Shithouse’s Dylan Gelula says it’s high time celebrities stopped dressing up for Halloween

3 years 7 months ago

The other week, actor Dylan Gelula tweeted a teary-eyed video message to her followers, apologizing for sharing a photo of a Trader Joe’s marquee that read, “Let’s give them pumpkin to taste about.” And while one might actually take offense to a marketing pun so crude and nonsensical, Gelula’s pleas for mercy were, of…

FIFA 21 Has Biggest Boxed Launch Of 2021 In UK, But Switch Version Flops

3 years 7 months ago

FIFA is a big deal in the UK, and the launch of FIFA 21 has done big business in the UK--with some caveats. FIFA 21 is the biggest physical game launch in the UK this year, but sales are down compared to FIFA 20, and the Switch version has sold poorly.

Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that sales on FIFA 21's boxed copies are down 42% on boxed sales of FIFA 20. There's a few potential reasons for that--the looming next generation of systems (which will bring new versions of FIFA 21), the growth of the digital market, and the COVID-19 pandemic making players less likely to travel to a store to buy the game all factors in.

It's unknown how well the game has sold digitally, but this is still a big launch, overtaking the launch sales of The Last of Us Part II and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (both of which are single console exclusives).

The World of Warcraft edition of the Yeti X microphone is decadent and still high quality

3 years 7 months ago

There are a lot of schools of thought when it comes to microphone tech, but I've been a Blue (da ba dee da ba daa) man for many years now.

The now-Logitech-owned company has a penchant for simplistic designs that are not only effective from a recording standpoint, but also aesthetically pleasing: if you've watched a video podcast or stream, you've probably seen a Blue microphone at some point.

The Yeti X has been one of Blue's top pieces of hardware for a while now: and that family is about to expand later this month with the very weird, yet very interesting "World of Warcraft Edition" Yeti X.

Star Citizen's Squadron 42 Campaign Won't Release In 2020, But It's In The "Close Out" Phase

3 years 7 months ago

Star Citizen's single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is not going to launch in 2020. Cloud Imperium Games boss Chris Roberts said in a blog post that the game will be done "when it is done," and that won't be in 2020.

"I know everyone would like a definitive date on when Squadron 42 will be done but the best answer I can give you is that it will be done when it is done, and that will not be this year," he said.

While there is no release date yet, Cloud Imperium has launched a new YouTube series called The Briefing Room that promises to provide updates on Squadron 42's ongoing development. Additionally, the studio will share more details on how the development is progressing beginning in December with "much more in-depth visual dives into what we've done and features and content we can share without spoilers."

Stop Buying Steam Games Available Through Game Pass With This Browser Extension

3 years 7 months ago

If you have Xbox Game Pass for PC, then there's a good chance there's some crossover between your Steam library and what's available at no additional charge through the subscription service. But now, a new browser extension has been created to help prevent this by showing you when a Steam game is available through Game Pass.

Ali Güler has created a browser extension, Game Pass Info For Steam, that adds a notification to game pages when you're checking the Steam store through your browser. The extension, which is available for both Chrome and Firefox, adds a green bar if a game is available through Game Pass for PC, telling you when it was added to the service.

"Have you ever had the situation where you bought a game, only to later find out that it's already on Xbox Game Pass," Güler asks on the page. "It happened to me. Luckily it was only 10 bucks."

Burger King Teases PlayStation News With A Familiar Sound

3 years 7 months ago

Burger King has released a new teaser that suggests that it's partnering with Sony for some kind of promotion, and people believe it may be connected to the PlayStation 5.

The advertisement shows the Burger King himself opening a takeout bag, with a blue light shining in his eyes. A short sound can also be heard. The ad ends with the mascot walking away to reveal the date October 15, which is presumably when all will be revealed. "Do Whopper sandwiches normally do this?" the message asks.

The ad does not mention PlayStation or PS5 at all, but the official PlayStation account quote-tweeted the video with the look and listen emojis. Given that tease, people are speculating that what we're hearing is the PS5 start-up sound, but that's only conjecture at this point.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Are Joining Smite As Skins

3 years 7 months ago

Smite is getting new skins, and they're based on four of our favorite turtles. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming to the game in November as part of a new battle pass.

Each turtle is a skin of an existing god, so the turtles themselves aren't being inducted into the godly pantheon, per se. Here's which god each character is being skinned onto.

  • Leonardo (Osiris)
  • Donatello (Sun Wukong)
  • Raphael (Loki)
  • Michelangelo (Mercury)

The trailer, below, shows off both skins for each turtle, and is a real hit of nostalgia with its upbeat rendition of the old cartoon theme.

The Osiris/Leonardo skin will be unlocked immediately, while the others can be unlocked by playing the game after purchasing the Battle Pass. These characters have new models, rigging, and animation, so they're more than simple reskins.

PS5 UI Tease Comes From an Unexpected Place: Burger King

3 years 7 months ago
An unlikely source - Burger King - is teasing an announcement with PlayStation for October 15 with what very well may be the start-up sound for the PS5. Burger King took to Twitter and shared a video featuring The Burger King opening up a big bag that shines a blue light in his mascoty face. In addition to the light, we hear a sound that was also featured in the PlayStation 5 reveal event with a UI tease and may be the sound we will hear as we turn on Sony's next-gen console.

Bloodborne Modder Plans To Release 60 FPS Hack, But Is Waiting To See If Sony Will Upgrade The Game First

Fortnite Is Boosting The Framerate To 90FPS On Some Samsung Devices

3 years 7 months ago

If you're playing Fortnite on a recent Samsung tablet, you could soon find that the game is a much more fluid experience. From October 13, the Tab S7 and Tab S7+ will be able to run Fortnite at a boosted framerate, reaching up to 90FPS.

This feature, which was previously exclusive to OnePlus devices, means that these phones will have the smoothest possible version of Fortnite. Of course, due to a current legal battle, Fortnite currently isn't available to download or update on many mobile devices--but Tab S7 owners can still jump in with players across PC and consoles.

Fortnite has previously been playable at 60FPS on mobile devices.

The Samsung Galaxy Store is currently the only mobile store that you can download Fortnite through. The Tab S7 and S7+ are Samsung's newest Tab devices, sporting a 120Hz screen and a powerful mobile chipset.

Fortnite is also coming to Series X and PS5, where it will also likely get an FPS boost. The game is currently in the middle of its Marvel-themed Nexus Wars season, and from October 14 you'll be able to unlock a Daredevil costume.

Facebook Accounts Will Be Required for All Oculus Quest 2 Users

3 years 7 months ago

Existing Oculus and new users will need a Facebook account to log in and use the upcoming Oculus Quest 2 headset when it releases on Oct. 13, Facebook announced earlier this week.

The company had announced last August that it would be phasing out Oculus accounts in favor of Facebook accounts to log into its virtual reality headsets. Existing Oculus users would have until Jan. 1, 2023 to make the switch, while new accounts would need a Facebook account starting this month.

The change begins this week with the release of the Oculus Quest 2, which will require existing users to merge their Oculus and Facebook accounts when logging into the device for the first time.

Users will be able to have separate profile names for VR and Facebook, and can turn off people finding them through their Facebook name in privacy settings through the Oculus app or headset.

Existing Gear VR, Oculus Go, Rift, Rift S, or Quest users can still use their Oculus accounts on those systems until Jan. 1, 2023. Non-merged users can still use their headsets, but could lose some games or apps that require a Facebook account or are not supported by the developer anymore.

The Oculus Quest 2 will begin shipping out tomorrow, Oct. 13 starting at $299 and is PC optional. Facebook announced last month that it would be discontinuing its PC-required Oculus Rift S hardware, which would make the Oculus Quest 2 the only option for Oculus users to upgrade.

NPD Analyst Predicts Best-Selling Games And Consoles Of Holiday 2020

3 years 7 months ago

The busy holiday shopping season is nearly upon us--Amazon's Prime Day begins October 13, with Black Friday coming in November before the holidays. Video games are expected to have a huge holiday at retail, and now NPD analyst Mat Piscatella has released his predictions.

In a blog, Piscatella says he expects total spending on video games in the US to reach $13.4 billion in November and December, rising 24 percent compared to last year and setting a new holiday season record. Console hardware is expected to drive the growth, which makes sense given that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles are slated for release in November and are expected to be very popular.

Piscatella said the total amount of money spent on video games in the entirety of 2020 might surpass $50 billion, which would be a new all-time high for the US.

Nintendo Is Reducing The Price Of Switch Joy-Cons In Japan

3 years 7 months ago

If you're in Japan and searching for a new pair of Joy-Con controllers for your Nintendo Switch, you're in luck. VGC is reporting that Nintendo has cut the consumer price of their tiny controllers within the country, bringing them down by over 16% after over three and a half years on sale.

Starting November 6, a single Joy-Con will cost 3740 yen (about $36) plus tax, down from 4480 yen (about $43) plus tax. This price cut is being applied across all controller colors, and will be available through Nintendo Japan's online store as well as at retailers.

While Joy-Con were previously slightly more expensive in Japan than in the US (where a pair costs $80), now they cost a bit less.

Unfortunately, it's not clear yet whether Nintendo will similarly cut prices in other regions, especially with the Switch selling extremely well. It's also worth noting that Joy-Cons continue to suffer from "drift" issues, and Nintendo has been facing lawsuits as a result--including one from a child.

It's worth keeping an eye on Amazon right now if you're looking for a cheaper Joy-Con set, as last year the company discounted them for Prime Day. We'll keep you updated on our Nintendo Switch Prime Day hub.

Terraria’s Final Content Update Releases October 13

3 years 7 months ago

Terraria developer Re-Logic announced that the final content update for the game will be releasing on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The 1.4.1 update, called Journey’s Actual End, will include “the final NPC, new achievements, lots of balance changes, bug fixes, new vanity, and the long-requested game credits (done Terraria style),” according to the short trailer’s description.

The studio released the final expansion for Terraria, Journey’s End or the 1.4 update, on PC last May to coincide with the game’s 9th anniversary. The “final” major update contained new enemies, over 800 items, an ultra-hardcore difficulty mode, an in-game Bestiary, and more.

The 1.4.1 update will be coming to the PC first, while console versions have not received the 1.4 update yet. The studio said last May that the Journey’s End expansion would be coming to console, but did not announce a date.

The game originally launched in 2011 for PC and has been ported across two console generations, handheld consoles, and mobile. It has been supported with new content through free updates since its launch and has sold over 30 million copies in its lifetime as of last March.

To Combat Massive PC File Size, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Is Adding New Uninstall Options

3 years 7 months ago

Infinity Ward is rolling out a new update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that will give PC players another way to decrease the game's file size, which is important given how massive the game has become.

Production director Paul Haile said on Twitter that the October 13 update for Modern Warfare on PC will allow players to uninstall specific modes to free up space. Players on PC (and console, too) could already uninstall the campaign to free up space, and this goes one step further.

Modern Warfare's PC file size is north of 200 GB, so it's a welcome feature to be able to uninstall modes that you currently aren't playing much, but it's not an ideal situation regardless.

Xbox Series X Launch Trailer Features Black Panther Star Daniel Kaluuya

3 years 7 months ago

Microsoft is ushering in a new console generation in November, and to hype up the launch of the Xbox Series X/S consoles, the company has recruited Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya for the console's launch trailer.

The trippy trailer is set to the song "No Ordinary" by Labrinth, and it shows Kaluuya plugging into a new Xbox and getting transported into fantastical worlds. Master Chief makes an appearance, though it's not a proper look at Halo Infinite. The trailer ends with the tagline, "Power Your Dreams," which you should expect to see often, as Microsoft has trademarked that phrase.

This trailer premiered during Sunday Night Football this past weekend, and you can expect to see it lots more in the lead-up to the Xbox Series X/S launch in November.

Phasmophobia Is The Perfect Horror Game For Halloween

3 years 7 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

It's October and from the moment it hit the first of the month, we've been officially in Halloween mode. Whether you're looking for a new horror adventure to play for yourself or looking for one that's great for streaming, Phasmophobia is a fine pick for the month of spooks.

If the game name sounds familiar, you may have heard about it from this past weekend where this horror adventure skyrocketed to Twitch fame with averaging a viewership of over 100,000 concurrently. While that number has dipped a little bit now that the workweek has started, it's still a vibrant and active hub over on Twitch and for good reason.

It's important to note that Phasmophobia is an Early Access title on Steam, so bugs? You're going to run into them. Its graphics aren't the greatest and the mechanics can go from good to "what the heck just happened" really quick, but still? It's stupidly addictive and a large part of that is because of how this game sets up for playing with friends.

Sorry, Halo 5 Is Not Being Added To The Master Chief Collection

3 years 7 months ago

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the most complete Halo package ever released, but it doesn't have every one of Master Chief's journeys included in it. Halo 5 is the only mainline game missing from the collection, and it's going to stay that way.

Developer 343 Industries reaffirmed in a blog post that Halo 5 is not currently planned to be added to The Master Chief Collection. The wording suggests this is not a set-in-stone declaration, but for now, it seems quite unlikely that Halo 5 will join The Master Chief Collection.

Halo 4 on PC is lookin' really good.

As it stands, Halo 4 will be the final game added to the collection on PC. The Xbox One edition has included Halo 4 since release in 2014.

Quarantine Has Made Video Games About More Than Escapism

3 years 7 months ago

Video games are an escapist medium. That's what everyone always says. And it's true! They allow us to be whoever or whatever we want, no matter the realm of possibility. Wizards, monsters, survivors in the post-apocalypse, anthropomorphic marsupials named Crash – we can be anything. We can escape our day-to-day routines and problems, and we can live a life beyond our wildest expectations.

In 2020, this is perhaps essential. Between COVID-19, election season, and a constant barrage of bad news, reality is bleak. Exacerbating everything is the fact that, you can’t really leave your house unless you can help it, due to the risk of spreading or catching the virus. There has perhaps never been a better time in modern history to want to escape into the fantasy worlds of video games to just give ourselves a break from it all.

But despite all of this, I find myself wanting to draw my time in quarantine out, to make time go slower. I’m still escaping in a way, but not in the ways I used to. Rather than hide in a make-believe world by myself, I want to inhabit worlds with other people, I want to live in those moments and conversations.

Pokemon Go Team Rocket Event Now Live, Adds Red Eggs, New Shadow Pokemon, And More

3 years 7 months ago

A surprise new event has begun in Pokemon Go. From now through October 19, you'll earn new "strange eggs" when you defeat Team Go Rocket leaders in battle. Not only that, but you'll also have a chance to catch new kinds of Shadow Pokemon, including Shiny versions.

As developer Niantic previously teased, the aforementioned strange eggs feature red polka dots. What sets them apart from other eggs is that they'll hatch into certain Poison- and Dark-type Pokemon, such as Larvitar, Scraggy, Trubbish, and Vullaby. The eggs also require much more time to hatch; you'll need to walk 12 km to hatch a strange egg, although hatch distance will be cut down by a quarter for any egg that you place in an Incubator during the event.

As previously mentioned, you'll receive a strange egg when you defeat one of Team Go Rocket's three leaders: Cliff, Arlo, or Sierra. You'll still be able to receive these eggs even after the new event ends, but the Rocket leaders will be appearing much more frequently until October 19, making this your best chance to get them. On top of that, the following Pokemon will appear in the wild more frequently during the event:

It’s the latest of several game series crossovers that have made it into the game as unlockable skins. Now that Sega is at the table, I have a humble suggestion for a couple other characters that are great at silly fisticuffs.

Respawn Delayed Apex Legends Launch So Dev Could Finalize Adoption

3 years 7 months ago

Apex Legends launched a few hours late back in February 2019. Former Respawn lead programmer Jon Shiring had a court date to finalize his daughter's adoption at the same time the battle royale was supposed to be released.

"We had planned it for that morning, and then my court appointment to finalize my adoption came through - the court had picked February 4th at 10am - the same time as the Apex launch, I panicked," Shiring, who left Respawn in March to start a new game studio, tweeted. "Since I ran the ops and online services team for the game, this was bad."
