Midnight Fight Express will punch it this August, has a demo available now

1 year 10 months ago

Midnight Fight Express features brutal violence and people in animal masks, prompting unflattering comparisons to the streamlined and propulsive Hotline Miami. Look past that comparison and I think there's more to like about it on its own terms, however. Check out the new trailer below, which also delivers news of its release date and a playable demo.

The Last Of Us 2 Has Sold More Than 10 Million Copies

1 year 10 months ago

The future of the Last of Us franchise is certainly safe and secure, since Naughty Dog announced today that The Last of Us Part 2 crossed 10 million copies sold earlier this year.

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, who also served as co-creative director on The Last of Us Part 2, took to the stage of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest to announce the impressive milestone. Druckmann also suggested that the success has allowed the studio to take on more projects than ever.

"And that kind of support, that kind of success, we're so grateful to our fans. It has allowed us to grow as a studio and now we can take on multiple projects, more than we've ever had at the same time," said Druckmann.

Of course, we've already known about some of these projects and many were even spoken of today. Ahead of the Summer Game Fest presentation, a remake of the original Last of Us title called The Last of Us Part I was leaked before being confirmed for a September release by Druckmann onstage. Additionally, Druckmann announced that the multiplayer mode that Naughty Dog spun off from The Last of Us Part 2 has become a standalone multiplayer game on a scale that rivals even Naughty Dog's biggest single-player titles. We should expect to hear more about Naughty Dog's multiplayer take on The Last of Us next year.

Day of the Devs: Everything Announced and Shown, Including Choo-Choo Charles and Planet of Lana

1 year 10 months ago

Day of the Devs just wrapped up, leaving us with a heck of a lineup of fascinating indie games slated for the coming months and years. We saw a total of 16 games over the last hour, some of them from known indie studios such as the folks behind Monument Valley, and others the debut games from new studios.

We’ve got a roundup below of everything we just saw, so if you’re looking for the next indie darling to fall in love with, this is the place to check:

Time Flies

The newly-announced Time Flies explores the limited time we all have here on earth, from the perspective of a fly. The time the fly has to live is dependent on where you are in the world, converting years to seconds – so if life expectancy in the United States is about 77 years, players in the US will have 77 seconds to live. During that time, you can try to complete items on a bucket list (similar to Untitled Goose Game’s To Do list) such as “Learn an Instrument,” “Go on Tour,” or “Get Rich.” Time Flies is made by Michael Frei and Raphaël Munoz, and is coming to PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC/Mac sometime this year.

Everything that happened at Day Of The Devs 2022

1 year 10 months ago

Day Of The Devs is probably my favourite part of the summer games jamboree every year because it does wonders for the visibility of indie games and their developers. Slotting in snugly right after Geoff regaled us with the Summer Game Fest stream, this year’s Day Of The Devs showcase marked the tenth anniversary. Tim Schafer and friends revealed more about some stonking looking indies from places as far apart as the Netherlands, Japan and Argentina. It was lovely to see some solo devs featured too, such as Madison Karrh with Birth, a point-and-click puzzler about loneliness, and Billy Basso’s beautiful pixel-art Metroidvania Animal Well.

Among Us Items Arrive In Fortnite After Earlier Tease

1 year 10 months ago

Epic is adding new Among Us crossover items today in Fortnite as part of a collaboration teased in 2021. With this new collaboration, players can have their favorite Among Us crewmate as back bling in Fortnite.

We got our first look at the new Among Us items, a customizable back bling and an emote, from Fortnite content creator Shiina.

While the Among Us items will debut in the Fortnite Item Shop at a later date, players can get them as soon as today by buying Among Us on the Epic Games Store. Players who have already purchased the game on EGS previously will unlock the items right away when they next log into Fortnite.

Epic previously came under fire for "lifting so much from indie darling Among Us" when making their Among Us-like mode Impostors. It's not a limited-time mode but a long-term addition to the game, even contributing to Fortnite lore.

Summer Game Fest Returns in 2023 With In-Person Event

1 year 10 months ago

Right at the end of 2022’s Summer Game Fest Live (or Keigh3 as some call it), Geoff Keighley predictably announced that the press conference would return in 2023. There was one twist however: the next iteration will be an in-person and digital event.

Details of exactly how this would look are forthcoming. It would presumably include a live audience for the presentation itself, as well as a “show floor” for press and fans to try game demos or talk with developers, although those details remain to be seen.

The current incarnation of Summer Game Fest is technically still ongoing. Immediately after the main event, Day of the Devs presented a slew of indie titles. It will conclude with the Xbox and Bethseda showcase on Sunday, June 12. One would imagine that an in-person version of the events could also incorporate multiple other presentations, as well as a more traditional convention floor.

The prospect of in-person brings up the specter of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While conventions or public events often introduce mask mandates and/or vaccine requirements, this has frequently proven insufficient to stem the tide of illness. Many conventions has also forgone or reduced such requirements, resulting in more sickness. The state of the pandemic after a full calendar year is obviously a massive unknown, but it is still difficult not to wonder about the safety of such an event.

While the ESA has said E3 will return in 2023, Geoff Keighley’s games media empire seems posed to take the throne. However, ongoing concerns about in-person events may stand in the way.

Get a proper look at some tasty Warhammer 40,000: Darktide gameplay

1 year 10 months ago

Oi, guv! There's a cracking, cockney, knees-up of a trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide here that shows off some gameplay in the most detail yet. Take a look:

For the curious, Darktide is a spiritual follow-up to Fatshark's previous four-player co-op games, Warhammer: Vermintide and Vermintide 2, which are a bit like medieval Left 4 Deads but with giant rats. This one's set in the even grimmer and darker universe of the year 40K.

And it's all quite supremely 40K, by the looks of things. We get a nice glimpse of the four classes - Psyker, Veteran, Zealot, Ogryn - blowing apart the hordes of cultists-cum-space-zombies in different ways.

1 year 10 months ago

The Last of Us HBO adaptation is inching closer and closer to completion, and during Summer Game Fest 2022, we got our first look at a shot from the show, as well as some new details about its cast.

Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, the actors that portray Joel and Ellie respectively in the games, are going to appear in the HBO adaptation. Speaking on stage, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann says that these aren't cameos, but instead "real roles" that will be important to the story. Baker and Johnson aren't reprising their roles, however, with Pedro Pascal playing Joel and Bella Ramsey playing Ellie.

The first shot from the series was revealed on stage, showing Pascal and Ramsey in their roles.

First shot from HBO's The Last of Us

The series is being helmed by Chernobyl creator and writer, Craig Mazin, with Druckmann also acting as co-creator, writer, and director. Summer Game Fest Live 2022 Biggest Games & Announcements

1 year 10 months ago

Summer Game Fest Live 2022, the big livestreamed event hosted by Geoff Keighley, took place earlier today, and as expected, it featured a wide variety of games and announcements. While, as Keighley said in advance, it wasn't heavy on a ton of brand-new reveals, it did still pack in some surprises (along with confirmation of a big leak concerning The Last of Us).

You can rewatch the stream in its entirety below, but we've also rounded up all of the highlights--the biggest news, announcements, and games from Summer Game Fest Live. This includes a returning Street Fighter 6 character, the first Callisto Protocol gameplay, a look at a campaign mission from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and even more Last of Us news than that leak revealed.

Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter 6 was just showcased during PlayStation State of Play earlier this month, and exclusive new gameplay footage was shown during Summer Game Fest Live. "America's Hero" Guile is, naturally, returning, with his incredibly flat hairdo still intact despite the move to a more realistic art style. We get to see him absolutely annihilate Ryu, including using a ridiculously powerful special move that kicks him way into the air. It's coming in 2023 to PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

1 year 10 months ago

Today, during the Summer Game Showcase, Naughty Dog President Neil Druckmann unveiled some brand new information about HBO’s The Last of Us television series. During the presentation, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson were brought out to the stage, as it was revealed that the voice actors would actually be playing a part in the show, and it wouldn’t be Joel or Ellie.

While they are keeping what roles they’re playing under wraps, it was stated that Baker and Johnson will have real roles, not just cameo appearances. Alongside this news, Druckmann also shared that filming for the show wraps up tomorrow and that there is a picture he can share from the set, which you can see below.

The Last of Us HBO Max

In terms of the release date, he said, “It is closer than you might think,” but refused to budge when Keighley asked if it would be coming out in 2023. HBO’s The Last of Us was originally announced back in March 2020, with very little information about changes or similarities to the game coming out since then.

Warhammer 40K: Darktide looks like Vermintide in 40K alright, and that's just dandy

1 year 10 months ago

A new trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide fresh out of the Summer Game Fest gives another look at the heretic-smashing cooperative shooter from the makers of Warhammer: Vermintide and yup, it looks like Vermintide in 40K. And that's fine. I'm good with that. That's great, really. Vermintide is fun but I've no affinity for Warhammer Fantasy so yes, give me bolters and Inquisitors and Ogryns and sci-fi Gothic cathedrals. See for yourself below.

The New Last Of Us Multiplayer Experience Is A Standalone Title

1 year 10 months ago

Today’s Summer Game Fest presentation brought several small but important details coming to The Last of Us universe, including some details about what is now a standalone multiplayer title set within the post-apocalyptic setting.

Originally, a multiplayer component was planned for inclusion in the release of The Last of Us Part 2. But before that game released, Naughty Dog opted to cut that portion of the game and instead focus on the campaign. At the time, it was also clear that the multiplayer experience was likely still in the works, and was expanding in scope. Today’s reveal makes clear that expansion has broadened out to be its own full game.

The game has been in the works for roughly two years as of now. It includes a new cast of characters, though many of the tools those characters are using seem to be similar to those we saw in the campaign of The Last of Us Part 2; the characters wield rifles and Molotov cocktails even as chaos unfolds on the overgrown streets below them.

Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann was open in admitting that they would not be sharing extensive details on the project at this time, but did share a piece of concept art that showed survivors overlooking what appears to be the city of San Francisco.

We still have something of a wait before we’ll be able to play the game, as Druckmann implied we’d be seeing more of the project sometime next year in 2023.

HBO's The Last Of Us Features Appearances From Troy Baker And Ashley Johnson, New Image Revealed

1 year 10 months ago

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann took the stage at Summer Game Fest to reveal new details about HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us TV series.

First, he revealed a new still from the show, posted above, that reveals the first face shot of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the roles of Joel and Ellie, respectively. Prior to this, we’d only seen the characters from behind. The image comes from an episode directed by Druckmann himself, who describes the show as “the most authentic video game adaptation yet”.

Druckmann then brought Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who voice Joel and Ellie in the games, to reveal that the actors appear in the show in undisclosed roles.

The Last of Us is set to premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2023. The show is being helmed by Druckmann and Craig Mazin of Chernobyl fame.

Evil succumbs to a distressingly light hail of bullets in new Witchfire footage

1 year 10 months ago

As the Summer Game Fest machine churns ever onward, we got an extended look at Witchfire. I'm afraid I am now of the opinion that "dark fantasy first-person shooter" is one of the most underwhelming word combinations in the English language. But hey, it's a video, the game could be bananas good when it comes out, and I'm duty bound to tell you all about it in case you get really excited for it - and if you do, then good news, 'cos the video confirms it's coming to early access on the Epic Games Store soon (aiming for Q4 2022).

Highwater is the third game to expand the world of Golf Club Wasteland

1 year 10 months ago

First came Golf Club Wasteland, a post-apocalyptic sports game from Demagog Studios where the world's remaining elite jetted around golf courses on the ruined surface of Earth. Then, earlier this year, they announced The Cub, a side-scrolling platformer telling a parallel story of one of the poor souls left behind on our home planet while the rest of humanity buggered off to Mars. Now, Demagog seem to be expanding their Wasteland-verse with a third entry: Highwater. It's not clear how this one relates to the others just yet, but it does feature a rather lovely yellow lifeboat in a flooded cityscape. Check out the reveal trailer below.

The Last Of Us Standalone Multiplayer Game Confirmed

1 year 10 months ago

A standalone Last of Us multiplayer game is on the way, Naughty Dog has announced. The news was shared during Summer Game Fest Live, as TLOU director Neil Druckmann took to the stage to also confirm the leaked Last of Us PS5/PC remake from earlier in the day. That leak led fans to wonder if the enhanced version of the 2013 game would include its multiplayer mode, and now we know that, while it will not include multiplayer, Naughty Dog is working on a standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game with a brand-new story and cast of characters.

According to Druckmann, the game will offer Naughty Dog's "biggest online experience," seemingly corroborating reporter Jeff Grubb's belief that the game will be a live-service title. Apart from that statement and the concept art below depicting a San Francisco setting, Druckmann didn't share any additional information about the game. However, additional details will be coming sometime next year.

SGF Live also brought news on the Last of Us TV show bringing back key actors from the games.
