A Fan Has Remade Super Mario Sunshine’s Delfino Plaza in THPS 1 + 2 Remake

3 years 7 months ago
A talented park editor has recreated Super Mario Sunshine's Delfino Plaza in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. Reddit user Gunderstank16 has gone to great lengths to envision the paint-soaked, waterlogged hub of Super Mario Sunshine in the most recent remake of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, which features a fleshed-out set of map creation tools as part of the Create a Park system. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/13/tony-hawks-pro-skater-12-create-a-park-delfino-plaza-gameplay"] You can check out a video of the map in action above, where the map's creator skates it dressed as Mario, complete with complimentary red grip tape on his skateboard. The map has all of the famous architecture from the Gamecube Mario game, including the gigantic Shine plinth that frames the plaza and the many palm trees by the water's edge. In absence of the FLUDD, there are many rails placed to ensure that your chosen skater can get around and preserve their lines. "Been playing a lot of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 and Super Mario 3D All Stars back to back," said Gunderstank16 in the description of his video on YouTube. "Figured I'd mess around in the editor for awhile and see if I could actually remake Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/29/tony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-accolades-trailer"] Gunderstank16 is also responsible for a killer rendition of Bob-Omb Battlefield from Super Mario 64, which is similarly detailed and skate-ready.

New sequel Reigns: Beyond takes animated strategy action intergalactic

3 years 7 months ago

Devolver Digital has released a wacky teaser trailer for a brand new entry in strategy gaming series Reigns. Reigns: Beyond, once again developed by indie outfit Nerial, is currently in the works for release on Apple Arcade.

The excitable trailer does not feature any gameplay footage, but does see the series eschew its usual medieval aesthetic for a sci-fi setting. According to the blurb, Reigns: Beyond will see players take charge of an intergalactic rock band, managing their resources, equipment, and band-mates as they travel from gig to gig across the Milky Way and beyond.

Reigns: Beyond will include over 60 quirky characters, a whopping 1400 decision cards, and a stellar soundtrack composed by Grindstone's Sam Webster. No release date was announced but interested space rockers can pre-order the game over on the App Store.

These are the best Amazon Prime Day gaming laptop deals under £1000

3 years 7 months ago

A photo of the HP Pavilion 15A photo of the Asus TUF Gaming FX505 gaming laptop

[cms-block] on Razer’s fancy Blade 15 laptops are all well and good, but there are also some good deals to be had on much cheaper gaming laptops as well. Having scoured the bowels of the Prime Day bargain bucket, these are the three worth considering. There’s an Asus TUF FX505 with an entry-level GTX 1650 inside it, an HP Pavilion with a beefier GTX 1660 Ti graphics chip, and an MSI GF63 Thin with a GTX 1650 Ti that’s right in the middle. In other words, there’s something for everyone here, with savings in the region of £150 across the board.

The Turtles, yes those Turtles, are coming to Smite

3 years 7 months ago

Hi-Rez Studios is seemingly putting all of their money-making power into Smite, locking up deals for some fairly huge IPs to appear in the game. They just recently hosted Avatar: The Last Airbender and now they're going down the nostalgia hole (and further into their partnership with Nickelodeon) with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo are all appearing in their turtle glory, as part of the upcoming November "TMNT Battle Pass." As usual, these wacky characters are reskins of existing Gods. So Leonardo will double as Osiris, Donatello is predictably Sun Wukong, Raphael is Loki (ha, he would be) and Michelangelo is Mercury. You can also opt for "radical" versions of their skins, which emulate their '90s look.

As a reminder, Hi-Rez also runs Paladins, Realm Royale and most recently: Rogue Company. They're fairly busy for a private company!

Rockstar have reportedly grabbed Ruffian Games, making them Rockstar Dundee

3 years 7 months ago

Fiery action in a Crackdown 2 screenshot.

It seems that Rockstar Games, the makers of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, have snapped up Ruffian Games. The Dundee studio are known for making Crackdown 2, and most recently helped out with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. While neither Rockstar nor Ruffian have announced anything publicly, records filed with Companies House say that Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive now own at least a majority stake in Ruffian. Apparently they’re now renamed to Rockstar Dundee, and I’m disappointed they didn’t give a nod to Rockstar North’s office down south in Edinburgh by taking the name Rockstar Norther.

Rockstar Games Purchases Crackdown 2 Developer

3 years 7 months ago
Rockstar Games appears to have purchased Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games, taking the studio under its wing and rebranding it as Rockstar Dundee. The news arrives thanks to a report from The Gamer, which noted a series of Companies House listings confirming the acquisition and name change. The page for Rockstar Dundee lists 10 major filings all on October 6, 2020, which include the name change, a change of registered address, Take-Two Interactive Software assuming significant control of the company, and a series of new employees being confirmed as directors of the studio. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2010/07/02/crackdown-2-x360-video-review"] Studio head Gary Liddon and Creative Director Billy Thomson co-founded Ruffian Games in 2008, but both appear to have left the company in the wake of the acquisition, with filings pointing to the cessation of their position as directors at the studio and loss of significant control. A tweet from the official Ruffian Games account posted back in October 2019 noted that they were working on "unspecified titles for @RockstarGames". That points to Ruffian Games having been working with Rockstar for at least a year before being officially absorbed into the publisher. Whatever this transformation into Rockstar Dundee means is anyone's guess, but they join a cavalcade of studios working on future games for Rockstar. As well as Crackdown 2, Ruffian had previously worked on Kinect Star Wars, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Crackdown 3.

The SEGA Mega Drive Mini and PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini are going cheap for Prime Day

3 years 7 months ago

The SEGA Mega Drive Mini and PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini are currently reduced for Amazon Prime Day.

The Sega Mega Drive Mini is a reconstructed duplicate of the original 90s classic console, with over 40 pre-installed games that include Sonic, Castlevania, Tetris, Earthworm Jim and more. In their review, Digital Foundry called it the best retro console yet.

Meanwhile, the PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini is a similar product, a recreation of the "PC Engine" console from 1987 that's actually exclusive to Amazon - meaning this is literally the best price you'll be able to get it. It's got fifty games to choose from, with its own classics like Bomberman, Splatterhouse, Space Harrier and Bonk's Revenge.

Terraria launches its final content update today - for real, this time

3 years 7 months ago

You'd be well within your rights to think Terraria had finally finished updating earlier this year, as developer Re-Logic declared May's big content update was the game's last. But 2020 is full of twists and turns, and so Re-Logic has announced it's releasing a final update. Again.

Dubbed "Journey's Actual End", the latest update adds the "final" NPC and several new achievements, along with the usual mix of balance changes and bug fixes. There's also new vanity armour, and "the long-requested game credits (done Terraria style!)".

This bonus update will launch on PC sometime today, while mobile players can expect the whole of Journey's End (1.4) to release later this month. As of yet there doesn't appear to be an exact date for 1.4's arrival on console, with Re-Logic last week saying it's still "working on it".

In a video showcasing From Software's wonderful action game running at 60fps on a PlayStation 4 Pro, the celebrated modder said he'll let Sony go first "out of respect for PlayStation".

"I'll be releasing this patch publicly once the PlayStation 5 has released and Sony have made it clear whether or not Bloodborne will be enhanced on that system in any way," McDonald said.

Smash Ultimate lets you pick the Minecraft biome you want with a cheat code

3 years 7 months ago

Masahiro Sakurai is a madman when it comes to detail.

The extended look at Minecraft's Steve in Smash Ultimate is insane, especially the bit where Sakurai explains that every level had to be retooled to work with the character. Naturally, Steve's accompanying stage will be pretty detail-oriented as well.

Shared on the official Smash Bros. Twitter account, it has come to light that players will be able to hold certain button combinations to access specific biomes. As a reminder, biomes are separate areas in Minecraft that are randomly generated across a giant map; and host different resources and creatures.

To initiate the cheat-like functionality, you just hold down the button combinations above and select the stage. I'm going to be going with the Snowy Tundra fairly often! It's one of my favorite Minecraft biomes and Smash could use some more winter-themed stages.

As a reminder, Steve is out later today in Smash Ultimate.

Microsoft delves deeper into Xbox Series X backward compatibility details

3 years 7 months ago

When the next generation arrives, there's going to be a huge emphasis on older games.

That's just how Microsoft is rolling this year with a lack of some hard-hitting first-party exclusives: but it makes perfect sense. Microsoft has been committed to backward compatibility for some time now, striving to make a ton of super old games work on newer hardware, dating all the way back to the original Xbox. Today, they shared a bit more on how all of that is going to work.

Microsoft says that "backward compatible games run natively on the Xbox Series X and S, running with the full power of the CPU, GPU and SSD." You don't need to toggle a special boost mode, it'll just work, with "higher and more steady framerates," with "maximum resolution and visual quality." The publisher also touts "significant reductions in load times," in part due to the SSD and the Velocity Architecture initiative.

They're also boasting "Auto HDR," which allows the Xbox Series S and X to automatically enhance games with HDR that didn't previously have access to it. Microsoft says developers don't even need to implement it manually, and games as far back as Fuzion Frenzy can take advantage of it.

Amazingly, Microsoft is saying that some games will have "double the framerate," using Fallout 4 as an example: going from 30 FPS to 60 FPS. This will be for "select titles," and "not applicable for many [games]," so keep that in mind. Given what we found out about Sekiro hitting 60 FPS, it might be limited to semi-recent offerings; despite being a different case. Other bonuses include improved textures and better resolution.

Monster Train brings a new idea to a genre I love

3 years 7 months ago

I've always enjoyed and admired the ability of a DJ who can rethink music I thought I knew. The way they can smash something to pieces and put it back together in a way no one had thought of delights me. It takes real imagination. And yet, it's something people scoff at. Is it really art? They're just copying, they're not creating something new are they? Or are they?

Monster Train reminds me of them, those DJs. It's a deck-building Roguelike I loaded up and initially chided - for having cards that looked like they were lifted from HearthStone, and mechanics that felt like they were ripped from Slay the Spire. But then it delighted me by being mashed with something new.

Little chunky Sonic is in Fall Guys

Developer Mediatonic took to Twitch to reveal "little chunky Sonics" in its wildly popular party game. It costs five crowns for the top and five crowns for the bottom, and is out 14th October.

Fall Guys Sonic doesn't quite look like Sonic usually does, but he does have those iconic red shoes and white gloves. He's kind of terrifying.

Fall Guys' explosive success has sparked a number of eye-catching crossovers, from Portal to Hotline Miami. Obviously Mediatonic will have to do Mario next.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity teases the expansion of the Yiga Clan and a mysterious new figure

3 years 7 months ago

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity's marketing is really heating up, as Nintendo is starting to show off some of its unique bits.

While at first it seemed like just another Warriors game, Nintendo is leaning hard into the tie-in with Breath of the Wild. We just recently saw that there will be some heavy lore implications with the action-centric prequel, and now it looks like we're going to be getting a deeper look at the Yiga Clan.

While the Yiga were mostly a footnote in Breath of the Wild, featured in one major questline and a few sidequests, they're going to be front and center in Age of Calamity, if this new clip is anything to go by. We get to see the infamous Master Kohga, who will potentially play a greater role, as well as an "ominous figure" aiding the clan. I'm getting Agahnim vibes.

At the end of the video, two Yiga footmen are seen kneeling in front of a character with a tattered cloak and what might be a magical sextant. Talk about a tease!

Rockstar acquires Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games

3 years 7 months ago

Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games has been acquired by Rockstar and rebranded as Rockstar Dundee, according to a new listing via Companies House.

Companies House in the UK has two relevant listings relating to the acquisition; the first, dated 1st October, is a a notice that Rockstar's parent company Take-Two now has significant control of Ruffian, while the second, dated 6th October, is a certificate of name change, confirming the studio has been rebranded as Rockstar Dundee.

As noted by TheGamer, industry body The Scottish Games Network revealed Ruffian was working on a number of undisclosed "upcoming titles" for Rockstar last year, when it highlighted several job listings focussed on "multiplayer action games".

Amnesia: Rebirth is more than a decade of horror gaming refined

3 years 7 months ago

Ten years have passed since Frictional Games' seminal horror classic Amnesia: The Dark Descent traumatised the gaming world, and it's been five since the release of its astonishing sci-fi horror Soma; finally, though, the Swedish studio makes its long-awaited return next week, this time revisiting its decade-old franchise with new series entry, Amnesia: Rebirth. Yet while that might initially feel like an unexpected regression, especially after the dazzling freshness of Soma, Frictional sees Rebirth as the latest evolutionary step in the studio's journey - one it's been on since its inception in 2007 - to create a very particular type of horror experience.

"The thing is," explains Frictional's co-founder and creative director Thomas Grip of the studio's fascination with the genre, "in a shooter you shoot people, in a puzzler you puzzle things, and in a strategy game you strategise things, but there's not really any activity that's central to horror games... it's the emotions that you evoke.

"I think that's quite different from how you approach other genres and it adds so much more focus on how you structure narrative... and that's a very interesting way of making games."

Fortnite v14.30 Patch Adds Combat Shotgun, Rally Royale LTM & Marvel Knockout Super Series

3 years 7 months ago

Fortnite’s servers are currently experiencing some downtime as the development team release patch v14.30 to the world. The update adds the Combat Shotgun, a new Rally Royale LTM, and a Marvel Knockout Super Series to put a super-powered spin on the Battle Royale proceedings.

The Combat Shotgun is the latest weapon to be added to Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 4 since the season begun. This replaces the Tactical Shotgun in the current season in offering players a shotgun capable of dealing big damage at a faster rate than the Double Barrel or Charge Shotguns.

In addition to this, Fortnite v14.30 adds in the Rally Royale LTM where players will need to collect tickets to unlock the finish line and then get there before the other team. Rally Royale won’t be live as soon as the servers come back online from their scheduled downtime, but it will be available later in the week. Few other details have been shared about the mode so far.

That’s not the only variation in game mode that we’ll get in Fortnite v14.30 either. The Marvel Knockout Super Series kicks-off on October 14 and is a set of special Marvel Knockout tournaments. These sound like they’re going to be largely focused around the various superpower abilities that have been introduced into the game since the start of this season, but again no specifics have been shared just yet.

What we do know is that winners of the first Marvel Knockout Super Series cup will get early access to the new Daredevil Outfit before it arrives in the Item Shop. There are four of tournaments planned over the next few weeks, and competing in them all will net you the exclusive Nexus War glider.

Infinity Ward finally adds mode-specific uninstall options for 225GB Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PC

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PC finally gets mode-specific uninstall options on PC - just days before the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta launches on the platform.

Xbox Game Pass is all over the genre spectrum in October

3 years 7 months ago

As we move ever closer to the "next generation," Microsoft is gently reminding us that the transition will be a little smoother if you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber.

This month you get a little bit of everything: strategy, action, JRPG, retro, puzzler and....sports? The first run, which kicks off on October 15, involves Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, which is a brand new game that's actually out on that same day (reminder: Microsoft is pushing brand new first-party releases as a part of the Game Pass program).

October 15 will also host Heave Ho, Katana Zero, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition and The Swords of Ditto. A week later, on October 21-22, ScourgeBringer, Cricket 19 and Supraland are out.

This drop might not seem exciting, but it's a sleeping giant of sorts. Tales of Vesperia is worth playing if you haven't experienced it before, and it feels right at home on the Xbox 360: a former bastion of JRPGs and the one to welcome Vesperia into the world originally. Katana Zero is also a great way to get sucked into an afternoon if you enjoyed Hotline Miami.

There's a lot to choose from! It's the calm before the November 10 Xbox Series X storm.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for PC now has mode-specific install options to trim down 225GB file size

3 years 7 months ago

Almost a full year after release, Infinity Ward has finally added mode-specific install options to the PC edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The new feature will let players pick and choose which elements of the game they wish to have installed at any given time, in an effort to drive down the military shooter's unfathomable 225GB file size.

Once the patch goes live, PC users will be able to select the individual addition or removal of huge "Data Packs," including the single-player campaign, Spec Ops, multiplayer, and the standalone battle royale title, Warzone. This will allow CoD players to free up precious HDD space for other games and applications... Perhaps Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War?

On a personal note, while this multi-install feature has been available on the PS4 edition for some time, I have run into multiple problems when it comes to reinstalling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The title will often ask for missing data packs, then flatly refuse to download them when requested, even after a full reinstall. A quick Google search sees that I'm not alone in running into this frustrating issue, so here's hoping the PC edition will not suffer the same pitfalls.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta goes live on all platforms later this week.

Final Fantasy XIV Update 5.35 Now Available For Download; You Can Get Ready For The Housing Race

3 years 7 months ago

Square Enix has just made Final Fantasy XIV update 5.35 available for download.

The download will require approximately 461 megabytes of your bandwidth on PC and you can start it right now.

While the servers aren’t open just yet, as they will go up at 3:00 am PDT, downloading the update in advance will be helpful for many.

Today is one of the rare occasions in which new wards are being added to the housing areas of the game, meaning that those who don’t yet have a home to call their own finally have a chance to purchase it.

Considering the tight housing market, it’s likely that such a chance won’t last long in many server, with predictable effects as soon as the servers open.
