Mortal Kombat 11 Sales Have Topped 11 Million; Franchise Sales Surpass 73 Million

2 years 9 months ago

Developer NetherRealms has today provided an update on new sales milestones for its incredibly popular and long-running beat em’ up video game franchise, Mortal Kombat.

The series’ most recent game, Mortal Kombat 11, has now exceeded 11 million sales worldwide, up from 8 million a year ago. The franchise as a whole has now surpassed 73 million games sold, which doesn’t include a whopping 138 million downloads of the mobile game.

Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm Studios and franchise co-creator, said in a press release:

When Mortal Kombat launched nearly 30 years ago, I never dreamed it would grow into the franchise it is today with more than 73 million games sold. We have some of the most passionate fans in the world and we appreciate the support they have shown us over the years.”

In other recent Mortal Kombat news, Warner Bros. revealed a new trailer of the upcoming animated film Battle of the Realms.

Twinfinite reviewed Mortal Kombat back in 2019 and was hugely impressed, scoring the game 4.5/5 and said of it:

“Small frustrations aside, Mortal Kombat 11 is an extremely fleshed-out fighting game that has a solid backbone both for single-player and online play. It leads the genre now in storytelling in fighting games, cleverly finding a way to unite 17 years of plot.”

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Review – Eastern Sentimentality

2 years 9 months ago

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles on Switch

The Ace Attorney series has become a household name in the visual novel genre at this point; regardless of whether you’ve played them yourself, it’s likely that you’re at least somewhat familiar with its iconic lines and idiosyncrasies. Its characters slam the desk when they have a point to make, and they point a confident finger at their opponent and yell “Objection!” when it’s time for a debate.

Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth have become icons in their own right within the video game world, so it was nothing short of surprising when Capcom announced a few years back that they were making a new Ace Attorney game set in a completely different time period with a totally new cast of characters.

The Great Ace Attorney is a period piece set in 19th century Japan, featuring Phoenix’s own ancestor as the main protagonist. It’s a sharp left turn for the series –one that left me skeptical when it was first announced– but this duology of games manages to retain the essence of Ace Attorney while boldly moving forward into new territory. It’s so confident, self-assured, and most importantly, the story knows where it wants to go, resulting in one of the strongest narrative arcs we’ve ever seen in the series.

Players take control of Ryunosuke Naruhodo, a university student in Japan who decides to pursue studying law after getting caught up in a murder case where he’s nearly found guilty of the crime. After that initial setup, he sets off to Great Britain on a study tour to learn more about their court system with his close friend Kazuma.

Death Stranding Sales Have Exceeded 5 Million Across PlayStation & PC

2 years 9 months ago

Kojima Productions’ debut game, Death Stranding, has performed “quite well” from a commercial perspective, according to head of publishing Jay Boor. Speaking with Gamesindustry.biz, he stated that its sales have now exceeded 5 million across PlayStation and PC platforms.

“With Death Stranding being the first title developed out of Kojima Productions, from a sales perspective, it has performed quite well,” he said. “As of March 2021, Death Stranding has sold through over five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC.”

Death Stranding is acclaimed developer Hideo Kojima’s first game since leaving Konami in 2015 and starting his own studio, Kojima Productions. Sony was heavily involved in the production and publishing of the game, which was originally a PS4 exclusive. Death Stranding has since come to PC with enhanced performance options, which is likely to have boosted its sales over the past 12 months. It is also available on PS5 via backward compatibility.

Twinfinite reviewed Death Stranding in 2019 and was thoroughly impressed with the game, scoring it 4/5 and concluding:

“Death Stranding revels in the mundane and the simple joy of taking a hike while delivering packages from one place to another. It also has something to say about human nature and the resilience of our species, and while the message itself gets muddied in all the other overwrought filler that bogs down the game, it feels earnest, heartfelt, and genuine.”

Microsoft Flight Simulator – Orbx Showcases Add-Ons for Xbox Series X|S With Gorgeous Trailer

2 years 9 months ago

Today prolific add-on developer Orbx revealed a new trailer related to the upcoming release of Microsoft Flight Simulator for Xbox Series X|S.

One of the elements that may surprise the new virtual pilots that will approach the flight simulation hobby in two days (at least if they don’t follow our daily MSFS news) is how prolific the third-party add-on market is. Think of DLC, but created by third-party developers and released by the hundreds every year.

Australia-based Orbx is one of the most prominent among the companies creating such add-ons, counting on several development teams around the world.

Today’s trailer shows some of the add-ons that will be available when the Xbox version launches, the iconic London City Airport (EGLC), city packs for London itself and Singapore (which massively improve the looks of the cities with tons of beautifully modeled landmarks), and the Edgley EA-7 Optica observation aircraft, which is perfect to take in the sights of the simulator.

REPLACED Interview: Devs Talk About the Upcoming Cyberpunk Game That Lit Up E3 2021

2 years 9 months ago

REPLACED made a big splash at E3 2021, and for good reason — the upcoming cinematic platformer oozes cool, from its gorgeous 2.5D pixelated art aesthetic to the promise of a thrilling cyberpunk story set in a grim dystopia. The brilliantly directed trailer depicted a tantalizing and mysterious gaming experience that we here at Twinfinite have been making a song and dance over ever since.

Naturally, the opportunity to speak with developer Sad Cat Studios was one we are hugely excited about. Already this week we’ve published a feature titled ‘REPLACED Aims to Deliver a Cinematic But Thought-Provoking Cyberpunk Experience,’ which is based around some of the most interesting takeaways from my discussion with game director Yura Zhdanovich, and studio co-founder Igor Gritsay. But with so much ground to cover I could hardly include everything, and that, dear reader, is something we considered such a crying shame that we’ve decided to publish the entire Q&A for those who are as interested to hear from the pair as we are.

Senior editor Alex Gibson: The reception to REPLACED’s trailer has been so immensely positive. How did that feel, and has that added pressure to the team, or is it something you’re drawing motivation from?

Game director Yura Zhdanovich: The trailer was deemed by a lot of people very high quality, and so we are now a bit stressed because we need to deliver everything on this kind of level of expectations. We can’t go and do a section of the game that looks subpar in terms of quality compared to what we’ve shown.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Next Update Will Add Optional Level Scaling

2 years 9 months ago

Ubisoft has today announced that its post-launch support of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will continue later this month with a new update that launches on July 27, and among the few noteworthy additions it has confirmed is a new level scaling system.

As you can see above, it’s an optional system that allows players to tailor the difficulty level of the scaling to their preference. That will come as a welcome feature to many who consider level scaling a frustrating feature, rather than something to be welcomed.

Many role-playing games have divided their fanbases with a similar system, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; some consider that enemies constantly scaling to the player’s level removes much of the sense of progress. One might, for example, struggle to defeat an early-game enemy only to return again and similarly struggle 30 hours down the line as a result of scaling.

That being said, those who have hit a ceiling in Valhalla and find they are breezing through enemies far too easily —I certainly felt that was the case when reviewing the game’s latest expansion, Wrath of the Druids–, scaling will certainly add a new challenge to the experience.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Interview: Jorg Neumann Discusses Xbox Version, Future Plans, & Much More

2 years 9 months ago

With the Xbox Series X|S version of Microsoft Flight Simulator coming next week, the flight simulation hobby is going to be open to a brand-new audience.

Yet, Microsoft and Asobo Studio are also working hard to keep improving the simulator for the existing enthusiast audience as well.

To know more about what we can expect in the short, medium, and long term, we had a chat with the head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, Jorg Neumann.

Giuseppe: Let’s start off with something you revealed really recently: Orbis’ Flying Eye Hospital MD-10. Could you talk about how this collaboration came to be? Also, I can’t help but think that you could make it flyable down the line, and likely payware, perhaps with proceeds going to Orbis itself. Is this being considered?

Jorg Neumann: Orbis was seeking a partnership with Microsoft and talking about all sorts of cool stuff. It’s a very cool non-profit and their very first initiative was the Flying Eye Hospital. They told me the story — I did not know about it — and I immediately fell in love because to me our hobby, flight simming, is a close neighbor to real-world aviation.

Any time I see aviation making an impact on the real world and specifically something like this that is great… Flying to socio-economical situations where people need that type of help… I think it’s wonderful. So I genuinely wanted to help.

I looked at the MD-10 and wondered if we could make it. Frankly, our team was totally committed to other things, so we couldn’t make it flyable. It takes quite a long time to make a good flyable version of an aircraft like that.

Black Skylands Is the Sky Pirate Fantasy Life Sim I Never Knew I Needed

2 years 9 months ago

The sky pirate aesthetic was popularized in the video game world when Final Fantasy XII was released back in 2006. It’s an appealing idea that’s been explored in books and other media with steampunk settings, but it’s not one that we often see in video games. Indie developing studio Hungry Couch wants to change that with their new game, Black Skylands, and this ambitious project is looking very promising so far.

Black Skylands takes place in a world where the lands have splintered into tons of different floating islands in the sky. You play as Eva, a young girl who lives on one such island referred to as the Fathership. After a scientific discovery goes awry, the human race finds themselves caught in a deadly conflict with an alien species known as the Swarm. The game then tasks you with sailing through the skies, liberating islands from the Swarm and other opposing factions, and strengthening the Fathership at the same time.

It’s a fairly straightforward premise, and while the story beats can feel a little rushed and contrived in the beginning, this is still an early access game, and its pacing issues can be sorted out further down the line. It’s the gameplay that shines here, and the fact that Black Skylands is able to take cues from several other popular games and genres and execute them well.

Gameplay-wise, it’s a top-down bullet hell shooter. You hit a button to fire a gun, and use the right stick to refine your aim. You can also perform a dodge roll with LB to avoid enemy shots, and combat quickly becomes a bullet hell segment where you’re constantly moving around and dodge rolling to avoid damage while countering with your own shots and melee attacks if you do get close enough. It’s very reminiscent of Enter the Gungeon; even the reloading and gun sound effects feel familiar.

Following the first cinematic reveal of its upcoming game code-named “Project HP,” Nexon released an extended trailer showing the first gameplay.

We get to see PvP action that could feel reminiscent of games like Chivalry or For Honor, with the inclusion of beastmen and magic.

We also get a brief official description.

“HP is an explosive PVP medieval-fantasy multiplayer melee action game. Grab your weapon of choice and storm the battlefield to engage in massive, all-out hack and slash Swordpunk warfare. Get ready to spear, slice and shatter your way to victory.”

You can watch the trailer below,  in smooth 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second.

The game is defined as a “AAA PC Game” directed by Eunseok Yi, who previously worked on Mabinogi, Vindictus, and Durango.

“Project HP” is just a working title, and you can read a translation of the narration in Korean by activating subtitles with the “CC” button.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality Stars Jodie Whittaker and David Tennant as The Doctor

2 years 9 months ago

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality is a new game by developer Maze Theory based on the popular British show Doctor Who. The game will have an original story that expands on the previous game Doctor Who: Edge of Time, and will have two previous Doctors providing voices for their versions of the character.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC on Sept. 30. Unlike Doctor Who: Edge of Time, this one won’t be in VR.

The player will be able to join the Thirteenth Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, to help her save all of time and reality. This is done by entering the “Chaosverse”, a place where a series of time-breaking glitches keep happening and can change things as if time itself became corrupted data.

During your adventure you’ll face classic Doctor Who monsters like the Cybermen, who look like the main baddies, the Daleks, and the fan favorite Weeping Angels. There’s also a guest appearance by the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tenant, who is one of the most popular incarnations of the character.
