An ode to video game statues

1 year 9 months ago

Of the myriad objects in games, statues seem to be among the most frivolous. You can talk to or fight with beings of flesh and blood. You can explore buildings. You can climb or cut down trees, maybe even build a house with its timber. With a regular statue, the most exciting thing you can do on a good day is maybe walk around it. Why then are so many games scattered with statues so intricately designed and so prominently displayed that they distract the eye?

It is maybe one of the fundamentals of life that if you really want to draw attention, you splurge on something that has next to no practical value. A fancy sport car is well and good, but a giant jewel or a triumphal arch is better. “No practical value” doesn’t mean, of course, that these things have no use in a broader sense. It is precisely the void of any practical purpose which opens up spaces for meaning. Grand but useless things talk; they convey social and cultural importance.

Statues, then, whether in real life or virtual worlds, are uniquely suited for drawing our eyes and for provoking the question: what does it mean? What is this doing here, in this particular spot? Who put it there, why, and how long ago?

Trials Of Osiris Rewards This Week In Destiny 2 (July 22-26)

1 year 9 months ago

The Iron Banner has officially ended in Destiny 2's Season of the Haunted, which means that every weekend from here on out will see the game's toughest multiplayer competition, the Trials of Osiris. Here's where you'll be playing this weekend and what special weapons you can earn if you manage to go flawless.

The Trials of Osiris begins with the daily reset on Friday, so we'll update this article once it kicks off.

Trials weapons now carry the Alacrity Origin Trait. It gives you increased aim assist, reload speed, stability, and range on your Trials guns when you're the last living member of a fireteam or running solo. You can also choose to swap to the Crucible Origin Trail, One Quiet Moment, which greatly enhances your gun's reload speed when you reload while out of combat.

As always, Trials be available from Friday's daily reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET until the weekly reset at the same time the following Tuesday. During that time, you can also pay a visit to Xur to see what Exotics he's selling. Make sure to pay a visit to Saint-14 in the Tower to pick up a Trials card, which will dictate certain bonuses (such as whether you get bonus rewards at certain milestones or if a loss will be forgiven).

Trials of Osiris is a weekend PvP mode that runs from the daily reset on Friday until the weekly reset on Tuesday, giving you four days to take part. Your goal in the Trials is for you and the other two players in your fireteam to achieve a "Flawless" run, in which you win seven matches without losing any.

Where Is Xur Today? (July 22-26) - Destiny 2 Xur Location And Exotic Items Guide

1 year 9 months ago

It's the first weekend of Destiny 2's yearly Solstice summertime celebration, and that makes it a great time to visit Xur to stock up on Exotics that'll help you fight through the EAZ activity and upgrade your new Candescent armor. Here's where you can find Xur this weekend and what Exotics he's selling.

Xur arrives with the daily reset on Friday, so we'll update this article when he lands in the Solar System.

Xur is present every weekend in Destiny 2, starting with the daily reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET each Friday. His exact location is always a mystery when he first arrives, as he is not listed on the map, and for novice players, he can be easy to miss. However, there are a set number of locations where he takes up residence, including the Tower Hangar area, on Nessus in Watcher's Grave, and in the Winding Cove area of the EDZ.

Alongside changes in his location, Xur's inventory also rotates weekly. That means it's worth visiting him each time to check out his new weapons and rolls on Exotic and Legendary armor. You can visit him any time between his arrival Friday and the weekly reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET the following Tuesday when Xur departs the Solar System.

Forza Horizon 5: Hot Wheels Review

1 year 9 months ago

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: a world of death-defying, die cast-inspired racing on life-sized toy tracks. A freeway-scale jumble of giant orange raceways, jumps, and loops across which you spill the contents of a dozen of the world’s greatest car museums. Actually you’ve definitely heard it before, because Playground Games did the same thing not all that long ago, in 2017’s much-loved Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels expansion. Sadly, that’s been delisted for some time now, so we’re all fortunate that Playground is putting the pedal to the Mattel all over again for its first expansion for Forza Horizon 5. Granted, driving supersized toy cars isn’t as surprising and novel as it was the first time around, but with the power of Forza Horizon 5 behind it and a progression system that pushes you to play with every toy in the box, it’s better than ever.

Who Is House Blackfyre in Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon?

1 year 9 months ago

If you are a longtime fan of the Game of Thrones book series, you may have read about the infamous House Blackfyre. But, even though they are a crucial part of the lore, the show didn’t have enough time to establish its storyline. So, who is House Blackfyre, and how do they connect to Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon?

House Blackfyre in Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon Explained

While looking over the trailer of Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon, you can spot the mighty sword called “Blackfyre” in the hands of King Viserys Targaryen. The history of this weapon predates back to when Aegon the Conqueror wielded it in several battles with the incredible power of its Valyrian steel.

After the sword was passed down to the next generation, it ended up in the hands of Daemon Waters (also known as Daemon Blackfyre), a bastard son of Daena and Aegon IV Targaryen. Keep in mind that this character is not the same as Daemon Targaryen in Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon since these are two entirely different people.

Marvel Snap’s Latest Patch Makes Matchmaking More Balanced for New Players

1 year 9 months ago

It’s been a big week for Marvel Snap, especially with the launch of the game’s first Nexus Event, as well as a huge balance patch that really shook up the meta. Specifically, big changes to some key Pool 1 cards like America Chavez, Strong Guy, and Kazar have resulted in a popular and competitive Pool 1 deck feeling a lot clunkier to play.

As noted in a previous article, I’m not a huge fan of these changes, as Kazoo was pretty much the only viable competitive deck that newer players could build with the cards at their disposal. This problem was exacerbated by the fact that it was possible to get matched up against players who were already deep in Pool 3, which didn’t feel great.

While I’m still not a fan of the idea of nerfing the most viable cards for newer Pool 1 players, the patch does also introduce some balances to the matchmaking system in Marvel Snap. Second Dinner had previously stated in a Q&A session on their official Discord that they were planning on adjusting the matchmaking bands, and while this wasn’t explicitly stated in this week’s July 19 patch notes, it looks like the changes are already live.

According to a Marvel Snap rep, matchmaking optimizations aren’t complete just yet, but right now, players will only get matched with other players in similar Pools. Here’s a rough breakdown of how the matchmaking bands are set up:

Okay, The Last of Us Part I Actually Does Look Awesome on PS5; Will Have Accessibility Options & Permadeath

1 year 9 months ago

Real talk: as quite possibly the biggest The Last of Us fan on Earth –don’t @ me, no one can compete– I was skeptical when Naughty Dog announced a remake of the original game for PS5. This was a 2013 game that released on PS3, and got remastered for the PS4 soon after that. It still holds up really well. Surely it doesn’t need the remake treatment, right?

Well, maybe. Sony’s just released a new features and gameplay trailer for The Last of Us Part I, showing off all the cool new bells and whistles we can expect from the PS5 version, and it does look pretty sweet. You can check out the video down below:

The graphical updates are probably the most impressive thing here. Looking at scene comparisons between the two versions of the game, the lighting looks much more immersive, and the character models themselves also look way more expressive. Naughty Dog claims that the character models will look and feel more like the actual actor performances, helping with the game’s overall immersion.

The Last Of Us Remake Permadeath Mode Revealed Alongside a Host Of Other Improvements

1 year 9 months ago

In the wake of the reveal of The Last of Us Part 1, a full remake of the original 2012 release for PlayStation 3, there were plenty of questions about how much it would actually change. But based on a new video released by Naughty Dog today, the answer is "plenty."

The Last Of Us director Neil Druckmann was among those taking center stage to outline some of the biggest enhancements to the beloved classic, from graphical enhancements to improvements to accessibility. The team also outlined a host of new features, which include:

  • A new Permadeath Mode
  • A Speedrun Mode where players can time their runs
  • Unlockable costumes for Joel and Ellie
  • An enhanced Photo Mode
  • A Model Viewer Mode

That's on top of big changes to AI, graphics, and controls, which aim to enhance The Last Of Us at pretty much every level. For instance, the remake will utilize the DualSense's haptics to add tension as Elllie draws a bowstring, or to enhance the tactile feel of Joel and Ellie petting a giraffe.

Naughty Dog hopes that these changes will make The Last Of Us Remake, as Druckmann puts it, "extremely better" than the original game.

Yu-Gi-Oh Cross Duel Pre-Registrations are Open

1 year 9 months ago

Yu-Gi-Oh Cross Duel

Konami has opened pre-registration for a new Yu-Gi-Oh! mobile game. Yu-Gi-Oh Cross Duel is billed as a brand-new experience involving up to four players at a time. The pre-registration campaign promises rewards for all players based on the number of pre-registrations received. Players can pre-register at this page.

Check out a trailer for the game below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jQPX2sF97A&t

Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel is distinct from other Yu-Gi-Oh! titles in that it focuses on four-player battling. Each player in the match will have some of their card slots linked to those of their opponents on either side and across. As in other iterations of Duel Monsters, players will summon monsters and use spells to battle the other duelists. A four-player cooperative mode will pit all four players against a single extremely tough set of monsters. Finally, a more relaxed single-player mode rearranges the structure into a two-on-two setup. Multiplayer lobbies also support up to 32 players.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel features 3D graphical rendering for all the game's summoned monsters, as well as ways to customize and unlock their skills for deck-building. Single-player modes will team players up with partners from the anime and manga series. Players can win their partners' trust through cooperation, improving their performance and earning rewards.

The Witcher 3 Designer Recalls the 'Mistake' the Team Made With a Key Feature

1 year 9 months ago

CD Projekt Red has admitted it included a few too many points of interest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Skellige map, but has also explained the reason why so many question marks filled the screen in the first place.

Speaking during the developer's 20th anniversary stream, Witcher 4 campaign director Philipp Weber, who was a junior quest designer at the time, said that the various smugglers' caches — underwater chests sprinkled in the dozens throughout the oceans of Skellige — weren't actually introduced as points of interest at all.

Given the extraordinary size of The Witcher 3's map, CD Projekt decided it needed something more than just quests upon quests to fill it.

"I can admit freely I'm one of those people that actually put those question marks in the world," Weber said. "It was already late 2014 so not that long before release [in May 2015] when we basically just filled the world with them.

The Joker Won't Be in Gotham Knights

1 year 9 months ago

Iconic Batman villain The Joker won't be in WB Montreal's upcoming action RPG, Gotham Knights, according to creative director Patrick Redding speaking at a panel today at San Diego Comic Con.

During a fan Q&A, Redding was asked if Joker was in the game, to which he responded no, but added, "I will not confirm or deny whether Harley is," indicating that Joker's clownish compatriot might make an appearance of some sort.

Redding also confirmed that Batman is in fact "really dead" in Gotham Knights (he dies in the first ten minutes, setting up the plot), and remains dead at the end of the game.

He also added that there is "exactly one" Riddler question mark in all of Gotham Knights.

At this same panel, we also got a look at a new trailer showing off Batgirl gameplay, alongside more details about how the four heroes of the game (Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin) have distinct custom dialogue and cinematics depending on which one the player chooses to control at a given time.

New Gotham Knights Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Batgirl

1 year 9 months ago

Today at San Diego Comic Con, WB revealed more details about Gotham Knights, including a new gameplay trailer featuring Batgirl.

The trailer highlights Batgirl's combat, including her wrist blasters and a multi batarang throw. It also gave some insight into her character, with a focus on her desire to protect Gotham City regardless of what name that protection happens to go by. It concluded by announcing that anyone who pre-orders Gotham Knights now will receive a 233 Kustom Batcycle skin.

The SDCC panel included appearances from creative director Patrick Redding, narrative director Anne Lemay, cinematics director Wilson Mui, Cinematics Director, America Young (Batgirl), and Christopher Sean (Nightwing). Comics writer Scott Snyder also made a surprise guest appearance. A chunk of the panel discussion highlighted the ways in which Gotham Knights' dialogue and tone will differ depending on which of the four characters is being played, with Lemay mentioning that WB Montreal did custom dialogue all throughout the game throughout each of their levels and cinematics, and all four choose to fight crime differently.

Magic: The Gathering’s Next Set Will Hide Extremely Valuable Vintage Cards in Some Packs

1 year 9 months ago

Today Wizards of the Coast revealed new details about Magic: The Gathering’s next set, Dominaria United. While the first hints of story were shared, the really surprising news is that some booster packs will contain original cards printed for the 1994 set Legends.

In a video announcing the news, WOTC explained that it found sealed boxes of actual Legends booster packs in a warehouse and wanted to find a way to distribute those cards to players. As such, they decided to open the packs and insert these original printings into Collector boosters for Dominaria United as both a tie-in to Magic’s very first plane and a celebration of its history as the game approaches its 30th birthday.

Many of the cards in Legends are extremely rare and valuable, making the idea of finding one in a brand new booster an exciting proposition. Some of these cards are even part of Magic’s infamous Reserved List, meaning they have never been reprinted in any form (and theoretically never will). That includes The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, a legendary land card on the Reserved List with a current market price of nearly $4000 USD according to TCGplayer, which would be quite a shocking treat to crack open.

Apex Legends' Next Character Just Had Her Diary Posted To Twitter

1 year 9 months ago

Four curious diary entries were uploaded to the official Apex Legends Twitter account this afternoon. Set in 2729--five years prior to the current events of Apex Legends, which take place in the year 2734--the entries appear to be penned by a young girl. Between her self-portraits and love of hunting, it's possible that the author is Vantage, a sniper-focused legend who was leaked back in March.

When the leaks were posted, Newcastle and Vantage were the only characters in them with completed 3D models. Newcastle became the following season's debut legend, leading some to speculate that Vantage may be next to join the legend roster. The current theory is that she could arrive at the Apex Games alongside a new map: Cleo, the partially-destroyed moon of Seer's home planet, Boreas. Her cold-weather gear and long-range abilities would certainly make sense on an icy moon map with an enormous crater in it.

Will Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon Have White Walkers?

1 year 9 months ago

As one of Game of Throne’s primary antagonists, the Night King and his followers were the reason for countless deaths in the franchise. But, now that Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon is finally making its debut, will White Walkers be returning in this new series? Find out what you can expect to see in the franchise’s latest installment and if the creatures will be making an appearance.

Will Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon Have White Walkers? Answered

Based on the Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon trailer and updates, White Walkers will likely not be in the new show. Since the show has many aspects like dragons, civil war, and other elements, there isn’t much room left for the vicious ancient race in the storyline.

We know that the White Walkers are somewhere around Westeros in the show’s timeline because they have been around for thousands of years. They may also be recovering their strength after the Battle for the Dawn, a war that forced them to hide once the Children of the Forest and the Men retaliated against them. In addition, the creatures didn’t appear as much until the Night’s Watch encountered them at the franchise’s beginning.

Rise Of Kingdoms Adds Cleopatra

1 year 9 months ago

Lilith Games is introducing Cleopatra to its mobile game, Rise of Kingdoms. Cleopatra will retain the "Legendary Commander" status in-game and is considered one of the best resource-gathering characters.

Cleopatra has a significant area of effect skill that heal her nearby allies for a percentage of life and increases their armor to a maximum of 15% for two seconds. Both her primary and secondary commanders are good when selected as a gathering. She also has skills and talents that enhance her work, making her a versatile commander for collecting any type of resources on the map.

Although she has a significant area of effect, she isn't meant to be used in PvP or PvE. Cleopatra shines in gathering loot and can only provide support in a "Sunset Canyon" event. Since she doesn't have any fighting skills, when enemies attack her, she takes a lot of damage.

Cleopatra's skills include the following:

A Beloved Christian Bale Thriller Is the Most Googled 2000s Movie in America

1 year 9 months ago

Christian Bale has become one of the most recognizable and beloved actors in the entire industry over the past few decades, as he’s been in a lot of classic roles so far. Whether he’s saving people as a superhero as Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy or trying to kill them as Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s hard not to love this actor.

Interestingly enough, though, it isn’t Batman or any of Bale’s more notable action roles that people are hyped about at the moment. In fact, one of his most googled films at the moment is a Thriller. Yes, that’s right; we are talking about American Psycho.

Originally released in 2000, American Psycho is a horror film about a wealthy New York City investment banking executive named Patrick Bateman, who is played by Christian Bale. It’s one of his more unique roles, as it’s all about a character who hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.

According to a study done by USDirect, American Psycho landed at the top spot for the most googled 2000s movie in America. You can see the chart and some other interesting findings for yourself below.

Ubisoft Cancels Ghost Recon Frontline, Splinter Cell VR, Two Unannounced Games

1 year 9 months ago

Ubisoft has reportedly canceled several in-development titles, including the previously announced Ghost Recon Frontline and Splinter Cell VR.

The publisher announced the cancellations in an investor call, part of the same earnings report that revealed the delay of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Ghost Recon Frontline was a battle royale take on the franchise unveiled last October. It boasted 100+ player matches and was positioned as Ubisoft's next big live-service title. Outside of a planned closed beta that never came to pass, Frontline never had a release window, and the game was heavily criticized by fans who wanted a more traditional Ghost Recon experience. You can watch the reveal trailer below.

Splinter Cell VR was revealed in September 2020, and it was to be a brand-new Splinter Cell title made from the ground up for virtual reality. The game hadn’t made much of a peep since then. Assassin’s Creed VR, which was revealed alongside it, still seems to be happening, though.
