David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker team up for Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality game next year

3 years 6 months ago

There's a double whammy of Doctor Who games tumbling out of the old time vortex early next year; one, starring David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker, is making its way to PC and consoles, and the other is coming to iOS, Android, and Switch.

Tennant and Whittaker - resuming their roles as the tenth and thirteenth Doctors, respectively - are joining forces in Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, an expansion of 2019's so-so VR effort Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, by developer Maze Theory.

The Edge of Reality "reimagines, and builds upon" last year's experience, adding new puzzles and challenges, new monsters, and new explorable worlds. Whittaker already featured in The Edge of Time, guiding players on their TARDIS-powered adventures, but Tennant is making his debut in this reworked version, which is said to continue the original story.

Epic Games' lawsuit against Apple could have "significant and serious ramifications for Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft"

3 years 6 months ago

The ongoing legal battle between Epic Games and Apple is likely to have "significant and serious ramifications" for the rest of the gaming industry, according to a judge presiding over the case.

In court documents shared on Friday, Judge Yvonne Gonzales Rogers intimated that the row about forced profit share that requires developers to give up 30 per cent of revenue generated on the App Store was no different from the "walled gardens" online stores of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo on their respective consoles.

It's the latest development in the two megacorps' public spat that ignited when Apple blocked Fortnite from the App Store after Epic Games circumvented Apple and Google's system to retain 100 per cent of the funds generated by its in-app microstransactions. Microsoft also filed a statement in support of Epic and Unreal Engine.

The Sunday Papers

3 years 6 months ago

Sundays are for– oh no. Sundays are for doing my taxes. Quick, let’s procrastinate with some of the week’s best games writing (and podcasts, and TikToks).

Brendan Caldwell, former features editor and current RPS list goblin, launched a podcast this past week. Hey Lesson! is a podcast about asking smart people stupid questions about videogames. For example, he asks neuroscientist Dr Ofir Turel about piss mushrooms in Death Stranding to figure out why our brains crave ‘likes’, and talks to caver Christine Grosart about animals getting lost in caves a la Spelunky. This is a great idea for a podcast, finely produced, and each episode also has a co-host, including familiar voices like Paul Dean and other former RPSman Matthew Castle. If you like the series, consider supporting Brendan’s work via Patreon.

Review: Super Mario Bros. 35

3 years 6 months ago

Super Mario Bros. for the NES wasn't my first game, but it was the first cartridge I ever owned. I treated it like a sacred talisman.

In between Duck Hunt bouts, I made it my mission to memorize the ins and outs of each and every level. Eventually, I got to the end. That simplicity couldn't have come at a more perfect time in my life.

Games have changed a lot in the last 35 years or so, which makes it tough to really dig into Super Mario Bros. 35's streamlined veneer. But it sure is fun in short bursts.

Giovanna will bring her super-cool style to Guilty Gear Strive

3 years 6 months ago

Arc System Works has revealed another all-new character headed to its gorgeous-looking anime fighter Guilty Gear Strive. And this one's a doozy. Presenting super-cool federal agent, Giovanna.

Despite her fashionista appeal, Giovanna is actually a high-ranking member of the secret service. Given her hair, dress sense, and vocation, it's hard not to make comparisons to King of Fighters' Vanessa and Street Fighter's Crimson Viper. Still, Giovanna holds her own in the ring, taking down her opposition with an incredible range of rib-breaking kicks. Being Guilty Gear, Giovanna brings a metaphysical side, in the form of a spirit wolf companion called Rei, who manifests itself within her acrobatic style.

ArcSys has described Giovanna as an "entry-level" character, with hopes that she will allow new players to find their footing in the deep and complex fighting title. I think she looks amazing and I wish I was her... apart from the "working for the U.S. government" thing, of course. I can't wait to try Giovanna and her wild footwear out come spring.

Also of note, the trailer ends with the suggestion that the next announced character will be Mito Anji. The debut trailer for the Japanese fan-fighter will premiere on January 1, 2021.

Guilty Gear Strive launches on PS4, PS5, and PC in April 2021.

Demaking in the year of next gen

3 years 6 months ago

The videogames industry has always sought to define artistic achievement in terms of new technology. Every next gen console year brings with it the same old talk of bursting through constraints on developer imaginations, of "infinite" potential finally unlocked care of another few hundred pounds' worth of swishly tailored plastic and silicon. Current gen platforms are suddenly recast as emptied-out, spent, even things to be ashamed of: as Don Mattrick infamously quipped of playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, “if you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards."

Guilty Gear -Strive- for PS5, PS4, & PC Gets Explosive Story Trailer, Screenshots, Season Pass, & Editions Details

3 years 6 months ago

Following the earlier reveal including characters and release date, Arc System Works released another trailer and more info about Guilty Gear -Strive-.

The trailer focuses on the story, providing a look at the narrative part of the game, which we already know will be very sizable.

We also get the confirmation that the April 9 release date (for PS5, PS4, and PC) is also valid for the west.

That being said, those who will buy the Deluxe and Ultimate editions will be able to play on April 6. This early access version will have only 13 characters (Mito Anji and the last yet unknown character won’t be included), all offline modes, and the pòrologue of the story mode.

The last two characters, the online modes, and the rest of the story will become playable alongside the general release on April 9.

We also learn about the first season pass (which likely means that more are planned). It’ll include five playable characters, extra colors (five colors for each of the 20 characters), two additional stages, and the “Another Story” narrative scenario.

Early purchase bonuses will include special character colors that swap Sol & Ky’s default colors and a special item only for them that changes the color of their fire and lightning attacks.

A beta test will launched on the PlayStation Store in early 2021 with day 1 access granted to those who pre-order.

Guilty Gear -Strive- for PS5, PS4, & PC Reveals Release Date, New Character Giovanna & Mito Anji

3 years 6 months ago

Today Arc System Works had a few announcements to make about its upcoming fighting game Guilty Gear -Strive-.

First of all, we get a release date for the game, which will be April 9, 2021, for PS5, PS4, and PC. It’s worth mentioning that for now this date has been confirmed only for Japan.

We also get the reveal of two characters. The fist is a new character, Giovanna, voiced by Mayumi Shintani.

Interestingly, she works as the bodyguard for the President of the United States.

The second is a returning character, Mito Anji. The next trailer will be on January 1st, 2021, just in time to celebrate the new year.

There is another character in the starting roster, but that will be revealed at a later date. The initial roster will include 15 characters.

Another reveal involved the existence of a season pass that will add more characters down the line. Of course, they will also purchasable separately.

The story mode will be very extensive, more than the previous games.

The Community Spotlight 2020.10.10

3 years 6 months ago

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight and I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the best creative endeavors from the Giant Bomb community! This week was certainly "interesting." For a variety of reasons, we have a record breaking number of discussion threads for you to scan over and partake in if you have not already. Major talking points include the PlayStation 5, especially the teardown video, and Genshin Impact. Though, Baldur's Gate 3 soft-launch and Crucible's shit-canning have also spurned massive speculation and discussions from the community. However, I do wish to mention something that has come up. As I will share in a little bit, some former CBSi sites have been hit by layoffs. As is the case whenever the topic of layoffs arise, please be respectful of those who have been impacted. Likewise, speculation on hiring's and possible "pick ups" by Giant Bomb are both unhelpful and not appreciated. It goes without saying this year has been rough for all staff members and this is one small thing we can all do to avoid making things worse. With that aside, let's jump into the site-related housekeeping.

3 years 6 months ago

Party Animals, a game about cute animals wrestling and beating each other up, reached a concurrent player count of over 100,000 players with a free demo earlier today.

The game is a PC physics-based multiplayer brawler in the vein of Gang Beasts and Human Fall Flat where much of the fun is players flailing around while grabbing and fighting with other players or objects.

It was released as a free demo on Sunday, Oct. 4 and is featured in the Steam Games Festival: Autumn Edition, which showcases games scheduled to release later this year through May 2021 with free demos, livestreams, and developer Q&As.

According to SteamDB, the Party Animals demo reached a concurrent player peak of almost 70,000 on Thursday and Friday mornings around 10 a.m. ET.

The game hit its current peak of 108,764 around the same time earlier this morning, placing it in the top 10 most played games on Steam alongside other games such as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, Team Fortress 2, and Grand Theft Auto V.

The Party Animals free demo was previously showcased during the Steam Games Festival Summer Edition last June with a peak of 7,858 concurrent players.

Party Animals is scheduled to release later this year, and its latest free demo will be playable on Steam until Tuesday, Oct. 13.
