for a few years out so yes, we are looking at a lot of these next-gen techniques."

He continued "I think at Moon we just want to make something that stands out from the crowd, to really drive a strong artistic feeling, and for that we'll have to utilize a lot of techniques that we haven’t before."

Genshin Impact’s Next Region Will Arrive in December

3 years 7 months ago
Developer MiHoYo will add a new region to Genshin Impact in December. This will be the second of three planned updates, with the roadmap planning an update every six weeks. Announced on the official Genshin Impact blog, MiHoYo revealed that the game's third region, Dragonspire, will be added in late December, with an estimated arrival date of December 23. Dragonspire will be accompanied by a "related event". Before that, Version 1.1 will add the Unreconciled Stars event, and is expected to arrive on November 11. Following both of these is Version 1.3, which will arrive in February 2021 and add the Lantern Rite event. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/28/genshin-impact-launch-trailer"] "In future versions, we will combine the unique cultural and calendarial features of in-game regions with dates in the real world to host unique events in Mondstadt and Liyue," explained MiHoYo. Ludi Harpastum and the Windbloom Festival will take place in the game's first region, Mondstadt, while Lantern Rite and the Moonchase Festival will take place in the second region, Liyue. No details have yet to be provided as to what in-game activities will be available during these festivals. Alongside this six-week-interval roadmap, MiHoYo has also stated that it has intentions for new Genshin Impact characters and a next-generation console version. Genshin Impact has been a huge success, with Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad noting that the Chinese RPG has made over $100m in under two weeks, which he believes makes it the most successful Chinese original IP.

The Outer Worlds 2 Rumored To Be In The Works

3 years 7 months ago

The Outer Worlds 2 looks to be in development, at least according to a recent rumor by industry insider Daniel Ahmad. With the Peril on Gorgon DLC out now for players to enjoy, this Fallout New Vegas 2 in space take could have an even brighter future ahead.

On the cusp of the announcement that The Outer Worlds will be launching on Steam soon, Ahmad took to social media to share that "a new entry in the franchise is being explored, currently in pre-production."

It's important to note that there are many games in the ideation stage, and not all of them make it off of the cutting room floor. While intriguing to see that Obsidian is reportedly looking into more Outer Worlds, a lot can change during the pre-production phase.

PUBG's "first dynamic map" arrives in Season 9

3 years 7 months ago

I can't really keep track of all the battle royale seasons at this point, but in any case, we're now at Season 9 for PUBG - and you can expect some real fireworks in this one as it introduces volcanic map Paramo.

Paramo is described by PUBG Corp as the game's "first dynamic map", and the latest teaser trailer finally gives us an extended look at its landscapes, although exactly what dynamic means is still up for debate. Some speculate the map will be procedurally generated for each match, which makes sense in the context of the trailer and PUBG Corp's description of a "dynamic landscape [that] will keep you guessing each drop". Others think it may be closer to Karakin's Black Zones, which flatten everything in their path - including buildings. A slightly wackier theory, as explained by PlayerIGN, predicts Paramo's hook is actually time travel. Either way, it's volcanic and dynamic.

PUBG Corp started teasing the map in late September by sending a bunch of stone tablets to influencers, and later followed up with a lore video hinting Paramo is actually the location of the fountain of youth. There have also been several hints pertaining to helicopters being added in the new season, in both a letter accompanying the tablets, a dev tweet and several teaser videos, so it seems likely the vehicles could be introduced as part of Season 9.
