Midnight Fight Express Hands-On Preview: A Brawler That Oozes Cool

1 year 11 months ago

If you’re like me, then you've spent a lot of your time wishing you had Bruce Lee-level combat prowess that you could unleash upon endless waves of foolish challengers. Training to be that awesome sounds like a lot of work, but Midnight Fight Express helped me get a bit closer to that fantasy by absolutely nailing everything I’d want in a fast-paced, highly lethal, and fantastically challenging brawler. With an extensive set of unlockable skills and environments that begged to be an accomplice in my next felony assault, it was love at first dropkick to the face and I cannot wait to play more.

At the heart of any good brawling game is a sandbox that allows for creativity, and Midnight Fight Express has got that in spades. Every room I entered felt like an armory, with objects scattered around that could be thrown or swung at my opponents, and things to smash enemies against or throw them off of. In one section I found explosive items to toss at enemies that instantly turned them into pink giblets, and in another I used moving subway cars to make sure they were on track for an early death. Every time I stepped through a doorway to a new area, I felt a jolt of excitement wondering what playground of destruction awaited me on the other side, and in the eight levels I got to play that feeling never went away.

New Gotham Knights Trailer Shows Off A Variant Nightwing Suit And Combat Galore

1 year 11 months ago

A few weeks ago we got a 13-minute look at Gotham Knights, Warner Bros. Montreal's Arkham Knight follow-up that is scheduled to release on October 25. This lengthy look showed off traversal, combat, and a brief taste of what we could expect from the upgrade system. At today's Summer Game Fest, a new trailer debuted, giving us a deeper look at Nightwing's gameplay.

With Batman supposedly dead, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, and Red Hood have banded together to keep Gotham's streets safe. Nightwing was long an understudy of Batman and also trained as a trapeze artist as a child.  In the new footage, we see both of these influences in his fighting style. He's brutal at close range, can create distance with his acrobatic flexibility, and has gadgets galore at his disposal.

In most of the gameplay, he's in his traditional black and blue garb, but we also get a brief look at him in a different ninja-like suit, which you'll be able to craft by gathering specific components.

Gotham Knights is slated to release on PlayStation and Xbox consoles and also PC. I hope it lives up the Arkham series' legacy, but also hope the inclusion of cooperative play gives it a new identity that is every bit as enthralling.

1 year 11 months ago

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge made an appearance at the Summer Game Fest giving us a new trailer full of retro turtle action.

The new trailer provides a look at a fan-favorite character making an appearance, Casey Jones, who will be using his skills to clean up the Foot Clan alongside the Turtles.

We are also provided a look at the 6-player multiplayer mode which increases in difficulty to match the number of players in the group.

Casey’s balance of range, speed and power will make him an all-round threat. He’ll be able to swing through flanks of Foot Clan soldiers with his hockey stick in-hand, too. This differs from the other turtles who each have a strength in a particular stat. Leo is a balanced character, while April is all about power and speed, making her perfect for the DPS role in your team.

In our TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge hands-on preview, Features Editor Andrew McMahon said “Shredder’s Revenge is now one of my most anticipated games of 2022.”

Naughty Dog gives update on standalone The Last of Us multiplayer

1 year 11 months ago

We had been promised that a new The Last of Us multiplayer component would be coming, and now we have a little bit more information on it.

Its not much, but Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann has revealed a new piece of concept art (see the image above) for it and said it will be as big as any single-player game the team has done, if not bigger – which given the size of Part 2 is quite the claim!

This multiplayer will have its own storyline and it takes place in another part of the United States. Is that the Golden Gate Bridge we can see over there? Hmm. Why, yes. Yes, I think it is.

Naughty Dog Teases The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Mode, Will Have New Characters & Story Elements

1 year 11 months ago

Okay so everyone already saw the random The Last of Us Part I remaster for PS5 and PC coming a mile away, but what we didn’t see coming was a brand new multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II. During Summer Game Fest 2022, Neil Druckmann took to the stage to give us a little tease for the new multiplayer mode.

It’s not clear yet whether this will actually be a standalone title, or if it’ll be made available as DLC for The Last of Us Part II. For now, all we know is that the game will be set in San Francisco, and that it’ll feature a cast of new characters and will even have story elements.

It’s worth noting that the original The Last of Us also came with a unique multiplayer mode called Factions that blended stealth, scavenging and on-the-fly crafting, and brutal combat. However, that was a pure multiplayer mode that you’d play on the side, with no narrative to speak of. From what Druckmann has revealed, the new multiplayer mode will be much larger.

The Last of Us Part II is now available on PS5, and we’ll keep you updated as more info on the new multiplayer mode comes our way.

The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Has a Story, and Is 'As Big' as Other Naughty Dog Games

1 year 11 months ago

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckman revealed new details about the long-awaited standalone multiplayer game set in The Last of Us world during today's Summer Game Fest showcase.

Concept%20art%20from%20an%20upcoming%20The%20Last%20of%20Us%20standalone%20multiplayer%20game.

Originally supposed to be a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2, he explained that the team's ambition made it evolve into something far beyond that over the last two years. "This game is big," Druckman said. "It's as big as any of our single-player games that we've done, and in some ways bigger."

Alongside the concept art above, Druckman confirmed it will have a story of its own, though he also said "the way we're telling that story is very unique to this game." It will have "a brand new cast of characters" as well, and while its new location wasn't confirmed, the image shared looks like it could be set in San Francisco.

A final name and proper gameplay weren't shown, but Druckman said more details would be coming next year. The last time we heard about the project was late 2021, when Naughty Dog simply confirmed it was still coming.

Saints Row Boss Factory Trailer

Deep Silver Volition has revealed the Saints Row Boss Factory character creator and it’s now live on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and PC.

As the name implies, the Boss Factory is a character creator separate to download from the upcoming Saints Row reboot. However, it will attach to Saints Row because the character you create now can be used as your own in Saints Row when it launches August 23. In it, you can do quite a lot too. You can adjust your body type and size, add tattoos and other cosmetics, and so much more. It even appears you can play as your boss nude, or at least close to it.

Here’s what Deep Silver Volition has to say about the experience:

“Boss Factory is the name, makin’ Saints is the game. Create the best Boss in history – your Boss, with our (not blowing our own trumpet here but…) pretty damn impressive character customization. Nightingale Dives Into Realm Cards In New Trailer

Expanded base building! Calculating Automatons! Layers Of Fears looks a lot like a remaster of the first two games

1 year 11 months ago

Summer Game Fest just got scary with the announcement of psychological horror Layers Of Fears, the next instalment in Bloober Team’s jump-fest series that might really be a remaster, sort of? Bloober say it's the "psychedelic experience fans know and love" and has "an expanded plotline", so this doesn't sound like an entirely new game. The freshly revealed Layers Of Fears is being built in Unreal Engine 5. As such, the trailer makes for pleasantly unpleasant viewing.

Nightingale Gets a Longer Gameplay Look at Summer Game Fest

1 year 11 months ago

At Summer Game Fest today, we finally got a longer, more detailed look at Aaryn Flynn and Inflexion's upcoming survival game, Nightingale, including a detailed look at how players travel between different fae realms: by using realm cards.

The trailer emphasizes the importance of the survival elements of Nightingale, focusing first on keeping warm, dry, and fed. Once that's accomplished, players can start to look for a way to move to new realms by crafting items called realm cards using rare resources they might encounter in the world they're currently exploring.

The cards crafted and used can dictate certain properties of the realm they'll open the door to, allowing players some control over where they end up. These properties include environment type, weather patterns, resources, challenges, and more, and will procedurally generate a new realm based on those aspects.

We also got a brief look at other features such as crafting and combat, and a new enemy called the Automatons.

We've had a lot of questions about Nightingale since it was announced, and we've gotten a lot of answers from Flynn about its seemingly endless fae realms and its roots in BioWare storytelling. Nightingale is headed to PC via early access release sometime this year.

Bloober remaking Layers of Fear series into one "psychedelic horror chronicle"

1 year 11 months ago

Following a tiny tease last October, Bloober Team - the developer behind the psychedelic horror chills of The Medium, Observer, and Blair Witch - has finally unveiled its latest Layers of Fear project: a remake of the previous two games in the series (plus DLC) bundled into a single, connected package for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Layers of Fears, to give the new experience its official (and faintly ridiculous) name, has been co-developed with Anshar Studios, and sees the original Layers of Fear, its Inheritance DLC, and Layers of Fear 2 rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 to form what Bloober is calling a "psychological horror chronicle" - complete with new visuals, gameplay, and expanded plot lines.

Bloober says these new story elements will "cast a new light on the overarching narrative" as players face "spine-chilling madness that extends over generations."

Layers of Fears Is a 'Psychedelic Horror Chronicle' Made in Unreal Engine 5

1 year 11 months ago

Bloober Team has announced Layers of Fears, a "psychedelic horror chronicle" made in Unreal Engine 5 and coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in early 2023.

Announced at Summer Game Fest, the game is seemingly pitched somewhere between a remaster and a sequel. Bloober promises that it will 'build on the foundations' of the original Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear: Inheritance, and Layers of Fear 2, but will "include an expanded plotline and gameplay direction."

A trailer showed off what looked to be remade versions of scenes from all the Layers of Fear games, but it was hard to get a sense of what the gameplay changes might be, nor how they will be tied together. We'll be sure to ask Bloober Team what those might be when we can.

In a press release, Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno said: “We are bringing back a franchise that is really special for us, in a new form that will give players a truly fresh gaming experience and that will shed new light on the overall story. Our plan was to recreate the games, but we didn’t want to make it a simple collection of two remastered games. We’ve worked out a new approach, something that is maybe not yet obvious. But I can tell you there’s a reason why we called it Layers of Fear's'.”

The company has previously teased some kind of return to its Layers of Fear series, and said that it would be made using Unreal Engine 5. We awarded 2019's Layers of Fear 2 a 9/10 review, saying, "with unique puzzles and expert pacing, Layers of Fear 2 is a harrowing and consistently exciting endeavor."

American Arcadia's New Trailer Is On The Run

1 year 11 months ago

After an announcement in April, today’s Summer Game Fest presentation gave us a more in-depth look at American Arcadia, the new game from Out of the Blue Games, the makers of Call of the Sea.

Players control Trevor Hills, a resident of a strange city call Arcadia, a seemingly futuristic utopia (rooted in 1970s design sensibility) in which everything looks clean and progressive. However, the city’s pristine appearance is an illusion, as the entire thing is a reality TV show for people to watch from the outside, in which one’s popularity can tank and put your actual life at risk.

Trevor is on the run from the constant surveillance, leading to what looks like a number of frantic chase scenes. In some, he’s being watched by floating drones that are tracking and recording his movements. In another sequence, we see Trevor desperately trying to stay ahead of police or security that are trying to take him in. And in yet another gameplay moment, he makes a death-defying leap from a high platform dive into a pool far below.

As the trailer wraps up, the story pans out to someone apparently outside of Arcadia, looking at the domed city from its exterior, vowing to help get him out of there. In actuality, this brief sequence is representative of the other main pillar of gameplay, in which you control a 3D first-person experience that includes hacking and puzzles.

Saints Row: Boss Factory Lets You Create a Custom Character Before the Game Arrives

1 year 11 months ago

Volition has announced Saints Row: Boss Factory, a free app that lets you use the game's custom character creator to build your main character before the game arrives. It's out now.

Announced at Summer Game Fest, developer Volition revealed that Boss Factory would come to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC today.

The free app will allow you to use the full character creator (minus any items unlocked by progressing through the game) to save up to six character designs. Those designs can be created on any platform, and imported into the final game on any other platform. You can even save and share your charcater design with other players, who can then use it in their game.

Saint's Row has famously offered diverse character creators, and the new game promises to keep up that tradition, offering thousands of choices for your main character, known as the Boss. You'll be able to import your chosen creation into the final game when it launches on August 23.

Using the Boss Factory and importing a character comes with a bonus - you'll unlock two helmets to use in the game when you do. Until the game comes out, Volition will be creating curated galleries of bosses, and showing off the best and most upvoted creations on the Saints Row website.

Saints Row is a reboot of the over-the-top open-world series. In a recent preview, we said it looked like a fun throwback to the genre's past, saying "Volition’s reboot of the series looks a lot of fun, filled with the wackiness, carnage, and humour you’d expect."

One Piece Odyssey On Course For 2022 Release

1 year 11 months ago

Even though the manga is entering its final saga next month (with years of stories to go, though), there's plenty of One Piece content to consume in the near future. At Summer Game Fest, One Piece Odyssey, ILCA's upcoming JRPG featuring the Straw Hat Crew, had a debut trailer introducing the cast and showing off some of the environments players can expect to explore.

The trailer, which you can watch above, gives each confirmed Straw Hat a spotlight as their ship, the Thousand Sunny, rockets into the sky. They're up there because of a strange cloud that forms above the seas while a Knock Up Stream kicks the ship into the air before one of Franky's Coup De Burst propels them even closer to danger. Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Chopper, Franky, Robin, Brook, and Franky are all here, although new-ish-comer Jinbei is unfortunately nowhere to be seen.

As for in-game footage, we see some exploration of the world, and you can control more of the cast than just Monkey D. Luffy, so if you're a big Zorro, Sanji, or Chopper fan, you'll get to take direct control of them at some point.

Marvel's Midnight Suns: 7 Hands-On Takeaways

1 year 11 months ago

Marvel's Midnight Suns is poised to launch later this year (check out the latest Summer Game Fest trailer) after suffering a delay from its original spring release. The superhero RPG reimagines the events of the '90s "Rise of the Midnight Sons" comic event by joining Marvel's darker occult heroes, such as Blade, Magik, and Ghost Rider, with its heavy-hitters like Iron Man, Captain Marvel, and the newly revealed Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch. Players assume the role of the Hunter, an original customizable hero who serves as the key to taking down their parent and the game's villain: Lilith, mother of all demons.

We recently took a trip to Firaxis to play a few hours of Midnight Suns to see how it's come along since our cover story last year. After taking on Lilith's corrupted forces and battling Hydra, here are a few big takeaways.

The Card Combat Is Fun And Rewards Creativity

Some may see Midnight Suns as "XCOM but Marvel," but that couldn't be further from the truth. Firaxis describes the game as a turn-based role-playing adventure; the difference is that instead of selecting traditional commands, players use cards to dish out attacks, activate skills, and unleash special moves.

Summer Game Fest One Piece Odyssey Trailer Shows Gameplay

A new One Piece Odyssey trailer appeared during Summer Game Fest 2022, and this one focused on gameplay. It showed off some cutscenes, characters’ voice acting, and exploration of some areas. It also offered a tease of things to come.

In the stinger, a woman’s voice says, “This is a world created from your memories.”

Since announcing One Piece Odyssey, Bandai Namco’s been gradually showing more and more of it. For example, some screenshots showed how Eiichiro Oda’s designs for monsters are being brought to life in-game.

One Piece Odyssey will come to the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam in 2022. There’s no precise release window for it yet.
