Cheeky Steam Game Dares You To Risk Your Refund Window Or Die Trying

1 year 9 months ago

A new horror game on Steam has launched this week, and comes with an incredibly scary hook: a very slim chance of getting your money back. Refund Me If You Can has a simple gameplay loop, where you'll find yourself stuck in a maze and attempting to escape without being mauled by a monster that is constantly tracking you down.

As spotted by Rock, Paper, Shotgun, the game features dozens of paths, only one correct exit, and a warning to never stand in the same spot for longer than 45 seconds unless you want the maze-monster to get its claws on you. If you can escape in under two hours and you don't forget to visit Steam in the two weeks from the date that you purchased the game, then you're within the Steam terms of service to ask for a refund.

Refund Me If You Can only costs $4 though, so if you can live with losing one Starbucks coffee for the day, then perhaps it's worth forgoing the refund process for a game with a cheeky title and peer pressure energy. For those times when you do find yourself wanting to get your cash back after a game has failed to grab you, Steam's refund process is one of the best around. As long as you haven't sunk more than two hours into a game and less than two weeks have passed, you can get your cash back or store credit within a week of filing your claim.

It's something that console giants such as Microsoft and Sony hardly ever do, with the most noticeable exception being Cyberpunk 2077 after it had a disastrous launch on Xbox and PlayStation back in 2020.

Immortals Fenyx Rising reportedly getting Polynesian-themed spin-off

1 year 9 months ago

Following reports earlier this year that Ubisoft was in the early stages of developing a sequel to its enjoyable Greek-mythology-themed open-world adventure Immortals Fenyx Rising, new claims have surfaced suggesting this may in fact be a spin-off, rather than a full-blown sequel, and one given a new Hawaiian Polynesian theme.

The original Immortals Fenyx Rising, which released in 2020, followed the adventures of the titular Fenyx after being washed ashore on the colourful Golden Isle, home to a pantheon of Greek mythology inspired gods. What followed was a generally enjoyable blend of open-world exploration, platforming, combat, and puzzling - all narrated by the perpetually bickering twosome of Prometheus and Zeus - whose biggest flaw (aside from its rather exhaustingly stuff-saturated map) was its over-familiarity.

"Blame Covid, blame budgets, blame Ubisoft, blame the paradoxically thrifty, endlessly repurposing way the publisher makes all its huge, expansive, generous games," Christian Donlan wrote in his review, "but Immortals never really finds its own voice until the very end."

Subway Surfers Creators On Making Its First Game Without Monetization

1 year 9 months ago

Sybo Games' Subway Surfers is one of the biggest games in the mobile space. Along with having millions of players, Subway Surfers can also be seen in arcades and has received an animated adaptation on YouTube. For Sybo's latest project, however, it eschewed the free-to-play formula that previously led the developer to success, for an Apple Arcade game based on its Subway Surfers intellectual property.

Subway Surfers Tag is not an endless runner like its predecessor, but rather an arena game in which you ride hoverboards around small levels, fighting robots and pulling off tricks to keep your board's battery alive. GameSpot recently spoke with game director Eoin O'Doherty and Sybo CEO Mathias Gredal Nørvig about how this project came about, what it's like to make a more traditional video game with an ending, what's going on with the animated show's 12th episode, and what it's like to be part of a studio whose small game turns into a massive success.

GameSpot: Subway Surfers Tag is different than I expected. Why the departure from the core endless runner idea of Subway Surfers?

I am not good at The Final Earth 2

1 year 9 months ago

I like a building game that doesn't need constant babysitting. I also like one where you get to be a bit creative and build according to your whims as much as to necessity. The Final Earth 2 is an ant farm kind of game that places very few limits on what you can build where, and lets you cheaply restructure as needed even if you mess it up.

The idea is you build vertically, with each building taking up a block, and your people freely travelling through all of them to get to work or home or the pub. Everyone else who plays it seems to build enormous, elaborate, impressively well organised structures that are even kind of beautiful. I build a random pile of crap. I am absolutely rubbish at it.

How Many Scary Movies Are There? Answered

1 year 9 months ago

There was a time in the noughties when almost every other film had the “Movie” moniker tagged on at the end. From Epic Movie to Disaster Movie to Superhero Movie, there were a cavalcade of parody flicks that poked fun at whatever was top of the pops at any given time. This brings us to perhaps the most lucrative and successful of the bunch: the Scary Movie franchise.

If you’re here, you’re likely wondering how many Scary Movies are there. Worry not, as we’ll get to the bottom of this conundrum right now. So, without further ado, let’s jump in, shall we?

How Many Scary Movie Films Are There? Answered

We’ll cut right to the chase: In total, there are five Scary Movie films in the horror spoof franchise. Below, we’ll list off each of them, along with their respective release year:

  • Scary Movie, 2000
  • Scary Movie 2, 2001
  • Scary Movie 3, 2003
  • Scary Movie 4, 2006
  • Scary Movie 5, 2013

What Are the Scary Movie Films About?

Essentially, the Scary Movie series are parody films that homage to whatever hit movies are the du jour at the time of release. For example, the first Scary Movie mainly parodied Scream, and I Know What You Did Last Summer as they were films that were popular at the time and had released recently.

That said, sometimes the Scary Movie films wouldn’t just parody horror pics. In fact, Scary Movie 5 even included skits about the erotic film, Fifty Shades of Grey, and the historical drama, The Help.

Twitch rolls out shared ban tool for streamers

1 year 9 months ago

Twitch has introduced a new tool that lets streamers share and ban malicious users from more than one community at a time.

The new Shared Ban Info feature lets streamers at Partner, Affiliate or mutual follows share their ban information with one another, which includes users that have been banned from chatting in streams.

This means if a streamer sees a banned user on a peer's information, they can flag that username in case said user appears in their stream. They won't be banned, but will be marked as a preventive measure so that moderators can keep an eye out for any potential bad behaviour.

Street Fighter 6 Reveals Jamie’s Music Theme “Mr. Top Player” With New Video

1 year 9 months ago

Today Capcom released a new video related to the upcoming fighting game Street Fighter 6.

Like with similar videos we don’t see any gameplay, but we can enjoy the reveal of the music theme dedicated to the brand new character Jamie, titled “Mr. Top Player”.”

This is the fourth music reveal made for the game, as a few weeks ago Capcom published the official music video for the main theme, titled Not on the Sidelines, followed by the themes for Chun-Li and new-ish character Luke, and the theme for Ryu.

You can check the track out in the video below.

Jamie is the first fully-new character added to Street Fighter 6. Unlike Luke, who appeared as the last DLC character in Street Fighter V, the new game is his official playable debut.

He’s a drunken fist practitioner, a style that has always been very popular in fighting games, but for some reason, never appeared in Street Fighter. His style is the Chinese variety of the drunken fist style, Zuì Quán.

You Can Toss Furniture As Lady Dimitrescu In Resident Evil Village's Mercenaries Update

1 year 9 months ago

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village Gold Edition arrives in October and introduces the Winters’ story expansion. This content update includes an expanded version of the game’s Mercenaries mode, introducing Chris Redfield, Karl Heisenberg, and Lady Dimitrescu as playable characters. A new trailer shows off each of their abilities and how players can tear through hordes of monstrosities as this powerful trio.

The update, called The Mercenaries Additional Orders, adds two new stages, Bloody Village and Bloody River, and lets players mow down adversaries such as the weapon-strapped Chris Redfield. When his arsenal of guns isn’t enough, the former BSAA agent packs a powerful punch that can have foes reeling, and activating his Onslaught gauge grants him an absurd speed boost, letting him move and reload in the blink of an eye. When all else fails, Chris can call in support strikes by pinpointing targets with his locator.

If you want to get your Magneto on, Heisenberg can use his electromagnetic powers to toss buzzsaws and other objects, channel lightning, and smash foes with his massive hammer. He can also call in his Soldat Jets to lend a hand.

God Of War Sand Sculpture Spotted On Taiwan Beach

1 year 9 months ago

The recent release date reveal of God of War Ragnarok has left many fans happily riding the hype train at full blast toward November 9. In an unbelievable display of skill and appreciation, one such person has been spotted using the sand on a beach in Taiwan to sculpt a stunning recreation of the upcoming game's cover art.

Reddit user spqp shared an image of an unnamed sculptor working diligently on the massive sculpture of Kratos and Atreus at Fulong Beach in Taiwan. According to spqp, the beach was being used as part of an exhibition, but this was the only piece of God of War art on display.

An unnamed artist sculpts a Kratos and Atreus sculpture at Fulong Beach, Taiwan.

While the lower portion of the sculpture appears unfinished at the time of the photo, the level of detail across the board is downright staggering. Kratos' beard and the fur on the father and son duo's armor prove that the artist is dedicated to meticulousness. With so much to admire already, we can only hope pictures will someday emerge of the fully completed sand art.

Inazuma Eleven New Game Gets Renamed to Victory Road of Heroes

1 year 9 months ago

Inazuma Eleven Victory Road of Heroes

Inazuma Eleven: Great Road of Heroes has received a new name after news about its development went silent for a long time. Level-5 revamped its website and blog while revealing that it has renamed the new Inazuma Eleven game to Victory Road of Heroes. The name change also came with a large overhaul of the game's storyline.

While the green-haired Unmei Sasanami will still be the new game's protagonist, the revamped Story Mode will focus on depicting his own story. The main storyline will have Unmei gather members for a soccer club at a new school in Nagasaki with an all-new cast of characters. Level-5 will still retain the promised feature of recruiting characters from prior Inazuma Eleven entries, but players will do that in a separate Chronicle Mode.

Level-5 also promised more versatility in the new game's controls and displays. All platform versions will allow players to choose between horizontal and vertical play fields. Mobile devices and undocked Switches will also have a screen orientation option. The Nintendo Switch version will have the most versatile control scheme where players can utilize both the controller and touchscreen.

If you did take up the challenge like RPS vid-bud Liam did then you’d have two hours to beat the game, and two weeks from purchase to claim your refund. It didn't go well for Liam, as you can see in the video below.

GTA Online: The Criminal Enterprises Will Bring Oft-Requested Changes

1 year 9 months ago

On July 26, the newest expansion for GTA Online, The Criminal Enterprises, will release. Alongside it are a number of improvements and changes, many requested by players through the GTA Feedback website.

Starting with this update, GTA Online players will be able to engage in business activities via private, Invite Only sessions. You can register as a VIP, CEO, or MC President within Invite Only, Crew, and Friend sessions. All business owners can still sell their wares on public sessions.

The update will also bring various vehicle enhancement changes. Vehicles which can attend the LS Car Meet can now be equipped with Low Grip Tires. The mechanic will deliver ordered vehicles faster. You will no longer be charged money for destroying another player's Weaponized Personal Vehicle, allowing players to defend themselves without punishment. You can also now own up to 10 properties, increasing potential garage space up to 20 vehicles.

As for more general updates, various quality-of-life improvements will come with the update. You can now jog inside The Diamond Casino & Resort, The Music Lockers, and nightclubs. You can also now purchase max ammo for all weapons with a single click in the interaction menu. You can easily hang up the phone if a contact bores, rather than having to wait until the call is over to hang up. Payouts have generally increased across game modes and missions.

You can read the full list of enhancements below or on Rockstar's website.

Guerrilla Games Is Shutting Down Online Servers For Killzone, RIGS

1 year 9 months ago

Guerrilla Games has today announced that online servers for a number of its games will shut down on August 12.

The studio behind Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West shared the news today on Twitter, stating that online servers for Killzone: Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall--including Intercept Mode--and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League will be closing down on this date.

Guerrilla added that online features and online multiplayer modes for the games will cease on this day as well. However, single-player offline modes will still be available to players who already own the games.

The developer didn't give any reasoning behind the sudden decision to shut down servers for the select number of its games. Killzone Shadow Fall launched in 2013 for PS4, while Killzone: Mercenary was released on PSVita the same year. These are the most-recent console titles to be released for the Killzone franchise before RIGS: Mechanized Combat League was released on PlayStation VR in 2016.

The Last Of Us Part 1 Gets A New Permadeath Mode And More Than 60 Accessibility Features

1 year 9 months ago

The Last of Us Part 1 developer Naughty Dog has revealed more details on how the game has been remade for PS5 and PC in a new deep-dive video. While the core gameplay is essentially the same, players can expect graphical upgrades, new features, and enhancements that make the game more accessible.

Some of the new features outlined in a PS Blog post include a new permadeath mode, a speedrun mode, an updated photo mode, unlockable costumes for Joel and Ellie, and a model-viewer mode.

On the technical side, The Last of Us Part I can render in native 4K at a targeted 30fps or a dynamic 4K at a targeted 60fps display mode. The added power of the PS5 means that environments have denser physics with tons of "bumpables and chipables" that translate into gunfire ripping concrete and other objects apart more accurately.

According to social media director Sid Shuman, the game also benefits from more convincing character animations, AI upgrades that make partners avoid enemies more authentically, and a seamless transition from cinematics to gameplay.

Guerrilla Announces Shutdown of Servers for Killzone: Shadow Fall and More

Guerrilla has announced that it will be shutting down multiplayer servers for three games on August 12. The games are Killzone: Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall, and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League.

"On 12 August 2022, online servers for Killzone: Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall (including Intercept Mode) and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League will shut down," Guerrilla says in a Tweet. "Online features (including online multiplayer modes) will cease on that date. Single player offline modes remain available."

Killzone: Mercenary first launched in September 2013 exclusively on the PlayStation Vita. The game's servers went down briefly back in 2020 without any advance notice or reason given, but they were eventually restored. However, they'll be closing for good soon.

Killzone Shadow Fall was released in November 2013 for PlayStation 4. Last year, Killzone’s website was “retired” but did not affect any online multiplayer functions at the time.

Why TwitchCon's Drag Showcase was so important

1 year 9 months ago

For many, TwitchCon Amsterdam was a chance for the streaming community to meet each other, chat with brands, and watch some esports tournaments - notably Twitch Rivals.

But it was the event's drag showcase that was really the talk of the convention. Capping off the first day, the TwitchCon Drag Showcase was the first event of its kind and saw over 60,000 people watching in the centre's Glitch Theatre and streaming online - many of whom had never seen a drag show before.

Not only was the drag showcase the epicentre of LGBT+ representation at the convention, it was an opportunity to highlight the diversity of talent on Twitch. There's far more to the platform than just playing video games, even if that's done in makeup and a wig.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series and the problem with leaks

1 year 9 months ago

It’s kind of remarkable how little we really know about Nvidia’s next gaming graphics cards, the RTX 40 series. AMD are openly working on next-gen, RDNA 3-based Radeon GPUs, and Intel are gearing up for the full launch of their Arc Alchemist cards before the end of summer – yet there’s not been so much as a single presentation slide on Nvidia’s wares. Not the kind of hype-building you’d expect, given how many of the current generation’s best graphics cards have GeForce badges.

Arriving to fill that info void are, inevitably, leaks. If you don’t regularly hang out in PC hardware circles, know that there’s a veritable cottage industry of in-the-know insiders: anonymous but widely known tipsters like Greymon55 and kopite7kimi, who’ve shared enough accurate details on previous GPU and CPU launches that at least some of their sources are solid. Recently, unannounced Nvidia cards like the RTX 4070, RTX 4080 and especially the RTX 4090 have become this industry’s hottest commodities, meaning leakers are also the primary source of GeForce details for the gaming tech world at large.

Batgirl Takes Center Stage In New Gotham Knights Trailer

1 year 9 months ago

Warner Bros. Montreal's character spotlights have given us detailed looks at Nightwing and Robin, and now we get a good look at Batgirl's combat prowess in Gotham Knights. In the trailer above, we see her acrobatic maneuvers make short work of a gang. The footage also shows what appears to be a boss fight and a couple of alternate skins that players can unlock for Barbara Gordon.

Slated to release on October 25 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, Gotham Knights tells the story of a Batman-less superhero world and shows how his wards rise to take his place. The playable characters are Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Batgirl. You can play whoever you want, and it won't disrupt the game's cooperative play. Warner Bros. allows two Batgirls to run together, should players wish to attain an Elseworlds vibe.

The skins shown in the video will likely need to be unlocked by finding blueprints and acquiring the proper crafting materials to build them.

Following the success of Rocksteady's Arkham series and Warner Bros. Montreal's contribution, Gotham Knights has enormous shoes to fill. Here's hoping it's every bit as good as the titles mentioned. We need another great Arkham-like game.

The upcoming free update is scheduled to go live at 6PM PT / 11PM ET / 7PM GMT and will include a number of new features including the ability for players to use the motion of their legs to kick the soccer ball in-game.

In 4v4 and 1v1 Soccer matches, players will be able to use a Joy-Con controller and a Leg Strap accessory, which are available in the physical version of the game or sold separately, to score goals using the kicking motion in real life. The Nintendo Switch Sports update doesn't just address Leg Strap players; it will also allow new moves in Volleyball, such as the Slide Attack and Rocket Serve. The feature will also support games such as Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara.

Aside from the motion control support feature, the game is also getting the new S Rank and ∞ Rank in the online Pro League mode. Players will be able to easily join Friend Matches using each other's Room IDs to play together.

Nintendo is also planning on adding Golf to Nintendo Switch Sports later this year, but a release date has yet to be announced. The update will be free, downloadable DLC.

Dragon Ball The Breakers Release Date Trailer Teases Frieza

1 year 9 months ago

It's time for some hell with Cell (and Frieza). Dragon Ball: The Breakers has a release date, and it's launching soon. A Tweet from the official account confirmed that Bandai Namco's open-map Saiyan survival simulator launches on October 14, 2022.

The announcement also confirmed the presence of universal ruler Lord Frieza as one of the playable villains via a trailer.

https://twitter.com/DBTB_EN/status/1550118401992888320

The trailer takes place on the planet Namek, where a player character attempts to save a trapped Namekian child. Seen through the telltale projection of a Scouter, the player briefly channels Son Goku's power to deliver a blow. It doesn't work, and Frieza in his first form emerges from the smoke. Gameplay footage reveals that Frieza will transition through his first four forms over the course of a Dragon Ball: The Breakers match, with the more slender Super Frieza being effectively invincible.

The trailer also promoted a pair of limited physical releases of Dragon Ball: The Breakers. The base game is digital-only, through pre-orders unlock the Android 18 Transphere (enabling transformation into Android 18) and Scouter (Blue) cosmetic accessory. The Special Edition comes with the game on disc or cartridge (or digital code for PC), as well as a costume, victory pose, and a Yellow Dragon vehicle skin. The Limited Edition pack comes with all of the Special Edition and pre-order content, and adds a steelbook case, a set of stickers featuring the Raiders, a green Potara accessory, and a physical Cell Shell figure.
