Penny's Big Breakaway and its unruly yo-yo platforming feels like a hyper Sonic The Hedgehog

4 months 2 weeks ago

A great 3D platformer seems to be a rare and special thing these days. I think Psychonauts 2 was the last one that really took my breath away, but outside of that (as well as obviously every 3D Nintendo platformer), I often struggle to think of many games that could be considered its equal. There's always something holding them back, isn't there? Whether it's a wonky camera, slightly unwieldly controls, or the platforming itself is just a little too pedestrian to ignite the imagination.

So where does Penny's Big Breakaway fit into the equation? This is the next game from former Sonia Mania dev Christian Whitehead's new studio, Evening Star, and yep, you can definitely tell this was made by some real Sonic heads. Penny and her (strangely toothy) sentient yo-yo, err, Yo-Yo, feel like a ball of energy just waiting to bust out across the colourful scenery of their home world of Macaroon, and golly, they sure can fly with just a couple of timely button presses. Alas, there is a but. For me at least, Penny and Yo-Yo are perhaps a bit too energetic for my platforming tastes, and having spent a few hours with an early preview build, I often found them quite a rambunctious pairing to keep under control.

Obsidian Explains Why Avowed Only Lets You Pick Human or Elf

4 months 2 weeks ago

Upcoming Obsidian RPG Avowed takes place in Eora, which in the fictional universe of Pillars of Eternity, is pretty diverse. But after Pillars let players choose from a number of different character races, fans have been wondering for some time now why Avowed is only letting them pick human or elf when customizing a player character.

We've learned that Avowed player character creation is limited to making either a human or an elf in previous game reveals - no dwarves, no aumauas, and definitely no godlikes. While this has been a disappointment to some fans, Avowed game director Carrie Patel has made it clear that the reasons for this limitation are twofold: it's both a story choice and a development decision.

On the story side, Patel explains in an interview with IGN, it's because the player in Avowed is a representative from the Aedyr Empire, which is predominantly made up of humans and elves. Those familiar with Pillars of Eternity lore will recognize that this is indeed established canon, and has shaped a lot of the region's particular culture.

Still, that might be cold comfort to those hoping to recreate their aumaua OC from Pillars in Avowed. For those folks, Patel offers some additional context that helps things make a bit more sense from the development side:

The Internet Reacts to Hideo Kojima’s Brilliantly Bizarre Death Stranding 2 Trailer

4 months 2 weeks ago

If there was a game of January 2024’s PlayStation State of Play it was Death Stranding 2.

Not only did we get confirmation of its full title (yep, it’s really called Death Stranding 2: On the Beach), and a first look at characters played by Mad Max director George Miller and Elle Fanning, but we got an extended trailer that showed Hideo Kojima at his brilliant, bizarre best. There’s a glam rock Joker, creepy little hands, and the star of the show: a stop motion puppet that looks like Alan Wake.

As a reminder, here’s the trailer:

As Kojima surely knew it would, the internet is having its fun analysing the Death Stranding 2 trailer for hidden details. Here Kojima delivered. As one Twitter / X user pointed out, there are BTs in the smoke during the scene in which Fragile enjoys a cigarette.

Twitter user @killian_C_u noticed the riff Higgs plays on the guitar is the BBS theme (Kojima reposted this tweet, so we know it’s on the money).

Metro Developer Makes Clear PlayStation VR2 Game Awakening Isn't Next 'Mainline' Metro Game

4 months 2 weeks ago

Developer 4A Games has made clear Metro Awakening, the PSVR2 game announced during the January 2024 PlayStation State of Play, is not the next mainline Metro game but instead a spin-off.

Following its announcement at the State of Play, Metro fans without Sony's $550 / £530 PlayStation 5 accessory grew a little concerned they'd waited five years for another game only to see it announced for a platform they didn't own or want.

4A Games took to X/Twitter to alleviate these concerns, however, reassuring fans it's still working on the next multiplatform mainline Metro game, while Awakening is developed by Vertigo Games.

"This is not the next mainline Metro game by 4A Games," the developer said. "That is still in development and, as we have stated previously, will come to generation nine consoles and PC. This is a different project developed by Vertigo Games."

Generation nine refers to the current generation of consoles, meaning the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Nintendo continues to allude typical console cycles, though its imminent Switch successor could also be a possibility for whatever this next mainline Metro game is.

RPS Game Club kicks off today with Cobalt Core

RPS Game Club is back in action for 2024 today, and our first pick of the year is the exceedingly good Cobalt Core, a spaceship roguelike deckbuilder where you're slipping and sliding out the way of incoming missiles to get to the bottom of why you and the rest of your animal pals seem to be stuck in a pesky timeloop. I had an absolute blast with it when it came out at the end of last year, and really, this is just the perfect excuse to shove it back in front of your faces again.

Could Hideo Kojima’s Return to Action Espionage Be One of the First PS6 Games?

4 months 2 weeks ago

During the PlayStation State of Play January 2024 showcase, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima did what he does best and surprised the gaming world, this time with the announcement he’s returning to the “action espionage” genre with a video game and movie hybrid that’ll have "near life-like graphics”.

Of course, the initial reaction revolved around the shock revelation that Kojima is making what sounds like a Metal Gear spiritual successor having left Konami years ago. But since then, fans have turned to another tantalising prospect: that project Physint, as it’s codenamed, could be one of the first PlayStation 6 games.

We don’t know much about Physint, but what we do know suggests a PS6 launch is a distinct possibility. During the State of Play, Kojima said production is expected to begin "in earnest" at Kojima Productions after Death Stranding 2 and in partnership with Sony. So, we know Physint is coming to PlayStation consoles. That’s a given. But when could it come out?

There’s no release window for Physint, understandably at this stage. But we now know Death Stranding 2 has a 2025 release window. We don’t know when in 2025 it will come out. It may end up delayed somewhat. But let’s say, at the earliest, it comes out during the first quarter of 2025. Then, if what Kojima said during the State of Play holds true, development on Physint will begin “in earnest”.

New Palworld patch stops other players stealing your best pals and makes pal breeding easier

4 months 2 weeks ago

Palworld, the survival game filled with legally distinct Pokémon and numerous Glock-19s, has received its first major patch. Straight off the production line are fixes to crashes, as well as enemy pals getting stuck in walls. And if you've been plagued by other players stealing your flock, then worry no longer, as pal spheres chucked at your low-HP pals won't capture them anymore. Breeding also becomes easier, with the removal of some annoying flourishes. There's a lot more and it gets progressively sillier.

Metro Awakening is a series origin story for VR, coming 2024

4 months 2 weeks ago

At last night's State of Play, Vertigo Games and Deep Silver lifted the lid on Metro Awakening, an upcoming origin story for the Metro series.

The game is described as a story-driven adventure, built exclusively for VR. It promises plenty of stealth and a good dash of combat, with the developer stating this will be the "most immersive" Metro experience to date.

You will play as Serdar in Metro Awakening. Serdar is "a doctor and a rationalist" in search of medication for his wife. This search will take players to the tunnels beneath Moscow, but it won't be an easy trip. You see, the tunnels are full of mutants. "As your courage and sanity are pushed to the limit you must learn to walk the line between life and death, the spirit and the material world, and awaken the being you will become..." the official blurb teases. You can see Metro Awakening's announcement trailer below.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Getting Free Trial on PlayStation Plus Premium

4 months 2 weeks ago

Sony is giving PlayStation Plus Premium members on PS5 a free trial of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games.

Revealed on the PlayStation Blog, those subscribed to the $159.99 / £119.99 a year PlayStation Plus tier can download Spider-Man 2 at no additional cost on February 6 and play two hours before making the decision to purchase it fully or not.

As is the case for all PlayStation Plus Premium game trials — which also include heavy hitters Baldur's Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and more — all saved data and trophies will carry over if players do decide to purchase the game later.

Spider-Man 2 continues the story of Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they take on a rogues' gallery of Marvel villains headlined by the big bad Venom. It earned an 8/10 in IGN's review, as we said: "Marvel's Spider-Man 2 delivers Insomniac's best tale yet, and despite its open world falling short, is a reliably fun superhero power trip."

Palworld Steam Patch v0.1.3.0 Makes Lots of Welcome Fixes

4 months 2 weeks ago

Palworld developer Pocketpair has released a significant new patch for the Steam version of the game that makes a number of fixes.

Steam patch v0.1.4.0 fixes crash issues, gameplay issues, and glitches, among other things. Elsewhere, there are fixes for base issues, including one that means Pals who are manually assigned to a breeding farm will not become hungry and their manual assignments will not be removed.

Some of the bugs fixed by this patch are worth highlighting because they’re quite funny. For example, there’s a fix for an issue where Pals at the base would continue to cut down trees that were already cut (talk about a thankless task), and a fix for an issue where Pals at the base were on the verge of death due to unexplained falling damage (we've all been there). Here’s another one: a fix for an issue where Pals at the base would float under some conditions. What are those Pals smoking?

On a more serious note, the patch makes an initial fix for an issue where the game would always crash and save data would be corrupted when the guild's total number of Pals captured reached around 7000. However, save data that has already been in this state (in the case of a server, the server's world data) prior to this update will still be unable to load, Pocketpair said.

Life is Strange creators discuss leaving their hit narrative adventure series behind, building on it with Lost Records

4 months 2 weeks ago

The team behind Life is Strange are no strangers to parallel timelines. Don't Nod's original narrative adventure ended with a binary choice - you could save the life of your closest companion, or doom them to protect the town you both grew up in. It was a decision that rippled through the stories of subsequent sequels, and remains an emotional peak the franchise has since struggled to surpass. Now, after years of silence, the team behind that ending are finally back with a new game - Lost Records: Bloom & Rage - ready to talk about why their time working on Life is Strange ended.

Much has changed for Don't Nod over the past decade, with the original Life is Strange team now an ocean away and under a brand new roof at the recently-established Don't Nod Montreal. Their time with Life is Strange is long over, following the conclusion of Life is Strange 2 at the end of 2019. Just over a year later, Eurogamer reported that Deck Nine Games, developer of the excellent Life is Strange prequel Before the Storm, was now the series' main developer - and it was indeed this studio that made 2021's enjoyable Life is Strange: True Colors.

Silent Hill: The Short Message – First Hands-On Impressions

4 months 2 weeks ago

[Editor's Note: This article contains references to themes such as teenage suicide, self-harm and bullying. Reader discretion is advised.]

Silent Hill: The Short Message is a brand new game in the storied psychological horror series Silent Hill, announced and released today as a free download for PlayStation 5. I (Daniel) played the full game from start to finish ahead of its surprise release, along with my IGN Japan colleague Koji Fukuyama, and both of us found a lot to enjoy – and even more to ponder. This article is a mix of both of our impressions.

This compact two-hour first-person game centres on teenage protagonist Anita as she searches for her missing friend Maya in a spooky abandoned building. The game makes effective use of its themes of suicide, self-harm, bullying and isolation to create a feeling of genuine dread, bringing the central themes of early games in the series entries into a modern perspective, while offering a sensitive portrayal of its subject matter that never feels exploitative or crude.

That said, the game does include some fairly graphic scenes that may be too much for those who are sensitive to such themes, so I would advise caution. The game is rated 15 and up, and I’d say it’s a hard 15, and definitely not suitable for younger players.

Square Enix Announces Merger of Tokyo RPG Factory Subsidiary

Square Enix announced the merger of the Tokyo RPG Factory subsidiary. The company will take over the rights and obligations of the subsidiary after the dissolution of the studio on January 31, 2024. [Thanks, Gamebiz!]

The studio was originally founded in 2014 under the “Tokyo Dream Factory” name by then Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda. The company was a subsidiary of Square Enix. Later, it was officially established as in June 2015.

The studio is behind the development of I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, and Oninaki, which released in 2016, 2017, and 2019 respectively. The first two titles are turn-based RPGs inspired by the SNES/Super Famicom era of RPGs, and the games share gameplay and story elements from titles like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy X. Meanwhile, Oninaki is an action-RPG with a focus on the theme of life, death, and rebirth.

Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin blends Nioh's combat with Assassin's Creed-style exploration

4 months 2 weeks ago

Well look at that, a new trailer for Rise of the Rōnin - the fancy samurai action-RPG from Ninja Gaiden household Team Ninja. Set in 19th century Japan's Bakumatsu era, the game is a mixture of open-ended exploration, sneaking and agile traversal that puts me heavily in mind of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series. Unlike most Assassin's Creeds, however, this one has a pretty in-depth, rigorous melee combat system, with bosses that look like they're going to grind my gears no end. Will it be as vicious as Nioh 2? I'd better start stocking up on comfort food.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake Combat Reveal Trailer Doesn’t Inspire Confidence

4 months 2 weeks ago

Silent Hill 2 Remake Combat

During the January 2024 Sony State of Play, a new trailer for the much-awaited Silent Hill 2 remake was released, finally giving viewers a taste of what they can expect from combat. I watched the footage, puzzled as to what I saw. A part of me understands why changes were made — a new audience doesn't want to deal with "bad" controls — but I feel like something was lost as James Sunderland staggered enemies by shooting them in the knees or blasting a Bubble Head Nurse in the head with a shotgun.

Image via Konami

While Team Silent may or may not have intentionally made the combat in those first four Silent Hill games clunky, it served a greater purpose within the Survival Horror genre. A majority of the most popular Japanese Horror games of the time functioned on Tank Controls, which arguably isn't great and requires some getting used to.

Bloober's Silent Hill 2 remake gets fresh airing in combat-focused trailer

4 months 2 weeks ago

It's been a good long while since we've seen anything concrete from Konami and developer Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake, but the project has now received a fresh airing as part of Sony's latest PlayStation State of Play showcase, this time with a trailer focusing on the game's "improved and modernised" combat.

Combat perhaps isn't the first thing you'd expect Konami's marketing material to dwell on given it's quite some way down the list of elements that made the original Silent Hill 2 such a beloved horror experience, but the trailer does, in fairness, hang back a whole 40 seconds before switching out the atmospheric meandering for bat-swinging, shotgun-blasting action.

Additionally, it's reassuring, and perhaps even a little surprising, to see just how closely Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake hews to aesthetic of the original 2001 PlayStation 2 game - it certainly doesn't look like we're in for a radical tonal reinvention here.
