Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered PC Update Lets You Link PSN Account For In-game Items

1 year 6 months ago

A new update is now available for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered that allows players to unlock certain in-game items by linking their PlayStation Network and Steam accounts together.

The Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered update on Steam has added the option for players to link their Steam and PSN accounts. Doing so will unlock access to the Resilient Suit, Concussive Blast Gadget, and two Skill Points. Although, players will not receive anything extra if the items are already unlocked and all Skill Points have been earned.

Players can optionally link their two accounts on the official PlayStation website, and can receive news or other offers from PlayStation Studios games on PC and PlayStation.

The Steam update also brings visual and performance improvements for ray-traced reflections, and fixes some cinematics when viewed in 32:9 aspect ratio. Check out the v1.1006.0.0 patch notes for the full list of all the changes.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered launched for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store last August. Sony will be bringing its sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, to PC sometime later this year. No details have been revealed if it too will take advantage of account linking between PSN and Steam, or if the same offer will be coming for Epic Games Store accounts.

Scars Above captures the same spooky alien vibes as Returnal, but it's a much more traditional space adventure

1 year 6 months ago

When the mysterious sci-fi action shooter Scars Above was first unveiled during Geoffcom's Opening Night Live at the end of August, I thought it had big Returnal energy. Based on the reveal trailer, it certainly seemed to be riffing on several of the same themes as Housemarque's challenging PlayStation exclusive - what with its lone female scientist stranded on an alien planet schtick, third-person shooting, and big eerie alien monsters after her etc. - so when I saw it was part of this month's Steam Next Fest demo bonanza, I knew I had to give it a try. And while it certainly captures the same kind of atmosphere as Returnal, I'm sorry to say that's about as far as the comparison goes, as the rest of Scars Above is a much slower, more traditional kind of space action game.

The Rally Point: Ostriv, Workers & Resources, and where town builders ought to go next

1 year 6 months ago

Let's be clear about one thing: whatever else I say today doesn't deny that building games are in a great state right now. Within just the last few years, we've not only had many releases, but an impressive proportion of well-designed, enjoyable games made with obvious care and enthusiasm. Things, in a word, are good. And yet I keep coming back to Ostriv, and Workers & Resources. Neither are out of early access yet. But they've had me contemplating the nature of a settlement, and the complex relationships between people, leaders, and the land itself, where so many of their peers feel like a dispassionate excercise in placing tokens.

Building games are doing well. But they could be doing more.

Modern Warfare 2 gets new launch trailer, three weeks before launch

1 year 6 months ago

A launch trailer for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has popped onto the Internet a full three weeks before the military shooter’s launch date of October 28th. Pre-orderers can play the campaign a week early, technically, but that’s still a good couple of weeks away as well. By the way, could you help me out? I can’t remember the actor who’s playing the shouty general’s name and it’s really bothering me. He’s in the trailer below, watch it and let me know in the comments please.

Need For Speed Unbound officially unveiled, skids onto PC in December

1 year 6 months ago

The next Need For Speed has been revealed at last, and its new graphical direction is what I can only describe as pulling an 'Into The Spiderverse'. Yep, Need For Speed Unbound is looking pretty cel-shaded, with little cartoon streams of dust flying up from the wheels of your speeding vehicle. Substantially pimped-out vehicle, might I add, courtesy of rapper and general lad A$AP Rocky. Take a look at his motor in the trailer below.

The rumoured Modern Warfare 2 "Greatest Hits" map pack won't be complete without these COD classics

1 year 6 months ago

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 isn't even out yet and there's already a rumour circulating that, to celebrate the series' 20th anniversary, the game's going to receive a paid "Greatest Hits" map pack featuring a bunch of the classic maps from across the series. We're talking favourites from Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch, all rolled into one mega-bundle.

Of course, it's only a rumour, which means it could be debunked at any moment. But it did get Hayden and I – the resident codders of the RPS Treehouse – thinking. If this rumour turns out to be true, which maps would we like to see return for Modern Warfare 2?

RimWorld’s Biotech expansion introduces families and genetic engineering

1 year 6 months ago

Sci-fi colony simulator RimWorld is capable of generating some scenarios that could make The Sims 4 blush, and the newly announced Biotech expansion isn’t likely to change that. Y’see, Biotech introduces pregnancy, child-rearing, and families. It isn’t stopping there, because there’s also genetic engineering now. Your character will be able to psychically command semi-living machines too thanks to a special implant, making them your thralls. That’s one word for it, anyway.

Electronic Wireless Show podcast episode 203: the best villainous breakdowns in games special

1 year 6 months ago

We're back with a bang, a villainous laugh, and a dose of coronavirus I've brought back from somewhere in Tenerife. The two week drought is broken with a shower of Electronic Wireless Show podcast rain, were we discuss the best villainous breakdowns we've enjoyed in video games. Matthew is sadly away this week because, while my coronavirus dose is mild, like the tingle of delicious Rio Tropical on your tongue, Matthew's is wild and aggressive, like a super-charged Electricity Cop.

In his absence, Nate and I talk about some proper good villains, and even discuss some sensible things like evil cartoon monsters vs. villains you can sort of sympathise with. Handsome Jack? GLaDOS? LeChuck? Andrew Ryan? That's one hell of an awkward dinner party. Plus stick around for a Cavern Of Lies that proves Warhammer 40k is essentially the same as Tumblr.

Card Cowboy roots and toots even more in an expanded version

1 year 6 months ago

Last month, I enjoyed playing Card Cowboy, a wee wild west adventure which uses cards to tell silly stories. As you cross the land in search of revenge, you build a hand of cards representing resources and events, which you use to resolve situations—often with strange and surprising results. What does happen if you try to lasso a villain with a mezcal worm? That free version was fun, and now the devs have expanded it into a £2 paid version with new cards, conundrums, and voice acting. It too is fun!

Sims 4 October bug laundry list includes werewolf bottom fury and even more incest

1 year 6 months ago

The Sims 4 always gets a few fun bugs to investigate in and around new content coming out (which is all the time), and The Sims 4 Werewolves is no exception. The laundry list of issues that the team are investigating this month has a raft of fun werewolf-centric bugs like humans being able to sniff each other, and a wolf getting mad that he's the bottom (of the pack) even though he's the alpha. The High School Years update from July is also facilitating accidental sibling incest, still, after one method of sibling highschool be-sandwiching was fixed in August. It appears to be an entrenched problem. Those kids must really like House Of The Dragon.

Get the Dell S2721DGFA 27-in 1440p 165Hz gaming monitor for £268

1 year 6 months ago

Over at Eurogamer, I kind of have a thing for LG's Fast IPS screens. This tech combines the best feature of TN panels - their incredibly fast pixel response times - with the traditional advantages of an IPS screen, namely gorgeous colours and wide viewing angles. These screens pop up in LG's 27GL850 and 27GL83A monitors, but are also used in Dell's even better S2721DGFA - and it's this monitor that's on sale today. With a code available here, you can take an extra £30 off a model that's already seen an £80 discount, dropping the price from £380 to £268 - an incredible deal for a monitor of this specification. I used the code $6ZZXZWLF0WV7D, but your code is likely to be different!

So what is this specification? Well, the S2721DGFA exists right at the sweet spot for gaming monitors too, with a 27-inch screen size, 2560x1440 resolution and 165Hz refresh rate. This spec is good because it's not too hard to drive, even with a mid-range gaming PC, but you still get a noticeable increase in clarity and fluidity compared to your standard 1080p 60Hz monitors. And with the Fast IPS screen that I was talking about earlier, you have a monitor that's equally well-suited to fast-paced, competitive shooters as it is slower-paced and more atmospheric games from a wide range of genres.

I have gone on about the Dell S2721DGFA a few times now, so I'll link to those previous posts so you can find out a little bit more about this monitor - and see how much it used to cost too! Suffice it to say, if you have a look at some reviews you'll see that I'm far from the only fan of this model, so I hope this deal is useful to you! Thanks for joining me once again and I'll see you tomorrow for more deals.

Humankind's first major expansion Together We Rule gets November release date

1 year 6 months ago

Together We Rule, the first major expansion for developer Amplitude Studios' historical 4X strategy game Humankind, has been given a 9th November release date - and there's free play weekend for the base game starting today too.

Together We Rule follows the release of two smaller, culture-focused DLC packs for Humankind - one themed around Africa, the other Latin America - and introduces diplomacy and espionage features intended to "help players see the world in a new light and resolve conflicts differently".

These include the new Congress of Humankind - giving players the means to vote and decide on global doctrines and arbitrate international conflicts - as well as the new Embassy Quarter. The latter can be used to sign mutually beneficial agreements with other empires or force them into taking specific actions through Leverage - a special currency generated by the expansion's new Agent units that can be spent to infiltrate, sabotage, and disinform other empires.

Street Fighter 6 Will Let Players Customize Their Challenge Screen

1 year 6 months ago

Street Fighter 6 Challenge Screen Customize

Capcom revealed that players will be able to customize their challenge screens in Street Fighter 6. The feature will allow players to change the portraits and effects that appear before online matches. In a short clip, Capcom showed off a few of the possible combinations for Luke, Ryu, Juri, and others.

The challenge screen appears when players fight in online matches against other players and shows off what character they will be facing. The screen appears to have several elements to customize, including a background with possible animated effects, effect color, and, most importantly, the character portrait. Notably, Capcom stated that players can choose and combine these elements, implying that the customization feature will be optional.

https://twitter.com/StreetFighter/status/1577735493503942657

Capcom's tweet showcasing the feature gives a brief look at a few of the portrait variations. Luke, for example, comes with a default portrait, a key illustration-style portrait, and a retro pixel art-style portrait. Players can then add custom background effects, such as animated flames, stars, or paint splatters. Additionally, as shown in the final collection of challenge screens, players can choose the color of these effects.

You can get a better look at each of the featured Street Fighter 6 customized challenge screens in the screenshots below:

PlatinumGames 'Extremely Sorry' About Closing Babylon's Fall, But Isn't Changing Live Service Plans

1 year 6 months ago

PlatinumGames says that it is sorry about the impending shutdown of Babylon's Fall’s servers, but also notes that it will not impact any future live-service plans.

In an interview with VGC, PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba said, “The only thing we can comment on here in terms of the closure of Babylon’s Fall service itself, is that this unfortunate conclusion might have been something that had triggered some disappointment, perhaps maybe even anger, to our dedicated fans and players.”

He continued, “And any disappointment that we might have caused for our fan base is something we feel extremely sorry about, the fact that we led our dedicated fans to feel that way as a developer. Providing any sentiment other than enjoyment and fun in our creations to players is something that we’re not very happy about at all as a developer.”

Inaba, unfortunately, was unable to go into any specifics about Babylon's Fall’s shutdown, noting that it was up to Square Enix to divulge any further details about it.

However, despite the game's failure, PlatinumGames still wants to invest in live-service games. “There’s a lot that we learned from this experience, and it’s not changed our future plans or outlook moving forward regarding doing live service games at all. Live service games are definitely something we do want to do and put our effort in moving forward,” Inaba explains.

Overwatch 2: Blizzard Apologizes for Shaky Launch, Promises Fixes for Queues and More

1 year 6 months ago

Between server errors, broken account merges, and a strange SMS requirement that locked some players with prepaid phone plans out of the game, Overwatch 2's launch on Tuesday became fairly controversial. Now, Blizzard is apologizing and working to fix some of these issues.

In a post on Blizzard's forum, community manager Jodie apologized for the game's launch and detailed some of the ways the team is working to fix these issues.

"First, we want to apologize to our players. We expected the launch of Overwatch 2 to go smoothly," the post reads. "We hold ourselves to a higher standard and we are working hard to resolve the issues you are experiencing."

Overwatch 2 introduced a requirement for players to connect a phone number, which oddly doesn't allow prepaid phone plans. The post explains that Overwatch players with connected Battle.net accounts won't need to provide a phone number starting on Friday. However, it doesn't apppear that Blizzard has entirely removed this requirement.

Blizzard is also working to improve server stability — after countless players dealt with crashes, lengthy queues and difficulty logging in, it's now working on numerous ways to stabilize these servers, including patching the login server and adding nodes to the player database to lessen the load.

CD Projekt Red Is Going to Put Hundreds of Developers on Cyberpunk: Orion

1 year 6 months ago

CD Projekt Red appears to be ramping up its development capabilities in a big way as it prepares for Cyberpunk 2077's sequel, codenamed Orion, as it looks to create a new studio and put hundreds of staff on the project.

Speaking during an investors' call after announcing Orion alongside several Witcher games, CD Projekt Red CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said he expects 350 to 500 developers will be necessary to create the game.

It's also creating a brand new, primarily Boston-based studio for Orion, which will combine with its current Vancouver office and be known as CD Projekt Red North America.

Though talent from its Polish studios will also be assisting with the game (including Cyberpunk 2077's lead quest designer Paweł Sasko, who is moving to Boston for it), the Vancouver studio only had around 12 team members when it was acquired by CD Projekt Red last year. It therefore appears the company needs to hire a few hundred new staff to hit the 350 to 500 quota, and it's already advertising dozens of positions on its website.

"The North American studio will consist of teams working from Boston and the team working from Vancouver," Nielubowicz said, and "the project will also be supported by developers from Poland."

Disco Elysium: Ex-Developer Doesn't Think ZA/UM Will Make a Sequel

1 year 6 months ago

Martin Luiga, the ex-developer of Disco Elysium that brought attention to key figures being 'involuntarily' forced out of the studio, says he thinks it's unlikely that ZA/UM Studio will make a sequel to the modern classic RPG.

Speaking to GamePressure, Luiga was somewhat cagey about the circumstances of the departures of Robert Kurvitz, Helen Hindpere and Aleksander Rostov, but said he doen't believe the remaining developers at the studio will make a Disco Elysium 2:

"I think ZA/UM Studio in its current form will not be developing the sequel and I am unsure of the number of people that left in the company who also worked on the original Disco."

ZA/UM's own response to the news did mention a new project in development, but pointedly did not make clear whether it was a Disco Elysium follow-up. We've contacted ZA/UM for comment. [Update: ZA/UM declined to comment on this story.]

The fallout from Luiga's original message - which announced the dissolution of the ZA/UM cultural association, an arts collective that spawned the studio and Disco Elysium - has seen some fans turn on the developers who remain at the studio, something he doesn't support:

"I do think though that it doesn't make sense to be offensive against the current workers of the company. It is unlikely to change their positions. The managers have a way of making people trust them. Robert (Kurvitz) and others had complete trust in them until it was too late. It pays to remain polite, even if it's hard – and I know that I have not been a very striking example at times."

Brazilian Regulator Approves Microsoft's Activision-Blizzard Acquisition

1 year 6 months ago

Brazil’s competition watchdog, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) has approved the Microsoft and Activision Blizzard merger without restriction, citing PlayStation’s already dominant position within the video game industry and Nintendo’s ability to compete without relying on franchises such as Call of Duty.

In a long public filing, CADE touched on PlayStation’s portfolio of exclusives, saying, “Investment in exclusive content is, and always has been, very important for the competitive dynamics in the console segment. Exclusive content was, most likely, one of the main factors responsible for positioning the PlayStation as a leader in the world console market for more than two decades, a leadership that continues to this day.”

CADE also mentions that Nintendo employs a similar strategy with exclusive content while noting that Microsoft doesn’t seem to sell as many consoles as PlayStation and Nintendo either. Of course, one of the biggest concerns about Microsoft’s acquisition is the multiplatform status of Call of Duty.

The Invincible Hands-On Preview: For The Love of Sci-Fi

1 year 6 months ago

The greatest compliment I can give the developers of The Invincible is that this feels like walking into the worlds imagined by mid-century sci-fi authors. Based on the novel The Invincible by Stanislaw Lem, I spent an hour with a development build of Starward Industries' upcoming sci-fi adventure and fell into a vibrant wonderland rife with adventure, danger, and discovery.

I took control of Yasna, a crewmember from the ship Invincible trying to find out what happened to some prior explorers on a remote, desolate planet. I wandered through the branches of a mountain pass, finding dead, lost crewmates in narrow ravines and twisting passages. Her slow, plodding space-suited bootsteps and labored breathing as she climbed rocks and dealt with an increasingly bad headache added a sense of depth and feeling to the world around her.

She frequently talks with her navigator, Novik, a crewmember on the orbiting Invincible that lets her know about what's going on and helps make decisions about their course. The steady conversation between the two provides backdrop to the desolate canyon environments, and branching dialogue choices offer up some customization in how Yasna reacts to the events around her. There's also a clear conflict between their personalities, adding a bit of dramatic fuel to the chatter.

Moonbreaker Removes Controversial Feature a Week After Early Access Launch

1 year 6 months ago

The developers behind Moonbreaker have released an update that removes the Cargo Run Contracts system from the game, giving players unlimited access to the PvE mode.

The update was announced in a post on Moonbreaker's Steam page, where the team extended their gratitude to the community for their support during the game's Early Access launch. They assured players that they were making adjustments to address some of the initial concerns that had been raised, specifically the use of Contracts to play Cargo Run.

"While our intent was always for players to be able to earn enough Blanks during Cargo Run to continually unlock additional Contracts to play, we understand the community's collective frustration that this mode felt gated and the desire to have any possible limitation removed," the post read before announcing an update that would remove the controversial feature.

The team explained that players who purchased Cargo Run Contracts using Pulsars or Blanks before this change will be refunded as soon as possible and will receive the full amount of the relevant in-game currency used to redeem any Contracts, while players that had Cargo Run Contracts in their inventory will receive 10 Blanks per Contract as part of the update.

Exclusive: Need for Speed Unbound Has Finally Been Revealed, And It Looks Very Different

1 year 6 months ago

A new Need for Speed will be arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC this December, featuring the return of Criterion as the lead developer for the first time in close to a decade.

Titled Need for Speed Unbound, Criterion's long-awaited return to the racing scene will utilize new-gen consoles and the Frostbite Engine to deliver 4K 60fps visuals in a free-roaming open world called Lakeshore. The physics will run at a high frame-rate as well, offering "more control and nuance to...the physical movement of the cars," creative director Kieran Crimmins says.

A trailer released Thursday offered fans their first look at the newly-revamped art style, which is meant to reflect the franchise's return to its street racing roots as well as the input of rapper A$AP Rocky, who will have his own mode in the new entry. Its emphasis on art and graffiti will extend to the gameplay, with Burst Nitrous boosts rewarded for stylish driving.

"Need for Speed is about trendsetting. Need for Speed is about breaking the mold. Need for Speed is about rebellion. It's at the heart of that street racing fantasy, so we should be exploring new art styles and new visions and new ways the game can look, so that we can not only stand out from everything else, but also deliver innovation where we should be setting trends," Crimmins says.

The world's largest collection of Pokémon cards, figures, games, and more is expected to sell in the UK later this month for up to £300,000 ($338,000).

As reported by the BBC, the collection will be sold as a single lot at Hansons Auctioneers in Teddington, with a guide price of between £250,000 and £300,000, an expectation backed by the auction house.

The collection of Pokémon merchandise - which has been verified by Guinness World Records as the biggest - was amassed over 25 years and includes 20,000 individual items.

The seller, who wished to remain anonymous, told Hansons Auctioneers that "from childhood, every penny of pocket money and savings went on Pokémon and when it came to Christmas and birthdays, Pokémon presents dominated.

"It’s been brilliant to be recognised by Guinness World Records but, more than that, my hobby has helped me make new friends. I am a quiet soul, a bit of an introvert. Pokémon has helped me gain confidence."

Highlights of the collection include sealed packs of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Base, Team Rocket, and Jungle sets, alongside a shadowless Base Set Blastoise, and the Pichu and Squirtle Pokédolls, which are among the first plushies released in Japan.
